All I can say is my expectations were low, but holy fuck. It reads like the rot is so endemic that it was impossible to cover up and treat by offering a single sacrificial lamb.

We've never had an elected government this close to actually being charged for money laundering before, in our entire history as a country. Individual, unelected officials, sure, but involving cabinet and sitting MLAs is new territory here.

As an Albertan I am disgusted by this whole situation, and the fact a large part of the electorate just doesn’t seem to care judging by the fact the UCP are pretty much tied in the poles with the NDP.

This goes way beyond Allison Redford screw ups.

If they hadn’t changed the law to allow bribes then they’d already be in prison, but thankfully for them one of Smiths first acts as premier was to change the laws to allow MLAs to receive gifts without having to report them, changes to the freedom of information act so Albertans had less ability to know how the government was spending tax money and to insulate UCP appointments from being held accountable for their professional code of conduct violations.

Corruption was a clear priority from the onset and many political scientists tried to blow the whistle but conservative voters simply do not care about corruption in Alberta, it’s maddening how bad it’s gotten and how little she’d been called out for it in right wing media. Right wing podcasters in fact, have been involved with harassing AHS whistleblowers instead….

This is 100% a kleptocracy.
