Announcement Important dates and resources for CUNY students

Hey everyone, as the fall semester is right around the corner I figured that I should post these links for new and current students.

The academic calendar has been posted for Fall through Spring 25-26. CUNY follows the same academic calendar meaning your days off should all be the same. You will have random days where Tuesdays follow a Monday schedule, Fridays will follow a Monday schedule, etc. Try your best to plan ahead.

https://www.cuny.edu/academics/academic-calendars/

CUNY also has resource centers to help you succeed. CUNY offers food pantries, housing assistance, emergency funds, mental health resources and other resources. Please use these resources if you need them. CUNY can help but you as students need to be proactive in seeking these resources.

If you require accommodations, ask for them via your school's Office of Student Disability Services. Reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments may include, but are not limited to, providing the student with assistive technology or other auxiliary aides, extra time for tests or papers, access to an elevator where available, a note taker during lectures, or permission to bring a personal aide to assist the student during class.

CUNY Student Seeking Housing Assistance and Support — Any Advice Appreciated

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m 21 and currently on medical leave from Queens College after several months of mental health treatment out of state. I’m planning to return in Spring 2027, but due to serious family circumstances, I’m trying to find safe, affordable housing so I can continue my education independently.
I’ve already contacted Queens College about emergency assistance, but was told I cannot apply for financial support until the semester begins, and the office I contacted doesn’t assist with housing. It’s frustrating because I’m trying to prevent a housing crisis before it happens.
Does anyone know of CUNY housing resources, emergency assistance programs, or organizations that help students in difficult family situations? I’d also love to connect with other CUNY students, as I’ve struggled to make friends and build a sense of community. I’m not asking for donations, just advice or guidance. Thank you!

Question Transferring from a community

• Upvotes

Hello! This is intended to be my last semester at BMCC ( assuming everything goes to plan ), so I applied to transfer out. I picked CUNY SPS, Baruch, CCNY, and Queens college. Queens college was kind of my throwaway since I didn’t see myself going to any of the others. The only thing is now, I don’t know which one to transfer to. I got accepted into all of them, and the deadline is somewhere in December to accept I believe. I am a psychology major(AA), and at BMCC I was a ASAP student. I wanted to know what would be the best choice for me. Baruch & CCNY are both similar commutes away from me, but I also have an online degree. I’d like to hear opinions about internship opportunities, the psychology program, and other things that weighed your decision. If you were in my shoes which would you apply to?

College assistant job

So I did an interview for the college assistant role at my college like almost two weeks ago now. I haven’t heard back from them. During the interview she told me a lot about the job and mentioned a second interview. But haven’t heard anything yet. Has anyone here worked as a college assistant before? What was the hiring process like? Did you do two interviews?

Has anyone received their CUNY Spring 2027 admission decision yet?

Hey everyone! I applied to CUNY for Spring 2027 at Queens College, York College, LaGuardia, and Queensborough.
I submitted my high school transcript in September, but CUNYfirst still shows it as “Required” and “Work in Progress.”
Has anyone already received an acceptance for Spring 2027? If so, which college and when did you apply?
Also, has anyone experienced a delay with their transcript status updating?

BMCC Questions regarding NY State Reconnect

I've reached out to the financial aid dept as well as BMCC's Panther Station regarding this, but no one seems to give me a clear answer.

Is the Reconnect program a part of FAFSA? I am not eligible for FAFSA yet due to my immigration status not being sufficient (waiting on my EAD card). Does that mean I am not eligible for Reconnect either?

Even if I am get my EAD card, I still have a Title IV Packaging hold for all my semesters for the last few years anyway. I had to keep dropping my classes before the semester started, due to several reasons. I am aware that I need to file an SAP appeal & get it approved to receive financial aid, but I am confused about that part as well. Do I need to file an appeal for ALL the semesters I had a Title IV hold for? Or just the most recent past/upcoming semester?

Research or internship undergrad Brooklyn college CompSci

Hi! I’m a third-year computer science student at Brooklyn College. I’m trying to find out whether the college has any programs that help undergrads get involved in CS research as assistants or find internships.

Are there specific departments, faculty, campus programs, or job boards I should check? I’m hoping not to die homeless after graduation, since it feels like every job wants you to have at least three internships already 😭 Any advice on where to start or how to apply would be appreciated!

Medgar I told the professor I wasn’t learning anything from her class, she replied “it’s not my teaching your misunderstanding, it’s your living situation that’s keeping you from focusing”

Hey! I go to MEC and in my second semester first year. and I have an online class. The professor is the type to have you read a textbook, she barley talks about what we read In the textbook then she goes into the next topic. It’s pretty much a class where the students have to teach themselves.

When I first signed up for the class the advisor assured me that the class wouldn’t be an independent class (we’ll have discussions in class it’ll be less textbook reading and we’ll review anything we talk about) so I took it. The problem is I don’t learn by reading. I’m more hands on and involved learner. I learn and retain information faster by having a 10 minute discussion than I do reading 15 pages from a textbook. Them on top of that we have to do 2 discussion post and 1 essay for every chapter by Friday (the class is Tuesday)

3 weeks into school I let my teacher know that due to domestic violence I was homeless. ( at this point I’ve been homeless for a year and was still able to get all A’s and B’s in my classes for my first and current semester ) At 4 weeks of school I told her I’m not learning anything from her class because I don’t learn by reading a textbook. She said and I quote “it’s not my teaching your not understanding, it’s your living situation and at home stress that’s keeping you from learning”.

Now I was so stunned the girl couldn’t speak. When I went to my classmates and told them what happened they all said they must be having personal problems too because they also wasn’t learning anything from this class.

It’s at a point where I’m considering going to the head of the program due to her statement because if a student goes to you and tells you their struggling , you should ask why and try to help, not pin it on the student and pretty much tell them it’s out their hands.

Wanted to know if I’m crazy and shouldn’t do that or if I’m justified and should.

UPDATE

I see people thinking I’m pretty much stupid for saying what i said in the post and i want to make something completely clear

  1. not once did i say i didnt expect to read in college. I said that the reading pages after pages isn’t how i learn. So to those calling me an oxymoron and all different type of things it’s almost as if you don’t take into consideration how other people learn. And it’s really rude.

I knew reading comes with college. But not every class is heavy in reading or at least the classes/ professors I have don’t enforce it crazy. I’m taking 5 classes and out of all of them the class im talking about above is the only class the professors tells us to read from a text book.

and I didn’t think by me going to the professor class I was telling her she’s a bad teacher. In another class the professor encouraged us to go to the professors and tell them if we’re having problems learning in their class. And with everyone saying I pretty much spit in the professors face shit I can see I was wrong. I didn’t look at it that way.

  1. the whole point of the post was because she brought my housing situation into it when my housing has nothing to do with it. I read in my other classes and we also have discussions and that’s how I engage. I don’t understand how a post about a professor using my situation against me has anything to do with wanting the professor to spoon feed me.

Recommendation letters

I have completed and submitted all of my application to Brooklyn college except for I’m still waiting on my letter of recommendations to be submitted. The deadline for the application is this Sunday, Nov 1st. What happens if they don’t submit my letter of recommendations before the deadline? Will that affect my chances of being accepted even though the rest of my application was submitted on time? One of my recommendations is coming from my bachelor program advisor and he’s so slow to respond I’m worried he won’t submit on time.

Cuny SPS: do I really need to have 8 hours per class?

Hey! Got in to cuny sps through early admission. I finish my associates at the end of this semester. It says you need 8 hours a week to dedicate to each class. I did my AS online at kbcc but some were synchronous and some were asynchronous, I have no idea how many hours I spent a week at any class but it definitely wasn't 8.

Currently i have 4 classes for 12 credits all asynchronous. I work full time and have 2 kids. Should I drop one or if I was able to handle it kbcc I should be fine here, right? Is the work that much harder?

Pre-req not met for one of my classes needed for graduation

Hi! I’m a senior and for one of my last three classes I don’t meet the pre-req. Which was a C or higher on the pre-req class. I have a meeting with an academic advisor, but I truly don’t know how it could go. Also to preface, I’m a transfer student from another CUNY which is where I got the C-. I’m kinda nervous since I’m so close to the finish line. Does anyone know if I could possibly take a e-permit to satisfy the class even with not meeting the pre-req or anything that could be done?

College Now Spring 2027 Precalculus offerings which opened up?

Im a 11th grader right now in NYC Queens and i really would like to take Precalculus at a college for a semester in order to take Calc at my school and in senior year.

I believe i can handle it due to my high math proficency (passed algebra/trig/geometry with 95%+ averages and Regents with 80+ and regular exams with 90s), was recommended by my guidence counselor, algebra, trig, geometry, and even the calc, and calc honors teacher to take this path but I have severe scheduling conflicts which makes this goal harder.

I can only attend in these time frames daily:

Saterday: Past 3 PM (due to being in NYU STEP)

Sunday: No time limit since I'm fully free that day

Monday: Past 2PM (due to school and probally transportation)

Tuesday: Past 5:30PM (due to having a Medicine and Drug college course during the Spring semester)

Wednesday: Past 3PM (due to having drone club)

Thursday: Past 5:30 (due to the same Medicine and Drug college course for the lab portion)

Friday: Past 2PM (due to school and probally transportation)

I know these scheduling conflicts are severe but I really would not like to drop them and i kinda did drop some stuff beforehand like a volunteering opportunity at a local library since i thought it was kinda lame (jk but it takes up too much time). I really need to take at least a Precalc course in Spring since I would rlly love to take Calc 1 in the summer. Ive looked in most CUNY schools but they either dont have applications open, their applications are too outdated, the precalc course takes place in a time i cant, or they dont even offer it at all.
