What kinds of things have you heard about the graduate school psychology programs here?

• Upvotes

Like the one for marriage and family therapy, the one for school counseling, the one for school psychology, and the one for special education.

I was able to meet with a counselor earlier today and got a lot of valuable information!

I learned that apparently, contrary to what most people here said you don’t have to attend orientation to sign up for classes as a new or transfer student (but you do have to stick to the date on your canvas.)

I also learned that you have to take the BSW electives within certain categories which was helpful (have tk complete upper division GE courses in arts and humanities for example.) I was told that counseling therapy graduate programs are alternatives to the MSW (but as the counselor pointed out even though it wouldn’t hurt to have the information it is probably too early for me to start planning/mapping that out.)

I also learned that you have to take at least 1 in person SW class per semester which means I indeed very likely will not be able to work full time since it seems none of the ones I saw when I checked the selection out were at nighttime. I am actually really excited to continue my educational journey, whether I do well at east bay or not.

Belly Button Fetishizer strikes again

I was in the library today doing some homework when a guy came up to me and asked if he could sit next to me. I said sure and he sat down. He stated asking me a whole bunch of questions like where are you from, what year are you, what major, do you commute, etc. The conversation was endless and I started to pack my things because I was trying to study and he wouldn’t stop talking to me. Once I got up, he said “I like your nose piercing, did it hurt when you got it?” I said no and then he said “do you think it would hurt more than a belly button piercing?” I said probably not. He asked “do you have a belly button piercing?” I said yes. He asked me if it hurt more than my nose piercing and I just said no and I had to get to class (I didn’t). He said his name was Tyler and he is a transfer student 3rd year from Fremont. I was on reddit and came across someone else’s experience that was almost the exact same as mine-down to even eating grapes in the library lol. Watch out for this guy and if he starts asking about your piercings just walk away.

Does anyone else feel discouraged when trying to reach financial aid??

I am in an online program and live close to 3hrs away from campus so going in person isn’t an easy option at all, and whenever I try to get in contact with the office they either don’t respond at all or have me waiting for literal hours on the phone.

I honestly wish I had never attended this university due to such little support for online students, I love my professors but the rest of the school is just so frustrating and annoying.

EDIT:

Someone suggested submitting a refund request form, so I did that and literally within 5 minutes they completed their portion and my account is now showing my MCS as a refund instead of payment.

So I strongly suggest going through this to get your refund changed or processed with anything regarding financial aid, that way you aren’t waiting around for someone to pick up for hours on end.

(If the link doesn’t work just go onto the east bay website and search refund and its the second link, scroll all the way to the bottom for the form link)

What the heck is going on with the refunds this semester?

  1. The MCS amount on CSAC and MYCSUEB doesn’t match (there have been no changes on my end.)

  2. The MCS amount on MYCSUEB shows $1,974 but now my refund went down to $1,676.75. I quickly realized that they were subtracting the $297.25 for the total Course Material which I already paid for 9/17/26.

Am I missing something here?

Please see attached screenshot.

How quickly do social work classes and electives typically fill up? And if you are a 1st semester transfer student is taking 18 units ill advised?

I’m wondering if I should just take care of it at midnight, or wake up earlier than normal in the morning to get signed up for everything before I go to work.

What are my chances for nursing program?

Hey everyone! I’ve been feeling pretty anxious lately about applying to the nursing program at CSUEB. I’m currently a student here, and my GPA is 3.64. Do you guys think that’s competitive enough to get accepted into the program?

Who do I contact if I just want to meet with a career counselor?

I’ll be finishing off with associates degrees in child development, early childhood education, and social and behavioral sciences after this semester. A friend of mine who goes here actually pointed out to me that since I’m not 100% sure about sticking with the BSW (though I could always just stick with it and earn a masters degree in something else) it might be wise to try meeting with a career counselor, which is something that I have never tried to do throughout my college journey.

What exactly does happen if you change majors?

I’ll be starting in spring 2027 under the BSW, but I know that I might switch the major. I will have associates degrees in social and behavioral sciences, child development and early childhood education when I start here. It looks like I won’t be able to work full time if I keep the BSW next semester (though I’m already a substitute behavior technician so I guess that’ll work) but I might end up changing the major, just not sure what I would change it to. Since it doesn’t look like all of the classes for the BSW will be available next semester, I am considering taking a few classes (other than the required electives, I know we can officially sign up tomorrow and I hope classes I need to take aren’t filled by the time I get up tomorrow morning. I could also try waking up even earlier in the morning to sign up) that aren’t related to my major without going over the # of units.

I’ve also considered that if I do simply stay on the BSW path and earn a BSW, I can always earn a masters degree in something else. I know you won’t make much money with a BSW on it’s own and I am already from a very poor family, so I am starting to realize now that it is actually time to well start at a university that I need to be smart about financial decisions moving forward, since masters degree programs can be so costly.

I am a student who is not interested in mathematics, but wants to move out of a low income bracket. I’ll start a BSW next semester but might change majors. I’m open to getting a masters degree. What should I be mindful of?

I am actually in the process right now of trying to figure out what classes I will be taking for the bachelor of social work major when I start at a CSU in January. I know that even with a masters in social work and becoming an LCSW, I am not likely to make a significant amount of money.

I do work. I am a substitute behavior technician (it is looking like I will probably still not be able to work full time this upcoming semester, so depending on what the times for fall 2027 classes end up being I may be able to work full time next fall, and likely this upcoming summer as well.) I have actually received a positive report so far from every school I have subbed at, today I was at a middle school (I have been with 4th grade, 5th grade, and recently a preschooler, the staff for the TK student actually wanted me to come back the next day to work with her again.) I have been a behavior technician for what is now a little over 2 years (I started in October 2024.) I am human, so I have had clients and cases that didn’t work for me before, particularly early on. I was with an adult client for a year. The TK student was the only eloper, I actually really enjoyed working with her though. The only student I can think of who didn’t technically have autism (had ADHD) was a 4th grader I worked with who had also seemed to enjoy his time with me at the end.

Subbing for sixth grade made me think about how insightful middle schoolers can actually be, and about how long ago it was for me.

The client I had today (I’m a behavior technician who is considering becoming a therapist or teacher later on) actually quizzed me on geography and I realized the only flag I actually recognize, even though I graduated from high school and am almost done with community college, is the American flag. I thought the work otherwise was very straightforward and easy to understand, but I’m an adult so I of course already learned it (like writing claim, evidence, reasoning, etc.)

I have always said based upon what I remember of middle school that I wouldn’t want to teach middle school because of how toxic and mean I remember the kids seeming (everyone was actually better in elementary and high school) but the kids today were actually very nice. They seemed like more mature elementary schoolers, and I was impressed/intrigued by how insightful their comments were when they were talking about whether or not it would be appropriate for teachers to require that students wear a uniform for their dress code. 11-12 seems to be the age range where kids start thinking more deeply.

I also liked how peaceful the classrooms seemed. Things at this school didn’t seem chaotic or hectic at all and it made me reflect a bit on my own middle school experience. The teachers at the school who my client had today were actually male, both had a sense of humor and you could tell they cared about their students. I’d say it was a positive experience overall even though I don’t think my client initially liked me very much lol.

I have a 3.87 in community college. I will be finishing off community college with associates degrees in social and behavioral sciences, child development, and early childhood education.

I worked at a preschool for a year and four months before I started working as a behavior technician. I know that I don’t want to teach preschool.

I would like to eventually move into a house as someone who grew up in an apartment complex (my parents have never been able to move into a house) though I know that with how high the cost of living is these days, this will be difficult either way unless I get married (and I am not a pretty woman, so I have no reason to believe or assume that I will marry.)

I am technically going in for the BSW, but am considering going for a masters in special education or something else entirely. Would it be sensible to sign up for classes in subjects other than social work?

I’m actually considering doing this, especially since the advising department has really not gotten back to me. I see there are a few social work classes that will be available this upcoming semester. I’m considering signing up for a special ed, teacher education, and SLP class just because I might end up changing the major in fall 2027 anyway. Not sure how many units you have to take each semester, but I am a substitute behavior technician and will likely remain one, it’s just that being a sub only runs Monday-Friday and I’ll have to figure that out. Don’t know how many units you have to take per semester.
I know I also need elective courses but I have no idea how to get ahold of a bay advisor.

Is it okay to take classes for the BSW out of order?

I am looking at this as a framework of what to sign up for:

https://catalog.csueastbay.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=44&poid=20682&returnto=42188

I might switch the major later on anyway, but I will start here in January and it seems that other than the few social work courses available without having taken 300 or 301 I can sign up for electives and get those out of the way. Though I might switch the major in fall 27 either way, and it is looking like 300 and 301 won’t be available this semester from what I’m saying.

Has Console Gaming Gotten Too Expensive? CSU Student Survey (3–5 Minutes)

Hey everyone! I'm a student journalist at CSU East Bay working on an article for The Pioneer about whether console gaming has gotten too expensive, especially for college students.

Between tuition, textbooks, and everything else we're paying for, I'm curious how gaming fits into everyone's budget.

I've put together a quick, anonymous survey that takes about 3–5 minutes. You don't have to be a gamer to participate!

I'd really appreciate your input!

Thinking of transferring to CSUEB

Hi! I’m currently at SJSU and considering transferring to CSUEB because it’s closer to me and would be a lot more convenient and I feel like the environment is overall less overwhelming.

I’m planning to pursue speech-language pathology, and I’m trying to decide if transferring would be the right move for me. I’d also love to have more time for volunteering, extracurriculars, and gaining experience outside of school.

For current CSUEB students, how has your experience been? Do you feel like you have good opportunities to get involved and gain experience related to your major? I’d love to hear your honest opinions about the school, especially anything SLP related!
