Northwestern and Wake ranked. Good job AP
LSU should be out
86
u/Gophurkey 16d ago
This means at this point, Purdue's losses are to the 2nd, 12th, and 21st ranked teams.
I had been saying since they happened that Wake and UCLA weren't bad losses at all, but showed we can hang with teams who are clearly in the dcent-to-very good tier. And since Indiana State and ND are in different levels of competition from us (on opposite sides) neither of those games really matter.

We were so close to a Northwestern-IU big ten championship game! Back when 9-Windiana was still a novelty
8
u/WelshNational 16d ago
On paper should be a rout but there are a lot of factors that make it freaky.
Coach Fitz wanting to spite NU, Chiles homecoming, road game in a tough environment
NU also didn’t look impenetrable against Ball State by any means, the defense has to step up again

They could seriously go undefeated in conference play and make the playoffs.
Oregon State has an easier path to the playoffs than Oregon.

If we show up the rest of the year even like we did against Illinois last week, we'll finish the season 6-6. If we show up like last night? We could be 8-4. Still think we drop either Iowa or IU, but at least now neither seems guaranteed.
9
u/LiquidLight_ 16d ago
I think we drop IU for sure. It won't be a bloodbath, but they're (unfortunately) good under Cignetti. Nebraska proved they're mortal, if you have a rock solid defense, which Purdue most certainly doesn't (thanks Kane). I don't think rivaly voodoo will make up the difference.
Iowa's definitely winnable, again it mostly comes down to how well the defense shows up. I think the offense can put up a couple TDs, but if it turns into a shootout, it's Iowa's game.
7
u/SpursUpSoundsGudToMe 16d ago
I kind of expected Purdue to make some kind of jump, but it was hard to tell early on because Wake and UCLA turned out to be good. Now you can see it!
I’m seeing a for sure win vs Maryland, and then somewhat toss-ups with UDub, Penn State, and Wisconsin and tougher, but winnable game vs Iowa… 2 out of that group of 4 for a bowl seems reasonable!
6
u/Drak_is_Right 16d ago
Not being complete ass is helping Wake Forest and UCLA also. Their resumes are looking decent.

u/DirtyBirdDawg 16d ago
I think Auburn has it worse. They're the only team guaranteed to have both Bama and Georgia on the schedule every year, and they play LSU a ton, too.
Tennessee did as well, but they are "saved" by the elimination of divisions.
→ More replies (2)4
u/dankenascend 16d ago
That's kind of the nature of a league schedule that right now only has 1 really bad team and a few mid teams . Georgia has a weaker league schedule because they don't play Georgia. South Carolina has a tougher league schedule because they don't play South Carolina.
4
u/bryansmall41 16d ago
To be fair to voters south Carolina is terrible and should be won that game. They re sounded nicely. Also to be fair to voters losing to South Carolina is so punishing it moved Florida all the way out even though ole miss gets to stay because they have a home win against a bad LSU team

u/TBallinsPremPass 16d ago
Why is LSU ranked. Can somebody give me a good argument.
524
u/TheWallsHaveNostrils 16d ago edited 16d ago
Can't believe I'm defending the Ducks but there is no justification for ranking LSU while not ranking Oregon.
LSU hasn't beaten a ranked team. Their best win is either Clemson or A&M, both of whom are mid at best.
And while both teams they've lost to are good, Kentucky is still unranked.ignore this point, I missed that Kentucky got ranked. Which they should be, tbh.Oregon has two ranked wins in USC and Boise State. Both their losses are ranked in OK State and UCLA. And one of their losses has the excuse of a backup quarterback playing.
There is no rational justification beyond media hype and name brand to have LSU over Oregon.
272
u/Vocen 16d ago
I'll give you some cover for "defending" us: you're right, but to be clear the moral of the story is not that we should be ranked, but that LSU has no business being ranked either.

Same logic goes for Oklahoma. We lost to #1 Georgia and at Michigan, but beat #7 Texas. The Michigan loss isn't aging well but it's at Michigan in week 2.
We don't deserve to be ranked, but if we don't neither does LSU

Poll inertia is too silly. LSU is the only team on here who has lost two games
92
u/Dokkan_Lifter 16d ago
Meanwhile, JMU is undefeated after finishing 19 last season and has only gained 20 votes since week 0. Poll inertia for some, nothing for others.
14
u/runliftcount 16d ago
ND has played a mediocre Wisconsin, a lame MSU, a baffling Purdue and UNC, as well as shitty Rice and Stanford. Tell me without poll inertia they deserve to be #2 with a straight face and I'll smack you with a shillelagh. Ready to see BYU expose them next week.

Arizona being "also receiving votes" at 5-1 with an 11-point road loss against #8 and a blowout win over a 4-1 P4 team while SMU is #24 at 4-1 with a 10-point loss to a 3-3 team and their best win being by 3 points over another 3-3 team is the epitome of "poll inertia". SMU's in because they were a preseason ranked team and the 3-3 team they lost to was ranked at the time; Arizona isn't because they weren't ranked in the preseason, lost too early, and their quality win was over a team so lightly regarded that they didn't even start receiving votes until they were 4-0, just before losing to Arizona.

u/glassclouds1894 16d ago
Wake and NW finally cracking and UK in the top 15 is finally a correct set of choices by the AP.

I feel like LSU should probably be unranked at this point. Their 2 losses are to good teams, but I think there are at least a few teams that have a better resume behind them
5
u/DeathToHeretics 16d ago
LSU 100% should be unranked. LSU's wins are over a bad Clemson, Louisiana Tech, a bad Texas A&M, and McNeese. LSU has close losses to Kentucky & Ole Miss. Even if you say the losses aren't that bad, their wins don't give nearly enough reason to be ranked. A&M, their best win so far, probably won't even end the season ranked with their gauntlet of a schedule left.
