This month's drama hosted discussions
Here are Cdrama discussions for this month (which includes older, not currently airing dramas.)
Big, big thanks to the hardworking hosts:
(To go to the drama discussions, click on the drama name.) Hosts, if I've not listed your drama or your name, DM u/lotus_swimmer or leave a comment below.
If you're new to drama hosting, please DM u/alcibiad . She'll help get you started.
Some ground rules for hosts
Use the "Drama Host" flair for your posts.
Have commented and participated in the sub before and not be a brand new account.
Have watched the drama before writing the particular episodes' discussions.
Should try to engage in the comments section (don't have to reply to every comment, mind, but participate in the discussion)
Write their thoughts about what they watched (we are not going to dictate lengths but please don't just write one sentence and call it a day lol)
Don't add spoilers in the title, and if you are creating a photo post, please spoiler tag it if the picture reveals too much plot.
Some awkward situations
If there's a drama discussion already hosted, and you want to host, please approach the original host to co-host first. Don't try to double post - it'll be awkward for everyone as the mods will defer to the first host.
If you can't finish hosting the drama, try to get a replacement or let the mods know and we'll automate the discussions.
Mods won't interfere or dictate how people should co-host, but here are some tips:
If you see someone had volunteered already, reply to her comment and ask if you can co-host.
Create a chat room between your co-hosts to agree on schedules: (eg A can do episodes 1-10 and so on)
How closely should the discussion posts follow airing schedules?
We know how crazy CDrama schedules are, but here's a good guide:
Popular idol dramas (for eg Pursuit of Jade, The Double) should follow the airing dates as closely as possible. For eg, if episodes 5-6 dropped on Feb 2, discussion can happen on Feb 3).
Check the masterpost discussion for the drama. If it has above 50-60 comments, it's usually going to be really popular and people would probably be eager to discuss it.
As for other dramas (ie, one that the sub is not clamoring to discuss, I suppose) you can take a slower approach.
For eg, discussions for Swords into Plowshares and Man's Inhumanity to Man are still taking place even after the drama has stopped airing.
How do I write discussion posts?
Structure the discussions the way you want. Some ideas:
"Classic method" recap of what happened in selected episodes with thoughts.
Share favourite moments in the episodes you discussed
Group episode discussions according to character development
Express episodes / posts about the ending
We don't expect hosts to pay for express episodes!
You can ask the mods to create special express threads for the drama so that you, the host, won't be exposed to spoilers.
For commenters
Please do not discuss future episodes in a thread unless someone specifically ask for information/spoilers. And if you do share, please spoiler tag it.
For example, do not discuss plot points for episode 26 in a post about episode 19.
Those who spoil future episodes will get their comments removed.
Hosts, if you see these spoilery comments, feel free to report them.
Lately, we have been getting more submissions from either non-members or new members.
Important: You need to join the sub to post. Posts from non-members will be filtered for review no matter how long they've been in the sub.
New members generally do not have enough of what we call community karma - points you earn as you interact in the sub (for example commenting on people's threads).
As a result, posts from new members or members who have not joined the sub are filtered and not published immediately; the mods have to review and approve them.
However, members of this sub are required to do one extra step: acknowledge the sub's rules.
Lately, we've been having submissions from new members or people who have not joined the sub. I've had to sadly remove a lot of them because they have not acknowledged the rules despite reminders.
I blame Reddit's UI for this more than anything else. Acknowledging rules should have been a built-in feature long ago, but we use a plugin to do this. It is not the best, admittedly, but it is way better than the previous system we had.
So, if your post is not appearing in the sub:
Return to your post and check the comment attached to it. You should see this:
Follow the link in that comment to the specific post asking you to acknowledge the rules. FYI the link to the rules acknowledgement.
You need to click on the downward arrow to read the rules and toggle "I confirm I have read rule...". Once you scroll to the bottom you'd be able to acknowledge the rules.
Once you acknowledge the rules, you will be given a special flair with the words "Read Rules". This is how the mods can see that you've done so.
Please refrain from removing the flair until you have been in the sub for a while. The more you interact, the more your community karma builds, and eventually your posts will not be filtered anymore.
If you remove this flair, the mods will assume you have not read or acknowledged the rules, and we will not approve the post.
If a reminder has been sent to you, it's best for you to repost. Usually quite some time has passed and your post may be low in the sub's feed and missed by people.
Why do we do this?
You are probably wondering why we go through all the trouble of doing this: it ensures members coming to the sub know our culture and are familiar with the rules. I know it is a pain to acknowledge the rules, but we do not want new members to be surprised when we remove a post, and we do not want people who think that the sub's rules are a "suggestion" to wreck havoc in the sub.
We take a lot of care to ensure that the sub has quality content and is a safe, fun place for everyone.
I hope this is clear. Please ask me any questions if you have them. :)
For more info about the rules acknowledgement process: Please read this post.
PS: If you've been in this sub for quite some time and have been posting without a problem, you do not need to acknowledge the rules. I understand that the "read rules" flair isn't something some members want on their profile. ;)

The disgraced Empress Shen Miao dies unjustly in the cold palace, but unexpectedly returns to her teenage years. She sees the true, deceitful faces of those around her and sets out on a strong path of revenge, changing the tragic fate of the Shen family. ~~ Adapted from the novel "The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage" (重生之将门毒后) by Qian Shan Cha Ke (千山茶客).
Deposed Empress Shen Miao dies in the Cold Palace, her grievances unresolved. By a twist of fate, she returns to her girlhood, finally seeing through the hypocrisy of those around her. Determined and unyielding, she sets out on a fierce path of revenge, rewriting the Shen family’s tragic fate of sons lost and clan destroyed.
Along the way, she crosses paths with the young marquis Xie Jingxing – outwardly a frivolous dandy, but in truth shrewd, calculating, and shrouded in mystery. From mutual suspicion to sworn allies, the two join forces to challenge entrenched powers and bring stability to the realm.
The Legitimate Daughter of the Military Family: Stabilizing the Realm 《将门嫡女之定乾坤》, also known as Rebirth of the Poisonous Empress of the Military Lineage 《重生之将门毒后》, is an period romance novel by Qian Shan Cha Ke 千山茶客, a contracted author of Xiaoxiang Academy 潇湘书院. The first volume was published by Qingdao Publishing House in October 2016, followed by the concluding volume in February 2017. Each volume was priced at ¥59.80. In 2021, it was confirmed that the novel would be adapted into a television drama by Haotian Media.
The novel is published in two volumes and centers on Shen Miao, the legitimate daughter of a military family. After being betrayed and killed in her previous life because of her obsessive love for Prince Ding, Fu Xiuyi, she is reborn in her youth. Determined to protect her family, she joins forces with Xie Jingxing, the young heir of the Marquis of Lin'an, to seek revenge and seize power.
After her rebirth, Shen Miao outwits conspirators both within and outside her family while her relationship with Xie Jingxing – who outwardly appears to be a carefree playboy but is secretly a prince of Great Liang – evolves from hostility to partnership. Together, they gradually dismantle the imperial conspiracy and ultimately rule the realm side by side.
Through Shen Miao's transformation from an innocent noblewoman into a master strategist, the novel blends family feuds, court intrigue, and emotional conflict into a dual narrative of revenge and redemption. Centered on the theme of "rebirth and rising against fate," it features memorable characters such as the spirited young Xie Jingxing, incorporates iconic lines, and develops a romance built on two equally formidable protagonists working together.

Drama Name
The Chinese drama title 金枝 can be translated as “Golden Branch.”
“金枝玉叶 (jīn zhī yù yè) is a Chinese idiom that literally means “golden branches and jade leaves.”
It first appeared in 《古今注·舆服》 Gu Jin Zhu · Yu Fu (Records of Past and Present · Carriages and Attire) by Cui Bao of the Jin Dynasty. Originally, it referred to the beautiful branches and leaves of plants, but later it was mostly used to denote descendants of emperors. Today, it can metaphorically describe someone of noble birth or someone physically delicate.
“晋·崔豹《古今注·舆服》:\
(Jin Dynasty) Cui Bao’s Gu Jin Zhu · Yu Fu (Records of Past and Present · Carriages and Attire):
“与蚩尤战于涿鹿之野,常有五色云气金枝玉叶止于帝上。”
“When (the Emperor) battled Chi You on the plains of Zhuolu, there were often five-colored auspicious clouds, and ‘golden branches and jade leaves’ would gather above the Emperor.”
Chen Que Er, mistaken for the Changying Princess Zhao Jin Zhi, enters Rongguo Mansion and secretly builds a powerful identity in the capital. She joins forces with Xianning Prince Lu Xingzhi, and together they establish the Xianyi Society, set trends with Chinese fashion, and run the Wan Guo Hui restaurant, all while navigating the city's political and social circles.
As they rise in power, they become entangled in court disputes. Ultimately, they expose the truth, rescuing slaves from the ruthless Wang Ji Xun, and emerge stronger from the crises they face together.

Not an adaptation
Note: At the time of posting, the MDL synopsis includes the novel “Born in the Purple” (金枝) written by Shao Li (邵丽). The novel and author are not mentioned in the official announcement by the production team. Looking at the novel summary on Baidu Baike, it doesn't appear that the two are related.
Here are the links to the novel and author in case anyone is interested:
* Author: Shao Li 邵丽
* Novel: Born in the Purple 金枝
Chen Que'er [played by Li Yitong], a young woman of slave status, is mistakenly identified as a noblewoman of the imperial clan [typically the daughter of a prince].
After entering the Duke's Manor, she refuses to live as a puppet. Relying on her intelligence and resourcefulness, she builds a commercial empire, making names such as "Xianyi Society" and "Wanguo Hall" renowned throughout Dongjing. She forcefully carves out a place for herself among the powerful elite.
Through her rivalry and cooperation with the Prince Xianning [Lu Xingzhi played by Chen Xingxu], she remains true to herself. In the end, she joins forces with him to uncover a conspiracy and liberate countless slaves sharing her lowly status, completing a legendary journey from personal rise to fighting for an entire oppressed class.

I admit I dropped Against the Current around episode 39. The second half of the drama felt underwhelming, and I grew increasingly apathetic to the supposed love story between the FL and ML, and the FL becoming the bestest, most special and smartest woman to have ever walked the earth.
I did enjoy the performance of Tan Songyun as Lanxiang/Shen Jialan, and I thought Liu Xueyi as Lin Jinqi was solid, if not spectacular (don't kill me, LXY fans! *ducks*). The rest of the cast was good too, and there was a lot of things to enjoy in the overall production, like the way the first part of the drama conveyed the plight of the servants (refreshing to see the underdogs in ancient times put front and center, and it was a shame that focus shifted to the upper class Lin family in the second half), the cinematography (except the fight scenes, which the director didn't seem to know how to do properly, while the domestic scenes were beautifully shot).
The OST with Zhou Shen's theme song was hauntingly beautiful.
Sadly the drama eventually got bogged down by wanting too much but with too little runtime to handle it (I know I'm not the only one who got annoyed with the endless time-skips), and the feminism went from subtle and appropriate to outright preaching, to the point where the drama felt more like a lecture than trying to tell a good story.
Sure, life for women sucked in ancient times, and in Ming dynasty especially. I already know this, don't need 40+ episodes of drama trying to force-feed me that women should have access to education and handling their own finances or that patriarchy is terrible. I got it the first time.
But I do have one takeaway from this drama:
Li Meng is a freaking amazing actress.
Seriously, she stole every scene. Even when they gave her character a cheesy monologue in her final scene, I couldn't stop watching because she was so mesmerizing.
A bit like Deng Kai in Pursuit of Jade, who also completely stole every scene he was in, though unlike DK, Li Meng's role was meatier and more nuanced (but the writing in ATC is generally better than in POJ, despite its flaws with the overeager preachiness).
In a general great cast, Li Meng's portrayal of Zhao Xintang was the highlight. I grew tired of the FL (despite a great performance from Tan Songyun, it's the writers' fault, not hers that Lanxiang got boring), but never of Xintang. Her story, especially in the first half, was so compelling that I wished she had been the FL. She had all the nuance and complexity that was denied the FL, who got turned into a saint and brain-wise OP character.
I've watched her before in The Double (which I droped in the first half, though I enjoyed her unhinged performance), but in ATC she really got to show how talented she is.
I'd encourage people to watch ATC just for her, at least the first half.
Hopefully she'll get even more prominent roles in the future.

We pick up where we left off, with Bingwen and Wanqiao in the middle of a heated argument. Wanqiao accuses Bingwen of forgetting their original purpose in infiltrating the Yu family and abandoning both their cause and her because of his growing feelings for Jinxuan.
As the argument escalates, Wanqiao threatens to give up her position as the 3rd Concubine, prompting an enraged Bingwen to slap her across the face. Once they have both calmed down, Bingwen assures Wanqiao that he will never allow anyone or anything to distract him from their ultimate goal. Wanqiao appears satisfied with his reassurance and leaves, although it's clear that the relationship between the siblings has deteriorated considerably.
Meanwhile, to absolutely no one's surprise, Xueting is alive after all. Unfortunately, he's being forced to work as a labourer in a mine. One night, Xueting secretly gathers a group of fellow labourers and begins organising an escape. Unbeknownst to them, however, Bingwen and Mou Linsen have already caught wind of their plans and are observing them from a distance.
Mou Linsen reveals that he has been reluctant to kill Xueting because he recognises his talent from his days running the Revival Paper. Bingwen agrees that Xueting is a man with considerable drive and courage. When Xueting finally puts his escape plan into action, Bingwen takes out a gun and shoots him, deliberately crippling him. His intention is to break Xueting's pride and leave him consumed by hatred, which they can later exploit to turn him against Changxuan.
Okay, I can already see where this is heading. I wouldn't be surprised if Xueting is eventually fed some ridiculous lie about Changxuan being responsible for the illegal mine or his suffering. Duhhhh.
Back at the Yu residence, Jinxuan's maid is putting away Bingwen's clothes when she notices that he had left a pair of baby shoes in his pocket. The maid remarks on how attentive Bingwen has been throughout Jinxuan's pregnancy, even leaving detailed instructions to ensure that she receives proper care. However, when Jinxuan lies down to rest, she suddenly experiences abdominal discomfort. To the maid's horror, Jinxuan begins bleeding.
At the hospital, the doctor informs the female members of the Yu family that Jinxuan has suffered a threatened miscarriage. Fortunately, her condition has stabilised, and both she and the baby are out of immediate danger. Baoru is understandably alarmed and asks what could have caused the bleeding. The doctor suspects that Jinxuan may have been exposed to something harmful.
Wanqiao, who is also present, looks noticeably unsettled upon hearing that Jinxuan's pregnancy has survived the ordeal. Baoru immediately orders a thorough investigation.
Back at the Yu residence, the entire family gathers to hear the findings. The butler reports that nothing suspicious has been found in the food or drinks Jinxuan consumed over the past few days. However, Qiujuan, Jinxuan's maid, mentions that her mistress recently began using a medicinal pillow gifted to her by Pingjun. Uh-huh. Here we go.
Pingjun readily admits that she gave Jinxuan the pillow, while Changxuan adds that he personally purchased the fabric used to make it. Nevertheless, Zhongquan orders the pillow to be brought in for examination. The family doctor inspects its contents and discovers that, mixed among the calming herbs, is a substantial quantity of musk, which he claims could disturb the pregnancy after prolonged exposure.
Zhongquan, who is already prejudiced against Pingjun, immediately accuses her of deliberately trying to harm Jinxuan and her unborn child. Changxuan springs to Pingjun's defence, firmly declaring that he believes in her innocence.
When Changxuan points out that Pingjun has absolutely no reason to bear a grudge against Jinxuan, Zhongquan counters that she might be jealous of Jinxuan's unborn child potentially becoming the first grandson of the Yu family. Both Baoru and Qixuan speak up for Pingjun, although Qixuan also reminds Changxuan that he must remain impartial.
Pingjun herself agrees to cooperate fully with the investigation, determined to clear her name and uncover the truth. Changxuan then requests a private conversation with his parents. We aren't shown what they discuss, but when Changxuan returns to the rest of the family, he informs Pingjun that Zhongquan has agreed to give him 3 days to investigate the matter. He reassures her that she has nothing to worry about.
That night, Bingwen drives Wanqiao somewhere in his car. After a while, he can no longer contain his fury and abruptly drags Wanqiao out of the vehicle. He points his gun at her, having realised that she was responsible for endangering Jinxuan's pregnancy, but Wanqiao is completely unrepentant. She coldly reminds Bingwen that the unborn child isn't just his baby. It's a child of the Yu family. Oh wow, between these two siblings, I honestly don't know who's more cold-hearted.
Wanqiao reminds Bingwen of their shared hatred for Zhongquan and the hardships they endured growing up, when they had nobody to rely on except each other. With a rather maniacal smile, she declares that killing the Yu family's first grandson would be an excellent way to begin their revenge. Bingwen can only stare at her, almost as though he no longer recognises the person standing before him.
Meanwhile, Xueting awakens to an excruciating pain in his injured leg. He repeatedly attempts to get up, but his leg can no longer support him. Eventually, he collapses onto the ground, his face contorted with pain and hatred.
Back at the Yu residence, Changxuan personally takes charge of investigating the medicinal pillow. That night, Nanny Zhou is summoned to meet him, while a suspicious-looking Qiuluo lurks nearby, clearly uneasy. In a flashback, we see Wanqiao approaching Qiuluo after the latter was reassigned to kitchen duties.
Returning to the present, Changxuan asks Nanny Zhou whether she has noticed any servants developing skin rashes from exposure to musk. Initially, Nanny Zhou cannot recall anyone, but eventually she remembers a particular maid who has been wearing long sleeves to cover her wrists, despite the increasingly warm weather.
A search of Qiuluo's room soon uncovers a container of ointment used to treat skin rashes, and her roommate reveals that Qiuluo left approximately half an hour earlier. Outside, in the pouring rain, Qiuluo attempts to flee, but before she can get away, a speeding car deliberately runs her over. The driver, of course, has been hired by Wanqiao.
Jinxuan eventually returns to the Yu residence to recuperate. With Pingjun's innocence now established, Baoru apologises on Zhongquan's behalf for jumping to conclusions and wrongly accusing her. Baoru also announces that, from now on, every servant will undergo stricter background checks by the household butler to prevent any more dangerous individuals from infiltrating the family. Unfortunately, she has absolutely no idea that the biggest viper of them all is sitting right behind her.
Changxuan visits Zhongquan in his study and requests that his father personally apologise to Pingjun for accusing her without evidence. Lolol, the audacity of Changxuan. But I have to admire how firmly he stands up for his wife.
Naturally, Zhongquan is having none of it. He refuses to lower his dignity as head of the family by apologising to his daughter-in-law. Changxuan doesn't press the apology any further, but he insists that Zhongquan must at least show Pingjun some basic respect. Zhongquan is furious that his own son now dares to lecture him on how to behave, all because of Pingjun.
Changxuan calmly counters that if his father's treatment of Pingjun doesn't improve, the two of them will simply move out of the Yu residence. But Zhongquan is every bit as stubborn as his son and tells Changxuan to do as he pleases.
Elsewhere, Jinxuan has a heart-to-heart conversation with Baoru. She confesses that she initially didn't want the baby, but the moment she realised she might lose it, something changed. The possibility of losing her child frightened her, and she discovered a maternal attachment she hadn't expected to feel.
Having come so close to losing the pregnancy, Jinxuan is now determined to carry it to term. Unbeknownst to them, Bingwen is standing outside the room, listening to their conversation.
Later, Pingjun brings tea to Changxuan in his study and thanks him for standing by her when she was suspected of causing Jinxuan's miscarriage. Changxuan promptly pulls Pingjun onto his lap and tells her about the private conversation he had with his parents earlier.
In a flashback, we discover that Changxuan told his parents he and Pingjun haven't consummated their marriage.
He explains that Pingjun has yet to fully accept him as her husband and that he intends to respect her wishes rather than pressure her into physical intimacy. His parents' reactions absolutely cracked me up. Baoru is so exasperated that she smacks Changxuan on the chest, while Zhongquan, looking unusually flustered, awkwardly asks whether his son has, errrrrrr, some kind of performance problem in his nether region.
Back in the present, Changxuan tells Pingjun that Baoru has been asking about their future plans. The conversation soon takes a romantic turn, and the two begin kissing passionately. Changxuan's hands eventually move towards the buttons of Pingjun's dress, but she immediately stops him. A visibly disappointed Changxuan asks whether she still hasn't allowed him into her heart, and Pingjun struggles to find an answer. However, Changxuan doesn't push her any further. Instead, he tenderly kisses her forehead and reassures her that he won't pressure her until she is truly ready.
Meanwhile, Xueting remains in captivity, still struggling with the pain of his injury. He recalls overhearing two guards discussing Pingjun's marriage to Changxuan. If looks could kill, Changxuan would already be six feet under.
Elsewhere, Bingwen and Wanqiao have another conversation about their plans. Bingwen reaffirms his commitment to destroying the Yu family, but this time he makes one request: Wanqiao must spare his unborn child. Wanqiao dismisses his plea, arguing that the baby should never be brought into the world in the first place.
Drawing from her own experience, she admits that she has never been able to truly love her own child, Wanxuan, simply because the child belongs to the Yu family. Wanqiao reminds Bingwen that they've already gone too far to turn back. She promises to remain by his side until the bitter end, even offering to dirty her own hands if he can no longer bring himself to do what is necessary. When Wanqiao reaches out to touch him, however, Bingwen looks emotionally withdrawn. It's like something between them has already broken beyond repair.
Back at the Yu residence, the family welcomes the return of Jun Daiti, an old family friend and Changxuan's childhood friend. Daiti is a modern, forward-thinking young woman whose father has connections with the American military. She also has plans to establish a girls' school in Nanhuai. Pingjun watches as Changxuan and Daiti interact with the easy familiarity of two people who have known each other since childhood. Their comfortable camaraderie leaves Pingjun feeling rather left out, and to make it worse, she later overhears two maids gossiping about how Changxuan and Daiti were apparently almost betrothed as children.
That night, Pingjun seems distracted, and Changxuan immediately notices that something is bothering her. When she admits that she has a lot on her mind, Changxuan smiles knowingly and asks whether she's jealous, but Pingjun immediately denies it. Changxuan is clearly not convinced of course.
He reassures her that Daiti is nothing more than a childhood friend and that Pingjun is the only woman he loves. But Changxuan being Changxuan, he simply cannot resist slipping in a cheeky remark about how he's still waiting to enjoy his proper, legitimate status as her husband. He never misses an opportunity, does he?
Pingjun reminds him that he promised to give her more time. Changxuan assures her that he's a man of his word and intends to keep that promise. The episode ends with Xueting being released from forced labour. Apparently, someone has purchased his freedom. Oho, just like that, Xueting is back in play.
Episode 29
Xueting is brought before Mou Linsen, who congratulates him on surviving his ordeal and expresses admiration for how calm and composed he remains despite everything he's been through. But Xueting is no longer the naive young man he once was. He knows perfectly well that Mou Linsen hasn't rescued him out of the goodness of his heart and that he must want something in return.
Mou Linsen tells Xueting how Changxuan supposedly tried every trick in the book to prevent him and Pingjun from leaving Nanhuai, and how he subsequently took advantage of Pingjun's amnesia to marry her. He then offers to help Xueting seek revenge against Changxuan, praising his journalistic talents and his ability to use the press to exert pressure on powerful warlords. To complete Xueting's transformation into our latest villain, Mou Linsen presents him with a rather fitting gift: an elegant walking stick, befitting his new status as a gentleman.
Meanwhile, our loverboy Changxuan is missing his wifey! He calls Pingjun from his office to sweetly inform her that he's sending her some bayberries. He's about to hang up when he realises that Pingjun seems reluctant to end their conversation. Changxuan couldn't be happier, and he immediately takes the opportunity to flirt with his wife over the telephone.
After their call ends, Pingjun approaches Changxuan's desk and takes out their marriage certificate. The document still bears only Changxuan's signature in the bottom-left corner. Pingjun smiles as she looks at it and quietly tells herself that she will be waiting for Changxuan to come home.
Elsewhere, Mou Linsen and Bingwen are impressed by how quickly Xueting has secured a position in the Propaganda Department and arranged an eventual meeting with Tao Ziyi. Mou Linsen then hands Bingwen a document containing information about a dark conspiracy from the past. It turns out that the Yu Army's defeat during the Qingshiling campaign wasn't simply a military failure.
According to the document, a group of men disguised as Yu soldiers intercepted a vital supply convoy, depriving the legitimate Yu forces of desperately needed military resources while making off with their supplies. Soon afterwards, a newspaper article exposes another shocking allegation.
According to the report, Tao Zili had raised funds supposedly intended to support the Yu Army during its war against the Wan forces years earlier. Instead, he had secretly diverted gold bars to the enemy. The betrayal allegedly left Mingxuan's regiment hopelessly outgunned and ultimately contributed to its destruction at the hands of the Wan Army.
Naturally, Zhongquan is furious to learn that Tao Zili's treachery might have played a role in his beloved eldest son's death. Changxuan also sees the newspaper report and immediately rushes back to Nanhuai. Unfortunately, before he gets home, all hell has already broken loose at the Yu residence.
Pingjun has been dragged before Mingxuan's memorial tablet and forced to kneel. Zhongquan accuses her father of causing Mingxuan's death through his greed and declares that, as Tao Zili's daughter, Pingjun must atone for her father's sins. You're seriously forcing an amnesiac woman to kneel and apologise for the alleged crimes of a father she doesn't even remember? If you've got the guts, Zhongquan, go after Tao Zili himself. Or at least confront someone who actually knows what happened! But noooooo, let's make Pingjun suffer instead. Thank you, writers, for giving me yet another entry for Pingjun's ever-expanding trauma log.
The rest of the family tries to reason with Zhongquan, pointing out that Pingjun had absolutely nothing to do with the alleged betrayal, but the stubborn old man refuses to listen.
And so poor Pingjun is forced to kneel throughout the entire night, right up until daybreak, before the memorial tablet of a brother-in-law she never even met, supposedly paying for the sins of a father she has no recollection of.
Changxuan finally arrives home the following morning, and disregarding his father's order, he shoots open the locked door to get to Pingjun. Changxuan may be his own worst enemy at times, but you really have to admire how fiercely he stands up for Pingjun whenever someone mistreats her. He doesn't give a damn whether the person responsible happens to be his own father.
Changxuan bursts into the room and immediately goes to Pingjun, reassuring her that he's finally home. Unfortunately, Zhongquan arrives almost simultaneously, and father and son launch into yet another heated confrontation. The argument quickly turns personal, with Zhongquan accusing Changxuan of never having liked Mingxuan since childhood and even blaming him for dragging his elder brother down during the battle. Changxuan responds with a long, piercing stare. Wow, the mixture of hurt, contempt, anger and frustration in Cheng Lei's expression here! There are so many unspoken emotions in that single look that I simply have to make a GIF of it.
As Changxuan prepares to carry Pingjun away, Zhongquan attempts to stop him. Changxuan finally snaps and practically dares his father to kill him. After all, he bitterly remarks, Zhongquan must have imagined killing him countless times since Mingxuan's death.
That night, Pingjun reflects on everything that has happened and struggles with the possibility that her own father was directly responsible for Mingxuan's death. Feeling guilty and uncertain about how she can continue facing the Yu family, she suggests that perhaps she and Changxuan should separate. Changxuan falls silent for a moment before asking why she always tries to push him away whenever they encounter an obstacle. Pingjun explains that she doesn't want to become a burden to him, but Changxuan firmly reassures her that she will never be a burden to him in this lifetime. As her husband, he wants her to know that she can always rely on him. He then tenderly kisses her forehead, and the two share a loving embrace.
Changxuan, Boren and Ruitong begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the Yu Army's defeat. Ruitong reports that Mingxuan supposedly had to change his planned retreat route because Datong Bridge collapsed during heavy rain on the day of the battle. Something about the timing immediately strikes Changxuan as suspicious. Upon examining the old combat reports, they discover that Zhangjia Village, near Heishitan, had been caught in the crossfire.
However, after the fighting ended the following day, the surviving villagers reportedly crossed Datong Bridge. If the bridge was still standing the following day, how could it have collapsed during the battle? That would mean the reason given for Mingxuan's sudden change of route was false.
Changxuan learns that the combat report was written by Mingxuan's former adjutant, Jiang Chongyi, who was subsequently discharged from the army following the Battle of Heishitan. Determined to uncover the truth, Changxuan visits Jiang Chongyi at his residence. He questions the former adjutant about the battle and, in particular, why Mingxuan deviated from the original plan.
Jiang Chongyi looks noticeably nervous but maintains that Datong Bridge had been washed away by the heavy rain. Changxuan immediately confronts him with the evidence that villagers crossed the bridge the very next day. In other words, the official report was forged.
Jiang Chongyi finally admits that the account was fabricated. According to him, the Yu Army's planned ambush was discovered by the Wan forces because of a flaw in Mingxuan's deployment. To cover up his mistake, Mingxuan changed the original battle plan. Changxuan refuses to believe that his brother would have made such a blunder, but Jiang Chongyi sticks to his story.
That night, Changxuan stays up late poring over the combat reports. Although Jiang Chongyi's explanation makes sense, Changxuan still finds it difficult to believe that Mingxuan would have deliberately concealed such a serious mistake.
After Changxuan leaves to wash up, Pingjun begins putting away the documents scattered across his desk. That's when she notices a report concerning a classified operation led by Changxuan himself. According to the report, Changxuan had commanded a small detachment to destroy an enemy weapons depot, and the mission was recorded as a success.
Pingjun begins to wonder whether Changxuan's operation might somehow be connected to Mingxuan's decision to deviate from the original battle plan. Elsewhere, Zhongquan summons Changxuan and demands an update on his investigation. Changxuan looks visibly troubled and remains unusually quiet.
His father immediately assumes the worst, accusing him of merely pretending to investigate the matter to protect Pingjun. Zhongquan even accuses Changxuan of never having truly cared about Mingxuan. He gives Changxuan a document proving Tao Xili secretly helping the Wan army. According to the document, a Tao family merchant vessel bearing Yu Army markings had secretly transported field guns to the Wan forces.
These additional weapons supposedly strengthened the enemy's firepower and contributed to the Yu Army's defeat at Heishitan. Zhongquan then gives Changxuan an ultimatum. Either divorce Pingjun, or Zhongquan will shoot her himself.
Changxuan, who has remained silent until now, finally produces the combat reports revealing Mingxuan's alleged error in his deployment plan. But Zhongquan refuses to believe that his beloved eldest son could have been responsible for such a mistake. Instead, he accuses Changxuan of fabricating evidence simply to protect Pingjun.
Changxuan responds bitterly that, in his father's eyes, Mingxuan could never do anything wrong. No matter what evidence is presented, Mingxuan will always be the perfect son, while Changxuan will always be the one at fault. Zhongquan insists that Mingxuan would never have made such an elementary military mistake. Changxuan finally loses his temper.
He shouts that he doesn't give a damn whether his father believes him or not and declares that Mingxuan was responsible for the defeat at Heishitan. Just as their argument reaches boiling point, Jiang Chongyi enters the study, accompanied by Pingjun, Baoru and Minru. Jiang Chongyi finally reveals that Mingxuan wasn't responsible for the army's defeat after all.
In a flashback, we learn that Pingjun had secretly sought out Jiang Chongyi to question him about what really happened during the battle. She correctly deduced that Jiang Chongyi must have been concealing something even more significant. After all, why would a man who had served Mingxuan loyally risk tarnishing his former commander's reputation unless he was trying to protect someone else? Pingjun suspects that the person he's protecting is Changxuan. She tells Jiang Chongyi that Changxuan has never truly moved on from Mingxuan's death. Although learning the truth may hurt him, she believes that facing it might finally allow Changxuan to truly move on from Mingxuan's death.
Back in the present, Jiang Chongyi explains that Mingxuan had personally sworn him to secrecy. We then return to the Battle of Heishitan in another flashback. Mingxuan received a report that Changxuan had led a small detachment to bomb an enemy weapons depot.
Although the operation itself was successful, Changxuan's premature attack alerted the enemy and compromised the Yu Army's original ambush plan.
With their strategy exposed, Mingxuan had little choice but to confront the Wan Army head-on. Rather than allow his younger brother to shoulder the consequences, Mingxuan declared that he would take full responsibility. Later a younger, impulsive Changxuan arrived at the height of the battle, eager to prove himself. Even in the middle of the fighting, Mingxuan was concerned about his younger brother's safety. He warned Changxuan against recklessly joining the battle, but the stubborn young man ignored him and rushed forward anyway.
Back in the present, Jiang Chongyi explains that Mingxuan instructed him to conceal the truth in the official report. Mingxuan feared that the knowledge of having compromised the battle plan would be too much for Changxuan to bear, especially when he was still a young soldier at the beginning of his military career. Changxuan is left completely stunned. He initially refuses to believe Jiang Chongyi, accusing him of lying, and even insists that Mingxuan would never have gone to such extraordinary lengths simply to protect him.
Ahhhhh, my heart really breaks for Changxuan here. You can see just how devastating the revelation is. He's so overwhelmed that he can barely process what he's hearing, and his immediate reaction is anger and denial, almost as though rejecting the truth is the only way he can protect himself from its implications. But the revelations aren't over yet. Zhongquan finally speaks.
He tells Changxuan that he knows his son has resented him for years because he believes his father chose to save Mingxuan instead of him during the battle. We finally learn what actually happened that day.
In a flashback, we see Zhongquan checking on Mingxuan's condition before rushing over to Changxuan, who was trapped beneath the wreckage. Zhongquan personally attempted to remove the debris and free his younger son. However, when the soldiers managed to extract Mingxuan from the ruins, Zhongquan temporarily left Changxuan's side.
At that moment, Changxuan regained consciousness just long enough to overhear his father saying that saving Mingxuan was what matters most. It's the remark that has haunted him ever since. But Changxuan lost consciousness again shortly afterward and never witnessed what happened next. Zhongquan actually returned to his side and insisted that his younger son must also be rescued, despite the lack of available reinforcements. A younger Bingwen offred to help extract Changxuan from the wreckage.
When the Wan forces launched another attack, Zhongquan refused to abandon Changxuan. However, his advisers disregarded his orders and forcibly carried him away from the battlefield, despite his protests. Then comes yet another heartbreaking revelation. Mingxuan, who had already been evacuated for medical treatment, regained consciousness while being transported away from the battlefield. His first concern was Changxuan's safety, and he ordered the soldiers to turn the vehicle around, determined to return and rescue his younger brother. Unfortunately, as the vehicle turned back towards the battlefield, it triggered a landmine. The resulting explosion killed everyone aboard, including Mingxuan.
The way Changxuan cries like a broken man *sob*
So after all these years, Changxuan is finally learning that the brother he believed had overshadowed him throughout his life actually died trying to save him. And the father he believed had abandoned him had, in fact, fought to remain by his side.
Back in the present, Changxuan struggles to process everything he's just heard. He lets out an anguished laugh, caught somewhere between disbelief and overwhelming guilt. After a moment, he turns towards Jiang Chongyi with a bitter, almost derisive expression. He still refuses to believe the story, insisting that Jiang Chongyi must be fabricating everything to preserve Mingxuan's reputation. But Zhongquan reveals that he and Baoru have known the truth all along, and they simply never intended to tell Changxuan. That is when Changxuan finally begins to break.
With tears streaming down his face, he turns to Baoru and asks whether Mingxuan really died because of him. Baoru can only apologise for keeping the truth from him all these years. Changxuan is utterly devastated. Unable to accept what he's hearing, he repeatedly insists that everyone is lying to him, and then storms out of Zhongquan's study, with Pingjun following behind.
Later that night, Changxuan stands alone before Mingxuan's memorial tablet. His grief finally erupts into anger, and he bitterly tells his brother that he had no right to sacrifice his life for him.
Changxuan never asked for such a sacrifice, and he certainly didn't need Mingxuan's self-righteousness. But beneath that anger lies an unbearable sense of guilt. His voice breaks as he tells Mingxuan that he would have gladly faced a court-martial for his mistake and be the one who died rather than have his brother sacrifice his life for him.
The guilt soon becomes too much to bear, and Changxuan angrily declares that he will never be grateful for what Mingxuan did. Completely overwhelmed, he sinks to the floor and breaks down in tears. Outside, Pingjun can only watch helplessly as Changxuan finally confronts the grief, guilt and resentment that have haunted him for so many years.
Meanwhile, the episode shifts to a rather different development. Tao Ziyi is waiting at a restaurant for a blind date arranged by her uncle. And guess who turns up? XUETING!
Except this is no longer the struggling journalist we once knew. Xueting is now the Head of the Propaganda Department, dressed every inch like a wealthy and powerful gentleman, complete with his walking stick. Ziyi has absolutely no intention of marrying him and is about to leave when Xueting stops her by revealing that her uncle has been secretly smuggling large quantities of contraband salt and iron ore, and that he was the one who personally prevented the scandal from being published in the newspapers.
Ziyi is unimpressed and still doesn't understand why she should agree to marry him. Xueting then reminds her that they have something rather important in common. They both want to destroy Yu Changxuan.
He proposes that they join forces, with their marriage serving as a convenient way for him to secure the Tao family's financial backing. With Governor Chu supporting him, Xueting is confident that it's only a matter of time before he brings Changxuan down.

The Tragedy of Mingxuan's Death and Zhongquan's True Feelings for Changxuan
You know what I love about this drama, apart from Cheng Lei's portrayal of Changxuan? It's how events that we assume are already established facts, particularly those buried in the characters' pasts, turn out to have another side to them. Just when we think we understand what happened, the writers reveal something that completely changes how we interpret the characters and their relationships. Episode 29 delivers perhaps one of the most heartbreaking revelations yet.
Changxuan was never the unloved child he believed himself to be.
Throughout the drama, I often wondered why Zhongquan seems to hold his younger son in such contempt. Why was he so emotionally distant towards Changxuan during his childhood? And why, even after Changxuan proved himself a capable military commander, did their relationship remain so strained? Zhongquan seldom speaks of him with warmth or pride. Instead, Changxuan seems to spend his entire life living in Mingxuan's shadow, constantly struggling to earn his father's approval, but this episode finally offers a heartbreaking explanation for Zhongquan's behaviour.
It isn't that Zhongquan doesn't love Changxuan. It's that his love for his surviving son is tangled up with the grief of losing his eldest. We finally see that Zhongquan never simply abandoned Changxuan on the battlefield. Despite being the Commander-in-Chief, whose safety should have been a priority, he personally tried to free his younger son from the wreckage and refused to leave him behind. His subordinates ultimately had to carry him away against his wishes when the enemy attacked again.
The love was always there, even if Changxuan never knew it. However, there's another, far more painful side to this revelation. Changxuan's reckless military decision set off a chain of events that ultimately led to Mingxuan's death. Had he not acted prematurely and compromised the original battle plan, events might have unfolded very differently. I don't think Zhongquan holds Changxuan responsible for deliberately causing his brother's death. After all, Changxuan was still young, inexperienced and eager to prove himself. But knowing that one son's actions contributed to the circumstances in which another son died must be an incredibly bitter pill for any parent to swallow. Perhaps every time Zhongquan looks at Changxuan, he is reminded not only of the son who survived, but also of the son he lost. What makes it even more sad is that Changxuan has spent years interpreting his father's emotional distance as proof that he was never loved.
I think Baoru and Zhongquan deal with their grief very differently. Baoru is generally more open with her emotions, and perhaps that makes it easier for her to express her love for Changxuan without allowing Mingxuan's death to overshadow their relationship. Zhongquan, on the other hand, is a proud, stubborn man who has never been particularly comfortable expressing his feelings. He's accustomed to commanding armies, making difficult decisions and maintaining an authoritative image, not sitting down with his son and having an honest conversation about his grief. Unfortunately, his inability to communicate his love has inflicted years of emotional suffering on Changxuan.
I can sympathise with Zhongquan's grief, but I don't excuse the way he has treated Changxuan. He's repeatedly compared his younger son unfavourably with Mingxuan, dismissed his achievements and allowed their relationship to deteriorate. Whatever his reasons, Changxuan has spent much of his life believing that nothing he does will ever be enough. The truth that might have helped them understand each other was deliberately kept from him for years.
Of course, learning the truth now is hardly a comfort. Imagine spending your entire life resenting your father for supposedly abandoning you and trying to prove yourself against your deceased elder brother, only to discover that the brother you believed had always overshadowed you actually died trying to save your life. How is Changxuan even supposed to begin processing something like that?
I think one of the things this drama does supremely well is exploring Changxuan's complicated feelings towards his elder brother. His grief, guilt, resentment and deep-seated inferiority complex are so wonderfully intertwined that it's difficult to separate one emotion from another. He loves Mingxuan, but he also resents having spent his entire life in his shadow. He mourns his brother's death, but there's also that lingering bitterness of never being able to measure up to him in their father's eyes. Now with the truth revealed, all those conflicting emotions have become even more painful.
It's this emotional complexity that makes Changxuan such a multifaceted and believable character. Because isn't that how relationships work in real life, especially within families? We can love someone dearly and still harbour jealousy, resentment, guilt or even anger towards them. Love doesn't exist in isolation from these darker emotions, and feeling them doesn't make that love any less genuine. I really appreciate that the writers allow Changxuan to experience all these contradictory feelings rather than reducing his relationship with Mingxuan to something as simple as brotherly love or sibling rivalry. Cheng Lei brings those layers to life so beautifully, especially that heartbreaking scene before Mingxuan's memorial tablet.
Talking about Mingxuan, the more we learn about this man, the more he seems like an absolute saint. No, scratch that. Mingxuan IS practically a saint. He's responsible, courageous, loyal, compassionate and fiercely protective of his younger brother. He takes responsibility for a military disaster he didn't cause, deliberately conceals Changxuan's mistake to spare him the consequences and ultimately loses his life trying to rescue him. I'm almost convinced the writers have deliberately made Mingxuan as close to flawless as possible, and I think there's a reason for that.
Mingxuan represents the ideal that Changxuan has spent his entire life being measured against. The constant comparisons between the brothers aren't simply there to show Zhongquan's favouritism. They also highlight just how different the two men are.
Mingxuan is measured, responsible and self-sacrificing. Changxuan, in his younger years and pre-war period, is impulsive, arrogant, reckless and desperate to prove himself. Where Mingxuan seems naturally suited to being the dutiful eldest son, Changxuan struggles against the expectations placed upon him, but there's another important distinction between them.
Mingxuan died young, and in death, his image has become almost untouchable. His virtues are remembered, his sacrifices immortalised, and he remains forever the exemplary son and brother. Changxuan, however, is still alive. Living means making mistakes, hurting people, facing consequences and having to learn from them.
We have watched Changxuan make some truly terrible decisions, especially his relationship with Pingjun. We have also seen his courage, loyalty, compassion and willingness to sacrifice himself for those he loves. He can be incredibly tender one moment and infuriatingly possessive the next. He's far from perfect, and that's what makes him so compelling, which is why I feel that Mingxuan's almost saintly characterisation is a deliberate contrast to Changxuan's imperfections. One brother represents an ideal that has been frozen in time, while the other is a deeply flawed man who is still learning what it means to become a better person. That's what this drama has been about all along. Beneath the romance, political intrigue and warlord conflicts, TLOA is fundamentally the story of Yu Changxuan's personal growth.
He begins as an arrogant young man desperate for recognition, convinced that power and control are the answers to everything. But through war, loss, love and now the devastating truth about his brother's death, he's gradually being forced to confront the consequences of his actions and everything he thought he knew about himself. One thing is certain: Cheng Lei has been absolutely phenomenal at portraying a man who carries so much emotional baggage beneath that proud, commanding exterior. Watching Changxuan angrily reject his brother's sacrifice while simultaneously wishing he had been the one who died instead was heartbreaking.
Bingwen and Wanqiao: An Alliance Beginning to Unravel
I don't know what goes on in Bingwen's mind anymore. He seems to want to have his cake and eat it too. On the one hand, he desperately wants to protect his unborn child, who could become the first grandson of the Yu family. On the other, he's actively plotting the downfall of the very family his child belongs to. How exactly does he expect these two things to coexist?
Does Bingwen seriously believe Mou Linsen's grudge is purely personal and directed only at Changxuan? What does he think that cunning old fox will do once Changxuan and Zhongquan are out of the picture and Bingwen potentially inherits control of the Yu Army? Bingwen's entire position and influence depend on his association with the Yu family. Unlike Mou Linsen, who commands his own military forces and has an extensive network of political connections, Bingwen comes from humble origins and has no independent power base to fall back on. Everything he has accumulated over the years could be taken away from him in an instant. He's incredibly shortsighted if he believes Mou Linsen will simply leave him alone once the Yu family has been destroyed.
Mou Linsen and the Yu Army can never truly coexist. Changxuan's leadership may pose an immediate threat to Mou Linsen's ambitions, but the problem extends beyond Changxuan himself. It's the military strength and political influence of the Yu Army that Mou Linsen ultimately wants to eliminate. Whoever happens to command that army is almost beside the point. Why would Mou Linsen tolerate Bingwen inheriting such a powerful military force when he has spent years trying to undermine it? Then there's Wanqiao.
I find it difficult to reconcile Bingwen's supposed love and concern for his adopted sister with the sacrifices he has expected her to make for their revenge. He willingly allowed Wanqiao to marry into the very family they despise, forcing her to share a bed with a man she hates and bear his child, all in the name of their common cause. That's an extraordinary sacrifice to demand of someone you supposedly love and want to protect. While Bingwen gets to play the devoted husband to Jinxuan and now the doting father-to-be, Wanqiao has spent years trapped in a marriage she never wanted, raising a child she struggles to love because that child is also a member of the Yu family. Can you imagine the resentment that must have been building inside her all these years?
I'm not excusing Wanqiao's actions, especially her willingness to harm an unborn child and her ruthless decision to have Qiuluo murdered. But I think we're witnessing the consequences of years of bitterness, resentment and emotional repression finally catching up with her. Now Bingwen is asking her to spare his unborn child; I can understand why she might see it as a betrayal. Where was that same consideration when she was expected to sacrifice her own happiness and become Zhongquan's concubine?
Wanqiao's patience is wearing dangerously thin, and I'm beginning to wonder how much of her sanity is still intact. Her increasingly reckless actions seems to me that she's losing whatever restraint she once possessed. The more desperate Wanqiao becomes, the more mistakes she makes. Qiuluo's murder is yet another crime that needs to be covered up, and every attempt to conceal their involvement creates another potential weakness in their elaborate conspiracy. The greatest threat to their plans isn't even Changxuan anymore. It's the growing division between Bingwen and Wanqiao themselves. Mou Linsen might not even need to lift a finger. These two are perfectly capable of destroying each other. With so many servants around, how is it that no one has noticed their clandestine meetings? Lol

Kai Dao Tu Mi 《开到荼蘼》 (“Blooming to the End”) is a novel by Hong Kong author Yi Shu 亦舒. It was first published in 1987, with a mainland edition released by Haitian Publishing House in April 1998. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Hong Kong, the novel has also been slated for a screen adaptation.

The story centers on the emotional entanglement between Wang Yunna, Zuo Wensi, and Teng Haiqi, incorporating themes of extramarital affairs, same-sex relationships, and murder while exploring how love evolves from its idealized beginnings to the realities of life.
Wang Yunna was once involved in an affair with Teng Haiqi. After the truth comes to light, Zuo Wensi kills Teng Haiqi and is imprisoned. In the end, Wang Yunna and Zuo Wensi are unable to remain together. The title, Kai Dao Tu Mi 《开到荼蘼》 ("When the túmí flowers bloom"), symbolizes the end of a relationship, drawing on the Chinese idiom 开到荼蘼花事了, which signifies that something beautiful has reached its conclusion.
More details about the idiom 开到荼蘼花事了 are in the next section.
Plot details:
⚠️ Trigger: self-harm
Kai Dao Tu Mi 《开到荼蘼》 (“Blooming to the End”) follows Wang Yunna, who leaves for the United States after suffering a devastating emotional blow. Years earlier, she had been the mistress of Teng Haiqi. Their affair ended violently after love turned to hatred, with Wang Yunna injuring Teng with a knife before attempting to harm herself.
⚠️ Lots of major plot spoilers! ⚠️
Seven years later, she returns to Hong Kong and meets Zuo Wensi, a rising star in the fashion industry. The two become engaged to be married, only for Wang Yunna to discover that Zuo Wensi's brother-in-law is none other than her former lover, Teng Haiqi, triggering a new nightmare. It is also revealed that Zuo Wensi is gay and is being manipulated and controlled by Teng*.
Using his financial influence, Teng forces Wang Yunna to leave Zuo Wensi by offering to repay her family's enormous debts. At the same time, he uses a video of Wang Yunna [likely compromising] to blackmail Zuo Wensi into remaining by his side.
Heartbroken, Wang Yunna decides to leave for North America once again. Just then, news breaks that Teng Haiqi has been murdered. It is later revealed that Zuo Wensi killed Teng after seeing the video of Wang Yunna. He is subsequently sentenced to six years in prison.
In the end, Wang Yunna and Zuo Wensi are never reunited. Like the blooming of the túmí flower, their love reaches its final bloom before coming to an irrevocable end.
*🍉 Note: Fan summaries of the novel state that Zuo Wensi and Teng Haiqi were romantically involved. Teng had invested in Zuo’s business and used this, along with Wang Yunna’s video, to manipulate and control him.
Drama Name:
The Chinese drama title 开到荼蘼 (Kāi Dào Tú Mí) is a literary phrase that literally means “when the túmí flower blooms” or “blooming until the túmí flowers.”
“开到荼蘼花事了” is a Chinese phrase originating from the Song dynasty poet Wang Qi’s (王淇) poem Spring’s End: Strolling Through a Small Garden 《春暮游小园》.
The original line reads:
“开到荼蘼花事了,丝丝天棘出莓墙。”
“When the túmí blooms, the season of flowers comes to an end; fine strands of heavenly brambles emerge beyond the moss-covered wall.”
The túmí is a deciduous shrub in the rose family that produces white flowers in summer. Because it blooms later than other flowers, ancient people regarded it as the marker of the end of the spring flowering season. The phrase uses the blooming of the túmí to symbolize the nearing end of prosperity, serving as a metaphor for the passing of youth, the conclusion of love, or the disappearance of beautiful things.
Dream of the Red Chamber 《红楼梦》 echoes this meaning through the phrase “when youth and splendor reach their peak” (韶华胜极), using flower lots and prophetic verses to foreshadow Sheyue’s fate and the decline of the Jia family.
Wang Qi’s poem established the literary foundation for this imagery. Su Shi’s line “The túmí does not compete with the spring flowers; it blooms in solitude at the very end” 荼蘼不争春,寂寞开最晚 and Ren Zhuozhai’s line “The year’s spring blossoms reach their conclusion with the túmí” 一年春事到荼蘼 both continued this symbolic meaning. Because the túmí does not compete with other flowers in spring, it became a typical image in classical poetry representing the late spring season.

《瓦猫》 Wa Mao is a novella written by Ge Liang, first published in the first issue of Dangdai Bimonthly in 2021.
The novel is one of his “Artisans Series (匠人系列)” of works. Its origins lie in Ge Liang’s involvement in the preservation of the manuscript of 《据几曾看》 Ju Ji Ceng Kan, a book written by his grandfather, Professor Ge Kangyu.
Wa Mao won the novella award at the Second Cao Xueqin Chinese Literature Award.
Using the wa mao (roof cats) as its central thread and witness, the novel depicts the joys and sorrows, separations and reunions of four generations of the Rong family, artisans who make tile cats, amid the changes of the times. Its timeline begins during the Second Sino-Japanese War, passes through the period when educated youth were sent to the countryside, and extends to contemporary tourism development and the renovation of old city districts.
The novel is set in the ancient town of Longquan in southwestern China. From the late 1930s to the mid-1940s, Longquan was a place where the craft of making tile cats was passed down among ceramic artisans. It was also home to several prominent scholars from the National Southwestern Associated University, who re-established important research institutions there, including the Institute of History and Philology of the Academia Sinica, the Tsinghua Institute of Chinese Studies, and the Society for the Study of Chinese Architecture.
Ge Liang brings the surging currents of the times into the everyday lives of artisans, creating a tension between continual change and enduring stillness.
The novel was selected for the Chinese Fiction Society’s 2021 Best Fiction of the Year and Yangtze River Literary Review’s 2021 Annual Literature Rankings.

Okay, so I finally noticed something that helps me differentiate between Wei Rao and A-chou!😭
A-chou has the mark in her eye that Tian Xiwei naturally has, whereas Wei Rao doesn't have that mark at all! I used to find it so difficult to tell them apart, especially when they're dressed similarly, but now that I've noticed this little detail, I can't unsee it. 😭
I'm honestly so glad I finally figured it out because I was getting confused trying to distinguish between the two! Did anyone else notice this, or am I just late to notice this detail?😭

📚 Liao Zhai is also known as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio. It is “a collection of Classical Chinese stories by Qing dynasty writer Pu Songling, comprising close to 500 stories or "marvel tales" in the zhiguai and chuanqi styles, which according to some critics, served to implicitly criticise societal problems. Written over a period of forty years from the late 1600s and ending in the early 1700s, it circulated in manuscripts that were copied and recopied among the author's friends but did not appear in print until 1766. Since then, many of the critically lauded stories have been adapted for other media such as film and television.”
The drama tells of strange and uncanny happenings among ordinary folk. Humans, spirits, demons, and gods mingle in worldly affairs; flowers, trees, birds, and beasts all possess souls. Humans may harbor demonic nature, while demons can grow human hearts. A classic of Eastern ghost tales is brought to life once again – one volume of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (Liao Zhai) that judges good and evil across life and death, and paints the myriad forms of the human world.
A mysterious beauty’s severed head appears in the bustling marketplace. A fox spirit, trapped in the treacherous depths of human desire, struggles to escape her fate. When the Judge of the Underworld descends to swap heads and hearts, chaos erupts. A paper doll awakens to life with the final stroke of a brush, a wooden puppet grows a beating heart, and a withered tree stirs with forbidden longing. In this world where the boundaries between flesh and fantasy blur, ancient magic and human folly collide – revealing that even the most lifeless things may hunger for a soul.

When Cui Xiaoxiao [played by Zhang Miaoyi] descends the mountain for training, she accidentally enters a distorted spacetime from two hundred years in the past. In this “wrong world / spacetime (错世 cuò shì),” she meets a young man, Wei Jie [played by Ao Ruipeng], and through a series of twists of fate, she ends up taking his place on the path of tribulation and becoming a demon.
⚠️ Plot spoilers! ⚠️
This fated encounter in the mistaken world causes Cui Xiaoxiao’s powers to greatly advance, while at the same time she becomes regarded by the world as a demonic figure, suffering repeated physical and emotional injuries. Nevertheless, she responds positively, doing everything she can to relieve others’ hardships, while also seeking opportunities to return to her own world.
In the process, she gradually comes to understand Wei Jie’s inner world and discovers that he is only an ordinary young man who has been hurt and longs to be loved. The two come to understand and develop feelings for each other.
⚠️ Plot spoilers! ⚠️
At this point, Wei Jie’s true identity is revealed: he is in fact the Ancient Flame Emperor who failed his tribulation. He deliberately chose Cui Xiaoxiao and sent her into the mistaken world to take his place in becoming a demon, so that he could return to his divine status. However, during his time spent with Cui Xiaoxiao, Wei Jie has already been influenced and has regained his human innocence and sincerity.
In the end, the two resolve their emotional barriers, join hands to confront the mastermind behind the plot against Wei Jie, and fight to protect all living beings.
The master once said that for someone with Cui Xiaoxiao’s “Ten Injuries” fate, she was actually quite lucky. If she had been born two hundred years earlier, with her pure yin destiny [yin constitution and fate], she would have become the nemesis of the demonic sect master Wei Jie. In that case, the clueless Xiaoxiao would have been hunted to the ends of the earth, her bones ground to dust and ashes…
Xiaoxiao secretly broke into a cold sweat: Wei Jie was naturally dark and ruthless, cruel in temperament. Fortunately, two hundred years ago, he had already been killed by his disciple Qin Lingxiao, who endured hardships and bided his time. There was no longer such a demon in the world – only his infamous reputation that would stink for ten thousand years.
Later, Cui Xiaoxiao accidentally traveled back two hundred years into the past, and even took in a handsome, unruly young man as her disciple.
Cui Xiaoxiao was greatly relieved, and silently prayed to her master’s spirit in heaven: Our Ling Mountain Talisman Sect has finally begun to flourish! I will definitely nurture my disciple properly!
After finishing her prayer, she turned to look at her tall and strikingly handsome disciple, smiling as she asked, “Disciple, I forgot to ask just now – what is your surname?”
The disciple looked at his master’s bright, sparkling eyes and slowly replied, “My surname is Wei. My name is Wei Jie…”
Short introduction:A wrong timeline, meeting the right person…
Female lead:A miserable life where sheaccidentally took the ancestor of the demonic lord as her disciple, and ended up leading him onto the path of becoming a demon lord.
Male lead:A blissful life where heaccidentally became a disciple of a cute master, and receives her affectionate smiles every day.

Kinda scared of what this episode will bring. Hehe, from yesterday and how it ended, clearly the fluff is over. I hope the casualty counter stops at just 2.
My monitor stopped working so I am using just my laptop for everything right now, and It's frustratingggg.
So I need the episode to go easy on me, lmao.
Just some reminders for those who are just joining us:
We are following the Netflix and YOUKU SVIP schedule till further notice. ❤️
Please no negative comments about the actors and actresses, but we can be angry at characters; that's fine. I get angry at characters all the time, so this is a safe space. 😊
Please remember to use spoiler tags when discussing any episodes beyond this post, or I cannot be held responsible when Wei Rao decides to slap you or asks you to slap yourself.👍🏽
Episode 21:
Owning an estate is hard work sister.
While the scholars argue about how to proceed with the guy who has been captured, the arrogant scholar, whose name I know I should remember because he keeps showing up, suggests questioning the maids, and so they do. I think Wei Rao notices Gejin is acting weird.
General Qi shows up saying that an intruder broke into the estate to steal valuables, but Chilan caught him, so the intruder murdered her.
After she dismisses the scholars and maids, Gen Qi tells her there is something they need to see at night.
Later that evening:
Wei Rao and the boys discover hidden copper coins.
Turns out the guy they caught yesterday is actually a servant of the Han family, and when the estate changed hands, the Hans did not have enough time to move all their wealth.
He was ordered to stay in the estate to guard the remaining wealth.
He murdered Chilan because he was afraid she had discovered the secret.
Chilan was not his only victim; he murdered a father and son as well.
They investigate further and find chests filled with Gold. Gen Qi says Wei Rao should keep it and feed her people on the estate. Lu Zhuo suggests thinking clearly and coming up with a clever plan because Han Liao will not let this gold go.
Wei Rao and The Boys.😂😂
So Gejin is also part of the Han family servants.
She tries to run away but is caught by Han Liao and his men. (How did he heal so fast damnit)
They look like two besties, lmao.
The emperor sits there watching his sons; the other 3 are clearly enjoying the act and laughing, while Prince Duan sits with a serious look on his face as if planning something.
They are attacked by assassins.
Lady Zheng protects the emperor along with Prince Duan. 🙄
The empress is protected by the guards.
Gen Qi and the Palace Guards manage to defeat the assassins. (These were not that strong because this was planned; my heart feels it.)
Turns out it was a test for the princes.
A fight that still happens in every household, even in modern times...How parents treat their youngest compared to their eldest children.
Lady Zheng says that she will help Wei Rao and Lady Li make amends.
At the banquet, Lady Li gives Wei Rao and Shu some pendants.
They give Lady Zheng her spying maid as a gift.😂
Lady Zheng had been planting Talismans in the palace, trying to get Lady Li framed for practicing witchcraft; she had Wei Shu give Rao'er a talisman to make it look like Wei Rao was the one behind it all.
Lady Zheng and Lady Li decide to join forces.
Updated Table - For Now.
Some changes here and there.
Gejin continues reporting to Han Liao in hopes of becoming his concubine.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Schemers, too cozy, I think they forgot about the divorce lmao.
At court, Han Liao frames Lady Wu'an and accuses her of abusing Gejin.
Smug Han Liao is mad at Wei Rao for rejecting him.
After all the planning Han Liao and Gejin did, they still failed.
Gejin switches up on Han Liao and starts begging Wei Rao for mercy; Wei Rao brings up Chilan's death.
The Empress and her son plan their future.
Prince Jing plans to spread a sickness over at Wei Rao's estate.
Over at court, the Hans are exposed by our divorced lovebirds, and while that happens, Prince Jing comes running in to tell the emperor about the Cranes and the good omen they bring when spotted, and these cranes somehow flew outside the Empress's palace only.
The Emperor concludes that the Hans were planning all of this to make Prince Jing, the crown prince, so he strips them of their robes and titles.
And the Empress is to be detained in her palace.
Casualties: 4
Thoughts:
Firstly, I didn't reply to many comments yesterday; I was tired, so I spent all day sleeping, but I read everything when I woke up this morning.💛💛
I don't trust the Feng Sheng Scholar; I like the arrogant one more. I don't think he could be bribed to betray Lady Wu'an.
LOVED when our scheming couple started scheming about the copper and what else could be hidden there, and Gen Qi was so lost...She is not made for you, brother!
I'm so happy Lady Li gave Aman to Zhuyu to help Wei Rao.
I can't prove it, but Lady Zheng and her family planned whatever happened at that event.😂
Okay, it was a test from the Emperor...and Lady Zheng was clued up on it, so she did plan to protect the Emperor; she wouldn't have if it was real. 😂🙂
Mother, Son, and Daughter are playing around with the Zheng family. 😂😂
Wei Shu is not a bad person; she is in a very bad place right now, being hit by her husband...so anything she does would be out of desperation.
I know Han Liao is annoying afffff; I want to hit him every time I see him, but he is a stubborn cockroach, and I love it when he loses every time.
The plan to get rid of the Hans while getting punishments for the Empress and Prince Jing was flawless. Our scheming couple is 👍🏼

The drama tells the story of judicial and law enforcement authorities combating organized crime and the corrupt forces protecting it amid the normalization of anti-gang and anti-crime campaigns. Set against cold, bleak streets, the story portrays the struggle between justice and the forces lurking in the shadows.
Synopsis (originally from Tencent):
Evidence begins in 2008. Han Yongqiang, the driver of Li Xuedong – the director of the Chengyang Economic Development Zone Administrative Committee – sees his fate take a dramatic turn after forming a “family” with Li’s mistress.
⚠️ Plot spoilers! ⚠️
Navigating the dangerous edge between power and organized crime, he endures oppression and bloodshed, transforming from a mere pawn into a player. He ultimately drives Li Xuedong to his death and rises step by step into a crime boss, building a network bound by blood ties and shared interests.
By 2018, a suspicious falling death case involving his daughter, Han Shanshan, exposes the staggering extent of his influence – manipulating public opinion, interfering with the judiciary, and turning black into white – pushing his crimes to their peak.
Yet justice is never absent. Led by criminal police officer Gao Yuan, the anti-organized crime task force presses on through layers of obstruction and protection from powerful backers. Despite repeated setbacks – “three investigations, three denials,” the deaths of witnesses, and the destruction of evidence – they remain unwavering.
In the end, relying on next-generation forensic techniques and an unshakable commitment to the truth, they uncover key figures and decisive physical evidence, ultimately shattering Han Yongqiang’s seemingly impenetrable empire.

I'm up to episode 12 of tigers sniff the rose on Tencent Video, and i finally understand why i keep having to rewind certain scenes to remember who's connected to whom. yan shang, mu wanyao and the grand princess all have such different positions in this mess. the grand princess has the power to have yan shang away and try to control the situation, while mu wanyao is willing to enter her residence herself to get him back. that contrast says a lot about all three of them. what i find interesting is that the tension isn't just about romance. it's also about power, loyalty and how far people are willing to go for someone they care about. even a seemingly small decision can change the whole dynamic. honestly, this is the kind of historical drama that gets more interesting when you start figuring out who's really on whose side. you don't need to memorize every character right away, but once the connections start clicking, there's a lot more to pay attention to. i ended up making a little character relationship chart to keep track of everyone, so i'm sharing it here in case anyone else is following along and getting a bit lost too. no major spoilers, just trying to make sense of this very complicated cast
OMG, so funny to see Dr Liu, Ai Chen and Zhou Zheng working as extras (World War Two Chinese soldiers) and also so sweet of our Dr Liu to rescue Ai Chen from being embarrassed by the PD for being illiterate.
And poor Zhou Zheng has glioma, a form of brain tumour. No wonder he live life in such a careless and carefree manner. But I was sobbing when he removed his pink wig and to see him kneeling on the floor to beg Dr Liu to respect his choice of not telling his mother about his sickness…
Zhou Zheng was really a good influence on Dr Liu as his words that family and friends are the best cure for pain were the magic words that inspired the latter to return to Dongbei and Little West Heaven. That and the words of his deceased mother.
LOL. The new and ‘improved’ Dr Liu scared and shocked the shit out of everybody. Loved his brother’s reactions whom said that he was going to called the police and the secret smile he has when he left for work.
Of course, bad luck follows our Dr Liu. First day back at Little West Heaven and he is held hostage and injured by an escaped prisoner but he held true to his medical ethics and operated on said prisoner who was shot by the police. But it was so hilarious to see Dr Liu tried to save his life by saying to the prisoner that he is a good doctor while showing the banner of thanks he received from Jiao Jiao’s family.
