PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Update Would I be wrong for putting my cat down? (Toby Update)

Yesterday October 27 we euthanized him. We did it at home. The vet bills of consultations were adding up but the chemotherapy bill was one I could not pay. We gave him some extra weeks so we could spend time with him. He lost a lot of weight. Constantly scratching his tumor until it was bleeding a lot. Bed ridden. I waited until my mom came to New York and then we did it.

Me and my mom came to the conclusion that the reason his cancer may have been so aggressive is because of the FIV virus that he had. When we got bloodwork done after the tumor appeared this was made evident by the doctor. Don’t know when he could have gotten it. He was born from a stray. Once we got him as a kitten he was 95% an indoor cat. But he would occasionally sneak out. Last year he ran outside and got into a fight with another stray right in front of me. Don’t know if that’s when he got the virus or not. Thank you guys for all your support on the previous post. ❤️

Kitten Help Me and my partner saved a stray kitten from the cold, what do we do now?

Post image
• Upvotes

Me and my partner live in the US in a small rented house. The past few nights we've had this kitten crying outside our house. Finally, last night, we caught it. We felt obligated to catch it because it's so small, it's past freezing at night and getting colder, and there are coyotes in the area. There's a bigger stray around which may or may not be the mother, we're unsure, but this kitten is always alone.

Now we've got him locked in the bathroom (we already have an adult cat) and he seems ok but clearly very frightened of people. He's got kitten food, a litter box, and water. We are going to try contacting vets soon to get him checked for stuff. Anything we're missing? Is there something else we should be doing or anything we've done wrong so far? He seems quite healthy, but definitely anxious. What's best practices wrt informing the neighborhood in case it belongs to someone?

TLDR new kitten from nowhere what do

Behavioral Issue Is this normal for introductions?

We are at week 6 since bringing the white kitten, Ciri, home. She is female and not yet spayed. Mabel the black cat is 1yr and spayed.

We did scent swapping and the hissing stopped, we did site swapping and the hissing stopped, then we moved to door feeding and they kept their distance but still ate, even with the door open.

Now, they are getting closer to each other, but interactions like this are happening. Ciri is very interested and playful, but Mabel is a lot more guarded. However, she spends a lot of time sitting outside of Ciri’s room and waits for the door to open.

I am worried this is a step back and is harmful to their relationship but also don’t want to interrupt healthy boundary setting!

On a side note: We have feliway diffusers and play with them both separately. Mabel is very affectionate towards me since Ciri joined. Posting from the UK. Vet is accessible and I am not a minor.

Update Update on adopting older cat peeing outside of box

Thumbnail gallery
87 Upvotes

original post

The urinalysis came back normal so the shelter gave us some options, one being we do a two week foster-to-adopt trial. We ended up doing that and am happy to say that after just one week into that trial I signed the adoption contract.

He’s just a little (very large) baby! We all absolutely love him. Turns out he is a high pee-er. (Elevator butt??) He absolutely goes in his box no question, he just doesn’t squat very well and it’ll sometimes shoot over the edge. Yes, I have two boxes with high sides but he is pretty big. I’m looking into doing the large tote with an opening cut out on the side.

Anyhoo. Off to live happily ever after with Groot.

Update You Called Him “Sad Kitty”..Now He’s Inside, but His Behavior Change Has Me Worried 📍Charlotte,NC,USA

Does anyone else find Thor’s change in behavior a little concerning? Also, do his eyes look a little unusual to you? His vet appointment is this Friday, and I’ll bring up both concerns.

About a month ago, I posted here about a change in Thor’s behavior. He wasn’t running away from me anymore. Instead, he would sit on my porch, looking inside at my cats and meowing. You all named him “Sad Kitty.” When I asked what I should do, so many of you encouraged me to bring him inside..and I did. 🧡

He is a completely different cat from the one I knew three years ago. Back then, I trapped him and kept him indoors for four months, but he barely left his cat tree, even when we weren’t home. He never seemed comfortable, so I eventually set him up outside with food and shelter and continued caring for him.

This time, he is incredibly affectionate and clingy. He follows me everywhere, weaving between my feet so closely that I can barely walk. When I hold him, he plays with my hair like a little kitten. He’s so gentle, and while I love seeing this side of him, such a big change makes me wonder if something else could be going on.

When we first trapped him three years ago, he tested negative for FIV. We tested him again after bringing him inside this time, and he is now FIV-positive. I don’t know when or how he contracted it.

I’m currently caring for several sick cats, and the rescue I volunteer with is also struggling with FIP cases. With so many cats and limited funds, I couldn’t arrange his full checkup immediately. He looks a little overweight, isn’t very active, and has some missing teeth. Honestly, I’m worried about how we’ll manage if he needs more treatment, but Friday’s visit will help us understand what he needs.

Thanks to everyone’s encouragement, Thor is now inside..and I have more than fourteen cats under my roof!My hands are full, but this sweet boy clearly has so much love to give.

Once he’s been checked and cleared by the vet, I hope he’ll be available for adoption together with his best friend, whom I trapped about a week ago. They deserve a loving home together.

I just wanted to share a few pictures of our boy and thank everyone who encouraged me to bring him in. Your “Sad Kitty” has turned into my little shadow. 🧡

End Of Life Care How do I get through something like this

Post image
177 Upvotes

this is my cat Lenny, he is 12. I’ve had for the past five years, ever since I adopted him after he was a stray. recently we noticed him having trouble breathing and sneezing very often so we decided to get this checked up and he has a nasal carcinoma. this is uncureable and since then, his breathing has only gotten worse with it being labored and him breathing with his mouth open. Because of this, we will have to put him down soon most likely tomorrow. I can’t even fathom how I’m supposed to get through this and spend enough time with him before he has to go. I love him so much and I don’t know how I’m gonna handle myself.

Kitten Help What should I do with them?

What should I do with them?

I work at a car workshop, and this stray cat that wanders around seems to have given birth among some of our inventory

They're peeing and pooping on new car parts so they definitely can't stay there

I see two paths with their various pros and cons

Path 1:

Put the cats in a box near where I found them and wait for the mom to come take them

Pros: they get back to their mom

Cons: people in my country do NOT like cats and the stray isn't the kind of stray you pet, it's the kind of stray you see but once you get close it runs off and vanishes

They will be stray cats in a country with no love for stray cats

Path 2:

Some workers live at the workshop and like cats and want to take care of them

Pros: they get care and get to live calmer, easier lives

Possible office cats? 🥹

Cons: maybe the mom will be heartbroken? There might also be some mistakes along the way, like someone feeding them regular milk (I read youre not meant to do that? Never owned a cat). Though one of these coworkers owns cats

I know I sound very biased to one of these paths lol, but still, any advice? Suggestions? Secret third paths? Thanks in advance!

Poster Age: 22

Country: Nigeria

Vet info: eg: there are vets, not sure if they can be afforded

Main Issue: TLDR should I look after stray kittens or leave them to the elements

Cat Age: unknown

Cat Sex -t neuter info: haven't checked genders, not spayed or neutered

Financial situation: I don't think I could personally afford vet care

My coworkers, not sure; they don't make alot but I wouldn't say they're in poverty? But I also dont know their side hustles or outside financial obligations

Behavioral Issue Rehome or Farm?

Post image
• Upvotes

I am debating if I should list our cat up for re-homing or bring him to a friends farm. My friend has a farm with sheds and barns with cats that are peacefully living there, and she leaves dry food out for them so they have something to fall back on if the mice run dry. The farm is about 2.5 hrs away from me in North Dakota, USA.

For context the cat is six years old, neutered, and we've had him since he was a kitten. We also have a senior cat in the house, and they've never gotten along. They were in different homes for about two years, but now we all live together again. The feuding between the two has only gotten worse with time. These days, he essentially stalks the senior cat (female) like prey throughout our apartment, and attacks her if he's left unwatched. And I mean really attack her, I have to pull him off of her and it's scary. Because of this, we have to keep them physically separated all of the time. This is leading to a very stressful home life for all of us. I'm considering bringing him to that farm because it's clear he wants to hunt, has his claws, and loves to run around. I feel like it's not right to keep him locked up in a bedroom most of the day since they have to be separated. I know all of this isn't a clear indication that he could survive on a farm, but I don't know if any household will want a cat that has shown aggression towards other pets (and sometimes humans).

I truly care about that cat, but he is making our home life incredibly hard. We can’t leave for a trip because how can we explain that the cats need to be kept separate to a cat sitter, and make them understand that it could be a life/death situation if they don’t? And forget about having guests or family over. At this point I think I need to do something about this issue.

General Advice Rehoming Two Cats, Help:

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

I have a beautiful soul cat for seven years that lives with me, I can't mentally or financially take care of any more cats indoor, but lately two of the most adorable and friendly cats started following me and are now living at my yard.
One has a clipped year the other doesn't. They are so amazing and they desperately try to get inside my home every time I open the door.
The black one seems older at around 7 or 10 maybe and to be struggling with some cough or so, the yellow one seems perfect and I would say around 3 years old maybe. I plan on trying to take them both to a vet to spay one of them and check on both health state (especially worm wise, feline aids and the cough as well, etc).
I am really struggling with shelters though and winter is coming and this is really scaring me, winter here in Pennsylvania can be harsh and with the black one age and cough it really frightens me.
I am looking for any advice on how to proceed and cheaper ways that I can check them on a vet and spay one of them, I also would love avoiding clipping the yellow ear and leaving them on shelters. I would want to try to ""foster"" them in the yard until someone wanted to adopt them. I feed them, give them fresh water everyday, pet them a lot and I am looking in buying a heated house for them. Any suggestions on more cheap reliable options for this outdoor heated house would be amazing.
Thank you so much for any tips or advice. Please be respectful!

Adding because the post says I need to: I am not a minor, I am from USA PA, I am still looking for an affordable vet option.

General Advice 6 year-old cat diagnosed with megacolon vomiting for months.

Thumbnail gallery
29 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I don't really know if this is the right place to post this, and I apologize if I mess something up, but I'm honestly desperate at this point and could really use some advice. This is my 6-year-old spayed kitty, Arla, and I just want to figure out how to help her. We live in NTX.

Back in May, we took her to the vet for a regular check-up and were told she needed to lose about 3 pounds. I blame myself so much for what happened after that. I picked the first cat weight management food I saw, which was Royal Canin, and since then we've been dealing with months of vomiting, usually 1–2 times a week. We've taken her to the vet 3 times for X-rays, and she's since been diagnosed with megacolon (although I've heard that can be misdiagnosed).

What's so confusing is that she's otherwise a completely normal, happy cat. She now weighs 10 pounds. She eats and drinks well, poops multiple times a day, and doesn't ever go more than a day without pooping. She doesn't eat too quickly either. We've been told she doesn't have an obstruction, so I just don't understand why she keeps throwing up.

We've switched her diet away from the weight care kibble to mostly wet food (Friskies Shreds - I know it's not the best, but it's budget friendly and she hates pâté), which she gets 68g of 3 times a day, 5 hours apart. I add water to every meal, and she gets between 6–8g of RC Fiber Response kibble once in the morning while we're asleep. She also gets 1/2 tsp of MiraLAX daily as recommended by the vet, and the vet also had us try Lactulose for 2 weeks.

Despite all of this, she's still vomiting about every 5–6 days. Sometimes it's a small pile of mostly digested kibble, and other times it's just liquid by itself, not foamy or anything. I feel like I'm trying everything I can, but nothing is making it stop, and I honestly don't know what to do anymore.

Our vet hasn't suggested enemas or Cisapride, just Lactulose and monitoring her. I'm wondering if anyone else's cat with megacolon has dealt with this kind of vomiting, especially when they're still pooping regularly. Has anything helped your cat? Diet changes, different medications, anything at all? I plan to take her for a second opinion at a different vet, and to rule out CKD or any other issues, but outside of that I feel so lost.

I'm on SSI, and I'm really scared that she needs something that will cost thousands of dollars that I just don't have. I feel so helpless because I want to do everything I can for her, but money is a huge limitation.

Please don't judge me. I love this sweet girl more than anything, and I already feel so guilty about her situation. I'm not looking for blame; I'm just looking for advice from people who understand what it's like to deal with this or have been through something similar. I just want my girl to feel better.

Photos attached of Arla, and her X-rays from September.

General Advice kitty got into lilies!!

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

UPDATE: ER vet called this morning and said he is doing very well. He had his baseline kidney panel done this morning and it was normal. They will repeat tonight. As long as that stays normal, it sounds like they may be ok with taking home. I am calling my vet this morning to get advice from them as well.

My poor Mr. Wilbur got into some lilies tonight. 😭
Thankfully I caught it almost immediately, wiped him down with a soapy rag, and rushed him to the ER vet. They induced vomiting and said it didn’t look like he’d actually eaten any, but they’re still concerned about exposure to the pollen. After a complete meltdown over the cost, we decided to leave him overnight for 24 hours of IV fluids and preventative care. The cost isn’t going to absolutely wreck us, but it’s definitely not something we were prepared to take on. We’ve already agreed to $3k for the first 24 hours, but the ER vet is recommending a full 48 hours, which would bring us to about $4.5k. 🤮 I am sooo torn. Obviously I want to do everything I can for him, but another $1,500 is so much money. Has anyone been through this? Would you do the first 24 hours and reassess based on his bloodwork and what the vet says, or just suck it up and pay for the full 48 hours?

P.s. Please be kind I’m already a wreck over this and just trying to figure out what’s best for my little guy 😭💔
