Community Feedback Needed: What Should Brand Engagement Look Like on r/BuyCanadian?

Hi everyone!

We're looking for some community feedback on how we approach brand and vendor engagement on r/BuyCanadian moving forward.

We receive multiple modmails every day from Canadian brands, business owners, and vendors asking for permission to post about their products or services outside of our existing self-promotion megathread.

We understand why. Our megathread doesn't receive much attention, and given that the purpose of this subreddit is to encourage Canadians to purchase Canadian products from Canadian businesses, we don't want to create unnecessary obstacles for those businesses.

At the same time, r/BuyCanadian is a valuable resource for many people, and we want to be mindful of maintaining that value. The last thing we want is for the subreddit to become an advertising board where genuine recommendations, questions, and discussions are drowned out by promotional content.

With that in mind, we'd love your thoughts on a few things.

1. Brand and Vendor Posts

What would you like brand engagement to look like on r/BuyCanadian?

Would you be comfortable with Canadian businesses making posts about their own products or services? Would you find that helpful, or would you rather promotional content remain separate from regular community discussions?

A few ideas we've considered:

  • Designated promotional days: Allow brands to make their own posts on one designated day per week, or potentially more frequently depending on community interest.
  • Posting limits: Restrict the frequency of promotional posts, whether that's a maximum number per week or another reasonable limit.
  • Participation requirements: Require brands to contribute meaningfully to the community beyond advertising. This could include participating in discussions, answering questions, or following Reddit's old guideline that self-promotion should account for less than 10% of an account's activity.
  • A combination of the above: Allow promotional posts provided brands meet certain participation requirements and adhere to posting limits.

These are just ideas, not proposed rule changes. We'd like to know what you think would be reasonable and what you would find useful.

Are there any particular types of products, services, or businesses you'd rather not see promoted here?

For example, a significant portion of the requests we receive are for apps, websites, subscription platforms, and other digital services. We receive so many of these requests that we could practically start another subreddit dedicated to them.

Digital services are just an example but if there are any categories of businesses, products, or services that you feel aren't particularly relevant or useful to this community please let us know below.

2. Ask Me Anything (AMAs)

We recently hosted an AMA with Manmade, following requests from community members. Manmade's CEO has been an active participant in our subreddit for some time, and members expressed interest in having him host an AMA.

Manmade was more than happy to be our guinea pig, and from our perspective, the AMA was largely successful! There were plenty of great questions and thoughtful answers, and we think it provided a valuable opportunity for members to engage directly with a Canadian business.

Our moderation team is interested in hosting more AMAs, but we'd like to know whether the community shares that interest.

A few questions:

  • Would you like to see more AMAs?
  • Are there any particular brands or individuals you'd like us to invite? We're open to more than just businesses. This could include Canadian public figures, politicians advocating for Canadian businesses and products, industry experts, or anyone else whose experience or work is relevant to the community.
  • What should qualify someone for an AMA? For businesses, should we prioritize recognition, success, uniqueness, or something else? What would make an individual an interesting guest?
  • How frequently would you like to see these events?

Given the volume of businesses interested in engaging with our community, we would need to establish some basic eligibility criteria. We can't realistically host an AMA every day, nor do we think that would be particularly beneficial.

If there's sufficient interest, our team would be happy to reach out to brands or individuals recommended by the community. We'd also put together an AMA etiquette wiki outlining expectations for participants and an AMA directory to make previous discussions easy to find.

3. What Happens Next?

For now, we're just gathering feedback. No decisions have been made, and we're not announcing any changes to our existing rules.

If there's substantial support for expanding brand engagement, we'll take the suggestions from this discussion and put together a community poll to help determine what that should look like.

Our existing Canadian brand directory and self-promotion megathread will remain available regardless of the outcome.

Ultimately, we want to strike a balance between giving Canadian businesses an opportunity to connect with potential customers and preserving what makes this subreddit useful in the first place.

We're open to suggestions beyond those outlined above, including ideas we may not have considered.

Thanks, everyone! We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Questions โ“๐Ÿค” Where Can I Buy Books?

โ€ข Upvotes

Where can I buy books online from a Canadian business thatโ€™s not Indigo? Iโ€™ve seen Book Outlet and a few places like that mentioned but they donโ€™t have great selections. Iโ€™m in the GTA if that matters.

Questions โ“๐Ÿค” CBC shows on Gem or Netflix

I'm seeing a lot of Canadian shows coming to Netflix that are also on CBC Gem, and I'm wondering which is better for the CBC for me to watch it on. I guess I'm thinking mainly of the CBC originals, but any insight into other shows is cool.

Does CBC get royalties, or charges or nothing, when Netflix plays one of their shows? I assume there are also server costs, minimal as they may be, when I play something on CBC Gem.

I understand that โ€œhome goods and essentialsโ€ may not make sense, but Iโ€™m looking for options of paint pens/paint, so that I can decorate my front screen door for each holiday๐Ÿ’•

The photo shows one example from T.T. and I think she used posca pens? Iโ€™m looking for the best/cheapest option to order, very obviously looking for Canadian options! And if you have any experience using any of them or tips on how to design things, I would love to hear!

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿ Sectional Couch suggestions

Hello! I am in the market for a new sectional couch and would like to buy Canadian. I am in Alberta, and live rural-ish without a truck, so delivery needs to be an option and I likely will not have an opportunity to view in person. I would specifically like something with some more eccentric colour options (beige and brown just isn't it for me, personally). I am not rich, but I am willing to splurge for actual quality. Anyone have any suggestions?

Looking For: Hobbies & Lifestyle ๐ŸŽฎโšฝ Christmas Gifts for Tweens Made in Canada

I'm looking for Christmas gift ideas for my tween daughter, and hoping to source as much as possible from Canadian makers and manufacturers this year. I find this age so hard to buy for - she's too old for 'toys' but still wants 'stuff' (we also include experience gifts and consumables like chocolate). She's into STEM activities, art & crafts, nature, and books but I'm open to anything others have found their tween kids are into.

Canadian-Owned Businesses ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ Blondie Apparel Sample Sale

Blondie Apparel is having their annual online sample/warehouse sale. They primarily make women's casual clothing, but also have a unisex crewneck sweatshirt. Not only are their products made in Canada (Toronto) but their fabric is knit in Canada as well. I have... ahem.... quite a collection of their items and they hold up well over time. They are based in Eastern Ontario and women owned. I'm not at all affiliated with the brand, I'm just a huge fan and wanted to share about the sale.

https://blondieapparel.com/

A few recommendations:

The Ridge Pants are my go to sweats and I have two pair I have on heavy rotation.

The Cottage Sweater (in fleece or terry) is my pick for ultimate coziness. I'm not brave enough to wear it out in public, but it serves the place of a robe or cozy layer when lounging at home. Bonus: if you work from home and your boss sends an early morning video call request, it just looks like a hoodie from the top half!

For out and about, I've been rotating the Forest Hoodie (sale colours or new colours) and Mountain (fleece, regular)/Mountaineer Sweaters, which feel current but classic.

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care ๐Ÿ‘•๐Ÿ’„๐Ÿ‘œ๐Ÿ Looking for solid perfume

On another web forum I frequent (which is 80% Americans, the rest of us from Canada and Europe), someone was asking for solid perfume recs but all the responses were US companies. Is there any Canadian company making solid perfumes? I would love to throw some money at them.

This is my first post in this sub. My husband recommended you fine folks when I fell down a rabbit hole of American perfume companies that sounded cool but I don't want to buy from the US obv. (I did check out the pinned post for extant Canadian businesses who do sell perfume, but's all spray or rollers. Which is great but I would like to try solid perfume.)

Looking For: Services & Shops ๐Ÿ›’๐Ÿ’ป Looking for Canadian owned fabric wholesale stores

Hi everyone,

Iโ€™m planning to start a small business selling my quilting products locally. Until now Iโ€™ve only made one-off projects for friends and family, so Iโ€™ve been buying fabric at local shops in Ottawa and sometimes from Spoonflower.

Iโ€™m now looking for a more economical supplier which restocks fabric designs, ideally one with a good range of printed quilting cottons.

Do you have any favourites youโ€™d recommend?
Thanks so much in advance!

My daughter and I love colouring together. Since we can't get Laurentian Pencils anymore, is there a good alternative? Crayola and Staedtler are terrible. Looking for a Canadian brand, or European as a second choice. They need to be creamy and pigmented. Thanks!

Canadian-Owned Businesses ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ Canadian Hardwood Flooring Options

When purchasing hardwood flooring, please consider Made in Canada flooring from Canadian mill factories and encourage friends and family to do the same. New tariffs are directly impacting hardwood flooring producers right now. Here are some brands I personally know, feel free to add ones you know are also manufactured in Canada:

We have Vintage hardwood flooring installed, both the look and quality are excellent.

Canadian-Owned Businesses ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ Kayak fishing accessories?

Wondering about Canadian kayak fishing accessories. Thinking something along the lines of a Navarre Kayak Fishing or Yak Attack.

Just curious if thereโ€™s a company Iโ€™ve missed making stuff at home. Thanks.
