Discussion The election is over. Here is how we stay engaged - starting with signing the petition for an independent Auditor General.

The election is over, and the result is what it is: the same mayor, the same council, four more years. But the city does not belong to council. It belongs to the people who live here, and the next four years will be shaped by who shows up. Voting is one day. The rest is the everyday work - the meetings, the budgets, the decisions about streets, parks, transit, and taxes - and that work is open to residents.

Start with information. Anyone can file a freedom of information request for city records - contracts, expenses, emails - and appeal a refusal to Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner. Sunlight is the first step to everything else, and it is a right, not a request.

Then there are the watchdogs. If a councillor breaks the Code of Conduct, anyone can complain to the city's Integrity Commissioner, who can recommend a reprimand or up to 90 days without pay, on the public record. If council closes a meeting that should have been open, anyone can ask for an investigation in writing through the City Clerk. There is a confidential hotline for fraud and waste tips, and residents can ask the Audit Committee for a value-for-money audit of a program or contract.

There is one more thing worth knowing about those watchdogs: most of them report to the very people they oversee. The Integrity Commissioner is appointed by council, reports to council, and council decides the penalty. The closed-meeting investigator is appointed by council too. The city's internal auditors report to the Audit Committee, a committee of councillors. That is why the single biggest upgrade is an independent Auditor General - an officer who reports to council and the public, and publishes value-for-money audits anyone can read. The Ontario Ombudsman recommended one in 2017 - Toronto, Ottawa, Markham and Sudbury already had one, and Peel Region created one this past July. There is already a petition calling on Brampton council to appoint one before the end of this year, and signing it is one concrete thing any resident can do right now:

https://www.change.org/p/appoint-an-independent-auditor-general-for-brampton/fbog/521807366

One tool has real teeth, and a deadline to match. If a councillor votes on something they have a financial interest in, any voter can ask a judge to rule on it under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act - within six weeks of learning about it - and the penalties can include losing the seat.

But the part that matters most, day to day, is simpler: show up. Speak at council and committee meetings, including budget debates. File 311 requests. Email your councillor. Bring an idea - a safer intersection, a better park - and put it on the record where it has to be answered. None of this depends on who you voted for. The election was one day. The next four years are ours to shape.

Discussion How did Patrick brown win?

Please explain as I don’t understand this at all! Despite large scale corruption, having done nothing much to the city , ready to ditch Brampton in a heartbeat if he is offered the plum roles at the provincial or federal level. Yes I see there should have been a credible candidate contesting against him and Wesley Jackson did make some noise but it was too little too late. Why can’t we have a leader who works for the city?? I see he polled around 80k votes so in a city of 800k+ people only 120k to 130k voted . So was the issue low voter turnout!!

Looks cool (like the beaver), it may have been a competition, but I felt that they deserved some recognition on the sticker itself.

Question Extracurricular for Autistic kids.

Are there any extracurricular activities for Autistic kids in Brampton that are done after school? around 6-7? I realize the city has their regular programs and i can ask for a 1:1 support person but realistically he's not interested in dance, or sports. and if he could be interested in maybe sports the class sizes might be overwhelming. Are there any arts? building? anything with smaller classes made for children with disabilities at a time parents are able to make it and not during the day?

Maybe i haven't looked hard enough but i haven't found anything and it really makes me wonder why kids with disabilities don't have as much options.

i have looked into some places but there is a wait list or again times are during hours that i have to work in order to provide for my family and his private SLP and OT and other therapies.

Question At this point the question has to become why such a low turnout for the election?

I did see signs and campaigners, but 4/5 people stayed home.

We can't cut a cake equally when most people don't even show up.

Happening Now International student and landlord experience

This is so wild. I can’t believe this is happening. My landlord has just locked me out of the house and states I am owing 11days worth of rent.

Backstory:

Moved in Sept 1, no proper bed provided, toilet wasn’t the cleanest, already paid two months rent upfront. She said she gave a makeshift bed and promised to order a proper one later in the week

The week after, she says it’s too expensive. I’m like I didn’t demand a particular brand of bed, I just need something decent. If you cannot meet the basic provisions of the tenancy then I want out. I have my notice officially on Day 10. She claims it’s not 2 months notice. To which I reply, you didn’t meet the provision of the contract. I sent her a message to say I am entitled to compensation for medical costs of body ache, lack of privacy since renting a room in your house and inadequate furnishings but happy to drop the case if you waive the demand for extra rent (10days, now she is claiming 11days that’s by the way). No reply.

I am due to move out 30th Oct. today she changes the lock code on the door and I am locked out in the cold. I think I am gonna call the police.

Discussion Today is election day. The government closest to your life is on the ballot. Polls close at 8pm - go vote!

Most of us follow provincial and federal politics more closely. The leaders are more prominent, the stages are bigger, and the headlines are louder. That makes sense - until you think about what actually shapes your day.

The roads you drive on. The parks your kids play in. The community programs, the libraries, the snow cleared in winter, the police and fire services in your neighbourhood. The schools your kids attend. So much of it is decided here, by your mayor and city council, and so much of it is paid for by your property taxes.

That is why good governance matters more at this level than anywhere else. Good government is not complicated: decisions made in the open, money spent where residents can see it, and true value for every tax dollar. Transparency is how you know you are actually getting what you pay for.

Here is the part worth sitting with. Your day-to-day life is affected far more by the municipal leaders who run the city you live in than by anyone in Ottawa or at Queen's Park. Not by a little - by a higher order of magnitude. The pothole, the bus, the park, the tax bill: all of it is local.

So today is not a small election. It is your say in how your tax dollars get used, and your chance to vote for leaders who actually align with your interests.

Make sure you vote today. Polls close at 8 p.m. - find your ward location at brampton.ca/voters.

Crime 1 intersection, 34 double sided campaign signs

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

Edit: sorry, it is 34 signs total, installed in 17 pairs.

Williams Parkway and Rutherford Rd North.

There are legitimately 17 double sided zip tied campaign signs at just this one intersection.

There are literally 34 signs just here!

And they are all for a single candidate. 3 guesses who.

There is also a single snow removal sign, unrelated.

There are a lot of bad signs out today but this is a systematic pattern of abuse across the whole city that is an entire order of magnitude beyond everyone else combined.

Every major road, especially off highway interchanges near residential areas.

You have got to be kidding me.

Crime Brown has no respect for Brampton bylaws

I just drove half way across the city and counted maybe 40 Patrick Brown signs on city property.

One intersection on Williams with maybe 5 large signs on a single corner, outside of the sound wall.

This is blatant disregard for the rules he's supposed to represent. If he cannot follow existing bylaws even, how can you continue to trust him to represent this city. He has no integrity. Photo-bomb Brown must go.

Anyone who comes on to say it's volunteers, I will not hear it. They are trained, and if they are not, that is still his fault. Every sing violation is his direct responsibility.

He is not the only one, there are a few other offenders, I see a lot of Taran signs as well, but his are by far the most numerous and visible.

CALL 311. Or use the app if you aren't driving. File a bylaw complaint for junk signs, get a case number. Every sign that is recorded by bylaw enforcement will get counted against them.

And show up to council when they vote to waive the fees to avoid being held accountable. Accountability is the only answer, regardless of who wins or loses.

Black HONDA CRV newer model with baby on board sticker throwing garbage out illegally behind dollarama in the bins for businesses. Guy was Indian with a lady in the front. Saw me staring as they dumped illegally in the bins that are not for them to use. Reason I post this is because you can’t use them, and he had litter fall on the ground and willingly kicked it and gave me a thumbs up. This is so sad, and I am South Asian born here. This is why people hate Brampton and South asians - he was cocky while littering, almost proud he did it……

Do people not realize they can leave their garage on the curb? Lol

City Hall Brampton voters: here’s my full ballot for today (Oct 26) after a couple months of talking to candidates and voters

Voting day is here. Over the campaign I’ve talked with a lot of the candidates and met plenty of potential voters at the door and around the city. Here’s how I’d vote, ward by ward.

If you’re still undecided or just want to see what someone who’s been out there is thinking, this might help.

Full disclosure: I’m running for Regional Councillor in Wards 9 & 10, and my wife Karen Dancy is running for Catholic school trustee (Wards 7-10). I’ve listed us below because we’re on my ballot, but weigh that however you choose. My picks for every other race are based on those conversations.

Mayor: Wesley Jackson

Wards 1 & 5

  • City: Tracy Pepe
  • Regional: Steven Lee
  • Public school trustee: David Green
  • Catholic trustee (Wards 1, 3, 4): Amanda Baez

Wards 2 & 6

  • City: Navjit Kaur Brar
  • Regional: Julie Luckasavitch
  • Public school trustee: still undecided
  • Catholic trustee (Wards 2, 5, 6): Dominique Darmanin-Sturgeon

Wards 3 & 4

  • City: Jugraj Singh Khinda
  • Regional: Manmeet Singh Choudhary
  • Public school trustee: still undecided
  • Catholic trustee (Wards 1, 3, 4): Amanda Baez

Wards 7 & 8

  • City: Ayanna Kahlon
  • Regional: Cynthia Sri Pragash
  • Public school trustee: Michael Gyovai
  • Catholic trustee (Wards 7-10): Karen Dancy

Wards 9 & 10

  • City: Janice Gordon-Daniels
  • Regional: Michael Dancy (if not me, Gurpreet Singh Dhillon)
  • Public school trustee: Daljit Singh
  • Catholic trustee (Wards 7-10): Karen Dancy

A few notes on how I decided. Candidates who made time to sit down and talk, even for 20 minutes, counted for a lot with me. In a couple of races, candidates declined or cancelled interview requests, and I figure if it’s difficult to fit a short conversation during a campaign, it may be hard once they’re in office. That’s just my experience, so make up your own mind.

Candidate names are per the City of Brampton’s certified list. Please check your own ward and school board before you vote, since the trustee boundaries are confusing. And whoever you pick, just get out and vote.

Happening Now IT'S ELECTION DAY

Polls open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.

Residents have a choice to make . . . do you want "more of the same" from City Hall? Or, do you want something different/better from your elected officials?

In most races across the City there is no longer the excuse of "better the devil you know" as a large number of very credible opponents have made the decision that "enough's enough".

My choice has been clear since the campaign started, and remains the same despite some last minute smear tactics and fear mongering from the incumbent.

But it is YOUR choice. Make the best one you can.
