[2020] “We’re seeing a much improved version of Whyte, albeit against the faded Alexander Povetkin here, he’s showing a lot of improvements, at least from his point of view.” “He is, he is. Smart boxing.” “OHHHH! Left uppercut puts Dillian Whyte out!”

I mean they weren't wrong he was looking comfortable. He never worked out his trouble with uppercuts, funny as fuck to watch though

Whyte and uppercuts, name a more iconic combo.

Never forget that Whyte claimed the ref should've given him a count lol.
Reminds me of when Lennox got laid out by Rahman and claimed it was stopped prematurely.

u/aceknighthigh 14h ago
Forget count, Whyte claimed he wasn't out, heard a count, and was getting up.
https://www.boxingscene.com/articles/whyte-i-got-dropped-i-sparko-i-got-up-straight
"I just remember falling and the referee saying 'six, seven.' And then after, tried to get up, and the referee was saying 'nah, nah, nah, it's a heavy knockdown'.. blah, blah, blah. I was alright, I wasn't like sparko, sparko. I can't say like 'Oh I didn't get dropped.' It was a great shot to the point of the chin, and I got dropped. But I was all right. I got up straight after, I was cool," Whyte told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat. "
Dude fabricated a whole count and claimed he got up straight after.....in reality he was atill being helped to even stay seated while they administered oxygen. This was a couple weeks after the KO too.

I can't say I didn't get dropped 🤣🤣🤣
Time to award the understatement of the millennium.

Povetkin punched any memory of the incident out of Whyte, and he replaced it with a more palatable version.

"Gimme the count after i get my oxygen for 2 minutes"
Whyte is one of biggest overacheivers , hes really not good at all but hes got heart. that one fanboy on here was saying Whyte would be a force back in the day
hed be a journeyman at best getting KOed left n right

u/thewizard404 13h ago
Whyte has always had garbage footwork and movement which was his biggest weakness. In his prime he had a good counter left hook and power but not much else. And every time he got popped for drugs he looked like complete shit the fight after lol

He was boxing well. It was unlucky how it ended but he was looking very good. In the rematch he basically just boxed the same and won.
Its just one of the things about boxing and HW boxing in general. You can do everything fight and still get knocked out.

Agreed that Whyte was looking good in this fight and Povetkin was having minimal success prior to the KO. The commentary sounds funny because of what happened next but it was pretty accurate, Pov had been down a couple of times the prior round IIRC.
One thing I would point out is that Pov did seem to be setting this up through the previous rounds. He was definitely looking to land an uppercut utilising a similar sequence. An absolute peach of a shot. One of the best uppercut KOs I can think of.

I'm not so sure I'd describe having my glaring defensive weakness exposed as unlucky. Give the man his credit.

Curse of the commentator. He was looking great to be honest.
But that shot would've KO'd anyone in the heavyweight division, it's just perfect.
Povetkin was super underrated his whole career.

If the Klitschko's never fought he'd likely have held the lineal championship for a short while at least.

He made a crazy move gunning for Wlad. Pov easily coulda been a legit world champ if he went All Russian route and fought Valuev or Chagev or Ibragimov when they were champs. Coulda beaten Wilder too if that shitshow didn't occur.

Most other boxers don't get hit by it probably

u/Prior-Temperature-22 15h ago
It was a pretty good set up from a high level albeit old Olympic gold medalist

u/ratboy343 15h ago
I more meant that Dillian never learnt to defend this shot, he's been KO'd cold pretty much this exact way 3+ times

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 15h ago
Its easy to look good against a shot fighter
-1
u/LTBsOnlyPlease 15h ago
I thought Whyte was shot now, so he was shot 6 years ago too? Damn LOL.

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 14h ago
I meant Povetkin

u/Agreeable-Escape-826 13h ago
In the rematch after having Covid he was like Bambi on ice. It was the weirdest thing.

Dillian Whyte was in really good form before this since losing to Joshua nearly 5 years prior, having beaten Joseph Parker, and Chisora twice.
Plus this was a Povetkin a month before turning 41. I can only imagine what a prime Povetkin would’ve done to Whyte.

as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, and that'll be a home run.

Dillian never saw an uppercut he didn't want to throw his jaw in front of.

u/BoxingFan88 13h ago
Worst and most biased commentary in history
They didn't mention anything povetkin landed until it was over

u/Excellent-Oil-4442 9h ago
Povetkin got dropped twice and lost pretty much every round up to that point. That really was the sharpest Chisora looked and that shot ended his prime

B/c Povetkin didn't do much in this fight. He got knockdown twice the round prior. That uppercut was the only thing of substance he landed in the entire fight.

Reminds me of this classic call from Julian Jackson vs Herol Graham: https://youtu.be/6gqs6MiGdQk

I will never forget the image of Povetkin walking out Eddie Hearn’s garden.

This was the end of Prime Whyte. Before this, he was on a nice run and on the fringes of a world title shot.

I remember NASA launching a space probe to get Whytes head back out of orbit immediately after that shot.

u/Awezome321 8h ago
Dillian Whyte is such an uppercut eater,
Like i've read from somewhere before that he's open to uppercuts because of his kickboxing background?
how true is that?

Downvote away, but fighters like Whyte are the modern-day equivalent of fighters like Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers and Gerry Cooney. Never at elite level, but always entertaining regardless. Social media and the hive mind mentality just hadn’t made sporting fans fickle back then.

was hilarious. absolutely statued him.
whyte beat a covid stricken povetkin in the rematch, if i remember.

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 15h ago
This is gonna happen to Dubois too

u/Adz442 15h ago
Dubois is a far far better fighter than Whyte ever was.

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 15h ago
He is but I'm still not buying into this "new and improved/more confident" story people are peddling. Not again lol

No. Whyte has always been an overrated bum.
2
u/disgruntledarmadillo 15h ago
Chisora has fought every man and his dog but only two men have sparked him out.
The king Dillian got it done 😤
1
u/stephen27898 14h ago
No. He was a good contender and a fantastic addition to the HW division. He got some good results, put on some very good performances and scored some very impressive KOs.

u/Carmageddon-2049 4h ago
Similar upper cut plus a shove that put him down against fury as well.
Joshua nailed him with an upper cut as well.
Dillian defence was pretty poor against upper cuts

Coveting could still bang right up until the end. The steroids helped but...
