Announcement Announcement: Bot Bouncer installed in r/Bonsai

If you're someone who regularly interacts with this sub, you may notice comments that sound very generic. Sometimes they read as plausible or even pleasant at face value and you may not think twice about it. However in many cases, these comments are left by LLM bots... not real humans.

Bot Bouncer is an app that helps combat this problem. The benefit is that bots identified by Bot Bouncer are banned from all other subs which also have Bot Bouncer installed. For example- if a bot is identified and banned from r/travel (a sub also using Bot Bouncer), then that same bot is automatically unable to comment in any other sub with Bot Bouncer installed, including r/Bonsai. Eventually those profiles are banned from reddit entirely.

If you spot a bot, please report it! In addition to the AI-sounding/ChatGPT nature of these bot comments, they also never seem to comment in the same subreddit more than once or even twice. So if you see an eclectic AI-sounding comment history with no repeating subreddit comments, there's a pretty good chance it's a bot. Here's some recent confirmed bot sample comments to help give you an idea of the patterns to look for.

We have had Bot Bouncer deployed for a few months as a test period with positive results. Some bots are becoming more complex and difficult to detect, but this is at least a good starting point. It doesn't seem like any human's been caught in the crossfire here just yet. If you do, then reach out to r/BotBouncer to appeal. You can also get in touch with us through Mod Mail if you receive a false positive bot ID ban.

Let us know if y'all have any questions or concerns!

[Bonsai Beginner's weekly thread - 2026 week 43]

Welcome to the weekly beginner’s thread. This thread is used to capture all beginner questions (and answers) in one place. We start a new thread every week on Friday late or Saturday morning (CET), depending on when we get around to it. We have a multiple year archive of prior posts here… Here are the guidelines for the kinds of questions that belong in the beginner's thread vs. individual posts to the main sub.

Rules:

  • POST A PHOTO if it’s advice regarding a specific tree/plant. See the PHOTO section below on HOW to do this.
  • TELL US WHERE YOU LIVE - better yet, fill in your flair.
  • READ THE WIKI! – over 75% of questions asked are directly covered in the wiki itself. Read the WIKI AGAIN while you’re at it.
  • Read past beginner’s threads – they are a goldmine of information.
  • Any beginner’s topic may be started on any bonsai-related subject.
  • Answers shall be civil or be deleted
  • There is always a chance your question doesn’t get answered – try again next week…
  • Racism of any kind is not tolerated either here or anywhere else in /r/bonsai

Photos

  • Post an image using the new (as of Q4 2022) image upload facility which is available both on the website and in the Reddit app and the Boost app.
  • Post your photo via a photo hosting website like imgur, flickr or even your onedrive or googledrive and provide a link here.
  • Photos may also be posted to /r/bonsaiphotos as new LINK (either paste your photo or choose it and upload it). Then click your photo, right click copy the link and post the link here.
    • If you want to post multiple photos as a set that only appears be possible using a mobile app

Finally

  • Beware of AI responses to bonsai related questions - they are often based on unreliable and sometimes downright incorrect sources.
  • Beginners’ threads started as new topics outside of this thread are typically locked or deleted, at the discretion of the Mods.

Show and Tell Root over rock Japanese maple progress

Thumbnail

I grew this maple from a seed I had bought online at the beginning of my journey. About a year or two ago I decided I wanted to remove it from the small pot I was keeping it in to grow radial roots in and transplant it into a forest pot with some seiryu and other stones I had for what I'd hoped would turn into a root over rock/ landscape type planting. Originally it had a ton of spagnum and dirt covering the trees roots. I have slowly removed it, via watering and actually picking at it.

I hope you all like my progress so far. I am still a novice so it's not perfect. Hope you all are doing well.

Discussion Question PLEASE HELP injury to old friend

While I was away a drunk person fell on my almost 20 years old crataegus. The roots were damaged and the leader was snapped. I'm sorry this is a wordy post but my emotions are getting the better of me. I'll appreciate all forms of advice or sources of information.

It was wrenched from the soil so that it was lying completely flat in the pot. Someone lifted it back up and staked it while I was away. The roots appear somewhat intact but I haven't probed too deep.

The leader was snapped and seems approximately 50% girdled. It's a little wobbly but the remaining wood seems strong enough to support itself.
Roughly 50% of the foliage is growing from above the break.

l've tried to provide a 360 degree view of the break.
There is an open fracture with some splinters poking out and a section of cambium which has peeled and died.

I'm asking for advice regarding procedures, materials and timelines needed to give the leader the best chance at repair. I will probably avoid touching the roots however any advice is welcome.

Would you remove the splintered wood where it pokes out of the wound? Would you cut the peeled cambium back as in bark tracing? Which sealant, if any would you apply and where? Would any wrappings such as raffia be appropriate? We're going into autumn here, how does this affect its chances? Is any pruning recommended?

I've had this tree since childhood but it was neglected in a shady spot under a tree. I recently started taking bonsai more seriously and lifted it from the ground this spring. It lost a lot of roots but recovered in a greenhouse and put out good roots and extensions through summer. It's in a homemade mix of molar, zeolite, crushed leca, shredded bark and sphagnum.

Visited the Longwood Garden with some friends this weekend, and to my surprise they had a wonderful little courtyard with an attached workshop demonstrating some tanuki techniques with pre bloom chrysanthemums, later on we stumbled across some that were actually trained and had already bloomed.

I would highly recommend this place to anywhere around or visiting the area!

Discussion Question Doing bonsai based in fictonal trees

might be slight off topic, and unpopular, and maybe against the vbonsai concepts, but why not ask.

With the help of AI, I did a list of some trees from some IPs I like and try to think of trees that could be trained to become similar/inspired bonsais.

would like to hear from the community about:

  • If they agree with the type of tree or have another suggestion
  • Another suggestion of famous trees that are not in the list
  • If someone tried something similar
  • What do you think about the idea
Fictional Tree Origin Intellectual Property Botanical Analog (Scientific & Common Name) Botanical Classification Bonsai Viability & Morphological Rationale
Yggdrasil, the World Tree Norse Mythology (Eddas) Fraxinus chinensis (Chinese Ash) Broadleaf Deciduous High: Excellent leaf reduction under defoliation cycles, strong basal flaring (nebari), and deeply fissured mature bark evoke the cosmic world-supporting ash.
The Coordinate Tree / The Paths Attack on Titan Stewartia pseudocamellia (Japanese Stewartia) Broadleaf Deciduous Moderate to High: Smooth, exfoliating bone-pale bark and refined broom-style ramification mirror the luminous, crystalline canopy of the Paths.
The World Spiral Tree Berserk Juniperus chinensis 'Shimpaku' (Shimpaku Juniper) Coniferous (Evergreen) High: Pliant vascular cambium permits extreme torsional bending (nejikan), while durable heartwood accepts structural deadwood work (shari).
The Two Trees of Valinor The Silmarillion Ginkgo biloba (Laurelin) & Olea europaea var. sylvestris (Telperion) Deciduous Gymnosperm & Broadleaf Evergreen High: Ginkgo produces brilliant golden fan foliage, while wild olive develops silver leaf undersides and bleached deadwood, functioning well in twin-trunk (sokan) designs.
The Great Tree of Mana Mana Series Rhododendron indicum (Satsuki Azalea) Broadleaf Evergreen High: Readily develops thick basal tapers and dense dome canopies, tolerating the heavy pruning needed to mimic the sacred blooming canopy.
The Tree of Iifa Final Fantasy IX Taxus cuspidata (Japanese Yew) Coniferous (Evergreen) High: Extremely rot-resistant heartwood tolerates deep hollowing (sabamiki), and dark live veins reflect the necrotic, soul-filtering trunk.
Purifying Forest of the Fukai Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Taxodium distichum (Bald Cypress) Deciduous Conifer High: Develops fluted, hollow buttresses and aerial root knees (pneumatophores) in water trays, resembling calcified subterranean columns.
Sunlight Tree Eve One Piece Ficus microcarpa 'Tiger Bark' (Tiger Bark Fig) Broadleaf Evergreen / Tropical High: Produces prolific vertical aerial roots under high humidity, forming columnar pillar roots that suggest deep vertical descent.
The World Tree Hunter x Hunter Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese Cedar / Sugi) Coniferous (Evergreen) Moderate: Classic candidate for formal upright (chokkan) styling; fibrous reddish bark and strong apical dominance emulate a skyward column.
Giant Jack One Piece (Skypiea) Wisteria floribunda (Japanese Wisteria) Deciduous Woody Liana Moderate to High: Natural clockwise trunk twining allows multiple stems to be braided and fused into a muscular, rope-like skyward vine.
Treasure Tree Adam One Piece Quercus robur (English Oak) Broadleaf Deciduous Moderate: Rugged, blocky bark and stout, horizontal branch retention communicate the dense, war-enduring hardwood of legendary naval lumber.
The Yarukiman Mangroves One Piece (Sabaody) Ficus benghalensis (Indian Banyan) Broadleaf Evergreen / Tropical High: Drops extensive aerial roots that fuse into broad, stilt-rooted colonnades, capturing the resin-bearing mangrove islands.
The Whale Tree of Zou One Piece Olea europaea (European Olive) Broadleaf Evergreen High: Naturally develops swollen, asymmetrical burls and basal hollows (uro) that can be carved into zoomorphic, cetacean silhouettes.
The Tree of Knowledge One Piece (Ohara) Zelkova serrata (Japanese Zelkova) Broadleaf Deciduous High: Archetypal broom style (hokidachi) produces an umbrella-like dome canopy with fine ramification, mimicking the 5,000-year-old library tree.
The Giant Tree of Laputa Castle in the Sky Ficus microcarpa 'Green Island' Broadleaf Evergreen / Tropical High: Flexible roots readily clasp stone, brick, or sculpted ceramic blocks, enabling Root-over-Rock (sekijoju) designs that swallow architectural ruins.
The Cleyra Settlement Tree Final Fantasy IX Conocarpus erectus (Buttonwood) Broadleaf Evergreen / Tropical High: Exceptional natural driftwood qualities and twisting live veins create a weather-beaten, hollowed desert refuge.
Exdeath / Tree of Moore Final Fantasy V Ulmus parvifolia 'Corticosa' (Cork Bark Elm) Broadleaf Deciduous High: Deeply fissured, corky bark plates and vigorous back-budding create an ancient, rough texture suited to an evil arboreal warlock.
The Guardian Tree Final Fantasy V Carpinus betulus (European Hornbeam) Broadleaf Deciduous High: Smooth, fluted, sinewy trunk lines and orderly branch ramification convey a sacred, balanced presence over the Earth Crystal.
Fiona’s Forest / Desert Tree Chrono Trigger Vachellia tortilis (Umbrella Thorn Acacia) Broadleaf Deciduous / Subtropical Moderate: Fine bipinnate foliage and a naturally flat-topped horizontal canopy reflect the restored savanna tree cultivated by Robo.
Tombs of the Star Sacred Tree Jujutsu Kaisen Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig) Broadleaf Evergreen / Tropical High: Massive spreading buttress roots and dense adventitious anchoring recreate the subterranean root barrier chamber beneath Tokyo Jujutsu High.
The Great Deku Tree The Legend of Zelda Quercus suber (Cork Oak) Broadleaf Evergreen High: Thick, deeply ridged cork layers permit carving hollow features (sabamiki) into the bark without damaging the living cambium.
The Whispering Hillock The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Taxodium distichum (Bald Cypress - Flat Top) Deciduous Conifer High: Readily forms basal hollows, bulbous fluting, and dark, shaggy bark in wet trays, capturing the swamp-dwelling spirit in Crookback Bog.
The Mallorn of Lothlórien The Lord of the Rings Fagus crenata (Japanese White Beech) Broadleaf Deciduous High: Smooth silver bark, refined horizontal canopy pads, and luminous golden autumn foliage match Galadriel’s royal elven trees.
The Sacred Tree of Ages InuYasha Cryptomeria japonica (Japanese Cedar / Sugi) Coniferous (Evergreen) Moderate: As Japan's traditional sacred shrine tree (Goshinboku), its stringy reddish bark and upright habit reflect the historical setting.
The White Tree of Gondor The Lord of the Rings Stewartia pseudocamellia (Japanese Stewartia) Broadleaf Deciduous High: Alabaster exfoliating bark and five-petaled white summer blossoms match the royal, pure-white heraldic lineage of Minas Tirith.
The Whomping Willow Harry Potter Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa' (Corkscrew Willow) Broadleaf Deciduous Challenging: Twisted, contorted branches capture aggressive, thrashing movement, though it requires constant water submersion to prevent dieback.

I last posted this medium sized JBP about 10 months ago at the time of the winter needle thinning.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bonsai/s/6fRiK9pQOE

It has grown very strongly over the year since, I will have to thin it even more aggressively this winter.

This tree is about 20 years from landscape nursery stock, has been in a bonsai pot for about 5-6 years.

I've included a pic from about 5 years ago.

I don’t quite like the top half of this tree. My plan A is to chop it back to below the first branch, there is a small bud that I can build a new tree from. However, figured that I should try and see if I can make something I like from it. I’m going for some literati style. It’s a prunus (padus) and has nice white flowers in clusters and small black berries.

Discussion Question Juniper

Thinking this juniper has too much foliage for the size of the trunk—it’s looking bushy. Considering taking off most of the top foliage, leaving the lower foliage so the apex is much lower and closer to the front of the pot.

Museum/Professional Nursery Visit Mr. Kim update(central florida nursery)

I stopped by Bonsai Master in Apopka fl. to help Mr.Kim pull out a hand full of good material to take photos and help him start a labeling process with dog tags I made him.

Reddit saved the day and has helped get his address updated, for that he is extremely grateful. However me posting his number online may have set him up to receive an endless amount of spam calls so please text him, his number is on the previous post(I don't want to post it again if its contributing to more and more spam calls)

These photos are some examples of trees he has for sale, I have a lot more photos upon request. If it takes me a little while to respond please keep in mind I have a very demanding career and a young family and I am doing my best.

I also have a little better understanding on his prices of his bigger bonsai Quince and some of his other stuff, although those would have to be a local pickup.

My intention is to help him get back on his feet and bring his motivation up as his pride and joy (previous farm and home) was stripped from him and I can tell he is exhausted by the physical and mental stress of the whole situation. He thrives on sharing his work with others and he hasn't had anyone besides me come around since the move 6ish months ago.

If the local community can come together to help me out on this one, I am slightly over extended here. I will continue to help out the best that I can however my work is going to pick back up again and I don't want to leave him hanging and lose the momentum this has gained. I wouldn't be doing this if he didn't deserve it.
