First time blacksmithing

Post image

This was my first time blacksmithing. I took a Damascus chef’s knife class and I am ridiculously proud of how it turned out. And now I can’t stop thinking about hot metal, hammers and what classes I want to take next. And apparently I may have found my new obsession 😂
If anyone has any recommendations on what classes to take please let me know. I want to learn as much as possible.

Welcome to the obsession. Glad you were able to start with classes. I've been at it off and on for like 8 years now, and haven't had the opportunity to take a class, all pretty mucb YouTube University for me, lol.

Honestly, teaching yourself for eight years is impressive as hell! YouTube University or not..you still had to put in all the time, work and trial and error. That takes some serious dedication!

One of the best classes you can take is actually something where you make blacksmith tools. Something like tongs, chisels, hammers etc. Because not only does it teach you vaulable skills you much need later on down the line, but also then you have a tool you can immediately use to further create.

Depending on where you are located you can find a shop nearby that can teach you all that.

Besides taking classes (which really rapidly speed up your learning process) I do recommend to start your own forge and start making mistakes. Loads of those. Because mistakes really help you a lot to understand why certain techniques exist and thay in some instances its good to learn certain ways of forging.

You have found and delved into an absolutely beautiful craft. Keep at it, it is a beautiful journey. If you have any further questions feel free to hit me up with a DM.

Your knife looks stunning by the way! Very well done! cheers mate

Yes exactly, making your own hammer is such a power move, definitely the best next step.

Looks amazing. How much was the class? Can you give us more details on how long it took and maybe the location?

Yup! Sounds like you've got the bug!

Hey what's the difference between Blacksmithing, and Crack Cocaine? - You CAN quit Crack Cocaine!

Seriously though, that is a very sweet looking chef's knife, especially for a beginer's work! You absolutely deserve to be proud, and I hope you'll share many projects with us in the future!
