just a timely reminder that the FOMC is just noise

• Upvotes

if you hold bitcoin and believe that this meeting has a meaningful impact on it long term, you’re wrong

if you trade bitcoin this meeting may impact its price in the short term, but holding bitcoin short term is ill advised

make no mistake, bitcoin was designed to endure whatever mayhem the central bankers may wrought in the coming years or decades

the bankers are trapped between rising inflation, outright apocalyptic sovereign debt levels and burgeoning civil unrest

the Federal Reserve is cooked

the EUCB is even more cooked (look into the EUCB-France situation)

Bitcoin is decidedly not cooked

choose wisely

Pay with Bitcoin without converting to fiat first?

• Upvotes

Is there a simple way to pay with Bitcoin for everyday stuff without having to manually sell it or transfer it to an exchange first? I'm talking about normal purchases like coffee, groceries, shopping, etc.

Most places still don't accept BTC directly so I'm curious what people are using to get around that.

Are there any solutions that let you pay straight from your Bitcoin wallet or does everything still involve converting to fiat somewhere in the process?

Is there an easier way I'm not aware of?

Not financial advice, just coffee and lower lows .

Question about sending to someone

Hi. Since the Ledger issues if late, I saw a post that said if you send someone bitcoin from your cold wallet, the wallet could become vulnerable. I have only stacked to this point and never sold any but the time has come that I must sell a bit. It seems straightforward but I don’t want to make any big errors. Will my cold wallet be at risk?

It should be noted that I cannot move it to an exchange. It would have to move from wallet to wallet.

Charles Stross wrote the first work of fiction to mention bitcoin...and then removed it.

Post image

I read a post that said that Charles Stross's Neptune's Brood was the first work of fiction to mention bitcoin. This is confirmed in a 2015 version of the Wikipedia page about bitcoin where it says:

In science fiction novelNeptune's Brood by Charles Stross a modification of bitcoin is used as the universal interstellar payment system. The functioning of the system is a major plot element of the book.

There is also a post on the economics blog, Overcoming Bias, that provides actual quotes where Stross mentions bitcoin in the book.

Slow money is a medium of exchange designed to outlast the rise and fall of civilizations. It is the currency of world-builders, running on an engine of debt that can only be repaid by the formation of new interstellar colonies, passing the liability ever onward into the deep future. … By design the slow money system is permanently balanced on the edge of a liquidity crisis, for every exchange between two beacons must be cryptographically signed by a third party bank in another star system: it take years to settle a transaction. It’s theft-proof too – for each bitcoin is cryptographically signed by the mind of its owner. … Suppose I wish to hire you – in another star system – to loan me a copy of your soul as indentured labor for a decade or two. …

So, you can imagine my excitement when, after a longer than expected wait, this book arrived in the mail and I read it.

First off, I'll say that it's a pretty great read and I highly recommend it. I've read one other book by Stross (Accelerando) and Neptune's Brood is full of the same weird twists and turns of futuristic thinking.

But...my copy doesn't have any bitcoin in it. (see picture)

I have the 2014 Ace mass market edition and every instance of the word bitcoin has been replaced with "cryptocoin" (or in one instance "cryptocurrency").

I've read that Stross is not exactly a fan of bitcoin, but the best explanation I can find is this comment of his from a Hacker News thread:

  1. Neptune's Brood is more heavily based on David Graeber's work on Debt (notably Debt: The First 5000 years).

1a. If you feel inclined to read Neptune's Brood, I've got one big regret: I wrote it circa 2010-11, before BitCoin really took off in the public eye, and used the term "bitcoin" for a not-like-our-BtC-honest cryptocurrency. (If I'd known BtC was going to take off that way the year the book came out, I'd have come up with a different name.)

  1. Paul Krugman is a cool person to go drinking with in a pub :)

I guess he asked his publishers to make the change for the mass market edition (the 2013 Kindle edition may be the only one that actually has the word "bitcoin" -- although I don't know about the 2013 hardcover).

What happened to Cedric Dahl? He seemed to have completely dropped off the radar quite a few years ago. He was one my favourite early bitcoin YouTubers. Last time I heard from him I think he was on the Peter mccormac what bitcoin did podcast..... That was years ago.

Anyone know what happened to him and why he dropped off the radar?

I replayed a BTC-backed loan on every day since 2014. Even at 20% LTV, some got liquidated

Many of us have looked at borrowing against our coins instead of selling. The offers show the interest rate. I wanted to know something they don’t show: how often a loan like that would actually have been liquidated.

So I replayed one on real hourly BTC prices (USD), starting a new loan on every day since 1 Jan 2014.

The loan: 12 months, 50% starting LTV, margin call at 70% with 48 hours to top up, liquidation at 80%.

Results

  • 41 of 100 start days ended with the coins sold by the lender.
  • At 20% starting LTV, 4 of 100 one-year loans were still liquidated. No LTV I tested survived every start day.
  • 56 of 100 margin calls came at night or on a weekend (Central European Time).
  • Raising the liquidation LTV from 80% to 90%, or getting 72 hours to top up instead of 48, changed almost nothing. A lower starting LTV and a shorter loan made the real difference.

Caveat: start days close together share the same crashes (2018, 2022...). So there are fewer independent events behind these counts than the numbers suggest.

Why I’m posting

I built a free tool from this, because I wanted to check offers myself: bitcoinloancheck.com

You enter the terms of an offer. It shows the chance of a liquidation before the loan ends, the liquidation price, and what the loan costs compared with selling. Full tables are on the Insights page.

To be upfront about what it is:

  • It’s my own project. I don’t work for a lender, and none is named, ranked or paid on the site. No referral links, no ads.
  • No account, no cookies, no tracking. It runs in your browser and your numbers never leave it.
  • Open source (MIT): github.com/boddenlennart/btc-loan-risk
  • It shows what happened in the past, not what will happen, and it isn’t advice.

I’d honestly like to receive your feedback. If something looks off, or a loan term you’ve seen can’t be entered, tell me in the comments.
