Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

Found a tiny creator rolling around on the counter in my bathroom I was able to use my magnifier to take a close-up picture. This looks like a book lice to me? But it would be great to get a second opinion.

Identification What is this bug?

I found this bug crawling in clean laundry (hot water hot dryer) but had been sitting on the couch all night. when I squished it it left this mark. any ideas? I’ve had a couple of bites but they’re infrequent and look more allergy type.

Hotel bedbugs

So I'm staying at a Wyndham hotel and

my husband was eaten by bed bugs. We originally thought it was mosquitos because we hiked but kept waking up to bites. So after a week of not understanding what is going on, it finally clicked, bed bugs. We moved from the room, laundered, took pictures of his bites, i got the room number. Went to the front desk, and they said they put the room offline. It's been a week and a half since I've heard anything. But they were switching over management when i first complained, so maybe it got lost. So i went to the (new) manager after a few days for an update like last week. They investigate it, and then they call if they find anything. Nothing. I am staying here still, but my last day here is soon.

Should I just push it to corporate?

This may be a long post so sorry ahead of time. I personally have never had bed bugs but I can identify them partly from working in the home health field and partly just being terrified of them to the point that I've tirelessly studied everything I could find out about them. To the point I'm here for I moved in with my 20 year old daughter a little over a month ago when I first moved in she told me she thought she had bb so we searched high and low and only found a couple of dead ones stuck to some tape around a window in her room we went ahead and tripped her whole room washed dried all the curtains the whole 9. Since then I have searched the rest of the house multiple times and found nothing. Well about 30 minutes ago she came into my room freaking out because she woke up with one on her. So we went through her room again and found several live ones in her curtains by her bed. Once again searched my room the living room everywhere I thought to search and have found nothing. So is it possible to only have bb in one room in the house or is that just wishful thinking on my part??

Bed Bug Issue!

Hi all, I am from UK. I live on the top floor of a terraced house flat. Its rare i leave the house and have lived here for 10 years and have started getting bed bugs.. My friend went to london on train and came back on an hour long uber and then a week later we started getting bites appearing. checked bedding and mattress and bed.......zero signs at first...so we put it down to mosquitos untill the bites started forming in clusterss of 30-60 bites. After a few more days of checking...one was under the matress spotted. Instantly purchased Repelem sprays which was a mistake, once i used that in the bedroom they then started appearing on both sofa's and desk chair. Now 4 weeks later i have been turning the place upside down and clearing out as much stuff as possible. I have sealed 2 sofa's which a biohazard team is removing. They do offer treatment however my situation is more annoying because my living room also possesses around 20-30k worth of studio equipment set up which i cannot move anywhere and i use it at all times. It's possible i saw an egg on one of my midi keyboards but im not 100% sure. I have no way to treat this place it seems because i cant move all this stuff into any room that has been treated because it will re contaminate it and i have no ability to even take it all out of the house. some of it is high risk even moving the stuff as dropping one thing can cause 10,000 pounds worth of damage in 1 go but full room heat treaments will probably damage all my stuff too. Not really sure how to approach this. I have sealed tons of smaller belongings that are easy to move about. I have even purchased Cimexa powder now which just arrived and same with MGK crossfire which ill attempt to use once i get a lot of stuff cleared out but Diy attempts even with high quality goods might still make it all useless, been looking at those dry steam generators too which would be helpful but i am not sure if uk plugsockts are safe for such things? Maybe if i was to use crossfire and cimexa and the steam thing all in combination and have the cimexa powder have perimeters around my equipment or something so that anything lingering on it will walk out into instant death. i do use isoproyl aswel which is obviously dangerous so i am careful where i spray that. Anyway this seems like something that may take me months to sort out and i am not sure where to start. Any advise will be greatly appreciated

Or are we infested for sure?

Found one crawling (thursday)after these bites appeared (wednesday) killed it and it was the typical rust colour.

It is now tuesday. No other bites and no signs of infestation. Interceptors on bed and encasement installed.

Husband stayed at a hotel. Hotel confirmed no bed bugs but i think it hitched a ride home with him from somewhere.

Few signs

My wife and I have been noticing some insect bites—a few in clusters but mostly isolated—that are very itchy. One of them, on my foot, has turned into a fluid-filled blister about 5 mm in size (probably because I scratched)
I made the bed, removed the mattress cover, and inspected every corner of the mattress, the bed frame, and the baseboards, but found no signs of insects (except for a silverfish). We suspected the sofa, but I flipped it over and didn’t find a single spot.
Is it possible they’re that hard to find?
I recently traveled to Copenhagen, but the problem seems to have started at least 10 days later…

Should I invest in a professional service? Or should I just hope they’re mosquitoes (there are still some around—it’s not cold enough yet)?

Should I buy monitor traps to check if they catch something? Do they work?

Thanks a lot

EDIT: tried crossposting but failed, this post is in bedbugsadvice but automoderator says this is the right place

EDIT2: I won’t post bites marks, but I cannot avoid to say the word “bites”

I found bed bugs, what do I do?

So I’ve never had this issue ever. Two days ago in the afternoon I noticed such a small bug it was like the size of a small seed and I squished it and didn’t think anything of it but then tonight I saw another one and squished it and it left a little dot of blood behind. So I freaked out and asked Google and it said it could be bed bugs. So I literally tore my room apart. When I took all my bed sheets off I saw no trace of anything and then when I got to my final sheet a bigger one came out. I killed that one and bagged it but now I am freaking out. There is no sign of them on the bottom of my mattress or anywhere and I checked my bed frame and saw nothing. I live in an apartment complex, is it possible they are traveling from a neighbor? I literally don’t know what to do I’m on the couch now and I know I’m not supposed to but I don’t think I can bring myself to sleep in my own room right now. I genuinely don’t know what to do.

What to do first

Stayed in a hotel for a few nights. Been home two days. Woke up this morning and there was a bedbug on my bed. Blood inside my tshirt.

I have stripped all the beds and found nothing else. Im very paranoid so I check our mattresses regularly im certain we've brought it back from the hotel.

What are the best steps to take to ensure this doesnt become an infestation? I will be getting sprayed today but what else should I do. This is my worst fear

It was about 2 1/2 mm long. I had to edit the photo a bit because it was very blurry. This is the best I can do but is this what I think it is? It was hanging out on my bed cushion. Thank you in advance.

Had some scare of seeing some black spots on our bed at a hotel, moved rooms and still found some. Nothing crazy and checking the matress couldn't find anything. Decided to still risk it. Unfortunately a bit later saw this bug on our bed.

Just praying it's not what I think it is

I live in North Carolina. Found a single bug in my bathroom but I’m unsure if it’s a bedbug or not. Afterwards I flipped every mattress and couch in the house. Dressers included. Saw no evidence.

Ok, this is going to be a long one and is my first time posting on here. (long time lurker though) I moved into my new unit in March and within about a month, in April I had my first BB sighting. I knew it was a bed bug because I’ve had fear of them before so I knew what they looked like. Long story short, contacted my property manager, she said she was surprised and allowed me to have it treated right away through my own pest control company/cost because I was freaked out and would’ve had to wait if she did it herself. I see maybe one or two more, a few dead ones, then nothing. For MONTHS.

All of a sudden, August comes around and I see a LIVE bed bug in my living room while my friend is over. I called the pest control company back freaking out, he said that it likely was a re introduction from someone (which made no sense to me, I didn’t have any issues for the longest time and that friend hadn’t been around till that day). Regardless he came back to treat free of charge. This time when I loop my property manager in, the new management company gets pissed and says they have to treat it after the treatment my company did. I said okay, because I knew two chemical treatments are usually required.

Anyway, they arranged it, though after three or so treatments I was still seeing bugs. Finally, she sent them for a final inspection and “touch ups” (basically 4 treatments at this point all chemical). Following that, she scheduled one last inspection to be safe. Now, I won’t lie, I wasn’t home for the eternity of all these treatments. I had trips booked, I stayed at my bfs here and there (but was very safe and careful with my heat treated items only, checked his place frequently as well). Now the “final” inspection happened about a week ago. Before I even got the results of that, I saw 2 or 3 more live bugs. The crazy thing is, they are NEVER in my bedroom. I have the interceptors and encasement, and I only ever see them in the living room and kitchen. So I mention this to my property manager and she comes over to my unit to speak with me again. She says that they’ve made a new discovery, and that someone on my “line” (an 08 unit, i am 1608) has a pretty substantial infestation that they didn’t know about till now. This was relieving but not really because she said their inspection said there was no activity in my unit.., yet I am continuously seeing bugs. Her solution for right now was for me to tape off my vents as my unit is for the most part sealed. She said she would send someone to seal the bottom of my baseboards as well.

I just need some guidance, I really don’t get what’s happening here. I have no signs of activity according to pest control, okay if they’re coming from someone else’s unit but why so many all of a sudden? I have never seen so much activity. I saw two live bugs today alone, one in the kitchen and one in my bathroom which was new. They never look healthy, always like they’re dying but nevertheless alive. I have emailed my property manager again because she mentioned Aprehend when she came by. The company has been using temprid SC up until now.

TLDR; I have had bed bugs on and off since August, no bites, supposedly a neighbour has an infestation which was recently discovered and property management swears i’m not the “source” yet I keep finding live bugs in my kitchen & living room, never bedroom. Is pest control missing something? Does any of this even make sense?

Useful Information Question On How To Treat Mattress DIY???

Thumbnail

Hi I was looking for a question tag but I guess it doesn't exist here.

Anyway I just wanted to know if what me and my dad was right, so its been 5 days since DIY treatment with some raid bedbug foaming the one without the nozzle (it has the same chemicals as crossfire, if the second treatment of it doesn't work then I will grab two 13 oz of crossfire via Ubuy and treat with those.

For the next treatment I wanted to be sure that it will be done properly, so I have a relatively new matttress around 5 months old, and last time we only sprayed the seams, and edges of it with the cover on.

Now my question is on the second treatment should we go ahead and open it and spray the actual mattress foam inside on its creaks, seams and crevices, or should we do the same thing and just keep the cover on and just spray the seams and edges like what we did last time??

I just wanted to make sure the second DIY treatment will be better or consistent with the first one, which right now has been working decently.

I read the label two times and the label explaining how to treat mattresses is the exact same with crossfire concentrate, which I will also post here as a picture.

Requesting community support Third time with bedbugs - Landlord won't pay.

Let me start by laying out the scene. I live in Michigan. I am on Dialysis, I can't help with heavy lifting. my brother is a lazy ass who won't do anywork around the house, and my dad is 80. Leaving my sister in law to move the furniture and everything. this has been the same apartment complex.

My first experience with bedbugs was in 2019 or 2018. My sister in law wanted to try and deal with them ourselves. I did what I could, but after 6-7 months, I'd had enough, told her I couldn't handle it and was willing to move out to get away from it. She finally relented, told the complex. We got two visits and sprays and that was it. We were bed bug free... until this year.
I'm on Dialysis now, so when I spotted the bedbug on me in june, I immediatly informed them, and fearing DHS, my sister-in-law informed the complex. They came in, sprayed the first time. The second visit, the exterminator said he spotted no traces, and left.
1 month later, I started spotting bed bugs again. My sister in law begged me to give her a month to try and get rid of them. I love my family so I figured I would.
Now, its been 3 months. I'm getting bitten up. My family has not. My sister-in-law insists that the complex won't pay any more for any exterminations. I'm trying to tell her that, unless they can find proof that we brougth them, they have to. Am I right? What should I do?

Requesting community support How do I start steam cleaning?

So back in the summer my mom brought bed bugs to my house and didn't confess to it until much later. She shared my bed with me and subsequently I am the only one being bitten now. I have found a few dead bed bugs in the bed inceptors that I placed and have only found one live one on top of my bed.

I have been searching my bed every few days and I have encasements on my box spring and mattress since the spring but I'm still getting bitten once or twice a week.

I also have diatomascus Earth dusted on the baseboards and my metal bed frame.

I live in a two bedroom apartment and bought a steamer to steam the furniture and my bed frame. So I'm asking how would you start.

My laundry room is through my room so my idea is to leave my room last since anything that has to be put in the dryer has to be walked through my room anyways.

As for the bathroom, living room and kitchen and my kids room, what should I start with?? Furniture? The mattresses all have zippered encasements on them. So should I take those off and steam the mattress? Or just assume that these bugs are hidden in the furniture because there are no signs of them on the mattress themselves.

Please give advice
