I love how they replaced the cigarette with an ice cream.

u/WhiskeyDreamer28 28d ago
That was my same thought. “Guys, this will be awesome for the school musical, but we have to make it PG”
67
u/TheRazorFox 28d ago
I love that they changed to the ice cream, and Pat Smear just lights up and starts smoking when Nirvana is given their award. Idk if its a coincidence or he just wanted a spite smoke.
53
u/Supervriendje 28d ago
Just watched the dance at the VMAs, they also have an ice cream there instead of the cigarette.
21
u/TheCurlyHomeCook 25d ago
I'm so confused. This is the performance at the VMAs, no?
13
u/Supervriendje 25d ago
Oh yeah, I'm an idiot. I thought this was some other group recreating it. Just now noticed that it's just a video from people from the audience...

What cigarette?
213
u/Ianmck13 28d ago
It the original music video this is based off of, he is smoking a cigarette instead of eating ice cream.
38
u/RandomRedditCount 28d ago
Would it have been real ice cream - or mashed potato made to look like ice-cream ( the old tv trick so it doesn’t melt!)

This is an example of what good choreography can do. They look great!
The dancing itself is easy. If you watch the individual moves, they’re not really doing much. It’s a lot of bending down and shaking. But the timing, coupled with the formation (everybody all lined up) and the lighting, makes it look very dramatic and impressive. And that’s a good choreography supposed to do.

u/MonstreDelicat 28d ago edited 28d ago
Yes, it’s not about hard movements to do but how the dancers do it together or against each other and the overall effect reinforced by the immobility of the singer in the middle.
The dancers look at times like violent or gentle ocean waves, fireworks, explosions, or a mechanism. It’s mesmerizing. Watch the full original video.

I’ve been obsessed with this video ever since it came out.
I’ve shared it with a lot of people including my SIL who is the head of the program of a theater. She’s now trying to invite the choreographer to perform at her theater. I hope it works!

I still can’t believe his video lost to Madonna’s. I know it’s the same choreographer but this one is jaw dropping and there’s not even a contest between the two in my eyes.
21
u/kerrbrown 28d ago
Should have won long form video and choreography! But it’s fan voted…so popularity wins 🤷♀️

u/heraclitus33 28d ago
This music video is a masterpiece in storytelling and vibes
18
u/Ok-Assistant-4556 28d ago
It also tapped the zeitgeist in ways Im not sure Madonna's could
2
u/BigMetalGuy 24d ago
i mean, madonna pretty much creates the zeitgeist. She went through a stage of following it, and her work suffered. But generally, she's spent her career creating it and did so again with Confessions II

I would argue the dancing looks easy because they’re good at it. Getting the moves so consistent across that many people requires a lot of practice as a group. This is obviously nowhere close to the difficulty of a ballet routine, but it looks easy because they’re great at it and everyone looks extremely sharp and hits their mark.
8
u/Novaer 28d ago
It looks complicated when everyone is combined into the performance but it's actually quite simple. The choreography was done where everyone in each row just had to learn their specific moves to the song. Every row had its own choreography and timing. Put them all together and it looks very fluid and interactive.

These are professionals. They had the choreography down by the third run through, tops. After that, it’s just making sure you’re hitting your marks, bro.
Someone else in the thread said they got this group together, learned the routine, and performed within four hours. That’s a completely reasonable amount of time when there’s no formation changes, it’s a 4/4 time sig, and an 8 beat count.

u/KnowledgeIsDangerous 28d ago
I don't see how that contradicts anything I said.
Professional dancers have done a ton of individual training, that's how they became professionals.
Four hours of practice is hours of practice.

This is not my typical cuppa tea, but I saw this video a few months ago and it feels silly to say but I found it incredibly emotional. Made my 13yo son (who dances) watch it with me. “I know it may hurt but it won’t last forever” is trite but it became little something of an affirmation for me after that.

u/Living_Knowledge_783 28d ago

Yeah I agree, watched the better quality vid and no way the original would have broken into pieces so nicely like that

I had to scroll so far to find this comment. Why did he do that?
221
u/_banana_phone 28d ago
I am simply making a guess, no juice to back up my hypothesis, but: in the full length video, his character is basically a hellraiser type bully at a boys’ school, and the first 4 minutes of the video is him and his mates smashing and vandalizing the school property and beating up their classmates.
So part of me really thinks this was staged, but of course I could be wrong!

I saw the original video a couple of months ago and it really touched me. I don't think i have ever conected with dance like that. It's a beautiful expression of the aggressiveness, confusion chaos violence fear sadness friendship and extasis that you feel so strongly as a teen. Such an amazing work.

I read somewhere these were not the original dancers from the video and that this group only had 4 hours to learn the bit.
28
u/eekamuse 28d ago
They may have had video to study and only four hours to practice together. Even if they weren't given video, there's the original music video
19
u/Physical_Flight_4496 28d ago
Nah, a family friend is a dancer and they knew at least 24 hours ahead
6
u/Igpajo49 28d ago
I wondered how true it was. One of those things I couldn't find where I read it afterwards. Still find it amazing they'd be able to perfect that in a day. But I'm not a dancer either. Thanks for clarifying.

u/Luckypenny4683 28d ago
That’s a lot of time for someone who is a professional dancer. You learn to pick up choreography extremely quickly.
That’s why it looks so sharp.
24
2
u/Paralystic 24d ago
You can tell, movement is much more snappy in this version, I’m not sure if it’s a difference in the quality of dancers available or just direction.

The original has him with a cig. He was probably not very happy that America made him replace it with a freaking ice cream cone. The boys still gave it their all and blew everyone away, though! Well done! 👏
5
u/EverythingSucksYo 26d ago
I’m sure they told him not to use the cig, but I doubt they told him to switch it to ice cream specifically. That was likely his choice

I'm just so proud of Lean, honestly.
From ginseng strip to this, doing his thing, getting through the difficulties and that.
Love to see it.
Edit- lol why downvote this? Seems a little sad but okay. Edit again- okay lol there we go. Strange one; do people hate him for some reason?
32
u/ylogssoylent 28d ago
This is Yung Lean? Damn. bro started as a meme and ended up inspiring so many musicians
23
u/buttononmyback 28d ago
Ohh okay now I know who he is. I didn’t want to be the cringey redditor that had to post, “Who?” And get downvoted to hell in the comments. 🙄

exactly mate. Him and his lot kinda started the wave of meme/ISH rap. Just cool to see he's still going and doing new things (and this song does go in hard).

It is so strange, first having listened to him almost 15 years ago when a friend intoduced me to him just after his first few songs started doing the rounds in sweden, to now seeing him on some of the biggest stages in the world.
15
u/FanIll5532 28d ago
Didn’t downvote and I don’t hate him. Just wanted to say I had no idea who it is but the way he sings (not live here it seems but still..) is intriguing me. I guess you mean ‘Yung Lean’ yea? Cus that’s a familiar name but I thought it was a rapper lol. I will definitely check his music out now that I saw this.
10
u/stuffcrow 28d ago
Yep absolutely, and he is/was a rapper. Or something. Very much always did his own thing; him and his crew from back in the day really paved the way in a lot of ways (for better or worse).
Ginseng Strip, Kyoto, Hennessy and Sailor Moon are some of my favourites of his, but they're (/his stuff in general) absolutely not for everyone.
Go in with an open and fun mind and you'll find some stuff to enjoy in his catalogue. This seems some of his most mature work though and seems a departure (but I admit I haven't kept up with his releases in what feels like a decade lol).

Having a hard time understanding the meaning of the song, but the music video was very good, and the choreography is amazing.
26
u/Igpajo49 29d ago
I think it's got something to do with the context of the longer piece which is about a Boy's school in a dystopian England where that character is a bully who's taking over the school.

u/TrixieBastard 28d ago
I thought this looked like the game Bully, and I guess it pretty much is, huh?

Yup. Kids (people under 25 - and yes you're still a kid and will understand when you grow up) nowadays watch music 1st, and listen to music 2nd. It's why MTV doesn't even play music anymore, and instead we have hyperproduced spectacle nonsense like this, or hypersexualized nonsense that they act like isn't hypersexualized, like Olivia Rodrigo or Sabrina Carpenter. Eyes bring in more money than ears. Talent is now an afterthought. Can you do the puppet dances in a skimpy or evocative outfit though? Yes!? Sold!
