should I buy this model?
I want a Baofeng alongside my world receiver, what can I do with GT-5R

Due to FCC action, new devices seem to be locked to these transmit frequencies in firmware. Be aware of this when purchasing new devices.
That means they cannot be used on MURS, GMRS, FRS, Marine VHF, or Part 90 business frequencies. No LARPing without a ham license.
This cannot be worked around via Chirp programming, AFAIK.

Outstanding questions:
YMMV, as old stock may still be present with some sellers.

We have had several pilots post their interest in getting a Baofeng as a "backup" radio for air band use. This is a BAD IDEA™ for multiple technical and legal reasons:
In short, these are the wrong tools for the job for multiple technical reasons in addition to the legal reasons.
Furthermore, I would question your judgement as a pilot if you were to rely on a $30 piece of crap radio as a backup. Remember that baofengs aren't popular because they are good, they are popular because they are cheap.
There are technically competent and legal air band handheld radios from Yaesu and Icom. Get one of those:

I’m new to the topic sorry if I got it wrong.
I’m looking for an EU-legal radio that can use local only beeps, something like:
But only I should hear them, and not the people I talk to.
Is there anything that can do this? Can’t find any definite info with Google and not sure where to look.

This may be a dumb question, but do I need an amateur radio license to use a Baofeng uv-5r or uv-5g radio? At the end of the day I’m looking for a decent walkie talkie for friends and I to use when cell service is sketchy or non existent and I found the radios cheap on fb market place (sue me). But my brief research of the radios has not been definitive (Baofeng’s website takes me to dead FCC websites and I don’t know the FCC enough to know if its regulation apply).

I recently got this radio and even though I've turned off "Dual Watch", the screen still shows 2 different sets of frequencies both on Zone 1 when I turn it on. Is this the default behavior? How do I monitor other Zones on this radio? I'm new to GMRS but not 2-way radios. Thank you for your assistance.

Hi. I have purchased three Baofeng UV-9R Pro radios. Like another user mentioned in a different thread, I am unable to upload data to the radio using CHIRP, although downloading from the radio works fine. Both functions work with the original Baofeng software (from 2004), but that program does not allow for adjusting other radio settings. I need to adjust the squelch (SQL) level—an option that is available in CHIRP but missing from the Baofeng software. With the default minimum squelch level set to 118, the radio becomes unusable once there is some distance between units. Is there any alternative to CHIRP for adjusting the squelch setting? I live in an area with very little radio interference, so I want to lower the threshold as much as possible to achieve the best possible range for moose hunting.

So I picked up a Baofeng UV-68P-M dual-band FM transceiver, and I'm officially lost in the sauce with this thing.
I had the Bluetooth programming setup, but the radio got stolen — and they took the Bluetooth programming gear with it. 🤦♂️ Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to program this thing manually.
My question is: Do I need a license to operate the UV-68P-M, and what are the rules about using it?
I understand that programming and operating a radio are two different things. If I'm transmitting on amateur-radio frequencies, I assume I need the appropriate amateur-radio license. I'm also wondering what restrictions apply if someone tries to use a radio like this on frequencies assigned to aviation, air-traffic control, the FAA, public safety, or other services without authorization.
Can someone explain which frequencies I'm legally allowed to transmit on, whether I can listen without transmitting, and what could happen if I transmit where I'm not permitted? I'd also appreciate clarification on whether manually programming a frequency makes it legal to use.
If anybody has experience with the Baofeng UV-68P-M, could you point me to the correct manual, provide the exact button sequence for manual programming, and share any reliable programming guidance or setup instructions for this specific model? I'd really appreciate the help.
I'm willing to learn; I just need somebody to point me in the right direction before I end up pressing buttons until I accidentally contact the International Space Station. 😂
Thanks in advance, folks!
I love my Baofeng DM32 for the hardware, but the firmware has always been a bit lacking for amateur use, so I've been working on modifying it to be a lot more friendly for amateur users. Basically, I'm trying to make the Baofeng firmware look and feel like OpenGD77.
It's still early days, but I've just released 1.2.0 for public use https://github.com/pskillen/mm9pdy-firmware
Features: * Your zone is now your scan list * Separate talk group list (no more programming 5 copies of your repeater) * GPS distance from repeater * Quick menu for filters, etc
Note this is still quite early in development! I've never bricked a radio, but there's always the chance.

It's currently not working and I would like to purchase a new one without having to get a new antenna.

I made a web-based codeplug editor for the Baofeng DM-32UV to make managing channels, zones, scan lists, talk groups, and other settings easier than using the official CPS software.
It's free, open source, runs entirely in your browser, and doesn't require installing anything.
Try it here: https://e1ioan.github.io/dm32uv-codeplug-studio/
GitHub/source code: https://github.com/e1ioan/dm32uv-codeplug-studio
How to use it:
.data file..data file. Some useful features include bulk editing multiple channels, CSV import/export, easy channel assignment to zones and scan lists, and highlighting modified entries.
The app preserves the original codeplug structure and only modifies the necessary data. No files are uploaded to a server.
It's still a work in progress, since parts of the Baofeng file format are reverse-engineered. Keep a backup of your original codeplug and verify changes in CPS before writing to the radio.
Feedback, bug reports, and contributions are welcome!

Hello all, I had a quick question about the software for a DM32UV that I picked up. I didn’t realize that the Baofeng programming software was not directly compatible with Mac/ Apple computers.
With that in mind, I have a couple of questions:
1: are there any simple, cheap, and easy to understand work arounds for this?
2: would an android tablet support this software and if so would a tablet still be effective to use or would it just become a giant pain?
3: if neither of those work, are there any super cheap and simple laptops or otherwise that I could buy specifically to do radio stuff on?
I appreciate the help!

Wireless programming with CHIRP and the TIDRADIO BL-1 using a Python script & com0com. The script looks for BL-1 devices then opens a bridge tied to a virtual COM port pair. When cloning, the script handles the data exchange through the COM ports and Bluetooth, and reads/writes the radio memory.
(Coded using LLM strictly for proof-of-concept exhibition purposes only—using untested experimental programming methods can brick your radio)

Daughter just got her Tech ticket - looking for a source of:
SMA-F (to attach to BFeng's SMA-M ant. mount).
BUT, with a 90°BNC-F (to attach to the pointy end of SignalStuffs BNC-M mag mount antennae rig [coax out to antenna]).
Need links please.

Ola, Me chamo, Jose Augusto. Estou começando uma nova jornada no mundo do RADIOAMADORISMO. Comprei recentemente meu Baofeng UV-21.
Alguem poderia me ajudar?
ou se alguem ja conseguiu BAIXAR a imagem original que acompanha no BAOFENG UV21.
Para entao eu aplicar minhas imagens personalizadas futuramente!

In follow up to my post looking for additional infromation:
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/1x6wr7f/speakermic_issue_w_uv5r_mini/
I did some physical testing and found that the issue is the way the body is molded on the UV-5R Mini, there's not enough space on the bottom side to allow for a heavier duty speakermic pin, such as the BTECH QHM22, or the BTECH QHM22D.
Since Baofeng won't accept information provided, I don't expect to get any help from them, and I've learned that this radio just isn't cut out for work in the field, but it's a fun toy!
ETA:
The high number of comments about 'commercial use' are a bit troubling.
Maybe some of you should get out and 'play radio' with your buddies a little more often.... :D
