Masters of the Air was a huge let down for me. Not even close to the Pacific let alone BoB.

Is Masters of the Sky worth it?

It’s worth it, but man I found it so disappointing compared to the former two.
I was so hyped for it but the two main pilots were so smarmy and always smirking and acting like they were superior. Made it hard for me to root for them. Never had that issue in the previous two, even with people like Snafu haha.
It also treated the British airmen like they were clumsy idiots.
Worth the watch either way and visually stunning of course.

I was left pretty nonplussed by the writing, save for Crosby most of the main characters felt like caricatures.
All in I found myself missing BoB more than anything else. Masters of the air just felt much more Hollywood

Thanks! I’ll watch it. I loved BOB and The Pacific.
I did read The Wild Blue by Stephen Ambrose as a kid but I’m guessing it’s not based on that.

The Wild Blue itself was heavily plagiarized from Wings of Morning, and was the book that really broke the dam on Ambrose's plagiarism issues.

If you fast forward over the completely useless and insulting Basilone
/ Leckie love story episodes, The Pacific is passable…some moments even quite memorable. Not as many casting home runs because - a) the characters are much more forgettable and generic (but they were dealing with 2.5 ‘companies’ of guys in fairness)- and b) other than Rami Malek (whose own performance is frankly a little weird) and Jon Bernthal- not one of those guys parlayed their role into much fame or fortune (unlike the BoB crowd). But just can’t get past the love stories - when I skim through the stupidness of the Basilone/Lena and Leckie-in-Australia eps… I literally cannot imagine what the producers were thinking . “Let’s turn Band of Brothers into The Winds of fucking War!” - just totally unforgivable. Makes me physically angry.Masters is damn near unwatchable though - and makes The Pacific look like Breaking Bad. I rolled through it with great anticipation upon release; but haven’t watched a minute of it since. Dont blame HBO for passing on it.
Spielberg and Hanks couldn’t resist turning every scene of the air war over Europe into a ridiculous looking X-wings vs TiE fighters-over- Endor shootout. Did you know Fw190’s traveled in squadrons of 40 and could fly at Mach 6? Neither did I. Scripts and pacing was uneven. And with the exception of Austin Butler, the acting was abominable.

I’ll be a Luddite for a second, the book was better. It was also nearly a thousand pages. They did well given the limitations on time, but they skip a LOT.

Which book?
The Pacific's companion book was really good because of the additions of the Shofner and Micheel stories, but also because it allowed for a more complete view of stuff like Basilone's issues when he got back stateside as well as far more detail on some of the postwar issues that all of them suffered that were only touched on in the show.

Masters of the Air is not in the same universe as BoB and the Pacific.
