Welcome to Ask A Cobbler! Please read to familiarize yourself with a few rules.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for stopping by and showing their interest & support for shoe repair. In one day, we went from almost no subscribers to well over 100. This is an incredible start!

As we gain more members, I feel there needs to be a few ground rules just to keep things in order.

  1. Discussing of prices. Pricing on repair work depends on MANY factors than just the damage alone. While we may say a job will or will not be worth the money, saying it will cost $xx is against the rules and posts will be removed.

  2. Be respectful. The cobblers responding to your post have numerous years of experience and are here to offer some of their extensive knowledge of the craft at no charge. If you have been helped, a simple thanks goes a long way.

  3. When posting a picture of a damaged product, make sure the photos are detailed enough so that we can understand the exact condition, brand and anything else you think will help us to help you.

  4. Users with the "SSIA Member" flair are verified cobblers.

Rules will be amended an updated as we progress. Thanks for reading!

Sandgren wood clogs problems

I’ve bought multiple sizes of the Gunnar to try to solve several problems.

problem 1: the leather stretches considerably more making an uncomfortably tight shoe loose.

problem 2: likely similar reason, the back bows out. this problem was at least resolved by preemptively adding a leather strip around the heel of the foot. (on the shoe leather innner)

problem 3: as the leather stretched it dramatically increased the risk of rolling the ankle and I’ve done it to injure the shoe twice pulling staples free, first time a cobbler just added two staples for free. second time just happened pulling an entire side out.

problem 4: the rubber… when it wore out I replaced it but after several attempts I gave up trying to find a material that wouldn’t slip… I don’t understand why… but I can’t find a pair of soles that are non slip on hard wood floors so eventually the company sent me two sets.
the cobbler replaced the sole for me but I realized he just used a few staples and no glue…

so I guess I’m asking a few questions, can I realistically fix the problems I have without basically hiring a cobbler to customize my shoes ie replacing the leather and fasteners?

can I fix the shoes I have from the stretch and repeated staples popping out?

what is the best way or is there instructions on replacing the soles myself? 60$ for a few staples seems like highway robbery especially when it doesn’t last.

is there a pair of wood shoes that actually will hold up to frequent wear? I’m not expecting a miracle but I’d expect that if I take care of the leather and replace the soles that they should at the very least last a few years… I can upload photos of any of these problems too if needed.

I’m a nurse, I’m on my feet for 12 hour shifts 4-6 days a week. I love these things, so comfortable but I can’t afford to replace them every 6 months to a year.

Tunit - does it need a sole protector?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’m looking at adding a pair of new shoes to my everyday wear, and some of the pairs I’m looking at are by Anonymous Copenhagen. Most models have a Thunit sole - which I’m not familiar with in terms of care.

Will these need a sole protector before use like leather soles? Or are these more like Crepe or vibram soft rubber soles where they only need to be replaced if worn down?

Thank you!

The rest of the shoe is still basically new its just this part is peeling off.. I guess i could half save it by just gluing it but it still will look like theres cracks and eventually will keep getting worse :/

Heal length calculations?

Dose anyone have any recommendations for calculating the heal brest mark I've stitched the soles on and lost my markings 😅

I used the width of heal +5mm as arno recommends when making my insole but now have a 360 Storm welt sewn on so am unsure if that method will transfer

Are these boots worth it?

Hello all, I picked these up from a thrift store for $5, and they are obviously in rough shape. They need to be resoled. Would this be a worthy endeavor? I am aware of the controversy of Doc Martens haha.

Are these salvageable?

Hi guys! Thanks in advance for your time!

Those are Puma Desiertos, I think the first ones. They are faux fur, but they look like kinda like nubuck. I have worn them only in the harshest winter days, but Germany's winter is known for being more rainy, so not thaaat often. I have only cleaned them with soap or damp cloth. They are pretty old, at least 6 years! So not that bad for faux leather winter shoes. 🙂

I'll keep this short. I really like this model and new ones are already bought (with Puretex!) and on the way, but I might play around and try and salvage those. I was thinking about cleaning them, sanding the roughest bits and applying leather glue (idk how it's called, sorry) and then a matching nail polish. The problem is that matte look. Idk if sanding the nail polish will work.

Do you think I'll just lose my time?

Wondering what would be recommended for these soles

Hi, basically I got a good deal on these boots second hand and have been using them for work wearing them 3/4 times a week and this is how the sole is looking. Would it be worth A, replacing the whole sole, B a rubber half sole or C leave how it is.

Thanks in advance.

Can a cobbler help fill a heel gap?

Post image

I have New Rock leather loafers. They’re unisex and so I believe they’re just a bit too big, particularly at the heel. I have an insole and a tongue pad which has helped a lot, but I believe the heel shape is just too wide and so it slips out. Is there something a cobbler can do to help? I tried butterfly heel grips but they just constantly come off.

What leather are these boots made from, and how should I restore and care for them?

I recently picked up these leather boots at a charity shop for a fiver. They are apparently made in Quito, Ecuador, construction seems decent. I'd like to restore them and use them regularly, but I'd appreciate some advice before applying any products. If you could help me find out:

- What kind of leather this is? I've included some close ups of the leather. (Seems approx 3mm thick at an exposed edge, quite firm)

- Do I need to restore or service them? (The leather seems reasonably supple, and the soles and stitching appear to be in decent condition)

- What is the white residue I've found inside the lining of the tongue? (See image) It was kind of waxy and used isopropyl to clean it.

They also smell kind of musty, like an old leather trunk.

Appreciate any advice and insights you might have.

Remove metal logo from shoes

Post image

Is there any way to remove this round silver logo and keep the back of the shoe looking neat? It seems to pierce the suede and go through the material. So I guess a hole will stay there if it’s removed. I would love to have a simple, no logo look.

Any way to fix this heel discoloration? Don’t need a perfect match, just to make it so it’s not white and stands out. Thanks!

Any idea what these givenchy soles are?

Post image

With the age of these shoes most examples already have cracked soles and if they don't they soon sure will

I've only seen them on one another brand and hence I'm assuming that they're not custom made for this model specifically

If not, is it a smart idea to contact a replica seller for soles??

What outsole stitcher to get and where to buy it?

What outsole stitcher is everyone using and where did you get it? Are there manufacturers who still make new ones or do I have to go the used route?

Why aren't lasts actually shaped like feet?

Down the rabbit hole of shoe construction lately, and there's one thing that keeps bugging me:
Why do so many lasts—even high-end ones—still look so... well, straight and wedge-shaped from above?
Human feet flare out at the toes and curve inward, but traditional lasts often seem to force the big toe straight (or even outward) instead of following our actual anatomy. I get that historically, straight lasts were a thing so you could wear either shoe on either foot, but we’re way past that.
Even today, it feels like most lasts are designed to look sleek from the top-down rather than actually matching a foot.
So for the makers and cobblers here:
1. Is it purely about traditional aesthetics and how a shoe "should" look on the shelf, or are there actual manufacturing reasons (machinery, lasting, patterns) why a truly foot-shaped last is a nightmare to work with?
2. Does a straighter last actually help with structural things like heel lock, shank tension, or how the Goodyear welt holds up?
3. Why don't more heritage/traditional brands adopt a more anatomical toe box while keeping a proper waist, heel, and welt?

$50 victorian boots i got from fb marketplace needs a bit of tlc

Post image
3 Upvotes

as the title says, i got these boots from fb marketplace for $50 and i got too excited bc they were literally my size that i just bought them w/o asking if they were real leather (they’re not). they came and they fit like a glove but the inside is decaying like crazy, and while the internet is saying that it’s practically ruined and unfixable, the exterior of the boot is fine and besides the obvious wear in the leather, there’s no flaking.
So I was thinking of getting rid of the remaining flaking polyurethane and lining it w/ black fabric.

Please let me know if that’s possible! I’ll take any tips and advice, thanks!

Deep scar, is it likely to tear?

Thumbnail

I recently got these Red Wing Iron Ranger rough out boots and they’re one of my favorite. I inspect all my stuff so I ended up finding this weird scar that you can see in the attached. They’re sold out so I’m at a loss regarding what to do. I’d like to keep, but I really like how they look aged and I’m worried that this would compromise the quality of the boots. Any cobblers out there with advice or a view on whether this is an issue? Have a week or so left before I have to decide whether to return or keep.

The first pic is the outside and the second pic is the same part but on the inside.
