Announcement What’s New in r/ArtAdvice (and What’s Next)

Happy Friday! We've been hard at work behind the scenes and are excited to share a number of updates we've rolled out to improve the community for everyone.

A Fresh Look

With a new logo and color palette, we wanted to make this space feel more recognizably "us," drawing inspiration from redline corrections seen in constructive critiques, and pairing it with a dark blue background that is easier on the eyes. (A special thanks goes out to a friend in the graphic design industry who helped make this design possible!)

Automod Update

We previously tested an Automod feature that reminded users to include context in their posts. This ended up causing confusion and was mistaken for a warning or removal message, so we've axed it. (See: "In Progress and Coming Soon" for what we're trying next.)

Crossposts

Crossposts have been disabled to keep context easily accessible without extra clicks. Since making this change, we've already seen an increase in engagement and traffic, along with less spam. Woo!

Post and User Flairs

Starting May 1st, post flairs will be required to submit a post. For now, flairs are optional to help users get used to selecting them before posting. We want to keep the subreddit organized and let users filter out content they're not interested in, especially Commissions and Pricing. (The "No Commissions Posts" option is available in the sidebar or top bar on mobile.)

Most users seem to have a solid understanding of the flairs and are applying them well. Here's a quick breakdown of what each one means:

Post Flair Description
Critique Ask what to change or how to improve.
Techniques and Tools Ask how to do something or what tools to use.
Commissions and Pricing Ask about pricing, selling, or managing commissions.
Discussion and Theory Discuss ideas, concepts, or "why" questions.
Resources and Tutorials Ask for or share learning materials.
Social Media and Growth Ask about growth or visibility.

Please keep Rule #5 "No Self-Promotion" in mind when using the Commissions and Social Media flairs.

Some of you have noticed our user flair 🧑‍🏫 Community Mentor! It's our way of celebrating users who consistently engage respectfully and help others grow through thoughtful, constructive feedback. We appreciate you helping keep r/ArtAdvice a supportive space!

So, how does someone actually earn the Community Mentor flair?

  • Provide feedback that explains what works or can be improved in an artwork.
  • Offer applicable and practical advice.
  • Be consistent in giving constructive critiques.
  • Avoid aggressive communication, and always follow the rules.

The Community Mentor flair is assigned manually by moderators. There is no formal application process, and users cannot request this flair.

Note: This flair does not mean the user is a professional artist, or that their opinions are authoritative. It also does not mean they represent the moderation team.

Have ideas for new flairs? Let us know in the comments!

Rule Updates

As previously mentioned in our Community Feedback & Suggestions announcement, our rules have been updated to better reflect the purpose of the subreddit, which is to give and receive art advice. The core principles remain the same, but they have been expanded to better address common ambiguous issues that tend to arise in Reddit communities.

In Progress and Coming Soon

  • A new subreddit banner is in progress.
  • Our community wiki is currently in the works as we await Reddit's system migration. This will become your go-to hub for information on rules, flairs, policies, resources, and more!
  • More detailed policies, especially regarding AI, will be added soon.
    • In the meantime, please refer to Rule #4 "Keep Art Human" for a quick rundown of how r/ArtAdvice handles the topic of AI.
  • We're working on implementing an Automod response triggered by keyword phrases that automatically provides a list of resources, allowing users to focus more on anecdotal or specific feedback.
  • As the sub continues to grow, we plan to reopen mod applications in the coming months. Those who are active and engage with the community will have our focus.

Community Initiatives

There's something exciting brewing in the background! Along with all these changes and updates, we're planning on:

  • Developing structured guides exclusive to our community.
  • Hosting AMAs and/or interviews with working artists to share their insight into what has or has not worked for them in their process.
  • Involve members to contribute to the community wiki to help curate a reliable set of resources.
  • Contests and giveaways to help growing artists thrive in their career or hobby. (We just need to dust off the old law book to make sure everything is in compliance before moving forward.)

We love hearing from the community, so if you have any feedback on these changes or suggestions to share, please leave a comment below or send us a message via Mod Mail!

‎Discussion and Theory A user fed my art to ai

Please let me know if this belongs in a different subreddit, I just dont know where else to post this.

So recently, I made a post seeking for art advice, and my post is shown in the secondimage above, and just a few hours ago, one user commented on my post saying that they fed my art to Claude agent since it looked 'nice'.

I never gave them permission to do so, and I do not understand as to why they decided that it was a good choice to steal my art style. When I say stolen, it includes the character designs as well. As shown, some of these ocs weren't mine, and by feeding it to ai, the user has not only stolen my art style, but fed other's creative ideas to ai.

Im really disappointed, and now am really hesitant about posting for criticism on reddit.

Im not saying that every users do this. I know that there are tons of great artists that provide professional criticisms, and I got lots of good ones on my post as well, Im sorry if this post is really long, I just wanted to discuss about this and spread awareness of ai feeding.

‎Discussion and Theory Requesting Advice: My art keeps getting traced by a specific person. They always deny it and threaten me with lawyers when I talk about it publicly. They claim that because the character is theirs, they are allowed to 'redraw' my art.

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I gave this character to somebody who was a friend about ten years ago and I kept the art that I made of the OC back when she was still mine.
Her current owner has taken to 'redrawing' my art, as they call it. They've done this several times, and there are times when the so-called 'redraw' they do is of a different OC of theirs and not of the OC in the art they are 'redrawing'.

They threaten me with lawyers when I talk about it, usually mentioning that they're going to be telling their lawyer what I'm saying or something along those lines. Or they post about what I say and mention that they're taking legal action.

I'm seeking advice for what to do. I report them wherever I can and it usually works. They've been banned from three websites already. But they post to Deviantart as well and that site folds instantly under pressure once somebody sends a counterclaim. I think I've successfully reported them on X and BSky but I haven't checked to see if those sites reinstated the images after this person sent them a counterclaim.
((For those who don't know, Deviantart and some other sites will fold if you send in a DMCA and the other person sends a counterclaim. IIRC it's a legal liability thing and not necessarily the site siding with one person or the other))

Despite calling it for what it is, posting bewares, reporting them, them being banned on multiple sites, they continue to do this.

Again, this was somebody who used to be a friend of mine but we had a falling out in 2016. They basically disappeared for ten years then recently came back around and continued 'redrawing' my art like they had been ten years ago. So I literally haven't spoken to this person in ten years and so IDK what this is all about or why they're doing this. I've blocked them wherever I can but they've used alternate accounts to get around the blocks.

I've already had somebody leave a comment on one of my posts of my arts heavily insinuating that I stole art from this person and they linked to this person's 'redraw'. I had to give them a link to where I originally posted the art years before (2018 IIRC) and they never replied so it seems this person is telling stories somewhere. It's to the point where I'm having to post links to where I originally posted something years ago so stop people from accusing me of stealing my own art.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover I'm struggling to draw his hair from the front.

Hey so I've been working on this for a while now and keep quitting because I'm struggling with his hair. I was able to find references on Pinterest but none of them feel right and I'm trying to match it to the picture in the reference window. I'm planning on redoing the reference photo I have of him to match my art style as the reference is something I made two years ago. Any advice would be appreciated, also maybe how to draw his neck and shoulders. He's got muscle but a thinner frame hence the softer face structure.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover I desperately need help with rendering

I already know my proportions are wonky, and my hands are god awful, so I'd prefer no comments on that (I'm learning slowly through practice). The thing I mainly want help with is the render looking muddy and uninteresting. Also color and lighting help would be appreciated.

I included earlier versions of the same image, the proportions changed because I used the transform tool.

‎Discussion and Theory My teacher made me feel like a failure as an artist

Basically, I dropped out after 2 years of art school, I'm a psych student now in another college and am currently in my first year

I left the school for a lot of reasons, toxic people that hate me because I because our language teacher's favourite (Which I didn't even expect to happen), facilities are so bad that we are expected to bring our own computers cuz the computers at school don't always work despite us paying thousands for our tuition, we don't even have our own college building because it's still not completely finished after a decade and it got destroyed before

But one thing that really stuck with me was our art teacher, the strictest one in our school

Now, my other teachers like me so far, especially our art teacher that taught us simplification and sketching (Forgive me, I forgot the names of our subjects as it's been years and I'm technically supposed to be a fourth year right now if I didn't drop out)

But our strictest teacher, the one that makes us take every single measurement possible with calligraphy and how much detail is in our work

I didn't know how to please this teacher because he wouldn't tell us other than the usual instructions

Plus, his subject is traditional art while I'm used to digital art, so it was taking me a while to get used to it

One time, we were made to do achromatic painting so that's what I did with the color green

I was really proud of my work and I followed his instructions but when I showed it to him, he looked sad

Then he told me if I'm sure I even want this course

I was really confused and he didn't even say what was wrong with my artwork specifically, he didn't say if more details are needed or if I misunderstood the rules

Or if I just needed to improve more on my traditional works

I would've done what he said if he had just told me but instead he just look really sad, as if I really disappointed him and made him sad as a teacher

That comment has stuck with me since and makes me feel like I must've been a really bad artist if that's the case

‎Critique - Yes Drawover The second image is a reference and does not belong to me; the source is provided in the description. Look, I’ve been drawing for a long time, yet I keep making mistakes with proportions—even though I use geometric shapes.

‎‎Techniques and Tools Image transfer onto a printed hardboard painting – advice on technique and materials?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m interested in trying an image transfer technique using acrylic transfer medium or gel, but I’m not sure whether it would work on the surface I have.

The painting I bought is printed on a hardboard panel, not canvas. The surface has a regular, canvas-like grid texture, and I don’t know whether it has a protective varnish or coating.

I’m considering using a laser-printed image and a transfer medium, such as Amsterdam Photo Transfer Gel, to transfer it onto the existing picture. I’d also like to be able to paint over parts of the transferred image with acrylics afterwards.

Has anyone tried this technique on a printed painting or a textured hardboard surface?

Would the transfer medium adhere properly, or could it damage or lift the original print when removing the paper? Would a different technique, such as adhering thin printed paper with acrylic matte medium, be a better option?

I’d appreciate any recommendations for suitable products, techniques, or precautions. I’ve attached photos of the painting and a close-up of its surface.

Thanks in advance!

Ive posted a couple times the last week and was looking for advice to progress my ability.

Yesterday I tried the loomis method again as people had suggested and lets say it wasnt my best drawing, so I thought id show how i draw and the steps to the final thing.

I always find i draw better blocking in shapes than doing the loomis method, I dont know if anyone else is the same 😅

If you see anything you think i should focus more on please let me know and please add some sort of resource I could look at, thanks

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Opinions on this basic anatomy study?

Thumbnail

I'm trying to study anatomy. I've been learning more about the bones of the torso (I'm a beginner, so I wanted to start by going point by point, to learn each part well before moving on). I made these sketches to practice my new skills. I'd like to know your opinions and what things you feel are wrong or could be improved. Thank you very much.

I also have trouble masculinizing the figure. I aspire to be a gay NSFW artist, and I feel like I haven't done a good job of conveying that this figure is masculine, if you know what I mean. I feel it has to do with how I draw the upper area. Although I think I accidentally made the pelvis too wide and the rib cage too narrow at the bottom.
