Help!? Six months on a moss pole 😍

This maturing baby was rescued and reduced to a few £s, from Tesco on a coir pole in April. A couple of months of research and three vines out of six were placed on this moss pole.

The growth rate has been astonishing!

- Water twice per week with half strength fertiliser

- Lighting is a Barrina T10 Pro on for 14 hours per day

- Spa day in the shower once per month with just water, to flush out any lingering fertiliser build-up

All of this inspired by Sydney Plant Guy, so props to him!

It's just been an absolute joy giving life back into this gorgeous thing over the past few months. I hope I'll have a good level of maturity at the top of the next extension.

My only concern is the asymmetric growth between the two main vines. Any thoughts or ideas how to deal with this? 🤔

Help!? Adventive Alocasia in Italy

Thumbnail

Hello everyone,

I am looking for help with the identification of this Alocasia clump found growing as an adventive in a dry Mediterranean riverbed in Southern Italy.

Considering the habitat is subject to long seasonal drought and intense solar radiation, a true equatorial species like A. macrorrhizos would likely not survive here. I suspect this might be a hardy horticultural hybrid (likely Alocasia ×calidora or portora or similar).

I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what entity could be this plant, if possible from these photos.

I am planning to collect a voucher specimen as soon as I'll be able to.

Thank you in advance for your insights!

Discussion Using strainers as pots to accelerate plant growth

I've been learning about bonsai from a guy that has a youtube channel and a real academy recently. He went to japan to learn from a renowed master.

He says that they taught him to use strainers as pots to make the small trees grow way faster than they would do in a regular pot. The logic behind this is that they get more oxigen, and prevent root rot. The downside is that you need to water more often.

I know this isnt a bonsai subreddit, but I feel like this can be usefull to pretty much all plants. I know aroids are usually planted in orchid pots which have several holes in the bottom and on the sides. What if we drilled even more holes so they are realistically a strainer?

Has anyone tried this?

Here is the difference between two cuttings of the same tree with 5 years of potting in a normal pot vs in a strainer. The one with the normal pot is the one from the teacher, to make it more fair. You can tell the tree is way thicker and stronger. The student also lives closer go the teacher so the climate is similar.

I feel like this technique could give a kick to our aroids. I'll wait until my monstera thai constellation needs a repot so I dont't damage any roots from drilling onto the current pot.

In bonsai they focus on making the roots grow sideways so they can fit in small bonsai pots later. I don't know if that would be beneficial or detrimental for aroids, instead of growing deeper. In any case, you can just make drill holes into a deeper container instead of buying a strainer.

Hope this helps the comunity and let me know if you try it!

Discussion Question regarding fertilizer in aroid mixes

I'm not asking for brand advice on fertilizer here - it's something more general that's puzzling me.

I have my aroids in homemade aroid mixes, which consist of at least 33% pre- fertilized pon and 33% pre- fertilized orchid bark. The remaining third varies a bit depending on the plant and its needs for water retention, but that part is some kind of regular potting mix in most cases, sometimes with some portion of cut spaghnum moss in it, if I need to up water retention. Or a portion of hydrangea soil, if I want to lower the pH of the mix. Or a portion of cactus soil, if I want to lower the water retention even further. Etc.: the third part is variable.

Recently I was told that I should opt for fertilizers that are optimized for semi- hydro in such a mix. Is that true? Plus, I was told organic or partially organic fertilizers wouldn't make any sense in aroid mixes, since they would be lacking the necessary bacteria, etc. to break them down. Is that true too?

Asking, because I'm struggling a bit to find a suitable fertilizer: it just seems my setup (or my plants 😉) might be a bit borderline. While I can see some of my anthuriums showing clear signs of being "hungry" despite being regularly fertilized (yellowing of oldest leafs), I will occasionally see others showing fairly clear signs of over- fertilization (like crisping tips).

Btw.: I do regular flushes. The thing that makes them all really, really happy, however, is a repot. If I'd ask them, I think the anthuriums would all file for trimestrial substrate changes. Which tells me I'm not fertilizing optimally, I guess 😉

Pic 2 was July 2025. Somewhere along the way she moved up to moss and wrapped every inch of it. She's in a gritty mix in a 26 cm pot, last repotted on New Year's Eve. The two charts are her spot and watering since I started tracking in June.

Cedar planks for climbing philodendrons/aroids? Looking for recommendations!

I’m thinking about trying cedar planks for my climbing aroids, especially my philodendrons, and was wondering if anyone here has experience with them!
I tried making my own moss pole, and honestly, I’ve realized I just don’t have the energy to keep up with keeping it constantly damp lol. I thought it would be easier, but that thing dried out like a rock, so lesson learned! 😂 I really want to give my plants something sturdy and more tree-like to climb, and I’d prefer actual wood over plastic or bamboo since I haven’t been a fan of those.

I’ve heard cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and bugs, so it seems like it could be a good option. I know Home Depot and Lowe’s sell cedar boards, but I’m curious where everyone else gets theirs. Are there any good brands on Amazon that sell packs of cedar planks, or other reputable places to order them from?
I’d love to hear what’s worked well for your plants, what size or thickness you recommend, and if there’s anything I should know before trying them. I’m open to other types of wood, too, as long as they’re sturdy and give my plants something natural to climb! Thanks! ♡

Help!? Please help me fix my Motherinlaw's monsteras

Thumbnail

Hi!

First of all i am so sorry for the plant gore. My Mother-in-law gave me her monsteras because she doesnt have space for them anymore, and since i tried to istruct her on what to do i must know everithing about them :D

The plants ar old, was constantly rotated and never staked or fixed to anything they could climb

I told her she should cut them up under and above each node and put them in water to root them out. She cut one in half and put them in water, but the end rotted away. A few weeks ago i cut away the rotting part and put it in fresher water, but it shows no sign of roots yet. Should i keep that one like that or cut it shorter? Under the leaf node maybe?

Where should i cut the rest? Could you please help?

Again i am so sorry for the pictures ; _ ;
