Called a local squirrel expert, they said make sure it’s eating and drinking, let it rest a couple days and send it on its way. They said that’s the same thing he was gonna do if I brought it but to have the actual experience myself would be better.

Don’t have too much content because I didn’t interact with him but three times but,

Trying to interact as least as possible with a squirrel is impossible given the cuteness of the subject.

I saw some little squirrels interacting on the pine tree we released him towards so hopefully that’s home to him.

Sorry for the terrible editing lmao and I’m missing all the clips I have of my home security cams, there’s more content but idk if I’ll be able to get to it. Here you go.

Godspeed little squirrel buddy.

The day a Flying Squirrel jumped off my hand and disappeared into the nether

Sick/Injured Wildlife Native Southern Flying Squirrel — Was hunted overnight and survived a cat attack. Any tips for what to do with it?

Houston, Texas

I have a tiny squirrel in a box with some newspaper at the bottom and some fruits and nuts and water in a bowl. It’s not a baby but it doesn’t look grown. It looks like the attached picture with the same colors and pattern on its side and the flat tail.

_____

Context: Saturday night, I heard a cat scuffling and chirping I thought he’d gotten a rat and didn’t think much of it, but then I saw that it got away from him and ran up the gutter. It tried to jump onto the roof and it fell to the ground, splat, and the cat grabbed it and took off with it so I thought meh it’s done.

Yesterday morning, I found the cat scurrying around my front porch so I shooed him off and then moved the folding table he was messing with and the little squirrel was in the middle hiding from him idk how long.

This is a survivor.
_______

Found it yesterday and I’m thinking I’m going to give it somewhere to rest for a few days and then release it in the woods away from the houses? It doesn’t look wounded like bloody but idk if you guys would recommend actually taking it in somewhere to be looked at?

I don’t have money for it nor can I keep it, but I think the least I owe it is some rest, some food, a chill few days and then release out back, no? I’ll try to interact with it as least as possible

Thanks in advance

_____

Edit:

I got information in another post, got in touch with a local wildlife rehab person that specializes in squirrels and hopefully little buddy will get the help he needs. Ima copy the information I got and leave the post up

_____

Per /u/UnrulyPoet

> All cat-caught animals should be brought to a rehab for antibiotics otherwise they almost always die (and cat puncture wounds can visually re-seal to the point where they are not noticeable).

Discussion & Misc. Internal Process Disaster

The current process at the rescue organization is a disaster. Applications take 3 weeks to process. Applicants get discouraged. There is no follow-up. To make it worse, applicant processors are not checking to see if there was an already rejected application or if the person is on the do not adopt list.

The organization currently uses ShelterLuv.

The organization is foster based with over 300 cats in custody.

There are no data analytics or way to see applicant processing timelines.

I was thinking we could use DropBox to create files for each case.

I was also looking at Pawlytics, PawPlacer, and Buzzto the Rescue.

Discussion & Misc. Scale recommendations

The main scale at our animal shelter has gone kaput and it's time to replace it. However, we purchased this scale 11 years ago so I'd love some recommendations for a durable scale that can accommodate dogs of all sizes, from chis to big ole boofers.

Bonus points if it's durable but also light enough for me, a standard human female, to pull out from the closet where it typically will live when not in use.

Our current scale is a Tree LC-VS 400 - 38" x 20", up to 400lbs. Realistically, a similarly large platform would be perfect but this model is pretty heavy and awkward for me to move around. Plus we HAVE to be able to decon it thoroughly because we live in an area where parvo cycles hot and heavy.

Budget is flexible.

Education, Resources, & Community What are some ways we can help animals in need?

I have always had a deep love for animals, and it hurts me knowing that so many animals are abandoned or need help finding safe homes. I know that adopting or fostering an animal is not something everyone can do, but I feel like there are still ways we can make a difference. For those who have experience with animal care/rescue, what are some ways people can help animals in their communities? I’d love to hear your advice, whether it’s volunteering, donating supplies, helping strays safely, or spreading awareness about animals that need help. I want to learn more about animal rescue and find ways to make a positive difference, even if it's through small ways.

Hihi! So I'm rehabilitating this lovely fledgling, his name is Chicken Soup the Magical Cheese Wizard, but gosh, it's.. tiring.

Some days I want to pretend he's nonexistent, though I don't. He's my soul. I have bad depression, and I feel like I can never keep his hospital box clean enough, or his wound, and it's destroying me. I'm so burnt out, and although it's worth it, I haven't even been able to shower or brush my teeth properly.

I feel terribly guilty when I step outside for a break or get annoyed with his chirps.

How do I cope with this? He's in his 'teen phase', all he wants to do is explore, play and eat. It's amazing but I can't keep up.

On one hand, he's absolutely thriving. So lively and happy, but on the other, what if I make a mistake and it costs him everything, or what if his infection comes back and I genuinely can't treat it?

I've only ever had cats and insects, or birds with very minor injuries for a day.

Nobody else can take him. Tips on how to manage?

Added some pics of the boy <3

Discussion & Misc. Animal Rescue Interview

Hello everyone!

My name is Grace, and I am a college student currently taking a research writing course. For one of my assignments, I am researching the animal rescue subculture to better understand the experiences, responsibilities, and values of people involved in animal rescue. I am looking to interview someone who is actively involved in the animal rescue community. The interview would take about15–20 minutes and would consist of 8-10 open-ended questions about your experience with animal rescue.

I am flexible with how the interview is conducted and would be happy to communicate through Zoom, text, or email, depending on what is most convenient for you. If you prefer, you can remain anonymous in my assignment.

If you're interested in participating, please comment or send me a private message.

Thank you so much!

Sick/Injured Animal rescued a severely underweight dog today. looking for advice and resources :(

today, someone came into my workplace offering to sell their dog for $10. i immediately felt awful about the situation and decided to buy him with the intention of bringing him somewhere safe, as the area is not a good one and i was worried he would end up in the wrong hands.

after getting a closer look at him, i realized just how skinny he was. underneath all his fur, i can feel his ribs, spine, hips, and practically every bone. i’m worried he may be severely malnourished or even emaciated.

i immediately tried taking him to two different shelters, but one was closed and the other only accepted animals by appointment/application, i filled out the application & plan on reaching out to them tomorrow when their intake manager is there. i hadn’t anticipated not being able to surrender him the same day, so i ended up bringing him home.

he was extremely dirty, so i gave him a bath, fresh water, and some kibble. i’ve been offering small portions because i’m concerned about feeding him too much too quickly without knowing his medical history.

so far, he’s been walking normally, sniffing around, responding to affection, and eating eagerly. he had some diarrhea earlier, but his most recent stool was a little more formed. he’s currently resting indoors in a crate with blankets and water, separated from my other pets.

unfortunately, i’m not financially prepared to take on veterinary expenses for a dog i unexpectedly rescued. i understand that he needs medical attention, and i’m trying to figure out the safest way to get him that care. i’m planning to contact shelters and rescues tomorrow, but i’m also looking into emergency medical surrender options.

i’m located in south jersey, so if anyone knows of rescues, shelters, or organizations that could help with an urgent medical intake, i’d really appreciate the recommendations.

this is my first time rescuing an animal in a situation like this, and i’m honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed. i know i may not have handled everything perfectly, but i couldn’t walk away knowing he might end up in an unsafe situation.

i don’t regret helping him. i just want to make sure he gets the care he deserves. any advice or resources would mean a lot.

❕UPDATE: i got him scanned for a microchip he didn’t have one. & i got him into a shelter and they’re gonna take good care of him. it was sad giving him away he was so sweet :’( but i’m just really happy he’s gonna be okay and taken care of 🙏🏼

How do I start? / New Rescuer Nessie doesn’t quite fit the “cat” part of our cat café..(Vinnytsia, Ukraine, "Khvostyky" Cat Space)

But she fits the rescue part perfectly ❤️

Nessie is our gentle, slightly shy dog at Khvostyky in Vinnytsia, Ukraine. She lives separately from the cats, and she’s one of the little lives we’re caring for while they wait for families.

Her mum, Bella, and sister, Ryzhulia, have already found theirs. We’re so happy for them, and we hope Nessie’s turn will come too.

For now, we’re getting to know her at her own pace. She’s affectionate, but timid, and we think there’s a lot more of Nessie to discover once she feels fully comfortable.

We talk about our cats so often. It was time you met her.

You can follow Nessie’s story on Instagram, "@catcafe.me.rescue" 🐾

Found this little guy on garden with a cat nearby, had a few drops of blood flowing out, now seems fine. What should I do? My idea is to feed it until it recovers and let it out, any tips?

Sick/Injured Animal We found an injured pigeon in our garden, it doesn’t look like we will be able to get him help until tomorrow so what’s the best thing we can do until then?

Post image
19 Upvotes

It seems like the injury is to his wing and he can’t fly but obviously we aren’t sure.

There was a cat lurking around but we have him safely inside in a padded box with some water and seeds for now.

We are going to call the vets in the morning to see if they will see him.

Will it be ok to leave him inside our shed or garage for the night? We have two cats but we could shut him in one of our spare rooms if the garage or shed would be too cold.

We are in the UK and it is definitely cold at night here now but not freezing.

EDIT: we found a 24 hour vet that would take him, and East Sussex WRAS will pick animals up directly from that vets for rehabilitation 🤞

Discussion & Misc. What do people most often get wrong when trying to help animals?

I'm a design student researching how ordinary people respond when they find animals in distress. I have experience in fostering cats and caring for dogs in and around my house.

And I'm trying to understand the information gap between finding an animal and knowing what the appropriate action is.

For those involved in animal rescue:

What mistakes or misunderstandings do you see people make most often?

And:

What is the one thing you wish people knew before trying to help an animal?

I want to understand the practical problems people encounter, so I can come up with some design solutions that could help. (Feel free to suggest any ideas you have in mind, it would be much appreciated)

Real examples would be really helpful!

Thank youu!!

Education, Resources, & Community How do I cope with a difficult case?

Rescue pigeon has necrosis all over his face, cleaned it off, I think I did well.

But, I feel as if I'm doing something wrong, as if my best is grossly inadequate.

I love zoology and animal care, but this is hard. There's a solid chance he could die. How do I cope?

I feel monstrous when he cries because I clean his wound or remove necrotic bits, his squeals unsettle and sadden me. I need to know if anyone else feels this. Please.

Sick/Injured Animal How do I go about this?

Someone I know from school just posted a picture of a pile of kittens outside. They then responded with this. It sounds like their situation is bad and I want to help but do not want to scare the owner away by being judgmental. Anyone have any advice for how I can go about this?

Sick/Injured Animal Mange Coyote Transformation

Hi all, in case it's of interest, we wanted to share this incredible transformation of a coyote in our care (please remove if not allowed):

When this little guy arrived at our Ramona Wildlife Center, he was furless and covered in painful scabs caused by severe mange. But thanks to two months of care from our Project Wildlife team, he’s gone from barely looking like a coyote to looking like the fluffy little canid he was meant to be! You gotta admit, this guy’s transformation is furry impressive — and the best part? He was released earlier this month!

Sick/Injured Animal 🚨 URGENT RESCUE HELP NEEDED FOR AN INJURED CAT 🚨

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

There is a cat near my house who has a serious injury to his tail. A large portion of the flesh from his tail seems to be missing. I don’t know how this happened — it could be an accident, a bite, or some other injury. The wound is open, and the tissue/fat underneath is visible.

He needs to be rescued and taken to a vet as soon as possible. I am unable to take him myself because I have nowhere to keep him after the vet visit, and my family will not allow me to keep him at home. Even if medication is prescribed, I would not be able to provide him with proper aftercare without a safe place to keep him.

He only appears around my area occasionally, so I cannot predict exactly when or where I will see him.

📍 Location: Okhla Vihar, New Delhi — near Riaz Medical

If anyone living around Okhla Vihar or nearby can rescue him and take responsibility for his treatment, please contact me.

If I happen to see him and am able to catch him, I can try to safely hand him over to you. Same-day availability would be extremely helpful, because I cannot keep him at my house even temporarily.

If someone is nearby and can come immediately whenever I spot him, please reach out. I will do my best to catch him and coordinate with you.

Please help me rescue this cat. He really needs medical attention. 🙏
