How has your day been so far?
20
u/devildv Jun 14 '16
Crazy, a bit more than usual. You don't launch a device every day :D
We have a lot of people flying over to different cities for tomorrow's pop ups and I'm pretty sure that people like Bradon (now in Berlin) or Aaron (here with me in London) could use some good sleep :)
19
u/BradonOP Jun 14 '16
The jetlag is real.
1
u/suitofgold Jun 14 '16
Thinking about coming to the London popup tomorrow, what should we expect? Also will there be a lot of devices to be sold?

I didn't believe the leaks when they mentioned a 3000 mAh battery. Why did you 'downgrade' to less mAh (OP1: 3100, OP2: 3300)? For me, quick charging (Dash charging) does not justify it or is not a reason to settle for a smaller battery. I want to be able to use my device as much as possible, also when not around a power socket. Does the device last long enough without charging it (how much SoT are we talking about ±?), because although my Nexus 5X charges also pretty quick, I always find myself looking for a power socket just because it cannot handle some heavy usage..
102
u/carpe02 Jun 14 '16
Sometimes you can't compare products spec by spec. So many things go into determining battery life, such as processor and screen tech. 3000 mAh gets you through a day, and for heavy use Dash Charge comes in pretty handy.
I understand that you might be on the fence regarding battery, so my suggestion would be to test out Dash Charge IRL (eg. from a friend) before deciding. We've found that Dash Charge changes user behavior from charging at night to charging whenever there's a need. The Car Charger also comes in handy for those who commute.
46
u/jnsvr Jun 14 '16
That's true. I like everything about my Nexus5X (oh god, the camera is awesome), but hate the fact that I never ever last through the day as soon as I start ... well, using my phone. I don't want to be a wall hugger and am jealous when seeing some phones with 4000mAh (Huawei Mate 8). A friend of mine has that one and with low usage he still has 91% at the end of the day. I'm lucky if I still have 50% remaining with low usage right now. I suspect the same will happen with the OP3 so I'll hold off right now and see what others have to tell about it. Anyway, it looks like an awesome device and you really got me thinking about purchasing this beauty, but... Not yet :-)
3
u/mostdopeknight Jun 15 '16
Flash the new PA rom , believe me battery got better drastically, I get over 5hrs of SOT , before I use to get barely 3
2
u/jnsvr Jun 15 '16
Interesting! Yesterday I got just over 1h of SoT with only 20% remaining. It's pathetic :-)
2
u/doommaster Jun 15 '16
Huawei has it's own silicon and they are doing pretty well.
Near all new Huawei phones have exceptional battery life in my experience and it might give them a sales boost, espc. in the long run.23
u/J4CKR4BB1TSL1MS Jun 14 '16
For someone without access to Dash Charge during the day (full day of classes without charging opportunities) and uses it heavily (classes, as I said before), what do you think would be the expected amount of hours of use? And to how much would it by reduced after, say, one year?
41
u/carpe02 Jun 14 '16
A normal day of use.
For instance when we make the "a day's power in half an hour" claim, we base it on the fact that a 30min charge can get you through 7hrs+ of 2k video on medium screen brightness, which we think is a fair claim.
Battery degradation should be the same as any LiPo battery, you can probably find graphs online.
26
u/BramblexD Jun 14 '16
Is this measure based on airplane mode, or with good signal?
While optimisation does reduce the power consumption of the OP3, what stopped you from removing the camera bump for an increase in thickness? Even then, the Moto Z force has fitted in a 3500mah battery at just 7mm thickness.
I'm sure as it is aimed more at tech enthusiasts, that only a small % of the consumer base would prefer a thinner phone over increased battery capacity, regardless of how well it is optimized.1
u/JidhinGeorge Jun 17 '16
So, you just made an average term. What would have happened if the capacity is 3500mAh? Running your device through a second day is a problem? People have background running applications, voice calls, WiFi connected, browsing, camera sometimes, brightness to a higher level on sunlight. And how could we make it a whole day?
0
15
u/Gepss Jun 15 '16
Why do you say "3000 mAh gets you through a day" like this is a good thing?
A bigger battery is always better. I don't get why OEMs cannot see this..
9
u/PlanetGuy Jun 15 '16
Dash Charge is a great innovation. But there are many times you do not have access to a charger. Making the phone 1 mm thicker and putting a 3600 mAh in there would be a better option. No bump on the camera and 20% bigger battery with hardly any difference in weight and thickness.
Lenovo managed to put a 3500 mAh battery in a 7 mm thick phone that also has a 5.5 inch screen. Surly you could have put a 3600 mAh battery in a 8.3 mm thick phone. No one is going to notice that 1 mm, but they will notice the phone lasting 20% more and you would not have a bump on the camera.

While you can't compare specs for specs, fact still remains that if there was a larger battery in this device, better battery life would be achieved. I feel like most companies are using quick charge as a band aid for the issue instead of what consumers really want which is more battery life. We are willing to accept a thicker and even heavier device if that means more battery life.

When we think about Never Settle it's not about having the "biggest" everything, but to offer the best balance. We wanted to bring a great design to the OnePlus 3 without sacrificing battery life nor performance and I can assure you that the OnePlus 3 is a no-compromise device.
Specific to your question, the 3,000 mAh battery will last longer than you think: the OnePlus 3 is extremely power efficient, we not only have the 820, which consumes less than previous chipsets and offers better processing power, but also an Optic AMOLED display. With Dark Mode the 3,000mAh of the OnePlus 3 will last longer than the 3,300mAh from the OnePlus 2.
Of course, Dash Charge also helps having to worry even less about running out of juice :)
40
u/QuestionsEverythang Jun 14 '16
I think what he was really trying to ask was instead of reducing the battery and having more efficient everything else to make up for it, why not keep the battery the same size or larger and have everything else still more efficient?
Instead of trying to get better battery life, you decided to get the same. Not that that's bad, just wondering why not just go for more battery life? That's definitely not a bad thing.
→ More replies (6)95
u/Rover16 Jun 14 '16
Nah, you should have listened to MKBHD! People don't want large camera bumps and thin phones at the expense of battery life. A slightly thicker phone with a larger battery is much more appealing to most people.

u/gintoddic Jun 15 '16
There's no reason to keep putting smaller batteries based on cpu and screen performance. You can ask anyone here, we want the extra 4-6 hours rather than having a thinner phone.

Are you doing anything to improve the speed in which you release updates? Still waiting on MM with the oneplus X.
Also congratulations on the Oneplus 3, the phone looks great.

u/aaron_oneplus Jun 14 '16
We are working hard to deliver updates as fast as possible. We have been regularly doing security releases and plan on continuing to do so.
149
u/pwseo Jun 14 '16
And how about regularly informing you customers about what's being done? People who bought the OnePlus X have been abandoned, literally. No device trees, no proper bugfixes or changelogs, no updates, not even a single word from developers. "Nice job" you guys did there.
I would really like to hear someone from the ROM team speak their mind about the X. "It's about time", as you say.

Hey, wow. Pretty damn close to guess #1.
So, will we ever hear it directly from OnePlus why their very minimal ROMs seem to take much more time than very bloated ROMs (like TouchWiz) to get updated?
BTW, very thankful to hear the "Flagship Killer" moniker is dead at OnePlus. It was a silly phrase before the OnePlus One and it will be a silly phrase when you release the OnePlus Five.

Christ, I was really considering the OP3 over a Nexus 6P for my next upgrade, reading through your answers in this thread is making me question myself though. Gruff answers, side-stepping difficult questions and downright ignoring other ones which bring up valid points.
I've always heard complaints about OnePlus customer service and support that I've been willing to put down to some isolated bad experiences, if this is the attitude from the top-down though I can only imagine the front-line support will be much worse.

I don't ever contribute to this sub, so take my comment here as you will, but this is a really disappointing answer from a co-founder. At the very least, it's increased my satisfaction with my purchase of a Nexus 6p rather than wait for the OPO3. nice looking phone, but this turns me off from a company.
5
Jun 14 '16
I hope Maxis picks it up in Malaysia; that's where I picked up my OPO. I didn't appreciate the moment enough: I just walked into a brick-and-mortar store and in 10 minutes, walked out with a OnePlus One. No invites or anything.

Why didn't you use USB3(.1) on the Oneplus 3? So I assume no possibility to use a USB-C->HDMI adaptor?
2
u/MrJakk Jun 14 '16
Everything else looked good. This the only thing I wanted to make sure was there before buying. Oh well.
5
Jun 15 '16
Well, the HDMI out is out, but for the technical part of this discussion:
Aaron from the ROM team seems a little mistaken. Video out is not supported on the OP3 type-C port, but alternate modes (for DisplayPort and, by conversion, HDMI) are included in the specification for type-C, even USB 2.0 type-C.
Remember, alternate modes depend on the extra pins available in type-C connectors: that's it. Doesn't matter what the actual USB protocol is.
2
u/MrJakk Jun 15 '16
Oh. Is that so? Well that's a great clarification then. I remember watching a YouTube video with a guy from DisplayPort saying that it came with USB-C/3.0, so I guess I assumed he was correct.
To summarize what you said. USB-C (2 or 3) can have display port out, but the important thing is that the phone MFG include the needed pins
Thank you for elaborating. I saw that the HTC 10 had DisplayPort on it's spec sheet and tested it with a USB-C/HDMI adapter and it worked. It's possible I mixed up some facts in my mind since HTC 10 has USB 3.0
4
Jun 15 '16
Unless the specification has been updated since that PDF released, yup! :)
See pages 12-16 on that PDF. They specifically mention USB 2.0 with DisplayPort.
Err, to be pedantic, technically, since the pins are already part of USB type-C port, the MFG just needs to connect them to the display out on the SoC & provide appropriate driver/software support.
If they do that, then any USB type-C port can carry DisplayPort or any other Alternate Mode.
It's actually pretty ingenious: since USB type-C is reversible, there are pins on the top and bottom. But, it just needs one set of pins for USB. What about the other set? They're not getting used.....and thus the idea was born: why not use the other pins for alternate modes?
The phone, then, simply switches around the USB & alternate mode pins depending on which way you plugged in. This way, having 2x the pins, you can have 2x the data! :D Instead of 2x the pins and only using the "top" pins when connected with a "top" orientation and only using the "bottom" pins when connected with a "bottom" orientation.
No worries. Though, there is the correlation/causation here. Maybe the vendors who implement USB 3.0 are the only ones who care enough to implement Alternate Modes, too. :-/
2
u/aaron_oneplus Jun 14 '16
Sorry video out over type C is not supported. However, display mirroring via CAST or wifi display is supported.
28
u/Troll_berry_pie Jun 14 '16
What was the point implementing a USB C port without implementing the USB C PD spec again then? The OP2 I could understand as the technology had only just been released.
Do I risk damaging the OP3 if I use a high-power USB C charger such as the Macbook or an Anker?
12
u/Zephine Jun 15 '16
Do I risk damaging the OP3 if I use a high-power USB C charger such as the Macbook or an Anker?
This question needs to be answered.
2
u/verexa Jun 15 '16
Phones will only draw the power that they require.
From what has been mentioned the charging control chip for Dash Charging is within the charger, which may mean that the 4A x 5V (20W to you and me) may only be provided through OnePlus official chargers. However if the phone accepts quick charging from other chargers (820 SoC supports quick charging) it will utilise the higher-power.
Unfortunately, only OnePlus Hardware team should be able to confirm this 100% for you.
1
u/boibo Jun 15 '16
Dash is probably just a implentation of quickcharge 3.0 and will be the same faire as on HTC 10 - that is USB-A to USB-C cable and USB-A charger and the Dash (or qc3.0) will give you at max 2.2-2.4A and variated voltage - to keep the charging speed fast but the amps low enough for the USB-A port wich is limited to about 2.4A.
So no, 4A is not possible. USB-C takes 3A over 5V but this phone is probably 15-17W just like the HTC 10 or any recently released 820-based phone.
1
u/livedadevil Jun 15 '16
That's not true. USB c to spec is determined by the wall block and USB 2.0 by the phone. It's why plugging in a Chromebook charger is usually a bad idea if you have a OP2 IIRC
29
u/cezarvrabie Jun 14 '16
Are there any plans to release a Dash Charge external battery? Also, are VOOC accessories compatible with the OP3?

Will there be any third pary licensing thing for creating third party dash charger accessories? I'm wondering because your pricing on the original dash chargers is absolutely ridiculous, we're talking Apple-level pricing. 30 dollars for a car charger... really?
Also, what's the reason you didn't include a mciro-sd card reader like in the opx?
38
u/carpe02 Jun 14 '16
Congrats, you're #first!
There won't be third party Dash Charge accessories.
They are not regular chargers. Both the normal and car charging adapter has power management chips built in. It does more than a "regular power adapter", delivering several times the power a regular charger does. They're thoroughly tested for safety and quality, so please stick to official accessories for quality and safety.

So, what does it do that USB Power Delivery doesn't do (which is currently specced for charging at up to 100 W).
What benefit does OPPO/OnePlus expect to bring by fragmenting the market?
Or is it just a rebranding of Qualcomm Quick Charge
(like OPPO has previously done)?.
Edit: wait, and it's only 0-60 in 30 minutes? That's the same as QC2.0...
The specs would also indicate that it's very similar to a USB PD charger (5 V with increased amps)...

I think the reasons behind not including micro-sd card slot are pretty obvious. To mention some of them: to give the phone "premium" iphone-ish feel, to focus on other things and to cut costs. And of course to force some people to pay extra for more memory. Someone who never experienced bugginess of android will never understand the importance of external memory. My Moto X after reboot deleted everything and restored itself to original file system just like that. I'll never use a garbage without sd card slot anymore, and to anyone who'll think of shooting me with "cloud" responses - yes, I already uploaded all my backed up photos to cloud but you can't have constant fibre-speed quality network 24/h with flawless reception. Hence my next phone'll be ZTE Axon 7 (the only phone with AMOLED, sd-slot and stereo speakers I'm aware of) Besides, you don't have to pay weekly/monthly/top up the microSD card.

u/_y2b_ Jun 14 '16
Since there's no invites this time around, does that mean you have a lot of phones in stock?
63
u/devildv Jun 14 '16
The invite system was great at the beginning, when we didn't know what the demand for the devices was going to be. As you probably noticed, it took us about a year to get rid of the invites for the OnePlus One, 6-8 months to do so for the OnePlus 2 and less than 3 months for the OnePlus X. After three devices we have learned quite a lot in terms of inventory management, etcetera, so we are confident that for the OnePlus 3 we have done a good job stocking up on devices :)

u/carpe02 Jun 14 '16
Bad user experience, slow (vs UFS2.0), makes device bulkier. Apple trained people to crave this with expensive storage markups, but with 64GB of storage out of the box, we don't see the need to accept the compromises mentioned. Of course there will always be edge use cases, but for the majority of our users this is the best UX.

u/ThatEvilGuy Jun 14 '16 edited Jun 15 '16
I am disappointed you decided not to include a microSD card slot. I don't agree at all regarding a bad user experience. Galaxy S7, LG G5 and many other phones that offer great experiences offer expendable storage. microSD was, what was going to sell me on OnePlus 3.

u/Teethpasta Jun 15 '16
There is no compromise. Wow you are part of a phone company and don't know this. Many phones use the dual sim slots as either dual sim or sim plus micro SD without changing anything and micro SD cards don't slow down a phone especially if you use it for the proper purposes of storing media which many people have more than 64gbs of.

Hello, Congrats on the new phone, but as a OP2 owner I am interested in something else.
In his review of the OP3, MKBHD said that it runs Oxygen OS 3.1.1, so what I would like to know (and I'm sure that many more want to, too) is when the update will be getting to us, the OP2 owners.
Thanks
17
25
u/OliverBoj Jun 14 '16
MKBHD described the OP3 as a safe design and pretty "standard". Would you agree with this? How hard is it for a company with small profit margins such as yours to take big risks, rather than delivering precisely what the community ask for and expect?
63
u/carpe02 Jun 14 '16
Design wise, it follows the same direction we set in the beginning - a minimalist look and feel that balances soft curves (top, bottom, back curvature, etc) with hard edges (along the contour of the back of the device). In addition, it's sleekness makes it really resemble the OnePlus One. Place one side by side and check.
In terms of taking "big risks", we admire companies who do it, as it usually takes the industry multiple tries and iterations before we find a good user experience. We don't want to be first, but rather implement new technology when we feel it actually adds to the user experience.

I see OnePlus as the Apple of the Android world. It's a stock experience with a beautiful minimal design.
If someone with an Apple device asked me to recommend an Android it would be OnePlus - please continue to be design/ux focused. Some manufactures really like to put their awful design flair on things.

Any tentative date for launching the 4 GB RAM version of OnePlus 3 ?
Are you planning on launching a 5 inch screen device as successor to the OnePlus X ?

As you guys decided to retain the 3.5mm headphone jack could you be kind enough to let us know the DAC used in OnePlus 3?
Kudos on launching the 4 device by the way. Edit: phrasing.

How does optic AMOLED technology differ to regular AMOLED displays used in other phones?

We've taken Super AMOLED and added our take on contrast and color temperature, to try and bring it more true to life. In addition, we've designed its performance profile to work well when outdoors in bright conditions.

Thanks for doing the AMA :D
To the ROM/development team when do you plan to push the kernel to github?
So the 3 will be the first phone without a wait list?
