I thought this idea could be a good solution. As the title suggests. Maybe 3-5 dates announced in advance (these are not surprises). Make it in some sort of destination city at a small, accessible venue on a weekend to inspire people to fly in. Hear me out, it doesn’t need to be long, just full of good songs that real fans want to hear. Maybe a 12-15 song setlist, no drum or bass solos, no hits. Do a minimal tech setup so it’s less work, and also just a get more of a raw show. I want them to feel like they blew through and it was an easy night for them. Make the tickets on the expensive side if they can sell. I know I’d pay $80+ to see a show like this. If they’re co headlining, don’t bring the other act. Maybe just get a local opener or two, or none. I don’t care.
I don’t have any insight to the money needed to do something like this, but I’d have to imagine it’s quite possible they walk out of there with just as much money as they would playing a big venue with another headliner. Or maybe not, but again, maybe it’s easier money and it’s fan appreciation. I understand big shows are good for generating new fans, but how about put something on for the existing real ones that isn’t the cruise or 311 day.
I know a short setlist without a ton of production value might sound like it wouldn’t be worth seeing, but I would think few hundred people per show could be all it takes to make something like that possible. Maybe organize some sort of pregame/tailgate with their music playing, it would kind feel like New Orleans where every bar is playing 311 and full of fans. Set up a merch table for that. I’d be more inclined to spend money I could go put my stuff in the car before the show.
I don’t know. What do you think? Pnut, are you listening?
