AI Trained to Recognize CCW

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/researchers-train-ai-to-detect-concealed-handguns-using-wi-fi-signals-open-source-wifirenet-achieves-precision-detection-on-older-802-11a-standard-by-analyzing-how-weapons-distort-wireless-signals

It’s gonna be a brave new world, folks.

I would be very concerned about government and law enforcement using these in the same way flock cameras are employed.

Absolutely. And I guess some of us still care about privacy. What are we in a world where your location, your spending habits, your biometric data, your relationships and professional details, and even what you’re carrying are available to governments and corporations on a whim? Is that anything remotely like what human beings should expect from a life with dignity, autonomy, and privacy?

72.5 and 53.8%. I’ll bet you if you look at their test conditions they are slightly ahead of a coin flip. Which is improvement, because the last time this technology was new and in the news, it was a bit worse.

Right, which is kind of the situation with AI in general. It has plenty of limitations but little by little it gets better at what it does.

I'm sure that's for a very narrow sinister circumstances too. There's been both shirts built in with padding essentially to hide concealed carry and unique patterns that make it very difficult for a camera to detect a bulge or any sign of concealed carry. There are also holsters optimized to prevent printing.

I'd suspect as soon as the detectors get their technology mainstream it'll become obsolete almost immediately.

I recently saw a commercial for Xfinity wifi shield and I'm already creeped out.

WiFi Motion An opt-in feature, WiFi Motion uses the WiFi signal from compatible Xfinity Gateways to sense movement in your home without cameras or video recordings.

So who's working on a jammer?

So even if it does work, you still need to have SOMEONE with their own gun to remove the armed interloper.

However, under stricter localization requirements, such as pinpointing the weapon’s exact location on the carrier, precision dropped to 53.8%.

My coin flipping prediction machine has a precision of 50%.

If you read the actual paper, they achieved these results in a 100 sq ft room, covered with 4 antennas, with limited number of people and still got pretty poor detection results. It's a far cry from setting up surveillance on some random street.

The actual surveillance-heavy brave new world will just use facial recognition and cross-tab it with your licenses, purchase history, and so on.

I’m not sure why this matters if you are legally permitted to concealed carry.

I’ve seen people with off body bags that I am 90% sure have a gun in them. There are already plenty of ways to suspect that somebody is carrying. If it’s not against the law, I’m not sure what they are going to do about it.

Especially because “sensitive places” is going away in some important states.

I wonder what would happen if large numbers of people started carrying a piece of metal with equivalent mass of a handgun. I’m sure it would cause a ton of false arms to the point that the system becomes useless.

Don’t threaten me with a good time. Looks like I’m carrying a hammer with me everywhere.
