Featured Character of the Week: Nightwing(Richard Grayson)

Name: Richard John Grayson AKA Nightwing

Team Affiliations: Titans/Teen Titans, The Outsiders, The Justice League, The Batfamily

Allies: Too many to list, but notably, Bruce Wayne, Damian Wayne, Barbara Gordon, Starfire, Donna Troy and Wally West

Enemies: Blockbuster, Deathstroke the Terminator

Personality:

Dick is generally considered to be the most upbeat and positive of the Batfamily. He is frequently depicted to be making jokes both in and out of combat. Dick also develops more personal connections than his mentor, even going so far as to have proposed to two women in his life. He does however have a dark side that only Jason outdoes. When attacked personally Dick stops making jokes, he stops being nice, he just goes hunting. Dick has literally beaten the life out of the Joker, to the point that Batman had to resuscitate him.

Gear:

Dick does not carry nearly as much equipment as the others in the Bat family. His normal gear is usually:

  • Wing Dings(non-bat shaped projectiles)
  • Escrima Sticks(Two solid steel rods he fights with, they can discharge electricity)
  • Grapnel line(not used very often)
  • Bolas
  • Smoke bombs
  • Small amounts of c4
  • His suit capable of discharging massive amounts of electrity __________________________________________________________

Powers: Richard Grayson has no superpowers to speak of; however, he is the pinnacle of human athleticism in the DC universe. He is a the greatest acrobat in the world, a master martial artist, detective, and is one of the stealthiest characters in comic books. He is also one of the greatest leaders in the DCU, having led all of the teams he was on at one point or another. Richard Grayson does succeed Bruce and become Batman for a time.

Top Feats: I am including two feats that I would consider PIS for reference

  1. Breaking Titanium Alloy(Requires over 200,000 PSI to break)
  2. Hurting/Pushing Cyborg Superman
  3. Squatting his way out of an Orca's mouth
  4. Forces a retreat from Slade Wilson(Deathstroke), in single combat
  5. Beats powerful meta-human Blockbuster
  6. Breaks through a sheet of ice one handed from underwater
  7. Outreacts Bruce Wayne, and carries him while dodging automatic fire

Other Feats:

Prep/Intellect: http://imgur.com/a/RZfZ3#0

Strength: http://imgur.com/a/hv4rl

Skill: http://imgur.com/a/5TDOO#0

Speed: http://imgur.com/a/aIY59

Bonus: Is a boss

Recommended reading(as requested): I really enjoy Batman: Reborn, the other good runs would be Chuck Dixon(who wrote when he first heads to Bludhaven) and Marv Wolfman's run. Kyle Higgins deserves honorable mention, as he understands the character very well and write him very well, but was handicapped by being forced into crossover events which shit on Nightwing (Death of the Family, Court of Owls, Forever Evil etc.)

I have always liked Nightwing but I didn't realize he was such a bad ass.

Raised by professional athletes, in an environment in which juggling chainsaws is normal. Then being raised by Batman is usually a pretty solid recipe for being a boss.

A much more serious question. If Batman is considere for all intents and purposes peak human, then would Nightwing(rawr)'s agility be considered metahuman?

And is he stronger than Bruce?

  1. There are varying levels of peak-human, for instance in Marvel Captain America is more 'peak' than Black Widow. In Marvel Captain America is the hard-cap(DEM PUNS) on peak human by design. In DC its more fluid. I would call Nightwing the absolute peak for speed/agility.

  2. His legs are stronger for sure(jump height, run speed, and kick feats show this). The argument for upper-body strength comes from Bruce being able to bench 1045 lbs; however, Nightwing has one-arm lifting feats, and feats of throwing heavy objects(I have a scan of him Mario swinging a refrigerator). I would call him overall stronger than Bruce.

I've got a question, would you say Grayson is better at 1vs1 combat than Batman?

2

Well, he did beat up an evil clone of Batman one time...

Any one mind explaining the 4th scan (talking about Nightwing's suit) in the "Is a Boss" reference? I've seen it linked before but it's always confused me.

Starfire and Jason Todd are talking about how Starfire keeps a Nightwing costume. Nightwing is apparently so sexy/boss that 5 second memory new 52 Starfire still loves him(kinda).

Always remember leg day, you'll never know when you'll need to squat your way out of a giant animals mouth.

Greatest quote ever, "I don't really see how, but that doesn't answer my question."

Very nice. Didn't know most of that but now I'm interested in reading more of his stuff. Do you have any recommendations/favorites?

I LOVED The Black Mirror. It was a great story involving Dick as Batman, it was written by Scott Snyder, and drawn by Jock and Francesco Francavilla.

Highly recommended.

As for CoW:

Next week will be a special spotlight on The Winter Soldier, in honor of the movies.

Then, u/FallenWind will have a CoW on Sosuke Aizen.

You might want to mention another feat of his, in the skill category: He successfully navigated through an entire sea of DCU poontang.
