August 2012 Voting Thread

Contest theme: Flags for Universities

Very simply, all you have to do is upvote the flags you like (downvotes don't count and are considered bad form). I'm only going to be counting upvotes, and will be doing so whenever I wake up on the 20th (in theory, at least - I think this has happened maybe once).

Remember, you're voting on a good flag, not just a good image.

Names of submitters will be revealed when I tally the votes.

PLEASE remember to vote this post up so that others can see it. Thank you!

Keep the contest alive! (Sorry for the fourth grader-ness of the page.)

Aberystwyth University

http://i.imgur.com/Ki39F.png

Flag for my University - Aberystwyth. Situated on a coastal hill in Wales facing the Irish Sea, the flag seeks to geographically represent the area with an abstract cross-section of the local area. The dragon, from the crest, looks towards the campus.

A simple banner of the school's coat of arms, colours reversed in the interests of visibility.

Flag of San Jose State University

Flag design for San Jose State University. The school colors are blue and yellow and the current available flags big large hideous text. In this design, I used the school colors and the spartan helmet.

Tufts University Flag

http://i.imgur.com/r21ML.png

Charles Tufts famously said of Walnut Hill, "I will set a light upon it." Tufts' motto is Pax et Lux. The flag here represents both the dove of peace and the light of knowledge, with the curve also suggesting the hill on which Tufts is built. And I kinda like this version better than the official seal, which has the dove dive-bombing into a book.

Flag of the University of St. Andrews

http://i.imgur.com/Iso0H.png

This flag of the University of St. Andrews, in Fife, Scotland draws heavily from the university's crest. The flag also has a bit of resemblance to the flag of Scotland which bears St. Andrew's Cross.

University of Oradea (Romania)

http://i.imgur.com/2nx73h.png

The flag of the university is a stylized adaptation of the logo (http://i.imgur.com/rib3Y.png), featuring the outline of the 5-pointed Oradea Citadel. The white side represents the "blank slate" that is the fresh student, waiting to be molded by the institution of higher learning.

Harvard Flag

http://i.imgur.com/N1cIj.png

Combination of the V for Harvard's motto Veritas, with an incomplete Serpinski's Triangle (symbolizing that there is always truth left to be discovered, but the patterns of that truth may be recognizable).

This flag was taken from UT's logo. Symmetry is good stuff.

University of Delaware (Ver 2)

http://i.imgur.com/x29OG.png

Flag design for the University of Delaware. The Blue and Gold represent the official school colors, with white being a commonly used secondary color in school seals and logos along with blue. The cross is a nod to the Swedish flag where some of the first settlers of Delaware came from.

Two horizontal white bars on a field of cherry, a tribute to the current flag and lettering without using the notorious "T"

Ricardian University

http://i.imgur.com/NyNCZ.png

What if Richard II had commanded the Ricardian poets - the great English poets of the 14th century, Chaucer, Gower, Langland and the Pearl Poet - to found a university? The red-and-white chevron mixes the Chaucer and Langland family crests, the cross fleury appears on both the Gower family's and the king's arms, and the roundels represent the Pearl Poet (and the four poets). The four roundels and the three points of the chevron stand for the seven liberal arts.

A flag for S.U. with a blue S, which also stands for the Erie Canal which used to run thru town, and was the a reason for some of the colleges' development. The 13 point star is for the 13 Schools and Colleges. This is a variant with the S in the center.

Penn State University flag 1

http://i.imgur.com/29TSD.png

This flag is necessarily simple, as is the standard for Penn State symbolism. A blue keystone on a white stripe against a blue field, with the nittany lion logo in the center.

University of Heidelberg

http://i.imgur.com/q4Uc9.png

Carmine and gold are the University's colors. It's motto is Semper apertus (always open). This is represented by a stylized open gate in the centre of the flag. The gate's round form is similar to that of the entrance of the old university building.

Temple U with Cross

Another variant of a cherry and white flag incorporating the style of the Temple "T" this time using a traditional cross layout and an extended fly.

University of Siena

http://i.imgur.com/tYWD4.png

Famous for its law faculty. The flag combines the arms of Siena (white over black) with a chessboard, representing the black-and-white world of law. The balance of black and white stands for equality before the law.

Flag of Portsmouth University, Hampshire, UK

http://i.imgur.com/ENiSq.png

This flag uses the iconic Spinnaker Tower, which is synonymous with Portsmouth, and the city colours which are blue and yellow. The blue also represents the sea, and yellow, the sun; the city as it is a coastal town.

University of Notre Dame du Lac

http://i.imgur.com/jHFms.png

Blue for the two lakes on campus (St. Mary's and St Joseph's), despite being named "Our Lady of the Lake" (singular). A stylized version of the iconic Golden Dome is centered on a green field; the former representing what gives the students the demonym "domers", the latter representing the vast green space of the campus, with its innumerable quads and trees. Despite being a French school with the official colors of gold and blue, many equate Notre Dame with the Irish; the green is a nod to that (and its football heritage) too.

This design features the classic Penn State lion head logo on a triband in the shape of a keystone to represent PA.

University of Southampton

http://i.imgur.com/w9KGO.png

University of Southampton is one of the "elite" universities in the UK, and is situated near the more modern Southampton Solent University, which is seen as "inferior" by comparison (it's not, though). This flag represents this relationship with the stars with Solent having less points, and being smaller. This is overlayed on an abstract map of the area.

University of Delaware (Ver 1)

http://i.imgur.com/xPPIC.png

Flag design for the University of Delaware. The Blue and Gold represent the official school colors, with white being a commonly used secondary color in school seals and logos along with blue. The cross is a nod to the Swedish flag where some of the first settlers of Delaware came from. The stars represent the main campus and satellite campuses located in the state.
