The nobody greets,

First of: here’s the direct link to the imgur album with the correct dialogue underneath each image, in case the rest of the post is tl;dr.

As amusing as many of the user-created bootleg translations are, I feel something essential about what makes actual bootlegs like Backstroke or Hally Porter so funny is lost (in translation, you could say) when the poor translation is deliberate, rather than the result of a pirate with limited or no knowledge of English trying his darnedest to translate what he thinks is being said.

Therefore I’ve been scouring eBay recently for authentic bootleg (a bit of an oxymoron, I know) DVDs, and have acquired a few with hilariously mistranslated subtitles, including the complete version of Hally Porter (yes, this one). I am planning on posting a selection of screens from each film as well as uploading the subtitles as SRT, so anyone with a copy of the films can watch with the bootleg subtitles, although there’s no guarantee they will sync properly with other versions of the films.

So, onto bootleg Red Dragon. The cover already has bootleg written all over it, with nonsensical phrases and typical engrish misspellings. The root menu is fairly normal apart from having the theme song of The Terminator playing in the background. Guess the pirate wanted to inject a bit of his own creative vision to the DVD.

The subtitles are not as batshit insane as say Backstroke or Hally Porter, but they have plenty of engrish nonsense and often good potential for memes. The subtitles often correspond to what is being said on-screen, only worded differently or misspelled. Other times it’s apparent the bootlegger has translated what he thinks is being said, but in a way that sort of makes sense in context to the scene or situation. And other times again they are complete nonsense where the pirate must have just made some wild guesses, leading to hilarity for the rest of us.

Oh, also the end credits are from Men in Black 2, for some reason.

Here’s the link to the subtitle file in SRT format

It’s synced to this particular bootleg version of the film, but I tried it with a Blu-Ray version of Red Dragon in VLC and subtitle delay set to 7300ms, which synced the subtitles quite perfectly.

Hopefully some dank memes can be created with this.

Spread all over the place, the bootlegs.

You have a copy of Hally Porter? I've been wanting to see those subtitles in full since I first saw that GIF of the highlights. That will #start a wonderful thign.

Indeed I do, going to upload the subtitles for sure. Actually want to upload the entire movie, but not sure where that could be done where it wouldn't get immediately copyright-struck, except torrents I guess. I also have bootleg copies (with accompanying hilarious subtitles) of Phone Booth (which has subtitles on the level of Backstroke), X-Men: First Class and Chicago.

I feel a similar way to what you described- although I love when people make their own bootlegs and some truly hilarious lines were created that way, they don't feel the way that Backstroke does, but I don't blame the creators for it. Over the past few months I've been bootlegging the 2012 Avengers movie and I found that modern translation software has just...gotten too good at its job. Today's google translate is faaaar too accurate, so I had to scour the internet in search of older software, but those older tools, which are suspected to have played a role in the original Backstroke, are riddled with malware.

So, I work with multiple translation tools, but many of the lines I have to "correct" (read:mess up) myself. I think I have an advantage in that I am a non-native English speaker so I can look at mistakes that I used to make, by watching Backstroke so much I can predict how to mess up the word order, what I should put in/ommit, what words to use, I also begun reading up on Chinese grammar and syntax to further enhance my mistranslation process and while I got some absolutely hilarious stuff doing it that way, it's tedious and well, it's still not close to Backstroke, sadly.

I never thought I would mourn those truly awful google translations, but I think by making those tools so accurate we also lost something beautiful.

Haha, yes, proper engrish is like a lost art form these days.

Kingsoft 2002 appears to be what created Backstroke.

Really you need a burner computer dedicated to translations, and then email the whole file, rinse and repeat until having to re-install the OS.

It is difficult to write in English. Here is some of my attempt to write out the wedding scene from Napoleon Explosive. It's almost there, not quite.

A slight correction with the "professional" pirate copies. They always translate the movie first into their native tongue (usually students with some basic English skills) and then for some reason use machine translation to get it to English

I have quite a few golden DVDs of Korean and Chinese movies that are obviously done this way and it is gold, especially for names

Please share them with us. If they are good, people might even want to dub them.

“Hello, I am Bob.”

"Specifl Featuaes"

I love when bootlegs just get a few letters wrong like that. Like they were transcribing it from sloppy handwriting or something.

"imporsible", "culcalating", "restranrant", "unnessery", "chousers"

Some look like the bootleggers just wrote down the words how they heard them, "restranrant" and "chousers" look closer to the actual pronunciation than the correct spelling does.

Also, our backstrokian "lemon avenue" (landing strip -> lemon street) is a prime example of this.

Oh yeah, mishearing the words entirely is funny, but I especially love text that is almost coherent but riddled with typos. Like the "Moot the Griffins" blurb on a bootleg Family Guy disc.

Just for fun, we may be dubbing at least the three lead characters at some point in the next few months.

Myself (Gold) as Will Graham (Gram)

BenjaminNorman Pierce (The D) as Hannibal Lecter (Bob.) (Ben: "I'm in.")

Ratio Tile as Faxduluohy Caremax (Francis Dolarhyde) (Jeremy: "I'm definitely in.")

I'm thinking limit ourselves to 3 takes each, then put it on the shelf- ie Soundcloud- for when and if there is interest in editing it.

Haha, excellent, looking forward to hearing it. Good to see that some of the original Backstroke cast are still around and interested in bootlegs.

I was aware you worked on the Backstroke dub, but not that you did the voice for Gold as well. Today is your day - your meeting celebrates for a day of the honour.

This is beautiful. 3 panels in we find "And we find that you can create a lie in the bottom of your heart." Already some accidental poetry there.

I a hope is you knowing about the Star War original Fourth Gathers from somewhere in South Asia, originally screencapped many years ago on what was even then a defunct website. I did grab them for safe keeping, and was hoping to one day interest some of the Fourth Gathers folks in doing them as a one-off. But for now, there is my Backstroke Reaction Supercut which is growing to 4 hours long involving over 50 reactors, and once that's done, back to the what was at the time the 2nd or 3rd Authentic Bootleg Napoleon Explosive (Napoleon Dynamite)

https://www.reddit.com/r/NapoleonsExplosive/

which is about half recorded, but put on hold due to the uptick in views on Backstroke making me want to complete the Reaction Video.

So this would be the fourth full authentic movie? Whether we could make it into a dub depends on interest, but there is potential.
