Honestly, I think Knicks fans and the media need to stop treating last season's championship like it guarantees this team a free pass. Winning it all was incredible, and nobody should forget what this group accomplished, but that doesn't mean we should ignore poor performances just because they're the defending champions.
What I respect about Brunson calling for harsher criticism is that it shows he understands the expectations that come with winning in New York. This isn't a team that's supposed to be satisfied with what it accomplished last season. The goal is to keep winning, and that means being honest when things aren't working.
At the same time, there's a difference between holding players accountable and panicking over every loss. Criticism should be about actual basketball problems, not turning every bad quarter into a reason to tear the entire roster apart.
The championship should raise the standard, not lower it.
I want the Knicks to be confident enough to know what they're capable of, but hungry enough to understand that nobody owes them another title. Last season is proof they can do it. Now they have to prove they can maintain that level.

Honestly, I think Knicks fans sometimes get so caught up in what KAT doesn't do perfectly that we forget how much he brings to this team when he's playing aggressively.
A big who can score efficiently, stretch the floor, and dominate the glass is not easy to replace. When Towns is controlling the rebounds and forcing defenses to respect him offensively, he gives the Knicks a dimension that makes the entire team harder to guard.
Obviously, one huge stat line doesn't erase his defensive inconsistencies or every frustrating decision he makes. But I don't think the answer is constantly questioning whether he belongs here every time he has a rough stretch. The real question is how we get the most out of his strengths while building a team that can cover his weaknesses.
You don't trade away a player's unique strengths just because he isn't perfect at everything. You build around those strengths intelligently.
If KAT is giving us 27 points and 20 rebounds, that's exactly the kind of impact we need to capitalize on. Brunson and the rest of the roster benefit when opposing defenses have to account for another major offensive threat and the Knicks control the boards.
I'm not saying he's untouchable, but I am saying that replacing his production and versatility would be much harder than some people make it sound.
