I can't really speak about the west but in terms of Japanese releases, it's definitely declining. This year has been really weak overall and the previous year wasn't particularly great either. Lots of months without any noteworthy releases.

Soshage are definetly are part of the problem because it seems like tons of companies try to get in on that market, even though it's already oversaturated.

It depends on how you're looking at it. Quality? Maybe, but that's certainly subjective. Quantity? I think we've been getting a pretty good number of releases, and there are probably more official localization groups active now than there ever were before. In fact, sometimes I wonder there are too many groups competing for a slice of a pie that hasn't really grown. I have to wonder if it's sustainable.

Unfortunately, there are less and less strong plot-driven VNs coming out every year. My to read VNs list is becoming shorter for a long time already, since I finish good old VNs and new... just don't come out. It's god damn concerning. If this tendency continues, I'll have absolutely nothing to read 2-4 years later.

Well, I guess I'll just stick to Japanese literature one day. Not like it's a bad thing.

cringe thread with multiple oelvn posters and highest upvote post talking about r07 being super big brand (lmao) despite having enough japanese knowledge to be able to check egs/twitter and see what games are on topic right now.

nukitashi 2 got released this year, and it did better job than good amount of games when it comes to reaching new audiences. arguably one of the most important releases of recent years.

sakura moyu, only game that managed to get a 90 median in egs with good amount of votes since sakura no uta.

aonatsuline, another great game that's debut work of one of giga's inhouse scripters/subwriters about adolescence drama.

and to end the year with a bang, musicus will be released on 12/20 to wake up all the eroge boomers on twitter.

there are also couple games like sorcress alive, missing x link, pieces, tsukikana that i haven't read myself but they made a buzz on twitter. (someone even made a tweet recently saying "if you haven't played these games cut with your eroge is dying bullshit" in japanese)

is it declining? yes. is it dying? who fucking knows, instead of saying dumb things like "no plot heavy vns are being made (lmfao) only moege/nukige" in this thread go read some instead

ps fuck reddit formatting

Not too concerned with the state of eroge going forward, I still find a fair amount of things I want to read each year and having fun discovering newer companies/authors to follow. Not a big fan of the "single heroine" trend that seems to be about making a quick buck instead of a meaningful relationship.

Fuck soshage though zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Not too worried. There's still a fair amount of engaging stuff coming out. I think that we might place too much value in the fantastic eroges of old, because it's not like the eroge industry has ever been one that was pumping out classic groundbreaking games one after another. There's still great original stuff coming out. Just that there's a bunch of crap in between. But sifting through the crap is much easier with VNs than it is with something like anime.

There are still a few great games being released every year so it's hard to say its close to dying or anything similar. Anyway the backlog its so big that even if it does I'm pretty sure I'd have titles to keep reading for decades so either way I'm not worried. The english TL scene looks like a big meme tho, but kickstarters will keep it afloat, probably.

I just want more visual novels to play on my console(Switch, PS4 etc).

I dont see many super plot heavy VNs being made anymore outside super big brands like Ryuukishi and the Uchikoshi alliance

As we can tell with the other "kamiges" (that meme is dum btw) they just dont sell well despite their supposed quality. A lot of the ones people wanted have already been translated

With all the bankrupt/closings it does seem like its harder than ever to be a visual novel company

With Japans thing to play it safe they will likely stick to usual romance eroge or nukige since those apparently sell the easiest

And places like Type Moon and Nitro+ can just use mobages and anime

Yeah its such a shame that everyone is working on moege nowadays, like Black Sheep Town or SakuToki or Suicide Fence. Or the upcoming stuff N+ is working on for their twentieth. Or KnS 3. Or Type-Moon probably working on remaking Tsukihime (lol). It's also a shame that Rance 10 didn't just come out. Or Nukitashi 2. Or Ryuusei World Actor.

Really just a shame that everything is moe.
