News WSU News Roundup - 05 October 2026

Hi everyone! I thought it would be a good idea to try out a Western Sydney University news roundup that covers WSU and other related Western Sydney news that might be interesting, excluding the random stuff that clutters newsletters. I’ll occasionally add some personal commentary only for context.

I’m usually keeping up with the news anyway so I thought I would post something when there’s enough news to justify one. The latest one will likely be pinned until it becomes outdated. If you want anything else included let me know in the comments!

WSU news 🏫

Whitlam Library Transformation
The Whitlam Library at Parramatta South campus is getting a noticeable renovation. It’s getting new recording and technology rooms, a new cafe, an indigenous garden, the return of bookshelves, and a more modern look. This was announced just recently and construction is set to begin at the end of this year, with the library reopening around early 2027. Thankfully, library services and study spaces will remain open during the majority of this time. If you want to provide feedback before it opens, click the survey link in the email sent to you.

Times Higher Education Ranking 2027
WSU ranked 301-325th in the THE, unchanged from last year. This followed a 30 rank increase to 370 earlier this year in the QS ranking. Their goal is to achieve top 250 in both the THE and QS rankings by 2030. They are on track for THE, but their goals for QS seem a bit ambitious at the moment.

Around Our Campuses 📍

More Student Accomodation Planned
Along the Parramatta Metro precinct, a contract to build 500 student accomodation units, alongside 470 build to rent apartments and a new hotel, has been awarded. This is still in its planning phase.
Source

Parramatta North Expansion Proposed
WSU and Walker Corporation wants to build 2000 homes right on the North Parramatta campus, which will include shops, pathways, and university buildings. This would help both North and South Parramatta campuses feel more integrated into the local community, rather than isolated within the Rydalmere industrial district. It’s currently in planning because Parra Council is concerned about infrastructure and increased density.

Growth Planned Around Kingswood & Werrington
The NSW government is progressing with plans to rezone 99 hectares of under-used WSU land at Werrington, which will create up to 1500 homes and lead to 1000 ongoing jobs. Retail, commerical, and community spaces will be built alongside a new local centre. This is an initial step in Penrith Council's recent and broader Kingswood-Werrington Structure Plan, focussing on WSU, Nepean Hospital, and TAFE NSW as anchor institutions.

Powerhouse Parramatta Opening
The new Parramatta Museum is opening on 7 November 2026. Within walking distance of the Parramatta City campus, the new museum will have a dedicated WSU forum section, alongside other exhibitions showcasing talent from WSU. General admission is free, and special events and exhibitions might be ticketed separately.

Student Life & Opportunities 🧑‍🎓

2027 Scholarships Ongoing
Vice Chancellors Leadership and Asylum Seeker scholarship applications close 17 November 2026, while Indigenous, humanitarian, and equity scholarships will close 5 February 2027.

Transport & Infrastructure 🚆

Southwest Metro Close To Opening
The long awaited metro from Sydenham to Bankstown is close to opening, with the 10 new stations being complete as of 21 September. There is currently not a planned opening date. The Bankstown metro station is a 3-5 minute walk from the Bankstown campus, and is one of the many Bankstown developments like the planned hospital that will transform the area surrounding the campus.

New Bus Links To Campuses
Recent service changes have been added, or improved connections around Kingswood, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Bankstown campuses, including new connections to Western Sydney International Airport. As these bus routes often change, I would recommend checking Google maps or TransportForNSW if you are interested.

Western Sydney International Airport
The new airport opens October 25 2026, with Jetstar, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines subsequently beginning flights before the end of the year. The new airport will provide partnerships, job and study opportunities, among other collaborations with WSU.

Quick Updates 📢

Switch to Okta Verify
WSU is switching from Microsoft Authenticator to Okta Verify and passkeys. Check your email to switch over to Okta Verify before 7 October. I’ve found the new system to be much quicker than the old one.

Student Feedback Forms Sent
Check your email to provide feedback on your individual subjects this Spring semester. The surveys close on the 26 November 2026.

Moderator Announcement Mod Reminder: Keep It Respectful and On Topic

Hi everyone,

Quick reminder from the mod team.

Keep discussions respectful and on topic.

Disagree with posts, criticise WSU, vent if you need to, that’s all fine.

Just don’t turn normal threads into personal digs, baiting, racism or dogpiling.

We get that people can be blunt sometimes. That’s normal but there’s a difference between being blunt and making it personal.

A question that seems obvious to you might not be obvious to someone else. Help properly or move on.

This is a university subreddit. Some of us could literally be walking past each other on campus, so remember there’s a real person behind the post.

No one should have their experience here ruined because they asked a question, needed advice, or wanted to vent.

Comments like “stop whinging”, “welcome to adult life” or other personal digs don’t add anything and will be removed.

Also, don’t turn mod notes or removals into another argument under the post. A mod note is there to keep the thread on track, not restart the fight.

Questions regarding removals can go through modmail. Continuing the same behaviour after a warning, baiting mods, or arguing in the thread may lead to comment locks, removals, temporary bans, or subreddit restrictions.

Keep it respectful.

Question 2025 Dean's List

Are they not doing the Dean's Merit List anymore? Or are they so slack that 2026 is nearly over and they still haven't done it?! Wish our assignment due dates were this flexible. It's always been out around Aug.

Question Anyone here dealt with WSU Disability Services before?

Just curious what people’s experiences have actually been like.

Things like changing advisers, long gaps between support, follow-ups not happening, getting adjustments sorted, communication with lecturers, or being sent between different areas of the university.

Good experiences are welcome too. Mainly trying to work out whether some of the issues I ran into were just my experience or something other students have dealt with as well.

Feel free to comment or message me privately. No need to send student IDs, medical documents or anything personal.

Nothing will be shared elsewhere without permission.

What’s one thing they handled well for you, or one thing you wish they’d handled differently?

Course / Unit inquiry about majors within a bachelor of arts

Hello all!

I’ll be starting my studies at WSU next year and am planning to double major in Creative Writing and Philosophy with a minor in English.

I’ve looked into USyd and UNSW, but found their undergraduate programs either inadequate for my specific combo or a bit too traditional. WSU seems like a much better fit for what I want to do!

I’d love to know:

  • What is the current student experience like within these specific majors/minors?
  • How is the general culture and environment surrounding the humanities at the campus?

Long-term, I’m also hoping to get acquainted with the Writing and Society Research Centre by doing a coursework Masters before eventually transitioning into an MRes. If anyone has taken a similar pathway or worked with the Centre, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how it's been.

Thanks in advance!

Accomodation For those who have lived in a gender-mixed apartment, what was your experience like?

Hi everyone, I've recevied invitation from Parramatta South Village to live in a gender-mixed apartment (I'm a female) and would love to hear from poeple who've had experience.

I've never lived in one before, and I have my own expectations and possibly some biases about what it might be like. I wanna hear about people's actual experiences before making assumptions and making a decision.

For those who've lived with housemates of different genders, I'd love to know:

- What was your overall experience like? Like was it better or didn't meet your expectation?

- Did you find that gender made much of a difference, or did it depend more on the housemates themselves as individuals?

I'm interested in hearing both positive and negative experiences to be prepared, so please feel free to share the good, bad, and also the unexpected! I'd really appreciate your time and insights. Thank you!

Question haven't recieved any assessment marks all semester - who can i contact other than the subject coodinator?

to be very brief, two of the assessments we've submitted over a month ago still haven't been marked. the 3rd assessment was submitted under 3 weeks ago, so the whole semester we've gotten zero marks back/feedback.

the tutors are terrible in responding to the discussion board/emails, and the whole class is just unprofessional when it comes to organising information/responding to inquiries online imo. i didn't get a chance to talk to the subject coodinator irl either.

i've sent an email on friday to the subject coodinator, and i understand that your supposed to wait 72h so i will wait. looks like they won't respond though as i've sent another email before and nothing.

i wanted to send a 'friendly reminder email/follow up email' and CC someone who is potentially able to help out with the issue as well. in the subject outline it says it's supposed to be a turn-around time of 3 weeks, and it's been well over that time. subject outline doesn't mention anyone who is the coodinator of arts either.

if it becomes another 3 days, then i was hoping to email someone higher than the subject coodinator to figure it out. i just think that it's ridiculous to get zero feedback/marks on assessments for the entire semester, and we have a final exam online as well.

i've had like 4 other people on the discussion board asking when are the marks due, so it's definetly not just a personal issue.

one of the tutors said "it's been marked, let me check with the *subject coodinator* why you guys can't view it". this was like 2 weeks ago, and 3 people have followed up saying where is it.

i have a feeling that they haven't even marked it yet because one of our deadlines got pushed back 5 days because the teachers we're sick and they "needed time to catch up on marking" to quote

it's for an arts degree

edit: this message isn't actually brief like i originally intended lol

update: i got a reply from the one of the tutors who seems somewhat tech savvy compared to the other two and they said that (the teacher) is 'working on it and should be available soon' lmao ok you said that 2 weeks ago...

Accomodation Campbelltown dorms

Applications for 2027 intake just opened today and I tried to apply but am struggling to find any available rooms at the moment and am being put on a waitlist. Is this just a glitch for me or did the rooms already run out that fast? If so how likely is it for me to get off the waitlist?

Question International to Domestic student

Hi! I'm an international Filipino student and received my offer for Bachelor of Psychology with scholarship (10,000aud off annually) two weeks ago, set to start Autumn 2027. I'll be travelling to Sydney on a 485 visa which makes my status an international student while my father's application for permanent residency for us is being processed. Has anyone been in the same situation? Who do I contact when my status changes 🥲? Just been really anxious about this haha

In addition, i'd like to ask how things are for psychology students. Is it difficult and will I still have a social life during my degree 😆?

If yes, I'd like to also ask if there's a performing arts club, as I really enjoy performing and music (having performed abroad, professionally trained, and joined several events and singing competitions.)

Thank you in advance to anyone taking the time to answer my questions 🥹

Question Impact of changing my degree major?

I'm enrolled in MBA (post-grad) and am on an international student visa. I want to change my major (which i can do via MySR) but I'm not sure of the implications of it on my visa/degree (though my major isn't mentioned on my visa in the first place)

I tried talking it out with the head of MBA multiple times but they've been unresponsive and everyone directs me to them but I genuinely can't reach to them.

If anyone can just help me with their experience, I'm confident I can change it (the major) myself online.

Postgraduate How do I find out how many hours a course will take and when the classes run?

Hi everyone! I’m considering signing up for a Graduate Diploma in Migration Law at Western but I’m having trouble understanding the number of hours I will need to attend class and also how much time I will need to study at home outside of classes too? I just want to know if it’s realistic for me to try and do this course part time while I’m working. I’d called the university hotline about a month ago but they didn’t know the timetable hours..

Transport & Parking are parking fines put on cars physically only or should i be checking my student records continually?

i forgot to put out my parking permit, dumb ik lmao. i always forget cause i bought the annual pass and just leave it in the glove box

there was no ticket on my car but i'd imagine that they wouldn't just rely on physical tickets to follow up if someone's been fined?

maybe i got lucky this time

Question Respect Matters?

Hello, I have been assigned the respect matters training, however none of my uni friends have been assigned.

Am I being targeted or does everyone actually have to do it?

Thanks!
