One of the most interesting aspects of The walking Dead and other post-apocalypse TV series or movies is the attention paid through the most basic of survival needs, food, as well as taking care of a group through division of labor.. surviving through division of labor and scavenging for food..
So let's take a look at some examples of this from The walking Dead as well as maybe some other post-apocalyptic series and movies.
I think the best example of post-apocalypse food scavenging in The walking Dead is the first episode of season 3 where the group forces their way into a house and starts looking around for food, Daryl kills a owl begins to prepare it to cook, and Carl finds a couple cans of dog food, and he takes out his can opener and starts opening one, and Rick comes over takes a look at it, sees that it's dog food, and throws it into the fireplace.. the rest of the group looks on in silence but there seems to be a kind of acknowledgment that they would have eaten that that can of dog food too.. but that's a good reality based example of scavenging in TWD. Another example is them eating dogs. Although that's technically hunting.. and then we have an example in one of the episodes in season 1, where Shane tell Lori that she will be looking for some frog legs after that last can of beans is gone okay so they eat canned food but what about some dry beans and rice? Okay what else do we have to talk about with regard to scavenging food? Once they get on the farm and season 2 they live off the land there, that live off the chickens and crops and so forth. in season 3 we have the division of the pantry in the prison.. so that's a type of scavenging.. what else? Once they get into Alexandria, they do make some scavenging runs but it seems to be mostly weapons.
If you ask me the king of the scavenging post-apocalyptic TV shows was the 1975 BBC TV show called survivors.. there are many examples of scavenging from that show. .. scavenging food is a major plot point in several TV series.. perhaps the best example from that one is in the fourth episode gone away when the group of Abby Gregg and Jenny are scavenging food from a store and the local group comes in with guns and tries to force them out..
Also one of the interesting survival aspects of TWD and other similar series is the division of labor among a group. This has more focus than the mere scavenging of food.. in season 1 while the women are watching the clothes, they questioned the division of labor, questioning whether Ed (the bull) has anything to do but smoke cigarettes... They soon get their comeuppance.. but then again so does Ed..
And then we have season 2 where division of labor is a major aspect of the plot..
And all the way down the line including season 3 and most especially season 5, division of labor and assignment of jobs is a major aspect of the plot.. even in season 7 and 8, we see that assignment of a job for Eugene with the saviors is a major plot point...
I'm sure there are many other examples that I've missed..
