Just finished the show and I have some thoughts...

i just finished the show, rewatched season 7 (since i didn't remember anything from it) before starting the final season, so both seasons are still pretty fresh in my mind. to start off, the neighborhood is in my top 3 favorite sitcoms, and i actually stumbled upon a random season 1 episode airing on tv back in 2022, loved it, and decided to start watching the whole thing from the pilot.

however, i started noticing more and more things as the seasons went on, and i wasn't really satisfied with the series finale. i wanted to share some of my thoughts on the show and how i felt about the ending.

idk at what point you guys started noticing a decline in quality, but season 4 was the last season i consider peak the neighborhood. i'm not gonna say it feels like a completely different show after that, but idk, i just noticed it wasn't quite at the same level anymore. for example, i feel like they stopped doing some of the things they used to, like making more suggestive jokes (like the one with calvin and tina and the paddle, dave and calvin shaking ass in the painting episode, hell, even just max greenfield shirtless, which isn't exactly the most adult thing in the world, but we haven't gotten that anymore either). the humor also became more pg, and the episodes felt less memorable. i'm not gonna sit here and say the newer episodes are bad because i think that comes down to personal preference, but what i will say is that from season 1 to season 4, the season premieres were always super memorable. season 1 had the pilot, season 2 had the second neighborhood bbq after the johnsons moved in, season 3 had the protest episode, and season 4 had the one where dave finds out he's cousins with calvin.

two other things i've noticed are that the johnsons have basically become the b-plot while the butlers get most of the focus. i love the butlers, but i don't need every single episode to revolve around them. obviously, there are one or two episodes in the more recent seasons that give the johnsons some attention, but i honestly can't think of any off the top of my head rn.

what bothers me the most, though, is how the writing has treated dave in the newer seasons. he's basically become comic relief who says something that only he finds hilarious, embarrasses himself, and then the laugh track kicks in. not a fan of that. that's pretty much all he is now, and i miss when dave was just the nice guy who sometimes didn't realize he was trying too hard, while still being a respected ex-military guy. the way he's been handled in the last few seasons has made me appreciate the version of dave who gave people life lessons and actually helped resolve the conflicts in an episode so much more. the camping episode and the stadium episode are two that immediately come to mind when i think about how much more three-dimensional he used to be.

lastly, i wanna talk about the series finale. let me just get this out of the way: what a bad episode. the worst part is that i clicked on it without realizing it was the finale, so when i realized there were no more episodes left, i was genuinely in shock. like, THIS is how they chose to end the show???

before i get into why i didn't like the ending, i wanna make it clear that i haven't read any reviews or seen anyone else's opinions on it, so i have no idea where the fandom stands on this finale.

the ending is basically an arc that starts a few episodes earlier, with dave wanting them to move back to kalamazoo. honestly, when the finale started and immediately focused on him, i almost got jump-scared because i'm so used to the episodes focusing on the butlers. seeing an episode start with the johnsons dealing with a dilemma without the butlers even being there felt so weird. my brain immediately went, "something is off," before i even realized it was because the johnsons were actually getting the spotlight for once (which is quickly taken away from them).

at that moment, i felt so awful. you guys have no idea. like, the fact that an episode starting with the johnsons having a dilemma to work through and actually being the main focus feels strange to me now is genuinely sad.

i've already accepted that this is just drama created for the final few episodes to set up the johnsons moving away and wrap up the series, but why? why do they need to leave? why is it that when the johnsons finally get the spotlight, it's to set up them moving away and end the show like this? it feels like they realized they needed an emotional moment for the finale, someone suggested, "what if the johnsons moved away?" and they just went with it and wrote the whole thing around that idea. it doesn't feel like they actually sat down together and came up with several different ideas for how to end the show in a satisfying way.

Hot take. Tina is not that good

She crosses boundries all the time. Alot of time she only hears what she wants to hear. IMO she only wanted to sell the pitstop for the money. SHE PLACED A BUG IN MARTY'S HOUSE. crossed many line with daphne. the list goes on tbh

Discussion Dave's mom's first ever episode

Whenever Paula was first introduced to the series, Dave told his mom that she was not being right and told her to shut up. I felt like the episode labelled Dave as disrespectful, even though his mom said way worse things.

Question Anyone else feels like Dave got flanderized?

I'm on season 7 rn and Dave’s entire personality is basically just being awkwardly deadpan and making socially tone-deaf jokes. Not that he didn’t have his own sense of humor in season 1, but by season 7, he’s become that one person who opens his mouth to say something only he finds funny, and that’s pretty much all his character is now.

I know they only did this to get easy laughs out of the laugh track, but it makes me sad to see such a complex character reduced to comic relief and a mood killer.

Discussion About Courtney

Guys, I'm watching season 7 now, but is it just me, or have the characters' personalities all revolved around Courtney and her daughter? Tina and Gemma aren't the same friends I knew at the beginning, and Dave seems to have become a secondary character. I thought Grover was funny, but it seems that from season 6 onwards he only appears to remind us that Gemma and Dave has a son. The same thing with Malcolm, but he's only supposed to be the uncle, And the minor characters we knew seem to have been thrown in the trash. I also think Courtney's personality is very poorly developed, to the point that it's kind of annoying, So far, everything has been related to her pregnancy and childbirth, she doesn't have any other traits?

Discussion Neecee and Marty breakup story line? Plot holes

I definitely thought that break up was short lived since it came about that Marty wanted kids and neecee did not, I feel that should have been a conversation and maybe another episode.
Not leaving it on a cliff hanger “hey we should talk” and then the break up the next show after not even giving the viewers a chance to see how that conversation happened?

Yes I know it’s a sitcom but I feel they should’ve included it and not just making it feel rushed

Awesome show

I finished it today and I have to say it was a great show. People say that it was an ok show and it's something you watch with your mind turned off but I loved it and it has to be one of the best shows I have watched. The ending was a bit rushed but I like it that they didn't leave it on "they lived happily ever after" maybe one day we'll get to see kalamazoo from the johnsons' perspectives but for now I guess that the end of this journey

Question hulu dropping the neighborhood tonight?

i had seen some clips of the neighborhood on youtube shorts, thought it was funny. i also loved 2 broke girls (gemma’s actor plays caroline), so i decided id start watching it about a week ago. its been saying “expiring 2 days”, etc. now says expiring today. i’m assuming it’s actually leaving hulu tonight? sucks bc i had really started to get into it. i know sometimes shows say they’re expiring when they’re not really, and i believe the neighborhood just recently ended so it seems weird but i think it’s really leaving 💔 does anyone have information about this?

edit: yep, they dropped it. was watching an episode and they let me finish it, but then i got an error message and the next one wouldn’t play, it’s gone 💔 12:28am

Shitpost Tina is so annoying Spoiler

Tina's character by the end has taken a complete 360 for the worse. In the initial seasons she was my favorite because she was very real, family oriented and very sassy. But after Courtney and the grandkids came into picture, she was downright mean and nasty. This was not even slightly overbearing, it was straight up taking over Marty and Courtney's life. Courtney also needed to step up and grow a spine, which she sadly didn't till the end.

Many times she has crossed lines, it's discussed and that's that. But the whole thing again starts in the very next episode.

I personally didn't like the way Sadie spoke to her initially, but Tina was also being too much - Malcom should be the one to take the decision of where he wants to be - even if it's her birthday.

Tbh I was initially very excited with the new grandkids storyline but slowly it became way too unbearable to watch.

I don’t remember Grover

So I watched this when it first came out, can’t remember if it was the full season or not but eventually I stopped. This year I started seeing clips of it so I decided to check it back, I did not remember them having a child at all! Like I remember the episodes but not Grover. It’s so weird it has me feeling crazy like was there a version without him or was the character so useless I forgot or the actor so bad? It’s crazy to forget a whole main character especially when I remember everyone else.

Tina Dumping Wine on Marty’s Signed Star Trek Shirt Was FOUL

How did y’all feel when Tina dumped wine all over Marty’s Star Trek shirt after he had just gotten it signed? I would’ve been PISSED. Like, come on, that wasn’t just some random shirt anymore.

Discussion The Neighborhood had so much untapped potential

I really enjoyed The Neighborhood, and honestly, I wish the show could have continued. One thing I always felt, though, was that the writers could have leaned even harder into the actual “neighborhood” aspect of the show.

The yardecue episodes were a perfect example of what I mean. Getting everyone together, having different personalities and generations interacting, and letting the neighborhood itself become part of the story was some of the best stuff the show did.

I also think Calvin being a mechanic could have created some great neighborhood stories. Imagine Calvin trying to do something nice for people by fixing their cars. At first, he helps one neighbor out. Then another person asks. Before long, people are literally dropping their cars off in front of Calvin's house expecting free repairs. 😂 Calvin eventually has to put his foot down and tell everyone, in true Calvin fashion, that he is NOT running a neighborhood auto shop.

Or Gemma and Tina could have teamed up more often to bring the neighborhood kids together for activities..sports, arts and crafts, community projects, mentoring, maybe even getting some of the parents involved. That could have created some really funny situations while also giving the show opportunities for those more heartfelt, teachable moments it was good at.

And that's really what I think the show had going for it: there were so many possibilities in the premise. You had Calvin and Dave, Gemma and Tina, the Butlers, the Johnsons, the neighborhood kids, the older generation, the different personalities and backgrounds all living right next to each other.

I feel like the show could have done so much more with the neighborhood as an actual character in the series. Block parties, cookouts, neighborhood projects, kids getting into trouble, neighbors needing favors, local businesses, community rivalries, holidays, helping someone through a difficult situation...

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I really think the show had a lot of life left in it. I would've loved to see the writers lean into the community aspect even more.

Friendship dynamic

Just started the show and I need to know. Is Marty and Malcom friendship with Grover normal? Would almost thirty year olds hang out with 10 year old in real life. Is this a male thing?

Gemma and Tina

Hi guys. New watcher here! I'm on season 7 now and been loving watching this. But one thing is kinda annoying me.

Did they just stop with the Gemma and Tina duo? Since season 5 they barely have any good interactions and when they have, Tina just looks annoyed or just scolds Gemma. What happened to them?

Also, I really liked when Gemma was for fierce, not just get scolded by Tina and accepts it.

Dare I say, that Gemma and Calvin episode to manipulate Tina/Marty was very funny.

Idk, I just miss their duo. Does it get better?

When Paula (Dave's mom) shows up the first time

This episode to me was super cringe. It's clearly targeting the stereotypical Fox news lover.

I only agreed with it when Calvin was telling Dave to respect his mom even if he doesn't agree.

To me Paula was not racist. Truly racist people wouldn't even want to have dinner with black people.

If anything I felt more sympathetic to the mom and thought everyone was overreacting. She lived in a small town and thought LA was violent. That's a reasonable idea to have and makes sense for survival purposes. You want to be aware of dangers. But she comes out to see her family regardless. To me that is showing courage and open mindedness. Dave should have been praising her for that but just looks down on her for that comment.

I doubt the writers were trying to make Dave look like the bad guy but frankly in my eyes, they did. I think they thought let's make the mom the villian but to me it backfired.

Even the ending where they didn't want her to make a toast was just showing they still did not accept her. The whole episode is just dumb.

This to me is basically a form of geographic eliteism. It's not ok to look down on people from small towns and yet that's what happened in this episode. Basically you are trash unless you are in a big city.

Tina has said to Gemma in one episode she could see what was in her heart so certain behaviours could be understood but none of them (except Calvin for a brief moment) could do this for Paula and I find that the self righteousness of the character to be unappealing.

Question I can’t access seasons 5 and 6 :(

I live in Latam and Paramount+ doesn’t have seasons 5 and 6 so I’ve started to watch season 7 after finishing season 4 and hate that I’ve missed so much!!!

I tried with a VPN as if I was in the US and since I couldn’t use my current Paramount+ account (because it’s specifically for Latam), I tried to get a US account but I couldn’t! I’m not sure why, it only said there was an error and I’m guessing it’s because I don’t have a US credit card. I also tried to buy the seasons on Apple TV but it redirected me to Paramount+.

Has anyone had the same issue and resolved it? Please help me, I love The Neighborhood!

Question Was Season 6 just an arc season?

i finished season 6 in less than 24 hours and I realized it had the shortest season so far being only 10 episode, and the whole time it revolved around Courtney and her baby. was this season just like an into to 7 and just meant to be an arc for Courtney because she was only just introduced? I’m not complaining because I liked it but still
