DO NOT POST CAR/HOME AUDIO QUESTIONS IN THIS SUB!

This is a sub for the technical side of "Soundsystem Culture" - big, loud speaker boxes, often hand-built, in the dub-reggae tradition. Stuff that looks like this. Or this.

If you're looking for advice on home audio/theater systems, please try asking at /r/BudgetAudiophile, /r/Audiophile or /r/HomeTheater. Car Audio questions go to /r/CarAV.

Discussion about music should go here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundSystem/comments/ge9sov/official_rsoundsystem_music_thread/

Thank you!

This sub was created on October 11, 2011 when reddit (and the internet I suppose) was a very different place. This sub seems mostly the same as it's ever been though.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's contributed for all the photos and stories over the years.

cheers-

MY JMOD BUILD IS COMPLETE

Kia ora koutou wider system community.

For those who enaged with my last post, or followed what I’m up to from there, thank you!

Im pretty much just here to I guess share the news that my build is complete, and to open up the comments for any questions about my subjective experience of both listening to and mixing these loudspeakers for an audience.

The build went very well, especially as I was on a time crunch for the initial deployment.

Yes, I know, more black boxes, but I chose this as it ties into how I like to approach decor and the layout for stages that I have a say in how that side of thing goes :) I like the floating look and doing this with ground stack can be challenging.

A few people said they sounded better than their favourite pair of headphones which is pretty awesome to hear and I agreed. They are beautiful in the mids and vocal presence is incredible. They are in my opinion so good that they have now highlighted the time domain issues apparent with paraflex subwoofers, which has pushed me even further in the direction of tapped horns or FLH.

Hope you enjoy these photos :)

Running a weird little home system I thought I’d share. F1 minis from miniscooper, some hand made(?) cabinets from the 70s-80s my buddy gifted me. I’m picking up two Lafayette criterion 2003a speakers for $80. The 15s in those are blown if anyone has any replacement recommendations. I just ordered a Fosi TB10D 600w amp to power the criterion’s. Hope to build some skrams soon but making myself learn some stuff before I go all out.

Let the JMOD’s rip in the swamp this past weekend😍 Incredible sounds from these bad boys! Took ya’lls advice and made executive decision to couple subs this time, big difference in having consistent low end coverage across the dance floor without dead spots.

Will be adding some Sawmods for fills and either Solanas or Sawmods lites as monitors for next season. Maybe get some infrasub in the mix if my SKRAM ever gets built…. 😅

Ran em bi-amped: Driverack PA2, Crown XLS 1500 for the compression driver (16ohm), CVR-3004 DSP powering woofers and XOC 118’s. Will be eventually Tri-amp once I upgrade my rack and learn FIR filters but for now happy with the setup.

Plz don’t discuss location in comments to respect the spot ;)

My first sound

Began collecting vinyl in November last year, and it sent me down a rabbit hole. Got 3 Electronic-Voice speakers for free, from my local youth squat, and bought the vonyx after that. After that we cut the cables to the tops and converted them into a sub and kick. Future plan is taking out the drivers and making costum cabinets for all of them.

Rig is finally built, waiting for a measurement mic and some other bits to come in the post but now I’m looking to see how I can spruce it up with paint, ratchet straps and speakers grilles

I want to buy some grilles so that v@pes, pints and cigs don’t go in the kicks but I can’t seem to find speaker grilles large enough so I’m thinking of having smaller ones recessed into the mouth opening

Any advice on how to spruce it up would be great

Advice on how to power

Post image

Recently scored these horns for a good deal on FB marketplace. Still learning but would this idea make sense, utilizing them to stack on top of x2 18 sub x2 12 mids, was going to build x2 boxes with x3 horns a piece they are powered by 2425 jbl drivers. Looking for advice on amps for power and decent 3-4 way crossovers . Thank you in advance

Amp recommendations with AES3/EBU input (& thu)

I'm on the hunt for a DSP enabled line of amps that has an AES3 input. I'll need to drive the following with them:

- 2ch of 55W AES Power Rating @8ohm tweeters

- 2ch of 800W AES Power Rating @8ohm mid-kicks (though my sims say they reach xmax at 76V with impedance as low as 7.4ohms, so maybe it's 780W peak?)

- 2ch of 1200W AES Power Rating @8ohm subs

Now, this could all be in one 6channel unit with a single AES in, but it may make more sense to put it into three 2-ch units with AES daisy chained through?

I'm leaning toward thd Lab Gruppen IPX line, but I'd love to cut costs lower if possible. I'm worried that this Sinbosen amps might have poor quality DSP?

Currently still building the boxes, and trying to find the best bang for the buck. Kinda new to all this, and I'm not sure really exactly what amp power I need.

dsp advice !

hey I am building a sound system and I would like some advice about dsp

for you what is the best price to performance and features ratio dsp?

i was thinking abut the t.racks DSP 4x4 Mini/Pro but there is only 4 out and it might be not enough for future updates also i don't really like the front inputs for a 19" rack installation

i also was thinking about the  t.racks DSP 4x4 Amp 4.250 but it's seems a bit expensive for a 4X 250W amp with dsp

at the moment its just going to power 2X ta880l and some tops but i am already thinking about more sub kick and med for future upgrades

tks!

and about amps ?

First DIY sound system build – looking for an affordable subwoofer driver under €150

Hi everyone!

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. If not, please let me know and I'll move it.

I'm currently building my first DIY sound system for dub, reggae and techno, and I'm looking for advice on choosing a suitable subwoofer driver.

My budget for the driver is under €150, and I'm happy to buy second-hand if I can find something in good condition. Ideally, I'm looking for a decent mid-range professional driver with good punch, solid output and a sound that works well for both techno and dub.

Some drivers I've been considering are:

  • B&C 18PS76 – if I can find one second-hand within budget.
  • Electro-Voice EVX-180B – another possible used 18-inch option.
  • Fane Sovereign 15-600 LF – a possible new 15-inch alternative.
  • B&C 18TBX100 – another driver I've looked at, although I'm not sure I can find one within my budget.

I'm not set on any particular model, so I'd really appreciate other suggestions.

I'm planning to build the cabinet myself using 15 mm exotic plywood that I can get for free. I'd like to base the design on a proven, well-documented enclosure plan rather than designing everything from scratch. I'm particularly interested in something efficient, punchy, reasonably compact and visually appealing, inspired by professional sound systems such as Funktion-One.

This is my first build, so I'd appreciate advice on:

  • Which driver offers the best performance for the money.
  • Which drivers are suitable for a bass-reflex enclosure.
  • Any proven cabinet designs or plans you would recommend.
  • Whether a 15-inch or 18-inch driver would make more sense for my budget and intended use.

I'll be choosing a new amplifier as well, so the system can be matched properly.

Thanks a lot for your help and recommendations!

Mid Top Plan

After building 2x cubo 15 subs and 2x cubo 15 kick and 1x SMT120, I'm very happy with my mini stack but I'm not super happy with the mid top section. Can anyone recommend some beginner to intermediate mid top designs that would work well with a Eminence DELTAPRO12-450A 12in Speaker 375w 8 Ohm as I have two of them. And any budget friendly compression driver/horns recommendations would be much apricated. TIA

Been working on this small scale PA rig for the past couple months and now I'm in the process of tuning crossovers and EQs. I have a few more pics on my insta in case you're interested in the build:

Sub plan

Hello, I'm looking for plans for a dynamic subwoofer that still has good low-end extension to use with Mullins Mod C2D speakers. I want something with punch but that I can also use for dub, steppa, or heavy tribe music, something like the Cerebus Audio CH46. Can anyone help me, please

After the first iteration it came apparent that the 18 inch woofer of the B&C Triaxial had a rough time. Kicks (Paraflex G1V2) were needed to help out the tops and the subs. Today at ADE in Bar How i finally got to put up the full system. Im very happy with the result.

Cerwin Vega Earthquakes: Old vs New, which would you buy?

Post image
43 Upvotes

For the same price, $1800, would you rather have 6 x SL-36B's, or 2 x EL-36DP's?

Are the new designs that much better?

I know a lot of people/snobs crap on CV's but I'm rebuilding my sound system for raves, I really miss having folded horns, I had a pair of 21" earthquakes, the TS-42 I think, they sadly stopped making. And I finally found some local deals they seem rare/hard to find for sale these days. Yes I know one is passive, I have amps already.
