"Skookum" the word is Chinook for "strong" or "brave", which has become slang in parts of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest meaning "quality" or "badass".
"Skookum" the Reddit community is support for those who aspire to make skookum things, and to share their projects with other like-minded fabricators.
If you like to make things and you take pride in your craftsmanship - or if you aspire to becoming a better craftsperson than you currently are - this is the place for you!
Things we like to see:
Photos and videos of projects you are working on
Requests for help/advice on projects
Posts helping people with their problems
Things better posted elsewhere (and subject to removal when the mods see it):
Pictures of large industrial equipment
Pictures of equipment with the brand name "Skookum"
Political discussion
Crazy crackpot conspiracy theory crap
Self-promotion (new releases on your fabrication-related YouTube channel, offering services, etc) is explicitly allowed, so long as it is on topic and not overly repetitive. There's a line between "promotion" and "spam" - stay on the happy side of that line, and you'll be fine.
Welcome to the sub!

We recently finished building this horizontal drag finisher at our facility in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
The machine uses rotating work holders to move parts through finishing media for grinding and polishing applications, including gun barrels and other long components.
The entire build took about three weeks, and the completed machine is now headed to Wisconsin.
Thought this community might enjoy seeing how it came together!

Storage cylinders from a compressed air plant I used to have in my garage. Yes, that's 3800 PSI on the gauge. The air was clean and dry - I used it for scuba diving among other purposes.
Unfortunately, the plant had to be disassembled and sold for parts when the compressor failed and could not be economically repaired.

I took the cart up to my parents place last weekend and had issues so I couldn't do any drive bys with the engine running. I fixed that issue as we as installed new shocks and rear bushings and took it out today to drive it around a bit. I think I used about a gallon of fuel here. It's thirsty.

I picked this up on marketplace for 20 bucks! Its built like a brick shithouse, the latch is the most positive feeling latch ive ever felt. It weighs north of 200 pounds, I can see how Indiana Jones would have survived a nuke in one of these.
The r12 ran out so i replaced it with hfc152 which is can dusters. Its runs great and sips power.

Hey everyone, I found this group after a couple of minutes of thinking and I just had to ask. Anybody who used to read popular mechanics back in the seventies and eighties would see the occasional RQ Riley article about one of the crazy machines you could build with their plans.
I'm really curious if anybody here attempted to, completed or just bought some of the plans. I have a craft ones somewhere that I'm planning to scan and offer to the planet. I'd love to see what else is out there because even if you never build the stuff, it's fun to look at.

Hi everyone,
I’m researching formulated industrial consumables used in steel, TMT/billet casting, foundries, cement kilns, boilers, glass furnaces, and non-ferrous metal plants.
I am not asking for confidential formulas or trade secrets. I want to understand the technical and commercial side properly before entering this field.
I’m interested in products such as:
My goal is to build a genuine B2B company around:
I would really value advice from metallurgists, refractory engineers, steel plant operators, foundry professionals, refractory installers, consultants, and raw-material suppliers.
A few things I want to learn:
I am based in India and especially interested in serving steel/TMT, foundry, cement, boiler/power, glass, petrochemical, sugar, and non-ferrous industries.
If you have experience in this area, I would appreciate comments, resources, or a DM. If you provide paid consulting, please mention your specialty and region

Due to a change of work circumstances I was able to build this beast! Took a couple of goes to get the wheelbase right but shes a treat!
Just got make a top for it next...

How do you continuously change speed ratios without belts, cones, or gears? ⚙️
Check out this 3D-printed oscillating (impulse) CVT! It converts input rotation into reciprocating lever movement using eccentrics, then uses freewheel clutches to merge those movements back into smooth output rotation. Adjusting the lever swing changes the gear ratio on the fly!

Testing a homemade steam turbine unimoto on snow before the extreme winter races! Is this crazy DIY science project and custom engine build powerful enough to survive the cold?
