UTHSC vs. ETSU
Hey all, I wanted to share some of my recent experiences with UTHSC and also had a few questions if there are any current ETSU students or alums out there. I apologize if I upset anyone or if I shatter any hopes.
I’m currently a P1 at UTHSC in Knoxville. They were my top pick given their strong history, pass rates, and my wonderful experience with their alums. I also did not wish to relocate seeing as my parents live nearby and I currently live with them as to not pay rent. I applied early to UTHSC with a 3.5 GPA, soared through their interview process, and got my desired campus location. Everything seemed to be falling into place, or so I thought. I got to orientation in Memphis and they began explaining they were rolling out a new form of curriculum. “A better curriculum than the classes before us? Sign me up!”, I thought. They then began emphasizing that it was “experimental”, with constant reassurances from advisors of how “it will all be okay”. Odd. Orientation lasted three days. They withheld our course schedules until end of day on the third day. They were a train wreck. IPPEs started on our second day. Flipped classroom. Constant exceptions and later discovered contradictions to the “set” schedule. Then came the cherry on-top. They proudly touted their high stakes SPECs grading tables. They stated that less emphasis would be put on letter grades and overall averages would be nonexistent.
I wanted to trust the process. I firmly believed they had our best interests in-mind. Of our three completed courses, they have had to drop passing thresholds twice. Constant scares of not passing or not doing enough outside of class, only to lower the bar later-on. Not to mention, there is no cap on recorded lectures. I have had some get up to 4 hours not mentioning pre-class assignments. They held a meeting to address concerns about grades and the curriculum. I attended thinking that maybe something would be amended, surely something had to be fixed. Not even two minutes into the meeting “We will not be changing the curriculum nor will we be going back to the old curriculum in any capacity”. Our opinions were “noted” and nothing has changed. One of our current courses is seemingly no different seeing as our past three quizzes have ended in class makeups and academic affairs coming to students personally asking about their perceived issues.
I began digging. Surely there had been warning signs I had missed during my application process. I discovered an incredibly telling underbelly. High faculty turnover, satellite campuses operating in the red, and current class sizes not even meeting 50% of what they were in 2023. These changes are not about student performance. This is their life boat.
I met with my academic advisor two days ago, informing her of my plan of transferring to ETSU in Johnson City. She defended their lower NAPLEX score, implied ETSU’s was inflated, and began rattling off UTHSC’s impressive statistics. These statistics are not applicable to my class seeing as they are trialing a broken curriculum they refuse to fix, and who only knows come the NAPLEX.
I feel like every prospective UTHSC student needs to know this. I wanted a top 20 program but what I am getting is a nightmare. No one should sink their loan money into a program who sees them as a guinea pig.
My experience aside, I am hopeful of ETSU. I cannot wait for traditional curriculum and grading again. They have been lovely having acknowledged my previous acceptance, and are working with me so that my semester at UTHSC will not go to waste. I will join their P1 class for their Spring semester. If there are any ETSU students or alums out there I would love to hear your experiences and possibly connect. What’s it like? Campus life? What have your experiences been with faculty?
If you made it this far thank you for reading, and I hope this helps anyone who plans to attend a pharmacy school in Tennessee.
