In memoriam Simply the best...
I had Ozzie for 18 years. I knew he was slipping away, but I didn't want to have him put to sleep. I prayed that I wouldn't have to make that horrible decision, although I had resolved that if he hadn't passed by the weekend, I would schedule an appointment with the vet.
I took him for one last car ride, carrying him to the car in his doggy bed and placing him in the front seat for the first time. I even grilled him a chicken breast for dinner, but he didn't touch it. His breathing had become labored, and he had started making noises in his sleep. He passed away sometime between when I fell asleep around 4 a.m. and when I got up to use the bathroom around 6:30 a.m.
I had already purchased a pet body bag, dug his grave, and filled it with lime. I placed him in the bag, laid him atop his favorite doggy bed, and lowered him into the grave. I covered him with cedar chips, and my son filled in the hole with dirt. We topped it with rocks and placed a basin with a solar fountain over everything, creating a lasting memorial to Ozzie.
As fate would have it, his best friend, the golden retriever who lived next door, happened to be outside on the other side of the fence with her owner during our makeshift memorial service. It was a fitting, if unplanned, presence for such a difficult goodbye.
Unfortunately, within a matter of weeks, his friend fell ill, was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away, too. It was heartbreaking to lose them both in such a short period of time.
Two years later, I still miss my Pom. Eighteen years is a long time to share your life with a companion, and no amount of time makes that bond any less meaningful. Ozzie was simply the best.
