Historic Philadelphia Wanted to share some of my favorite photos from my great-grandfather's pre-1920's album, taken in and around Philadelphia

Was told I should post these here last week after sharing a selection of these photos in [r/TheWayWeWere](r/TheWayWeWere)! I've tried picking out a few different ones that didn't appear in my previous posts, so hopefully if you came across those before these might be a little extra treat for yah!

In comments on the previous posts I had mentioned that I thought the place on 16th and Brown, where my great-great grandfather's grocery store stood, was gone, however, I am woefully unobservant and very bad at spot-the-difference pictures when switching between two photos not directly next to each other because my brain is entirely shiny and smooth. The building is still there with the front door facing out to the corner (and you can see where the large window was walled up to create a much sadder, darker living space).

Their home at 802 N 16th st is also still there (I think it is No. 806 now) and must've been turned into small apartments. I believe they owned the entire three floors. If you happen to live there on the third floor, I hope my great-grand aunt, Iva, or great-great grand aunt, Anna, are kindly ghosts! Apparently that is where her bedroom was! In fact, if you go deeper into my post history, you can find a recording of her talking about being in that house :)

641 52st was their second home, probably some time after they closed the grocery store. I'm endlessly lucky to still have a circular advertising the grocery store, which you can see part of after the photos of the building!

My great-grandmother's family lived in Wyncote. I have another amazing recording I recently found of her recounting her childhood memories growing up in Philadelphia for my mom who had asked back in the 1960's. Her parents were Jerome H Sheip and Ellen Koller. Jerome was a dapper little, well-to-do businessman involved in the lumber and cigar box making industries. His brother Henry H Sheip was more well known, and while I can't remember if I hallucinated this, I swear I have a letter where Amelia, my great-grandmother, said he was always quite jealous of that fact.

Among so much else, my favorite family legacy from their time in Wyncote is that they lived close to poet and notable asshole, Ezra Pound. Apparently my great-grand uncle, "The little Sheip boy next door", annoyed him so much that this fact made it into a biography and, in one instance, a letter home to his parents hoping that the new neighbors were less obnoxious. I'm not one to find personal pride in family history very often but I will personally and proudly claim coming from a family line of moderate length when it concerns being annoying.

📣📣Rants and Raves📣📣 Tree pruning notice from the City. They recommend we pay for it because they're backlogged for years!?!?

Post image
101 Upvotes

We got this notice today from the City. A few things:

  1. They said that we requested this tree out front be inspected. We never did, and the tree looks fine. It's been overgrown before, but we trimmed it ourselves at that time.

  2. It seems like the letter says that the City will prune it, but their "pruning backlog is several years long" so they recommend we hire a service to pay for it, and that we need permits to have it pruned.

  3. We pay way too much in taxes, and can't really afford to have it pruned. We pay so much in taxes, and though we have the money, we really can't afford it.

Why can't Philly provide better services to its residents?!?! Aaagh.

Local Business I asked Philly what's their palate, here are the results after 5000 answers

Hi Map Guy Here,

Last week I debuted Palate Axes, a palate discovery survey based on political alignment charts to open everyone's minds and stomachs to new cultures and foods they may not know they align with.

5000 people responded and 1/3 came from Philly, somehow 100 from Finland... thank you Philly & the Finnish on lookers sharing this to Helsinki

If you want to find your palate, here is the link: https://www.djourformore.com/palate & results are here

Salty (+3). Soft pretzels with mustard, cheesesteaks, the roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone, hoagies stacked with salami and provolone, Herr’s chips, and crab fries in Old Bay-style seasoning. Philly’s signature foods are built on cured meat, aged cheese and salt.Bitter (+4). Broccoli rabe on the roast pork sandwich is the most Philly bitter there is. Add the Ethiopian buna coffee ceremonies (Alif, Salam Cafe) and dark-roast coffee (Wawa needs to bring this back, but Colombian will do). A serious craft beer scene (Yards, Victory, Tröegs, etc)Sour (+2). Long hots, pickles. Shoutout Fishtown Pickles. Cambodian & Vietnamese use of tamarind, pickled carrot and daikon on a bánh mì. Korean in Olney for kimchi and pickled banchan. Ethiopian's injera tang. To Russian and Ukrainian Northeast Philly Polish for sour rye soup, sauerkraut, and kefir.
Its almost too on the nose... obviously pretzels and pho scream Philly but the mango sticky rice is a welcomed surprised.
This is a work in progress, and needs alot of fine tuning as I research and tie flavors to a numerical scored palate. But the purpose is to find new foods & fusions that appear head scratching but have potential you wouldn't suspect.Smoky rice with tangy chickpea curry, garlicky bean sprout salad, tomato based aromatic sauce, with pita & salt.... its at least more inventive than Chipotle
San Francisco appears to be the perfect destination for a Philadelphian and I can vouch its phenomenal out there. Our least aligned city... Honolulu.

See the full results here: https://www.patreon.com/c/djour

In closing, please share this around not because of any vanity or financial gain, but to keep improving the data and compare other palates around the world. I have enough data to compare Philly, NYC, Seattle & SF and looking to expand further!

Question? Anyone have experience with the First Unitarian Church?

I have been venting to my therapist today about feelings of isolation and a severe lack of friendship and sense of community in my life, and I was a bit taken aback during therapy today that my therapist suggested joining a church, but more specifically a Unitarian church, and he linked me a bunch of webpages for Philadelphia's First Unitarian Church. My therapist said it's something that's had a lot of spiritual and communal benefits for him, and he thought I should consider checking out because he found Unitarians to be very welcoming and non-dogmatic, but especially friendly to LGBTQ people (I am nonbinary and asexual).

Does anyone know anything about them? Their website looks like they have a lot of regular events and services. I had never considered joining a church as a way to meet people or have community. I was raised Catholic as a kid but I don't remember much besides my parents telling me it was just something I had to do on top of school. My family and myself eventually became atheist, and that's another reason my therapist suggested checking it out (he said Unitarians are pretty welcoming to atheist folk and he had a similar experience being raised Catholic and then becoming atheist).

Edit: I made a mistake. My therapist linked me the Germantown Unitarian Church, not the first church of Philadelphia
