Bloodborne , Driveclub, Killzone Shadowfall, Infamous Second Son, The Order 1886, The last Guardian and Shadow of the Colosus: SO MANY chances for Sony to make "easy" money > but i guess that they dont have enough money or people capable of releasing an official PC versions...and so the community (with an actual good use of IA) had to do it.

Someone is going to be executed at Sony´s HQ for being so dumb.

u/UnsettllingDwarf 9d ago

It would probably be stupid cheap and easy for Sony to do it themselves in house compared to random people reverse engineering hardware and shit.

After all they’d make money. Just don’t pull a marathon and spend $250 million dollars on a $25 million dollar game.

59

u/SirWigglesVonWoogly 9d ago

Same could be said of Nintendo. They’d make tons of money selling PC ports. The only question is if they’d make more than they lose on hardware sales long term.

38

u/HikariAnti 8d ago

I mean, as we can see the alternative is that people do it themselves and they don't earn any money.

15

u/4236W 9d ago

But they keep saying they loose money on the hardware and earn it back on the games, so not selling hardware would then be a bonus if anything

5

u/Vandergrif 8d ago

Considering how much the price of hardware is going up and up, but the cost of producing ports remains consistent, or even cheaper if these recompile attempts done by amateurs are anything to go by... Relying on hardware profit seems like a bad idea at the moment. They're going to get fewer and fewer hardware sales over the next few years anyways.

1

u/xodius80 5d ago

nintendo has made ip and games that don't disappoint, i think they can pass they have earn it.

when was a mario game not woth the money.

1

u/Robrogineer 8d ago

At least Nintendo has the advantage of their Switch console having a clear-cut advantage by virtue of being portable.

Xbox and PlayStation have absolutely no benefits in comparison to a PC.

0

u/Dry-Engineering9224 9d ago

nintendo actually would. sony simply has a maximized customer base and no real reason to own both it and pc.

1

u/ShadowTryHard 6d ago

Sony could do vibe-coded ports and get free money, a bit like these ones were made.

It’s not perfect, but it’s not like they don’t have cheap options on the table to profit fast.

1

u/Dry-Engineering9224 9d ago

nixxes was doing it for like 3m a game...

1

u/Catch_022 9d ago

They could basically do the same thing with AI that everyone else does, then spend a few months polishing it.

Really easy money for them.

Japanese companies are dumb

33

u/razingstorm 8d ago

Japan's lack of awareness of anything outside Japan will forever cripple its potential. It's like the USA and UK's center of the world issues squared. Also seems out of place because they've never had that level of influence.

7

u/darkargengamer 8d ago

Japan's lack of awareness of anything outside Japan

This is a perfect summary of the constant issues with Japanese products in general.

Im not saying that they should follow DUMB western trends: but sometimes it would make wonders if they would HEAR opinions outside their small box mentality.

7

u/toooft 8d ago

That's some take. Sony Interactive Entertainment has been American for 10 over years.

8

u/toooft 8d ago

PlayStation HQ (Sony Interactive Entertainment) has been American for 10 over years. About the same time they've been making idiotic decisions.

It's an American company making decisions

Wait... You can play bloodborne on pc

9

u/TheLaughingWolf 9d ago

Yup, been playing it for the last couple days.

No crashes and buttery smooth.

2

u/A_Perplexed_Wanderer 9d ago

Can you link me a guide on how to

5

u/gljivicad 9d ago

Google “supermedo bloodborne GitHub”

9

u/encroachzeitgeist 9d ago

tbf the biggest reason these have been coming one after the other is because of the advent of AI models. being fair to Sony, they literally did release Colossus 3 times already. another release and they would risk getting criticized for being lazy and money hungry

7

u/BIissful 9d ago

Yeah but if you don't release on PC and get paid than someone else is going to do it for you and give it away for free

8

u/darkargengamer 9d ago

the biggest reason these have been coming one after the other is because of the advent of AI models

Yes, thats true: but Sony could have worked manually the most hyped games (as Bloodborne) much before this advancement in IA...

They lost every chance possible to increase their market just because they (1) their expectations are too high considering the price of their ports (too high for games released too late) and (2) being so proud to NOT being capable of abandon their exclusivity (even if that means condemning their own franchises to always stay locked on old systems)

they literally did release Colossus 3 times already

Yes, but on the same platform: at least they released TLOU and TLOU2 on PC...

In my opinion, Sony always had the advantage over Microsoft in variety of titles: but their later maneouvers and complete lack of care for the consumer has lead them to their current situation...

5

u/Sharpie1993 9d ago

It still blows me away that they went out of their way to buy nixxes, start porting games to PC and making money for simply porting shit over, just to pull the plug because they think PC players will go buy a PlayStation.

If they released games day one they would have been rolling in cash.

3

u/Dry-Engineering9224 9d ago

they were literally making their game's production budgets back from pc ports of good games...

1

u/libdemparamilitarywi 8d ago

If they released games day one they would have been rolling in cash.

How did that work out for Xbox?

1

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 9d ago

Not releasing a remastered/performance upgraded version of Bloodborne on the PS5 is one of the most baffling things Sony did this generation. They could have earned so much easy good will with gamers by delivering that(and easy money for them frankly).

3

u/Sharpie1993 9d ago

It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll try use it as their flagship game to sell their next console.

0

u/ShadowTryHard 6d ago

With all due respect, I’m fully against Sony on the topic of cutting off PC ports, but regarding, Bloodborne, it’s not really Sony’s fault.

Some information came to public about a year ago that if Sony wanted to retouch the game, as in remaking it, they’d want to do it with Miyazaki’s permission, since he was the artist creator and writer of this universe (another likely reason is Sony not wanting to be on bad terms with someone like Miyazaki, which could rule out any possibility of there being a sequel to the game under his artistic guise).

Miyazaki told Sony he didn’t want to touch the game again, so Sony let it be. So a remake would be out of question.

Now on a remaster, Sony doesn’t want to remaster since it’s too cheap and easy and it doesn’t make money. I also think there was someone pointing it out that changing the game to 60fps limit could destroy some of the way Miyazaki envisioned the game to be seen, like with the combat movements and all. I don’t know about this last part, but the fact is, in this specific case, Sony is lucky not to be considered at fault here, unlike in the many other scandals and PR disasters it has been involved.

3

u/UltimateToa 9d ago

Well that is just one example, there is an entire graveyard of games people want to see again from Sony

1

u/claudekennilol 9d ago

Please. Everybody and every corporations themselves knows they are money-hungry. That's literally the definition of a for-profit business. If they thought there was money in re-releasing it they'd do it in a heartbeat. See Skyrim.

15

u/[deleted] 8d ago

6

u/MrrQuackers 8d ago

They did port over Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon Zero Dawn. But then 2026 hit and they're like "sike!".

14

u/MrNathanF 9d ago

I will not be surprised if the playstation becomes obsolete in the next 5-6 years. Sony fumbled big time.

30

u/Dewnami 9d ago

We are the PCMR bubble. Most of my friends would probably struggle with even saving a file on a PC.

Not gonna happen. People over estimate the number of people pirating games, when it's actually nowhere near as mainstream to warrant Playstation consoles becoming obsolete.

u/Jvt25000 9d ago

I did a casual look at PS4 exclusives there's not many left. Most games stuck on the PS4 were from around launch by 2018 everything they were releasing also had a PC release. So here's to eventually Knack 1,2 ratchet 2016, gravity rush 2 and like 8 other games. Also I feel like shadPS4 is still important to digitally preserve the entire console.

2

u/Balc0ra 8d ago

It's the same situation on Xbox, at least for delisted titles. As Forza Horizon 1 & 2 and Motorsport 1 to 4 are shown playable in 4K at 120 FPS on PC atm. And they are not emulated

2

u/Senkoy 9d ago

Nothing dumb about it. No one is buying the console without exclusives. No one could have predicted AI would do this that many years ago.

3

u/JohnnyShekels 9d ago

Exclusives in modern times were always dumb. They had a purpose when consoles were unique hardware with their own graphical techniques. Now they are just mid to low end PC's with a locked off library.

What's happening currently was always a possibility. It's just now people are speeding up the progress with AI, and modern compiling techniques.

Wait infamous has been released on PC?? I've been wanting to play it for years

1

u/mrMayurr 4d ago

Indeed, if they had released the game on PC, the PC community would have supported and purchased it, helping the studio. However, Sony's greed and poor decisions seem limitless.

Sony's policy of cutting out PC ports is going to massively backfire with this new paradigm opening up.

I foresee two possible futures:

  1. Sony gets their shit together and fires off simultaneous official PC ports moving forward to capitalize on the paying player base who have no interest in buying a PS.

  2. Fight this in court, embed hidden DRM that attempts to break decompilation, etc. And inevitably, they will lose this battle.

I am pretty sure they're going with 2.

8

u/Digital_Deebo 9d ago

I think so too. It's not as if it took a lot of money to port the games. They bought a whole company dedicated to PC ports. They made a Billion dollars from the PC ports on games that were old when they finally brought them over to PC. Now they are making no money and ppl are still playing the games.

I would rather make money and have the Console Fanboys upset than Make no money to appease the Fanboys.

3

u/Sylvers 9d ago

Honestly, at this stage, I am waiting to see a new breed of studio to spring out and offer to do official paid ports/recomps of console games mainly using AI. They'll do it cheap and fast, and it may start a complete shift in game exclusivity moving forward.

400

u/vI_M4YH3Mz_Iv 9d ago

They messed up massively, I cant remember if it was sony but someone said that their ports didnt sell as expected, yeah pr9babky due to them releasing years after the ps4/5 version and the fact they are full price upon release on pc. However even though some didnt sell that well I bet their return on investment was still very very good, I cant imagine the cost of porting then from ps to pc would have cost much at all, so any sales would have been almost pure profit.

218

u/Alanmurilo22 9d ago

They clearly made money from PC ports, we know that already: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/former-sony-exec-finally-says-the-quiet-part-out-loud-putting-playstation-games-on-pc-is-almost-like-printing-money/

https://gameworldobserver.com/2023/12/19/playstation-pc-game-sales-leak-insomniac-budgets-roi

They stopped porting to PC because: 1) leadership changes; 2) the RAM crisis is hitting them hard (and will continue to do so), so they realized they need every little argument they can use to sell their closed box and still make profit, hence exclusives coming back and ending physical media (more ROI on digital sales). But with the PS5 being hacked and emulators and recompilations taking over in the last month, anyone can see their HQ is in high panic mode — GTA 6 is the saving grace here, but it won't save their asses forever.

78

u/linuxwes 9d ago

> GTA 6 is the saving grace here, but it won't save their asses forever.

I am very curious to see if somebody manages to "recompile" GTA 6 for PC before Rockstar officially releases it on PC. It probably won't happen, but you knows folks will be trying and it would be hilarious if they succeed.

19

u/Howtobefreaky 9d ago

They stopped porting quite a ways before the ram crisis

3

u/cursedfan 9d ago

They want to sell gta 6 on ps5 then maybe a pro upgrade then on ps6 then a remaster on ps6 pro

31

u/Sylvers 9d ago

It was always a self inflicted wound. As you say, they made their PC ports less desirable and especially at a full box price point when they're so delayed.

The scuttlebutt says something different, however. Suggesting that the real reason they stopped ports wasn't that they made very little money. Rather that they erroneously assumed that they can tempt PC players into converting into future PS owners if they like the ports.

But the reality is, if you have PS and Xbox games ports on a decent PC, you truly have no reason to get a console. So that assumption failing made them pull out. That's what we're assuming, anyway. It's not like they'll admit it to us.

22

u/FeedbackInhibit 9d ago

I was enjoying computer gaming before the first PlayStation existed. They never had a chance of converting some of us.
I had planned, at one time, on buying a PS5 and keeping it in my living room for guest/party entertainment, but they managed to nullify whatever respect I had left for Sony. I won't give them money if I can avoid it.

2

u/Qardnall 9d ago

Hit the nail on the head. Sony is in the hardware business, all their first party software is there specifically to entice users to buy the latest hardware. They must have realized the most effective way to tempt people to buy the hardware is to keep their stuff exclusive to that platform. It's unfortunate since I'd rather play on PC, but it makes sense at least, unlike their other recent decisions...

→ More replies (2)

2

u/DolphinOrDonkey 9d ago

One of many reasons: Sony didn't have the PC to Playstation conversion they thought they would have. They openly have said one of the major reasons they ported games to PC was to get PC players into the Playstation ecosystem.

The ports actually had an opposite effect, and fewer PC players were buying Playstations.

3

u/Random_Guy_47 8d ago

If you've spent 2k+ on a gaming pc you likely don't want to spend hundreds more on a console that you'll use for the 6 exclusive games that you actually care about.

I bought most of the games they ported to Steam. If they continue porting them I'll continue buying them but I won't buy a console either way.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PemaleBacon 9d ago

Thats mostly true with some exception. Stellar Blade for example sold insanely well on PC. Sony doesn't understand the PC market or what its expectations are. If they were far smarter they would be able to hugely take the PC market to their advantage but they're still stuck in the past with exclusives and console ecosystem

→ More replies (1)

15

u/MaximumGlum9503 9d ago

They may be left with no choice but to do pc ports I get a feeling they held several back but no one could have predicted this before gta 5, I wonder how many will choose to update firmware for that one game

12

u/Sylvers 9d ago

I think ultimately.. you're right. But I kinda doubt their first solution will be to do the logical thing. Sony has a strong anti consumer streak. They always had it. They never use a scalpel when a sledgehammer is nearby.

I think they will first try to fight this. And of course, it won't work. And eventually they will cave in and put together a bullshit PR statement about how they love the PC community and want them to enjoy the great games they make, or some nonsense like that.

7

u/Vivid-Produce-9373 9d ago

from a purely technical pov they can't do shit ,AI companies run the world rn and Gaming revenue is nothing for them nor Is Sony

11

u/ABLogic 9d ago

Or they push cloud gaming, and the PS6 will just a glorified streambox, holding only decryption keys to access their platform, or something along those lines.

8

u/Mistredo 9d ago

The problem with cloud gaming is that it doesn't work well in many locations. You need to be relatively close to a data center, and in many places, that's simply not feasible. Even in areas where data centers exist, you need specialized hardware and a large enough user base to justify equipping those data centers with it.

Additionally, this costs a lot of money to operate, so a $100 game would suddenly become $100 + a $30 subscription + hardware costs. And at that point, what's even the point of having PlayStation hardware? If everything runs through the cloud, any device with a basic chip can stream games.

The PS5 is still competing with PC, Xbox, and Switch, and this move could alienate a lot of people and cost Sony a significant number of customers. I would be very surprised if they went down this route, and this protection would only work if they went all in and stopped selling games altogether.

I suspect that with this, it's too little too late if Sony suddenly decides to port some of these to Steam etc next year. They already told PC players off by telling them that the sequel would be on a $900 console instead last year

6

u/lsf_stan 9d ago

funny how the online talk about AI has changed now

when modders started using AI for games...things really shifted

and now we have the possibility of never having any games be exclusive to consoles

all games can now have unofficial playable PC ports, thanks to AI/ML

10

u/Sylvers 9d ago

I find it equally ironic. I am a graphic designer and my field is mostly nuked by AI already. I had to get on with the times pretty early and learn the new tools. The thing I'd want to communicate to people who avoid AI is.. it's extremely capable, even if you mostly see people make low effort crap with it.

This whole decomp/porting situation is just the beginning of a long chain of discoveries of what a layman can do when they have the equivalent of a team of coding experts available at a very low price on their PC to do all their bidding.

Some crazy stuff is about to happen to the digital world, when most everything can be decompiled at the 1's and 0's.

→ More replies (5)

8

u/jonydevidson 9d ago

Fight this in court, embed hidden DRM that attempts to break decompilation, etc. And inevitably, they will lose this battle.

You can't stop this. The only way to stop the future that is coming is to move everything to the servers and offer only streaming, where the delivery you get is streamed video.

That's the only way.

4

u/ConsiderationSoggy65 8d ago

Since my 1660 is already running some emulator games perfectly, with frame rates above 50 fps (some games don't quite hit a steady 60 fps, while others exceed 70 fps—all while using only half of my graphics card and processor capacity), I believe that with further updates, these games should all be able to run at over 70 fps on this PC.

44

u/Atomosthethird 9d ago

Cant wait for shadow and second son. We eating

0

u/Sevla7 9d ago

As a fan of Ueda work:

The best version of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus is the OG PS2 version, the remaster for PS3 was very faithful but it changed a couple of things (no big deal if i'm remembering it correctly), now the "remake" did some very weird changes to the og artistic vision just because they wanted to show everyone how the new version is better instead of being 100% faithful. Some changes in the fog, lighting effects and how you deal with bosses definitely delivers something different compared to when this game was praised as "art" when it was first released.

So... a faithful port of the OG PS2 game with some really good CRT Filter and framerate/widescreen fixes would probably be the absolute best version.

The most amazing game that I hated playing.

15

u/Mighti-Guanxi 9d ago

interesting statement... reminds me of Nier replicant a little bit. care to explain how/why? i was looking forward to this game and heard a lot of good things about it.

u/Downtown_Lock3934 9d ago

I'm not the person you replied to, and i have yet to play the full version as i only got to play a demo back in the day, but i had the experience that killing these giant beasts just felt wrong. Like i was a bad person for doing so.

It's been on my list to play ever since it came out though. ICO is one of the best games I've ever played, so i immediately added Colossus to my need to play list.

The game has some amazing elements about it. The admosphere, the giants, the gameplay loop, they're all great and a good indication of why that game is so beloved by people.

And then the controls grag the whole thing down. They're clunky and frustrating, and have aged terribly. It's like plain one of those knock-off rubriks cubes that gets stuck constantly: Doable, but not fun.

Maybe I'm the minority but I don't like how this game is structured. Sure it's fun to feel small and powerless, David vs Goliath sort of thing, but there's not much else in the game. Kinda feels like dark souls without the levels or enemies, just walking from one boss to the other. I do love the atmosphere and the feeling of getting lost in an ancient land, but that's about it

The only game I bought 3 times. PS2, PS3 and the Remake

2

u/TheSweetestKill 9d ago

The vibes are immaculate. There's this ever-present melancholy that almost no other game manages to convey.

1

u/terteli 9d ago

Haha yeah nailed it :D fuckin great and frustrating

u/hitmobilegamehsr 9d ago

I'm so happy this is happening right after Sony cancelled their PC ports. Screw them

24

u/351C_4V 9d ago

YES! This is the one I'm waiting for. I just want 4k and a steady 60FPS

1

u/unreal-kiba 9d ago

And maybe the jump shouldn't be a glitchy teleport.

A beautiful game that I can’t ever play again, it was too sad to take down those strange creatures.

My brother and his gf watched me play it and I remember she cried when I beat the leviathan in the water temple, she felt bad for it

That kind of sept into me too, the rest of the game was a somber affair

1

u/H0lographic_Meatloaf 8d ago

I don't disagree at all it is a very somber game but I think that that's very much the point. It's a tragedy, really. Beautiful game, definitely one of my top games of all time, I hope you give it another chance someday.

This and Demon Souls were the only two games that I’d have considered getting a PS5 for. In a few months I’m hoping to be able to play both on my PC.

I don’t understand why they never did timed releases for them. Maybe the financials weren’t worth it but I’d have picked them both up day one and I can’t remember the last time I did that for any game.

5

u/SippyMountain 9d ago

Eh, I still wouldn't pick them up day 1. PC ports are often lazy as fuck and barely run on any build short of one you could have instead purchased a used 2020 Honda Civic with minor cosmetic damage for a similar price.

1

u/Thorpy 8d ago

Ye that’s fair, I suppose my point is more that I’d pay full price for those games which is a rarity for me.

5

u/GrimDallows 9d ago

I remember buying demons souls in ps3, then try to get everyone to get to play it... and everyone refusing and calling it a shitty game.

Man it feels so strange that it created a whole genre remembering how people refused to even touch it past the tutorial when I took it to my buddies homes to show them.

Dark Souls struck the timegeist.

It grew popular because streaming and lets plays grew big at the same time. People enjoyed seeing players suffer and grow. Speedruns, and "challenge" runs kept the flow going.

Ontop of that its a great game to play yourself even if you watched someone play it before.

DS blowing up like that was super lucky. Without all the spotlight it would have been the nieche game Demon Souls was. (Also wouldnt have happened if the game was stuck on a console.)

This was a PS4 game, definitely would have been cheaper to just go that way instead of getting a 5 for it anyway

1

u/J-seargent-ultrakahn 9d ago

You can play them now lol

u/Mortwight 9d ago

poor lil guy

5

u/mbxz7LWB 9d ago

Ending to this game is super unexpectedly sad.

5

u/TheSweetestKill 9d ago

The entire game has this constant feeling of sadness that is so unique.

1

u/_Bob-Sacamano 8d ago

Why did the guy die at the end of the video? Didn't he kill the giant?

I hated killing the colossi :-(

6

u/ahmedoomar04 9d ago

Can someone please tell me where can I find all of these PC ports.

2

u/Altered_Kill 9d ago

All of these games are hosted on github. So you are looking for a github repo for this specific game.

Im sure someone is or will be putting together a launcher to host all of these (heck im thinking about it).

2

u/The13eeraholic 9d ago

Isn't that what Quiver Launcher is? Or do you mean the actual game files? I'm currently trying to figure this all out 😅

I looked at that fake storefront thingy they had up for a bit and it said in order to play any of these games you have to have a jailbroken PS5. So it doesn’t sound like they’re just making standalone PC “ports”

0

u/Wiseon321 9d ago

This is the funny part:
It’s being hosted on GitHub, get ready for a reckoning like none-other. This is insanely unprecedented.

waiting for Ghost of Yotei and Astrobot

yes yes emulator is already working on Astrobot but emulation always need beefy PC, i wait for exe version, in theory it should require spec close to PS5

3

u/elessarjd 9d ago

Recent PS5 games, like Astrobot, aren't being emulated in the traditional sense. Because the PS5 and PC share the same chip architecture, these "emulators" actually use a compatibility layer. This layer intercepts the console's code and makes your PC hardware act like a PS5, rather than virtually emulating a full PS5 system, so you don't need nearly as beefy of a computer to run these as you might think.

15

u/PCAnvil 9d ago

Only reason to buy a ps5 over pc is to play sony exclusives and if everything is going to be ported to pc with 100 plus fps then sony is in deep trouble

3

u/CoffeeGrinds96 8d ago

Optimization. Let's be real, some PC games have shit optimizations vs console.

2

u/RemyVonLion 8d ago

Until modders figure out how to optimize anything and everything far better than any developer through continuous community improvements lol

1

u/shankartz 8d ago

No they aren't. As far as I am aware you can't build a ps5 equivalent pc for cheaper or the same price. So people who just want to play games are going to drop more money on a pc. And people who just want to pick up and play aren't magically going to want to go through the effort of building and maintaining a pc along with dealing with emulation just to play video games. Sony is gonna be fine.

1

u/MCWizardYT 8d ago edited 8d ago

roughly equivalent to the launch PS5 (PCPartPicker).

Price: $611

PS5 launch price: $600

Difference: $11

This is, of course, assuming you can get all the parts at those prices (the prices are based on the current used market)

Most Xbox games are on PC, nobody is in trouble.

1

u/murfi 8d ago

no. it wont make a meaningful difference in their profits.

how many people do you think are going to try and find sources to get these games, set up the emulators, potentially troubleshoot etc.? even in techy subreddits like this it will only be a fraction of users.

u/Efficient-Run-7755 9d ago

I unfortunately am not the target audience of this game and could not get through more than 4 collossi, but happy for the cult followers.
