Bored at work yet again and got what I think may be the smallest crane I will ever be able to make with my nail-less fingers and no tools.

Also btw did you know receipt paper is like 1/2 as thick as printer paper allowing you to make micro origami a lot easier?
And is origami easier with or without fingernails?

Making your own papers

Firstly sorry for my bad engrish, it's not my native language. Anyone also making own papers? Since there is no papers in my country and it's so expensive to buy in overseas hobby shop, I started making my own papers. I am using methyl cellulose. I have tried 3m 77 spray glue too but it wasn't what I want actually. I hated using foils between tissues. Making a mistake while folding never forgives. Or in hard folds homemade foil between tissues with spray glue fails so hard. So I started using Mc. I work on glass. Mc is a weird material. I have tried different solutions to mix it with water like using mixer, shaking, stirring for one hour. Best method I have found you boil the water and take 100ml. It's cooling down to 80C while you are measuring with a cup then add 1 big spoon of Mc (I don't use cmc, I have read lots of bad comments on it) then add it into 80c water slowly and stir it slowly. Then add 150 ml cold water. I think this is the fastest way to make this solution. Never use 40-50C water. Mc is a weird chemical. It's acting so weird in warm water (I am chemist, but I don't how I explain this) between 40-50 degree water its acting very weird. So you just use room temperature water and stir it one hour. Or use hot water cold water method. I left the jar in fridge one night. Remember we don't want bubbles in it. (also you can dilute it later or if it's too diluted you can add more Mc powder in it so don't afraid for trying it.) And next day I take it on another two cups for working with it. I add a little just a little water. And in second cup I add 10% Amsterdam 105 titanium white acrylic paint. You can use other brands too but I need to warn you I have used another brand and it bleeded out in my black tissue. Also solved it's colour results were so bad. Just be sure the paint u use has pw6 pigment in it. I colour the second Mc solution with this, so my white tissue looks better.

Another problem I witnessed is the glass side of Mc becomes so shiny. Some guys says you can dry brush that but it didn't work for me. What solution I have found is you spray some water on glass then wipe it with a clean cloth. So it's kinda moisturizing. Then I apply clear Mc solution on glass. Put a black tissue. Another clear coat of Mc. I apply it starting from center as an X shape. Then I put second tissue which is white.

(I have tried different type of brushes and best one is sponge brush, you can take out airbubles easily without tearing paper.) lastly I coat it with white coloured Mc solution.

Lastly I do not use any fans or anything else for drying it. I let it dry normally without anything. 4-6 hours is enough.

I want to add one more thing for cutting it. I tried to make a triangle and cut it, I don't like it. I tried x-acto knife 11 number. If you press on blade with wrong pressure cutting mat gets down and failed to cut. You need to be very gentle. Pressing hard on ruler but never pressure the knife. Cut it in twice times maybe. But I am trying rotary cutter now and its working perfectly.

Sorry for long post. If you interested in making your papers or you are already making them I can cheer on any pro tips. The pigeon is a bonus (sorry I don't know how to make an origami potato yet :) I wanted to share my one month experience on making papers.

Once you try Mc you never go back someone said once in a Forum.

A question. My papers are so thin right now. I have tried triple tissue once. But I think I have used too thick Mc with it and it become too thick paper as result. The pics you see is double tissue. But like in pigeon example I understood I need more thick paper. What can I use between tissues? Foil fails. I tried Kraft paper it was so hard to fold. Any tips?

Im still learning, but I would say I got pretty good at folding the bird base. Can you name me Origamis that pick up from there besides the Krane?

I also know the flapping bird and the traditional Raven

This is my recent rendition of Robert J Lang's "Black Forest Cuckoo Clock", folded from a 32x320cm rectangle of Black/Natural Kraft paper (from my IKEA stash).

The details here are AMAZING. This is a Timber plank boxed wall clock, topped with a Deer's Head, a pop open Cuckoo compartment, clean clockface with hour and minute hands, pinecone shaped counterweights and a pendulum with a leaf-shaped weight. Surrounding the box is a wreath of leaves.

All this from a single UNCUT sheet of paper - genius design indeed.

I made a 9 headed hydra from a 15x15cm uncut square. Felt like doing something absurd and tedious. Low level but it turned out quite cute.

Chill fold. Looks good with tissue foil. Love the base used here, also works well for the sailfish design in the same book.
