Does Jon Snow find belonging through duty, or does duty keep him from feeling at home? Spoiler

Spoilers for the Game of Thrones TV series.

Jon finds a place in the Night’s Watch. But even there, doing what he believes is right can leave him on his own.

That is what interests me about him. He wants to belong, yet he will risk that belonging to help Sam or the wildlings. So duty is more than a way to win approval.

I made this short video about the cost of always being the reliable one. Jon seems able to carry a lot, but less able to say what he needs. That is my reading of the character, not a diagnosis.

Does the Watch give Jon a home, a job, or both? Which relationship lets him be more than the person everyone needs something from?

This is my own video.

How would TWOTFK change if Renly and Arianne Martell were married with kids

“One year, King Robert’s brother came to visit, and she did her best to seduce him, but she was half a girl, and Lord Renly seemed more bemused than inflamed by her overtures.” — A Feast for Crows, “The Princess in the Tower”

The text doesn't give us an exact year, but it does say that Arianne was “half a girl.” I don't think she would have started seducing men when she was, like, twelve, so I think it had to be when she was fourteen, since that's when she lost her virginity. I imagine she would have started seducing men shortly after that.

For the purposes of this scenario, though, I'm going to say she's fifteen, because fourteen just seems a little young to me. She manages to seduce Renly by getting him drunk and into her bed. Some time later, she discovers that she's pregnant. She tells Renly, and he does the honorable thing and marries her.

Doran doesn't find out until afterward, and he's rather angry. His daughter has just ruined his plans to bring back the Targaryens and avenge Elia and her children. However, he does think there might be some benefits to having a Baratheon son-in-law.

Nine months later, Steffon Martell is born, named in honor of his late Baratheon grandsire. Between his birth and the beginning of A Game of Thrones, he has one more sibling: a girl named Tyene. Both children have the traditional Baratheon looks: black hair and blue eyes.

Now, I imagine neither Doran nor Arianne would let the children be caught dead in King's Landing, given the Lannister presence there. However, I do think it's possible that Robert might travel down to Storm's End to meet them. I also think it's possible that, if Jon Arryn suggested it, Summerhall might be rebuilt. Since Summerhall was a symbol of unity between the Targaryens and Dorne, perhaps its reconstruction could represent the Crown's desire to rekindle that unity.

Now, I don't think anything else would really change. Jon Arryn is poisoned, Ned becomes Hand, he discovers the truth, and the war begins. Renly is now married and has an heir, but I'm not sure whether the Stormlands and Dorne alone could take King's Landing. Nor am I sure that Doran would call his banners.

I'm sure he would like Renly, and he'd certainly love his grandchildren, but his mind might still be set on a Targaryen restoration, this time through Quentyn and Daenerys.

I think it's possible that Renly could get the Tyrells on his side this time by betrothing his daughter, Tyene, to Willas Tyrell.

Stannis would still besiege Storm's End, and that meeting between the brothers would still happen. However, do you think that, if Arianne were there, she could convince Renly to bend the knee? And if not, and Renly is killed, what happens? Would the Tyrells still side with the Lannisters? What happens to Steffon? And how would the rest of the war change?

I built the Westeros planet into an interactive Google Earth experience

Click here to access the Open Westeros project

So, I started this project 10 days ago by building a 3D King's Landing model in GQIS. Then I had the idea of building the world with the correct measurements of the planet based on the lore and fan calculations. Layer upon layer and now I have a full interactive Known World from the books of George R. R. Martin made into an open source community-built project.

I have built a bunch of stuff, like: - Atmospherics - Land textures - Height maps (baking I believe is the term of the process) - Labeling reveal algorithms (so it shows labels bases on relevance and altitude) - Roads and river lines - 3D models (currently only The Wall, Winterfell and King's Landing)

One of the aspects I'd like to expand more would be land formations. I was thinking of procedurally populate the world with hills, mountains and so on, but I still don't know what questions I should be asking to achieve this. I baked an early version of it using only data from images fans have created, but apart from that nothing like the fancy 3D mountains I've seen only that would be really cool to have.

Another one that I still haven't tackled would be to generate the rivers and bodies of water, to make them look more realistic than they are now (currently only likes from an SVG).

I'd like for the people here to just take a look, on the site and the code, and give some feedback on it.

And please, if you got interested in the project, don't hesitate in contacting me and contributing to it in the GitHub repo. The project is open source, built by a fan for fans.

Thank you for reading and taking a look!

I just finished my rewatch of the show, and in an effort to counter all the "bad after season 4" comments I see, I'm going to take some time discussing underappreciated scenes from seasons 5-8. These are all going to be more "classic" Game of Thrones scenes which don't lean too heavily on the spectacle that people accuse of becoming a crutch, so no Hardhome or Battle of the Bastards.

These scenes are generally slower and more intimate, packed with charged dialogue and consequential choices and every bit as good as what is found in seasons 1-4.

Another Recovery from Season 8 Derangement Syndrome

Post image
17 Upvotes

This is yet another example of someone rewatching Game of Thrones and realizing that the entire series is great and that they were the victim of an online hate campaign that persists to this day. Season 8 Derangement Syndrome resulted from everyone being very emotionally invested in the show, the emotional loss that results from having a popular show conclude (Sopranos, Seinfeld, Lost, etc), and a massive influence campaign that creates the perception that "everyone is saying" the same thing. Season 8 Derangement Syndrome is curable, it just takes time.

(I generally avoid /gameofthrones because of the toxicity, and general lack of insight/appreciation, but it's worth a quick glance at another recent post that expresses the same concept of the influence of online hate campaigns... the post is appropriately titled: Rewatching Game Of Thrones and Season 5 & 6 are awesome when you don’t have a bunch of people trying to convince you they aren’t)

How would you feel if this happened

George has several books he needs to finish. The Winds of Winter is obviously the top priority, followed by A Dream of Spring, more Dunk and Egg novellas, and Fire & Blood Part 2.

But let's say he finished a book and it came out tomorrow, only it wasn't The Winds of Winter. Instead, it was either Fire & Blood Part 2 or another Dunk and Egg novella. Would you be mad? And if you were, how mad would you be.

This weekend at SDCC Malaga, Kristian Nairn (Hodor) said he liked the ending of Game of Thrones, but agrees it could have been longer and with more dialogue instead of action; he also sees no problem with Daenerys' ending ("She said ten times she was going to burn King's Landing").

When Rickard Stark challenged the Mad King to trial by combat, did he do that knowing that the King’s Guard was stacked with knights like Ser Arthur Dane, Barristan and Jamie? and he’d probably have to fight one of them?
