Fun weekend projects taking scrap fabric for a patchwork style chalk bag and bucket. First time making a bucket but very happy with how it turned out.

Mostly scrap Xpac, some sailcloth, and some synthetic orange fabric I got at an art reuse store, left over fleece from making a friend golf club head covers.

Love projects that can be started and finished in a weekend

Diy draft tube

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi, I'm thinking of making a collar / draft tube for my winter sleeping bag, since I don't think Sea to Summit's own one is effective enough. I'm planning to make a U- or horseshoe-shaped down collar, but I'm a bit unsure how to attach it to the sleeping bag. I'm considering using Velcro tape on the inside of the bag, but I don't know if that would be a poor solution over time, or whether it might come loose during the night.

Alternatively, I could either hand-sew it in place before filling it, or hand-sew two pieces of fabric onto the sleeping bag with holes for buttons.

Do you have any good suggestions?

General What would you use to line a carhartt Detroit jacket type work jacket?

I’m planning on using the Yard Jacket pattern from Roughcut to make a “blanket lined” Detroit jacket type jacket and aside from cutting up a perfectly good wool blanket what would you suggest? My uneducated idea is to buy wool coating fabric but I don’t know if that’ll hold up to brutal work wear conditions or not or even if it’d be overkill.

Custom ducktape frame bag for tandem bike

Thumbnail

It's inspired from this YouTube video : https://youtu.be/Nvyujy1ySc4

It's made from corrugated plastic sheets for the perimeter, and duct tape for evervthing else, with velcro that's sewn directly to the duct tape.

The sides are made from two duct tape parts stuck to each other, looks very strong and i tested it in the shower, everything looks very water resistant. And it's also infinitely repairable with, you guessed it more duct tape.

To fasten it to the bike, I 3d printed zip tie holders that are bolted to the frame bag, and reusable zip ties secure it to the frame. I made small circular seals from an old inner tube to avoid water ingress from the bolt holes.

In total it took about a roll of duct tape, which cost about 10 euros in France, and I found some corrugated plastic at work for free.

Ducktape is surprisingly ok to sew, I added duct tape to waterproof the seams.

I'Il test it during a month and a half in Patagonia in quite rainy conditions. I made some minor improvements since I took the pictures, notably to improve watertightness of the opening sides.

Edit : Fix duct tape spelling mistake

Project Pictures Camp kitchen Organizer

I made a prototype for a kitchen organizer a while back because I wanted to solve a couple of minor issues I had with my previous bag I used for this.

• The stuff sack I used before was a bit annoying because I always had to rummage through the chaos to find anything. This is way more convenient.

• I pack most of the cooking kit even for day hikes to be able to make coffee on the trail even on shorter hikes, so I can just grab this and throw it in the daypack or the large hiking pack. No need to assemble the essentials and throw them in the stuff sack.

• I always kept forgetting my pot cozy…

This bag fits my 550ml cup/pot including a gas cartridge, the equally sized titanium mug (I use it for coffee as well as for rehydrating meals, works great because it’s double walled), a Java drip coffee filter, stove, spork and tupperware for coffee and powdered milk.

Additionally, it’s padded with aluminium coated foam like pot cozies, but a bit thicker.

Materials are PU-coated 210D nylon ripstop and a generic nylon fabric for lining.

This was initially thought as a prototype, but I’ve been using it for a while now because it works well and it seems that I’m too lazy to make a proper one.

Question foam for backpack hi-belts/ shoulder straps

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on making my own hiking backpacks and am looking into different foam options for the shoulder straps and hip belts.

EVA foam seems to be a popular choice, but it's relatively expensive, especially when you're making backpacks on a small scale. I'm wondering if there are any more affordable alternatives that still provide good comfort, support, and durability under load.

What types of foam do you use for your shoulder straps and hip belts? Do you use EVA, PE foam, PU upholstery foam, or something else?

Any advice or experience from fellow backpack makers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I used the zip works template generator. Something didn’t work correctly (probably my ability to read) so had to audible a bit when closing up the corners.

It’s a mystery box fabric, so I don’t really know what material it is. It’s perfect to experiment with though. What do you use to keep rip stop from fraying?

whiffed on the topstitch

I completely whiffed the zipper tape on this topstitch, what is my best route forward to fix this with a cleanish result?

I forgot to add extra length to the this side panel when originally cutting it out, so when attaching the zippers I kept it really close, and really misjudged it. Do I just rip it out and deal with the extra line of holes? double up the topstitch? glue it?

thank you for bearing with my noob questions!

Question Neoprene tape - chafe resistant

I used to use this in Europe and I cannot find it anywhere here in the US - it's an iron-on seam tape for neoprene (Melco is the commonly known brand) but it has small hard 'bobbles' on the outside like old-school wetsuit kneepads. Has anyone used this, or seen it on a website they can share?

The kettle pouch and spice kit are also waxed, just rubbed a stearin candle on and heated them. I see the canvas becoming stiffer as a bonus.

Project Pictures Frame Bag Experiences

I just finished my first frame bag and wanted to share my experiences.

-I bought 100x180cm cotton duck fabric (3 USD) (i guess? translate might be off) and barely used 1/4 of it. I have no idea about fabrics but seems like this cotton duck is pretty good for the price. Also paid around 2 USD for straps, velcro, zipper and stuff but also had pretty much leftover.

-As a first timer in sewing corners were a serious challenge for me. I sewed and unpicked stitches 3 times on my first corner because somehow I messed up but finally got the idea. Also broke a needle. It seems like needles can't deal with hard zippers. Makes sense. And I couldn't even count the times when the sewing machine stuck.

-Least expected part for me is the HOLY mess I created there is now thousands of threads and fabrics in all over place and all over my clothes.

-I think bag seems skewed on various sides and each corners has their unique style, it looks weird to me. This thing is the opposite of consistency. Maybe I'm over thinking about it but definitely not perfect.

-I had fun while tinkering on this since I don't start to clean up mess yet.

-I made the zipper panel first and probaly messed up while sewing zipper because now zipper part is definitely longer than rest so it curls awkwardly.

-I didn't sew on the Velcro strips. It was highly recommended on most tutorials but It seemed okay. (I just hope for the best for now)

-I sewed the side panel strap every 4cm to make it a bit customizable on mounting. At least I thought it would be.

-I got rid of the tiny bottom part as suggested on the older post and no regrets on that.

- And about the exposed shifter wires I think they should be fine since bag almost not touching the wires definitely not pushing them. Cables are probably going to be okay but they can damage the fabric over time we'll see.

Camera bag / sling

Had a go at making a camera sling bag. Everything was going fine until I out the roll top on and realised it didn't work how I wanted.

Think I should of only done single layer for the roll top, seemed to thick to roll properly. Also somehow the webbing hadn't sandwiched between the layers properly so was half hanging out. Going to re make the top and will post the finished piece. But thought I'd share this. Quite please with how everything else turned out.

Pattern made by myself.

Double direction zipper for a mans fly?

I'm in Australia so a paucity of some things.

I want to replace the existing zipper in my overpants to one that opens from both ends. The same as used on my surplus military cold weather trousers. I can buy sleeping bag zippers but I don't want to waste materials, I only need it to be 250mm long and it doesn't matter if it isn't a water resistant type as it will be inside the coverage of the waterproof jacket

Angled zippers

I’ve been practicing making the LearnMYOG Everyday Fanny Pack and feel pretty confident with the straightforward box shape/zippers. I’ve seen some bags like this Able Carry Core Sling where the zipper angles towards the front. I’m having a hard time visualizing the pattern pieces for this, anyone have some advice or a pattern that does something similar?

Question Interested in making a pack attic for this hard case.

- If this kind of post is not allowed, mods are welcome to remove! -

Hello, I use this Sheffield storage bin/hard case for equipment and I wanted to make a pack attic for it (like the one in the Yeti Gobox, 2nd pic.)

My plan is to 1) sew a few nylon mesh pouches to a fabric panel 2) attach the fabric panel to a sheet of coroplast 3) glue the fabric+coroplast panel to the underside of the Sheffield hard case's lid. The additional storage would only be for light objects.

Does this seem like a good idea? Has anyone done anything like this before? I plan to work on this when I get off of work but I'd like some input from the community.

Project Pictures Backpack lid pocket / chest pouch / shoulder bag / handlebar bag

Thumbnail

I wanted something versatile, and it's worked out well. Designed originally as a companion piece for a backpack I made earlier this year, it can function as a lid pocket or a chest pouch. Adding a few well-placed attachment points means it can also serve as a shoulder bag and as a handlebar bag for my bike.

The spacer mesh on the back works as a map pocket and the webbing that runs through on each side sits within that pocket and is adjustable using a triglide. This allows the lid pocket to "float" up if the backpack is fuller and taller.

It takes cues from things like the OMM Chest Pod. The triglide/D-ring fix on the lid pocket is an idea I lifted from a Prickly Gorse suggestion for removable waist straps. I used the Prickly Gorse rolltop handlebar bag as the origin of the pattern, adapting it to be a closed bag with a zip rather than roll-top. It needs a few bits and pieces (cord, bungee, straps) to make all the options work.

It's probably about 2-3 litres, which is all I need for accessible and delicate things like sunglasses that otherwise risk getting crushed in a roll-top backpack. Materials are leftovers from my backpack: EPX200 for the blue body, and venom gridstop eco for the sides and back, plus spacer mesh for the map pocket. Inside it's half lined with some 70D fabric to add a couple of phone-sized pockets, there's a key loop in there, and a stretch mesh pocket at the bottom half of each side that fits an earbuds case perfectly.

Question Seam tape on difficult surfaces

Hi :)
I want to make a waterproof Trousers. I want to use 3 Ply laminate and don’t need isolation.
It needs to be very durable because I need it for iceclimbing.
It would be my first project :) As an stencil I would use trousers that fit me very well.
So my Question is how do I use seamtape at very difficult spots like the zipper on front because there would be something like 3 layers of fabric. Can I just tape on the outside of the laminate. How do u waterproof something like that probably?
Or at the feet where I want to use condura as an Protection.
Can I just tape over the condura and than it’s water tight?

Made myself an everyday waist bag

Hi everyone!

I made this edc waist bag as a birthday present to myself and wanted to share it.

Materials

Ripstop PVC 600D

Lining: polyester fabric

Hardware: WJ, except the Fastex buckle on the roll-top

Waist strap: car seatbelt webbing

3D front pocket with a waterproof zipper

Velcro panel on the front for patches (as you can see, I've already lost one 😅)

Extra MOLLE webbing, so I can attach a bottle holder and side compression straps that keep everything while I'm moving

3D spacer mesh on the back panel

30 × 18 × 9 cm (about 5 L), not counting the roll-top

The sewing itself took about 20 hours. Most of the time went into developing the pattern, especially the 3D front pocket.
