Clothing Recs Quince warning

I recently bought several clothing items for my toddler from Quince. They all claimed to be Okeo Tex certified in the description. I am actively working on only buying certified clothing so this was really important to me.

The items showed up and none had an Okeo Tex label. Super sketchy. I contacted Quince and they said “the item isn’t expected to include a physical label.” So I checked with Okeo Tex and yes an actual certified product from them should definitely include a label on the product or packaging.

Anyways I wanted to warn other moms here who might be looking for safer clothing for their kids that this company seems to be doing shady practice. I’ve seen them recommended for bedding as well. Just make sure you check the labels your product comes with. Would definitely recommend Carters and its sub brands instead for clothes as all of their GOTS/Okeo Tex items have always come with the corresponding labeling.

Edit to add: please support carters and it’s brands as much as possible because I saw they are closing 150 stores and it’s literally one of the only brands that provides affordable (especially during sales which happen often) and wide range of okeo Tex / gots clothing

Clothing Recs I'm obscessed with wool now!

It all started last winter when looking for my baby girls first winter clothes. I baby wear a lot and found out wool was the best option to make sure she was snug and not overheating. Fast forward 1 year later I'm deep in the rabbit hole. I've learned not all wool is alike, I bought some cheap superwashed wool etc.. I have a wool mattress protector, wool undergarments for baby and myself, wool pijamas , pram suit, wool beanies, wool socks, etc...

My biggest purchase recently was a big organic wool double sided blanket for my bed... That's it! How did I ever sleep without it ?! I know it's expensive, but it's also a lifelong investment. I know my grandma has some wool blankets that just keep giving (if I lived in her country I'd probably ask for a few). My grandma finds this funny as people would get rid of wool blankets because it was old fashioned.

Are you hesitant on splurging on that wool blanket? If you can go for it!

Any other wool crazy people out there?

Clothing Recs I don’t know who else to go to, HELP, MOMS!

I want a 100% cotton simple bralette, in white, just like this one but COTTON. COTTON PLEASE why is this so hard??? I don’t care if it’s not super supportive or stretchy, I don’t want polyester or rayon or spandex, ITS TOO HOT. I’m in Texas. I want COTTON. I just want an easy bra that hides the nips enough when I layer it under clothes. But still BREATHES. Natural mamas who care about natural fibers…. have you found this unicorn? I’m about to crash out.

Clothing Recs Annoyed at all the polyester in Carter’s clothes

During Black Friday I bought my son a bunch of T-shirts from Carter’s. I checked what the fabric was on some of the shirts, to make sure it was 100% cotton, but I didn’t check all of them and now I’m seeing that many of them are 40% polyester and I’m so annoyed.

It is totally my fault as I did not check every shirt, but, for example the solid colors were all cotton but the shirts with the stripes, which are the same style, have polyester…!?!

There’s not much point to this besides me ranting and annoyed at the time wasted on having to go ship these back and pay for the return shipping. Make sure you check every label for each item you buy, if this matters to you.

Clothing Recs PSA: Woolino 100% merino wool sleep sacks are NOT 100% natural material- the wool yarn is coated in a plastic resin 😖

I learned on another subreddit a while back that nearly all merino wool used in textiles uses "superwashed" yarn, which is a chemical processing that strips the natural scales off the wool using chlorine bleach, then coats the fiber in a nylon-based polymer resin (Hercosett-125). It's called the Chlorine-Hercosett Process. The superwash process makes the wool machine washable, and prevents it from shrinking or felting.

Most brands will NOT state on their websites that their products use superwash wool. You have to contact them and ask about the product specifically. I contacted Woolino and asked about the 4-season sleep sack, which is advertised as 100% merino wool on the inside layer that touches baby's skin, and 100% cotton on the outside layer. They confirmed that it is indeed superwash wool. It is OEKO-TEX-100 certified, meaning that the 3rd party certification tested for and did not find measurable quantities of any of the 100 chemicals on their list. Regular polyester products can be Oeko-tex certified too, so it absolutely does not mean natural material, it just means that it's free of the 100 chemicals that they deem to be the most harmful.

As a rule of thumb, if a merino wool item says on the tag or website that it's machine washable, (and especially if it says Tumble Dry Low!), then it's almost DEFINITELY superwash. If it says Machine Wash Cold Only and Hang/Lay Flat to Dry, it MIGHT be superwash but you'll need to confirm. If it says Hand Wash Cold Only and Lay Flat to Dry, it is likely natural uncoated wool.

Also good to know, alpaca wool is almost never superwash. Sheep wool blankets could go either way (you'll have to confirm with the manufacturer), and wool rugs are almost never superwash.

Dilling brand does NOT use the chlorine-hercosett process. They use an enzymatic process that does not leave petroleum based resin coated on the yarn. They also make some baby items. All other brands that I could find that sell merino wool textiles use standard superwash yarn.

EDIT: While Dilling doesn't use conventional superwash, their yarn is still treated with a petroleum based resin. Supposedlly their chemical processing using alternative chemicals is less harmful for the employees doing it and less harmful in terms of hazardous waste, compared to conventional superwash. But I still don't think Dilling's merino wool items would be biodegradable because of the synthetic coating.

Clothing Recs I'm 9 months postpartum and just tested 10+ cotton/wool sports bras - happy to answer questions!

Post image
295 Upvotes

UPDATE: Wow, thank you all so much for your thoughtful questions and comments!! As a newbie to this Reddit thread, it's been great hearing your input and being so warmly received. Also, as a new mom, it's so fun to share product recs here, and I hope I can be a resource for other nontoxic parenting things I've tried and loved.

I'm doing my best to respond to each comment individually, but I wanted to share the final review of the bras I tested and found worth sharing. Hoping to add more to this list in the future XO https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/sustainable-sports-bras/

----

I'm a fashion editor for a sustainable lifestyle publication, and I'm also 9 months postpartum. I have struggled my entire life to find supportive sports bras (I love running, HIIT, yoga, hiking), and I've literally never found one made entirely from organic or nontoxic fabric. Also, I'm a 36D, so the organic cotton bralettes that are marketed for yoga/pilates do absolutely nothing for me.

I just finished reviewing a dozen or so organic cotton, bamboo, and wool sports bras to see if they actually work for fitness. Happy to answer any questions about my research! Sharing a few of my top findings below for anyone who may find it helpful:

  1. Cotton sports bras are best for smaller cup sizes (ideally C or less). If you're fighting gravity/dealing with deflated balloons, it's going to be hard to find one supportive enough for high-intensity training. That said, they feel great on your skin, and I love that I never get heat rash or breakouts from sweating when I wear them.
  2. Many of the bras I tried were too loose on the ribcage band, and I would get major underboob after any activity. The best ones had elastic (so not entirely nontoxic) to hold everything in.
  3. High cuts and adjustable straps!! My favorite bras & the ones I will continue wearing are cut high and have adjustable straps. This has been key for keeping everything in place so that my boobs don't fall out in downward dog, push-ups, etc.
  4. My two favorites, the ones I can actually wear for workouts, are made from bamboo and wool. I live in LA, so these materials are also great for heat/sweat.

Happy to answer any specific questions or share the brand recs (not sure if that's allowed, so I didn't include the actual brands or bras in the main post). It's a tough market out there, but brands are making more options 😅

Clothing Recs Looking for organic cotton baby clothes brands!

Hanna Andersson is mostly not organic. Primary is moving away from organic as well. Brands like Pehr are too expensive. We love Monica + Andy, Burt's Bees, and Colored Organics (but their selection is small). Wondering what other brands people are loving!

Clothing Recs Magnetic Me

I have a toddler (25 months) and I'm 24 weeks pregnant. I've just heard about this brand Magnetic me, obviously anything that's going to make navigating the newborn days with a toddler easier is enticing. But I'm not sure how I feel about baby clothes with magnets? Wondering if Mom's on here have bought them/like them/feel like they are safe?

Clothing Recs ISO toddler shoes that hold up!

We have been loyal TenLittle customers since my daughter started walking at 10 months. Now, she's almost 2 and obsessed with taking her shoes off when she's mad about being in the stroller for too long (in addition to the fact that we have to take them on and off up to 5 times a day for regular life reasons). The velcro isn't holding up, and I have already panic bought and returned some random Amazon ones that didn't even come close to fitting. Does anyone have suggestions for a different brand?

FWIW, I did reach out to Ten Little to complain, but I haven't heard back yet. So giving their customer service an F until further notice.

Clothing Recs What are we doing about 60/40 clothes?

I don’t really want to pay $5-$10 for a 100% cotton shirt that my child will inevitably ruin or grow out of in a matter of months. But is 100% cotton clothing the hill to die on? Has anyone caved to the 60/40 blends? Any input is appreciated!

edit to add: I’m currently looking at 12-18mo clothes and I do buy secondhand IF the items don’t smell like synthetic fragrance from laundry detergent but that seems to be hard to find

Clothing Recs Honest baby clothing closed

Does anyone have any more information about this? My Google results point to their “blog” where it says something about closing the site, but when I click the actual links it leads to nothing. I’m assuming they’re discontinuing their clothing line?

Huge bummer for me. My 6M son is super tall and their clothing fits his long torso so well. Does anyone have recommendations for 100% cotton baby/toddler clothes of a similar price point and quality? He needs some winter clothes!

Clothing Recs Where are we finding 100% cotton clothes for ourselves?

I’ve found good ones for kids especially through Carters but what about for ourselves? Currently looking for a cotton maternity dress for my baby shower and I feel like there are very few options and most of them look like I’m ready for the Oregon Trail lol

Clothing Recs Are crocs really that bad for foot development?

All the kids where I live wear crocs everywhere. My feed sometimes gets inundated with pediatric PT says these shoes are terrible for feet and crocs are on the list.

I’ve tried really hard to get her good quality shoes with a wide toe box and flexible which she is mostly compliant with. However, I got her a pair off buy nothing so that she had something that she could slip on when we went in the backyard and she absolutely loves them and wants to wear them everywhere. I think the main reason is her friends all wear them and they are really easy for her to put them on independently.

Are crocs really that bad for feet? I don’t want her to destroy her feet and would rather her wear her podiatrist approved shoes but is it worth the battle if they actually are okay for foot development?

Clothing Recs Mom Playground Outfits?

Does anyone have recommendations for either specific influencers to follow, or pieces that have worked for you in your life? I’m struggling to find / put together outfits for going out with my 3 very young children that aren’t super nice, aren’t just leggings or workout shorts, and aren’t polyester. It feels like I either have to spend $300 on Leset cotton pants or get cheap old navy polyester/satin pants! Please help a very tired mama of multiples feel like a human again - I used to have cute style!

Clothing Recs Seeking Europe-based baby/toddler clothing brand recommendations, that sell all non-synthetic, 100% natural fibres, etc. Must be brands based/available in Europe (though can include UK), as customs fees aren't worth it from outside. Thanks!!

Clothing Recs FTM Please help decide on sleep sacks and swaddles

FTM mom here. Baby due in late November. Bay area winter.

Here is what I plan on getting - 2 sleep sacks and 2 swaddle blankets

Is that enough? Should I skip the 0-6 month sleep sacks and buy more swaddle blankets? I started reading in other threads that newborns can't use sleep sacks?

Would love to hear some feedback!

Clothing Recs Mom clothes

I was wondering where are we getting clothes for ourselves. I am having a hard time feeling cute after having babies and donated a bunch of my cute /funky synthetic clothes to switch to natural fibers. However it’s hard to find cute natural fiber clothes that aren’t basic. I’m also just having a hard time finding clothes that feel like my style postpartum as I don’t find jeans comfy as a SAHM. Would love any recommendations!

Clothing Recs highly specific toddler girl underwear request (cotton/spandex, full coverage brief)

my freshly 2 year old has been very picky about underwear, i think she keeps getting wedgies. we had the cat&jack 100% cotton bikinis for our first child, but our toddler has hated them.

i love the fabric of the Q for Quinn 98% organic cotton/2% spandex options (Luna/Sophie) but the cuts didn’t work for my child. I think the cut of the briefs from Hanna Anderson would be perfect for her, BUT the smallest size is still kinda big on her, AND i feel like the 100% cotton doesn’t have the right stretch to stop her from getting wedgies. she is VERY sensitive!

any ideas? i think something that is full coverage, with majority cotton and a hint of spandex would be perfect for her. she’s either a 2/3T or 3/4T depending on how the sizing runs.

Clothing Recs Rain boots ? Drop your fav brand

We’ve been wearing bundgaaard rain boots but to be honest I can’t afford getting a new pair every year and they’re impossible to find second hand.

What brands do you swear by for nature loving kiddos

Clothing Recs Baby socks with 0% polyester or nylon

I have searched and searched and can't find a single pair of baby socks that has no polyester or nylon. I have been willing to budge on a lot of things after becoming a mom, but plastic clothing is not one of those things. I understand it's for stretchyness or longevity or whatever. I am okay with a minimal amount of spandex.

Does such a thing exist???

Clothing Recs Really needing toddler shoe suggestions for the summer

My daughter is 20 months old and has been walking since 11 months. It’s HOTTT where we live. Year round, actually, not even just the summer. I’ve had her in wide toe box shoes from the beginning , most days she wears the ten little rubber sandals. We have some see Kai run sneakers but her feet are sooooo hot and sweaty when she takes them off that I just feel bad. Lately I’ve been feeling like she trips a lot, I want to make sure the shoes she’s wearing aren’t contributing to this. Yesterday she tripped and smacked her forehead on concrete; I know it happens and is unavoidable but I swear this girl always has some kind of bruise, bump, or scrape on her head or face somewhere and I’m so sick of it 💔

I am just desperate for good, easy to put on shoes that will support her and let her feel supported as she runs and climbs to no end!!! They don’t have to be crunchy or granola, I just trust this community most. Just good supportive shoes for a busy toddler. Thank you in advance!

Clothing Recs 100% Cotton Bras?

I am searching for a non-or low toxic bra that can be every day, wire or no wire, molded cups or no cups, nip showing or not showing. I feel like I can't find anything close to what I'm looking for, since most bras that have cotton in them refer to the OUTSIDE of the cup, and not the inside lining. I am simply trying to minimize my skin contact to polyester or other synthetic, for various reasons. The only thing I have found was a bralette that's 97% cotton from Target that's basically loungewear and not very supportive (nips out loud and proud).

I previously saw a thread on this sub Reddit from 3 years ago about cotton bras but most of those suggestions were sites that either closed down or are not available anymore.

Would love to hear from anyone's experience! Bonus if I could find a rec for a bra I could wear to work (I can't have my nips showing lol)

Clothing Recs First winter boots for early walker

Our baby is about to start walking independently (9 months). She’s been walking on one hand for the past three weeks (including stairs?!?!) already. Definitely wasn’t prepared for that lol

The thing is that we live in California and are traveling to NYC and the Midwest for all upcoming holidays for a total of four weeks. It’ll be colder than ever for her and she most likely wants to do some walking. I know flexible shoes are important for early walkers but I honestly don’t know where to get winter boots that are warm (hopefully weather proof and fine for snow) and good for development. Any recommendations?

Clothing Recs Best warm winter coat for toddlers

My first baby just turned 1 and we live in Chicago where the winters can get super cold. I’m looking for recs for warm winter jackets for her that are Oeko-Tex certified
