lyric discussion Does anyone else save lyrics?

I love lyrics...I always have. For me, it's the story of the song, the meaning, the message. I especially love wordy complicated lyrics... lol

(I just posted this part on another sub which made me think of this. I hear the lyrics, my husband hears the music, together we hear the song ❤️)

Because of my love of lyrics, I started writing down my favorites in a journal. Anytime I hear a lyric I like, I copy the lyrics, along with the artist and song title, in the journal. Every once in a while I'll thumb through it and it's like visiting old friends.

Does anyone else do something like this? This isn't something I've told my family (I've mentioned it to my husband but everytime I do he acts like it's the first time he's heard it 😂)

lyric discussion Why Your Lyrics Never Paint A Picture

I used to think good lyrics took talent. Turns out it's mostly fundamentals.

I used to just write down the feeling straight, lines like "I'm so sad." Problem was, that could've meant anything. End result: nobody had anything to actually picture.

Then I looked at how The Weeknd writes, and one thing stood out immediately.

He never writes the feeling. He writes the scene. He's not telling you how to feel. He's showing you something specific, and your brain does the feeling part on its own.

You can clearly see this in these songs:

The Hills [Verse 1]

Your man on the road, he doin' promo
You said, "Keep our business on the low-low"
I'm just tryna get you out the friend zone
'Cause you look even better than the photos

Baptized in Fear [Verse 1]

I fell asleep in the tub, I was met with paralysis
My foot hit the faucet, water started flowing in
Couldn't scream for help, I just slowly felt the pressure hit
Moving one toe was the only form of motion left

The exercise that got me there:

  1. Write the line's message in one plain sentence. The moment, and the feeling.
  2. List 5 physical things that could represent that feeling. Loneliness could be an empty chair, a phone on silent, a porch light left on.
  3. Pick 2 of those and describe them with something you can see, hear, feel, or smell. Not the emotion. The detail.

Worry about the rhyme last. The image is what carries the line.

What's your approach when you're trying to make a verse more visual? Do you have a method, or do you just chase the right line until something clicks?

lyric discussion Pink Blush by Dolly Babe "bumboclaat"

I've been hearing this song a lot lately. In it, Dolly Babe says "he want to lick my bumboclaat" this means bum cloth or essentially toilet paper in Jamaican Patwah. This is nasty as fuck. Why does she say this?

lyric discussion Give me a lyric you had wrong that you think is better than the original

I have a lot but I’ll go with the opening line of Lyin’ Eyes by the Eagles. I always thought it was “Pretty girls seem to find out early, how to open doors with just a smile.” It’s city girls not pretty girls. Pretty girls makes so much more sense and still fits with the length of the original word.

lyric discussion Unfaithful by Rihanna

If Unfaithful was written from the guy’s perspective, there’s one line that’s a lot more sad.

She might as well take a gun and put it to my head. Get it over with.

lyric discussion Back-Handed Compliments

What are some classic back-handed compliments you’ve heard in songs. I’ll start.

- You ain’t a beauty, but hey you’re alright.

- It’s not you it’s me. I just don’t like you.

I came across this song watching Ride or Die S1E6 on Prime - and while the storyline and plot was emotionally on point - it's the lyrics of this song that elicited an emotion. Brought me to tears.

lyric discussion How do you come up with a music video when the lyrics are not very visual?

Stuck on this right now. The song has a clear feeling and story but almost none of the lyrics describe actual places or events.

Sad lyric = person looking sad.

Line about leaving = someone walking away.

You get the idea 😂

How do you translate the feeling of a song into an actual concept?

I have been thinking about feeding the lyrics and overall mood just to brainstorm scenes and build a rough shot list and then taking the useful ideas from there. Any idea for turning a song’s lyrics, genre and mood into scenes, a storyline and a shot list?

lyric discussion Papa_ Paul Anka

This is one of my iconic songs. Despite the simplicity of its lyrics, it carries deep meanings, touches the heart, and invites reflection on the cycle of life and the suffering inherent in it; the love of parents is something instinctive, and the exceptional case is not loving them. But with time, this love turns into an unbearable pain: the pain of watching them grow old, watching their health fade away, and expecting them to leave you soon.

Dear reader, if you have made it this far, just tell me: what is the solution to escaping this pain? Is not having children a logical solution? Or is it simply a change in the way of avoiding pain? My chest is heavy with this thought.

Lyrics:

Everyday my papa would work

To help to make ends meet

To see that we would eat

Keep those shoes upon my feet

Every night my papa would take and

Tuck me in my bed

Kiss me on my head

After all my prayers were said

Growing up with him was easy

Time just flew on by

The years began to fly

He aged and so did I

I could tell

That mama wasn't well

Papa knew and deep down so did she, so did she

When she died

Papa broke down and cried

All he said was: "God, why not take me?"

Every night he sat there sleeping in his walking chair

He never went upstairs

All because she wasn't there

Then one day my Papa said:

"Son, I'm proud the way you've grown

Make it on your own. Oh, I'll be O.K. alone."

Every time I kiss my children

Papa's words ring true

Your children live through you

They'll grow and leave you, too

I remember every word my papa used to say

I live that every day

He taught me well that way

Every night, my papa would take me

Tuck me in my bed

Kiss me on my head

All my prayers were said

I have searched for so long for the lyrics to “Santa Nicola” by Lou Monte but I just haven’t been able to find them. Is anyone some sort of master at finding lyrics across the internet and could you send them?

I can't find the lyrics to the song online, on specialized forums, or even on GPT and Gemini chat, and even the AIs couldn't find anything.

I'm not asking for a translation (I know how to do that), just the original lyrics, please.

I want to make an animatic to this song but I cannot find the lyrics ANYWHERE

A lot of the words are clear and then some of them are just muddied. Can someone perhaps help me fill in the blanks?
