I'm East Asian, travelling here with my partner. We have never gone on vacation as adults as we live a pretty modest lifestyle back home and neither of us make a lot. We finally saved enough and decided to visit Portugal, specifically Lisbon and Porto for one week. So far, by and large, we've had a really great time here and the large majority of the people we talked to have been really pleasant and friendly!
As a tourist, I am also trying to get a better understanding the rising political climate in Europe surrounding housing and living costs so that I can be mindful of how locals here are probably feeling.
As a Canadian, I can only applaud you for standing up. The future also looks abysmal over there if you don't have formal education so I feel like I can empathize with this movement.
That being said- we have unfortunately experienced a few instances both in Lisbon and Porto that left us a bit confused and uncomfortable. Luckily, it's just verbal remarks. So far, there have been 3 separate occasions where my partner and I are walking and a group of young men (probably 20-30 years old) will utter "Konichiwa" or "Nihao" as they see us walk by and chuckle. One of those groups of men were actually servers for a restaurant in Porto standing out front, though I wish I recalled the restaurant name.
I usually expect prejudice from older people back home, the young people in Canada by and large are pretty respectful when it comes to diversity so it caught me off guard. Unfortunately, it's been affecting our trip and our mood a little bit, though we're still enjoying everything.
How common is this behaviour typically? Did we just run into some bad eggs?
Edit: adjusted some wording. reworded to "experienced a few instances that left us confused" instead of "experienced some casual racism". also added some context below
