Duo-App Showcase I turned iPhone Duo into a fridge

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Was inspired by the idea of Duo-Man and all the other great apps coming to iPhone Duo, so I decided to build something silly.

Smash all kinds of products, or just organize your stuff however you want. Decorate the fridge with photos of your loved ones, magnetic letters, or leave some notes.

I somehow doubt Apple will approve this, but I still wanted to make something fun ;)

Update:
PHRIDGE is finally coming on October 23, and it’ll be free!

Duo-App Showcase Sill: your Mac on your iPhone Duo. Optimized for Day 1 compatibility for iPhone Duo. Free and open source!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello [r/iPhoneDuo](r/iPhoneDuo)! I am really excited to share a project that is near and dear to my heart: Sill, my first iOS app, now on the App Store, and I designed it for the iPhone Duo first. It shows any window from your Mac on your Duo and lets you use it there. Open flat, your Mac fills the inner display. Half open, it is a laptop, with the picture above the fold and the trackpad and keys below. Closed, Sill runs on the cover display. Fold or unfold mid-session and the layout follows the hinge, nothing you touch sits on the fold, and the status bar gets out of the way while you stream on the inner display. The two apps together are under 7 MB to download and about 10 MB installed, but pack quite a punch. Now, for the reason I wanted to work on this project, what it does that is unique compared to other remote desktop apps for iOS and Mac, and why I went with a free and open source model.

Apple famously said [no](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOYikXbC6Fs) at WWDC 2018: macOS and iOS were going to be kept separate. Mac apps could functionally run on an iPad, but Apple chose to segment their products to protect the experience they wanted, and the dream of using Mac apps on an iPad was never going to be realized, by design. So today, that no turns into a yes.

Sill shows any window from your Mac, or its whole desktop, on your iPhone or iPad, and lets you use it with touch, a keyboard, an on-screen trackpad or Apple Pencil. Unlike remote desktop apps that squeeze a whole screen into a viewport, Sill streams one window at a time, resized to fit your device, with the Mac's windows, apps and menus as native controls on the device. It streams straight from your Mac to your device over your own network, so there is no account to create and no server in between. You pair each device once, and every connection is encrypted. Both parts are free: the Sill app for iPhone and iPad, and Sill for Mac.

Streaming

* Any single Mac window, or the whole desktop, on your iPhone or iPad
* Hardware HEVC video, up to 120 fps on ProMotion screens (60 elsewhere); the rate follows each device
* Seven quality presets, from Low (4 Mbps) to Extreme (150 Mbps), plus Resolution, a frame-rate limit and Prioritize Encoding Speed
* Text size (Aa): resizes the Mac window to fit your screen, so text is the size you want
* Optional virtual display: a window streams from its own HiDPI display, sized to your device, and keeps updating even when covered on the Mac; full-screen video works too

Controls

* Touch: tap to click, drag to scroll with momentum, touch and hold to right-click
* Apple Pencil as the mouse, with hover
* Software and hardware keyboards, with ⌘, ⌃ and ⌥ shortcuts, plus a key row with latching modifiers and a Spotlight key
* Laptop layout when you hold the device upright: the picture on top, a key row and a trackpad (two-finger scroll, two-finger tap, hold then drag, three-finger gestures for Mission Control, App Exposé, switching Spaces, Apps and Show Desktop)
* Dedicated iPhone and iPad layouts, and it's made for iPhone Duo: open it flat and your Mac fills the inner display; half open, it's a laptop with the picture above the fold and the trackpad and keys below; closed, Sill runs on the cover display. Nothing you touch sits on the fold.
* Each Mac app's menus (File, Edit, View, etc.) on your device: in the iPad's own menu bar on iPadOS 26, or behind a Menus button
* Window thumbnails: switch with a tap; hold one for close, minimize and full screen; drag to reorder
* An Apps drawer: open windows and every installed app, with search, and it launches apps

Connecting

* Finds your Mac automatically; each Mac shows how it's reached: Wired, Wi-Fi, Direct or Remote
* USB cable support, and a live session moves between the cable and Wi-Fi without dropping
* Direct Wireless Connection (optional), for when you and your Mac don't share a network
* Remote Access from anywhere through your own VPN, such as Tailscale, or a port forward
* Away from home, a session starts at a quality a slower connection can carry, your Mac tells you when the link can't keep up and suggests one it can, and when you get home the session moves back to your home network by itself
* Pairing: every connection encrypted with TLS 1.3; pair each device once by QR code or a 12-digit code, and a USB cable pairs by itself; Require pairing is on by default
* The Mac keeps its keys in the protected part of its keychain that only Sill can read

Sill for Mac

* A ~7 MB menu bar app with a live status card: each device, its frame rate and latency
* Settings: General, Devices, Streaming, Virtual Display, Remote Access and Permissions
* Launch at Login, a log window, and an update check that tells you when a new version is out
* A notarized disk image download from getsill.app

Sill for iPhone and iPad

* A Settings panel that changes the Mac's stream settings and shows the connection and latency
* A first-run tour, and Take the Tour to replay it
* Tells you when the Mac or the device needs an update

Free and open source (Apache 2.0), with a tip jar through GitHub Sponsors. No account, no servers, no tracking: video goes straight from your Mac to your device.

Since Sill has no operating costs, I wanted the source to be open for the community to use and mold however they need, forever. And since it's open source, I figured I might as well make it free. Tips support the time I put into it and the Apple developer fees.

Needs a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later, and an iPhone or iPad on iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later.

Duo-App Showcase I converted the iPhone Duo into a PokéDex!

Hi all, I’m the developer. I’ve been building DexDuo, a fan-made Dex app designed around the iPhone Duo’s fold, and wanted to share it here first since you’re the people who’ll actually use the phone or are interested.

How it uses the Duo

  • Closed: the outer screen becomes the red lid, with the big blue lens drawn right around the real camera.
  • Unfold it: the Dex powers on across both halves, sprite screen on the left, keypad and description on the right, split exactly on the fold. A robot voice reads the entry and the blue lens flashes with it.
  • Fold it halfway: a data screen sweeps open with stats, abilities, moves, evolutions, type matchups and where to find it. Open it flat and you’re back to the keypad.

Other stuff

  • All 1,025 entries, in English and Spanish (voice included), and it works offline.
  • Track catches per game across 37 regional Dexes. Each completed Dex earns its own region trophy, with a little celebration.
  • Team builder with shared weaknesses, and a silhouette quiz (like the anime!)
  • Works on any iPhone too: tap the lid to open it, and turn sideways to see both halves.

Price: free. An optional one-time Plus unlock adds tracking, trophies, the team builder, case colors, extra voices and iCloud sync. No ads, no subscription, no tracking.

The app is already on the App Store: intrapixel.com/dexduo

I’d love feedback from future Duo owners:

  1. Does the halfway fold for details feel natural, or would you rather have a different pose do something?
  2. What else should the outer screen do while it’s closed?

Unofficial fan-made app, not affiliated with Nintendo, The Pokémon Company or Game Freak.

Duo-App Showcase Saw a post a while ago showcasing a Pokedex app. I asked for it to be made open-source but was ignored. So I made my own. It’s open source and has a machine learning model so you can point your camera at an image of a pokemon and get its pokedex entry.

Duo-App Showcase I built a teleprompter app that follows your voice and records both cameras at once. Looking for beta testers (free lifetime sub when the foldable iPhone drops)

https://reddit.com/link/1x5xvpk/video/x51l8rd5zgvh1/player

Hey all, I’ve been building an iPhone app called DuoPrompt on nights and weekends and it’s finally at the point where I need real people to break it.

The video is my first real test. My daughter and wife did a spider web for Halloween, so I filmed it with the back camera while my face sat in the corner reading the script. One take, no editing.

What it does:

  • Follows your voice. The script highlights each word as you say it. If you pause, it waits. If you skip a line or ad-lib, it catches up. No more chasing a scroll speed.
  • Duo Camera. Front and back cameras go into one video. Show what you’re talking about full screen with your reactions in a corner bubble. You can drag the bubble anywhere and resize it.
  • On-screen graphics from your script. Write a cue like [show: Promo code] in your script and a text box, image or QR code pops up when you say that line. The cue never shows in the video.
  • The usual teleprompter stuff: adjustable transparency so you can see through the text, mirror mode for glass rigs, text size, voice isolation and a manual pace if you don’t want voice follow.

Why “Duo”: I’m building this with the foldable iPhone in mind. The plan is to be one of the first teleprompter apps made for the fold at launch, with the script on one side and your camera and controls on the other. Right now it runs on regular iPhones.

The beta deal: If you test it now and send me honest feedback (bugs, things that confused you, features you’d want), you get a free lifetime Pro subscription when the foldable version launches. No catch. I just want people using it before it’s public.

I’m looking for:

  • Anyone who films talking-head content: YouTube, TikTok, Reels, real estate walkthroughs, product demos, coaches, interviewers, teachers.
  • People who’ve given up on teleprompters because the scrolling never matched their pace
  • People who’ll actually tell me what sucks

Comment or DM me and I’ll send the TestFlight link.

Thanks for reading. Roast it, I can take it.

Or if you just want to be notified at launch getduoprompt.com drop your email and Ill send you a 50% off code at launch. Win-Win-Win

Duo-App Showcase I'm building a free open-source browser for the iPhone Duo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Like a lot of you, I'm not a fan of Safari putting the controls on the right side of the outer screen. It wastes tons of screen space.

So I decided to build my own browser called DuoBrowser.
It uses WebKit (same engine as Safari), keeps the address bar at the bottom, and uses javascript to adjust website elements that would otherwise get stuck behind the camera cutout.

It's still early, but it's working pretty well so far.
I'm also making it open source so anyone can contribute, submit PRs, fix bugs, or suggest improvements. It'll be 100% free. No ads, subscriptions or anything like that.

I'm sure Apple will eventually improve Safari for the Duo and make this obsolete, but until then I figured why not build something that fixes the problem now.

I started last night so plan to have testflight setup soon. I see others are doing similar things but will be charging money so figured a free duo community browser is a lot more appealing.

Duo-App Showcase Showcase: Twofold, classic games designed for iPhone Duo

Post image
78 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm a solo developer and I've built Twofold, a set of classic games for two people to play on iPhone Duo.

The fold does the work a cardboard screen does in a board game. Half-fold the Duo and the raised screen covers your board like the lid of a game box, while your side lies flat in front of you. When your turn is over, fold it shut. The outer screen tells the next player it's their turn, and their side stays covered when they open it until they tap Reveal. You never have to look away or cover the screen with your hand.

The games:

- Broadside: hide your fleet and sink your opponent's

- Who's Who: ask yes or no questions to find their secret person

- Liar's Dice: hide your dice, raise the bid and call their bluff (2 to 4 players)

- Codebreaker: hide a colour code and crack your opponent's in fewer guesses

- Fog of War: chess where you only see what your pieces can reach

- Chess and Four in a Row: lay the Duo flat between you

Every game also has a computer opponent on Easy, Medium or Hard, and it runs on any iPhone or iPad, where a Pass button stands in for the fold.

You can try every game once for free. After that it's US$1.99 to unlock a game or US$4.99 for all of them, including the games I add later. It's a one-time purchase, with no ads and no account.

It's on pre-order now and comes out on 23 October, the same day as the Duo. Crazy Eights is next, with more games for three and four players after that.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6816330259

Site: https://www.twofold.games

I'd love to hear what you think, and which games you'd want to play on the Duo.

Duo-App Showcase Hatch & Smash

Fold to hatch, unfold to smash.

A pocket-sized Kaiju you raise on a tiny retro screen, and the rampage waiting inside when you open it up.

I'm excited to get the iPhone Duo! Hoping I can get the pre order locked down this Friday, so I can test my game haha. This is just a really quick demo trailer I threw together in like 20 min.

Once the iPhone Duo was announced I got really inspired to make a game that utilizes the fold feature. I really liked the idea of the front display is a simple quick game to pass time while you are on the go. Then when you open it, you get a larger more in-depth mode that rewards you for playing the folded mode.

So I am like brand new to making and designing any kind of mobile game so any critiques or notes are always appreciated! I am not by any means trying to be some knowledgable mobile game developer. A lot of resources out there, so I just really wanted to try something new, and make a game that I would want to play on my iPhone Duo.

Duo-App Showcase Wide Web: full screen Safari for iPhone Duo | looking for beta testers

Post image

I'm seeking TestFlight testers for my app Wide Web. The app expands Safari to be full screen on the outer display and expands content over into the side Control Strip when in split screen on the inner display.

The app has had some growing pains. It works perfectly in simulator. But I have received reports of it not working on-device.

Would love some testers.

v1.2 has been submitted for review and will hopefully be live soon.

This will be great to play on the Duo.

Also solidifies the choice of 512gb for me. I see more AAA games making their way to iOS. I personally don’t think 256gb will be enough to fully take advantage of what the Duo will encourage us to do, that we didn’t do on smaller slab devices before.

Duo-App Showcase Emura: an emulator made for every way you fold the Duo

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

Hi, solo dev here. Emura plays your own Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS and 3DS games, and the Duo got special treatment: every system has its own layout, and it follows the hinge as you fold. Half-fold it, open it like a book, lay it flat: the game moves with you.

A few things I'm proud of:

- 3DS at up to 60 fps on iPhone Air *

- No BIOS or system files needed

- 3DS extras work:

- your steps become Play Coins

- the camera scans in-game QR codes

- the mic works when a game asks you to blow or speak

- motion controls use the iPhone's sensors

- game updates and DLC install

- Every system plays free, no ads

Now a little game. These pictures come from the simulator, because I don't have a Duo yet. So: who posts the first real photo of Emura running on a Duo? Show me your best fold in the comments. Bonus points for the weirdest way to hold it.

Public beta on TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/mXYgEbAz

Website: https://emuraapp.com

News, feedback and bug reports: r/EmuraApp

*My own testing on iPhone Air with the speed limit off: median 135 fps across 15 scenes from 11 3DS games (about 2x full speed), the heaviest scene still at 71 fps. Speed depends on the game and the device.

Emura is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo. The games in the pictures are made up for the screenshots.

Duo-App Showcase Lake Coloring app is ready for the Duo (and so am I 🤩)

Hi! I’m Anja, co-founder of Lake. If you don’t know it yet, Lake is a coloring app for adults with illustrations made by real artists (no AI art here!) and the artists get a share of the revenue.

Personally I’m very excited about the iPhone Duo. I have an iPhone and two iPads and I color on all of them, but I always switch to the iPad for the detailed pages, because the phone is just too small. We’ve noticed the same with lots of our users.

So of course we were all hyped and jumped right into redesigning Lake for the Duo, for both the outer and the inner screen. When you unfold it, you get a much bigger canvas and more space for the artwork, and your tools are still easy to reach. You don’t need a pencil, but we’ll add Apple Pencil support as soon as it’s available on the Duo. Btw, are you all planning to get one?

If you have any questions, ask me here!

Duo-App Showcase Prismatic Music: give every song you own its own performance

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Why I built it

Streaming is how I discover new music. But for the albums that mean the most to me, I want to own. Owning an album means it stays yours, even when it disappears from a streaming catalog.

The apps for music you own haven't kept up, though. Streaming apps have animated artwork, synced lyrics and all the native integrations like CarPlay, widgets, Siri. I brought all that to Prismatic.

What it does differently

Every song in your library gets an Aura, its own music visualizer, colored by the album art and moving with the music. You can choose when to show it, and have it as the players background, behind the lyrics or even AirPlay to a TV. The visualization is driven by analyzing the full song structure, so the visualizers do more than just react, they build anticipation and follow the full song.

On the Duo

We listen to music in so many ways. Sometimes it's on in the background while you work; sometimes you're completely lost in an album. The Duo's postures fit that perfectly, so Prismatic adapts to each one:

  • Closed: the full player on the cover.
  • Tent: stand it up, and your lyrics go full screen.
  • Book: lyrics on one page, the player on the other.
  • Open: the whole song, wide, with its Aura behind it.
  • Tabletop: lyrics up top, controls below.

Would love feedback and people’s thoughts!

Duo-App Showcase How I designed my RSS news reader (Riff) around the iPhone Duo's outer and inner screens

Thumbnail
gallery
51 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

With the first iPhone Duo deliveries arriving this week, I wanted to share how I adapted my iPhone news reader, Riff (listed as Riff News on the App Store), to take advantage of both the 5.4-inch outer screen and the unfolded inner display instead of just stretching a standard phone layout.

I originally built Riff because I wanted a news reader that adapts to my reading habits without bouncing me to a thousand mobile websites covered in cookie banners. Instead of a dense list of tiny headlines, your sources arrive as full-screen cards that you swipe through, and when a headline grabs you, you scroll down to read the clean article text right inside the app with zero ads.

When designing for the iPhone Duo, the two screens naturally mapped to two very different reading postures:

  1. Folded on the outer screen (one-handed on the move):

Because the outer screen is wider and shorter than a regular iPhone, reaching for a bottom toolbar feels awkward when walking or holding a subway rail. On the outer display, Riff moves all primary controls into a vertical strip along the right edge, right under your thumb: switching between your full mix and playlists, saving to your offline Watchlist, triggering an on-demand Apple Intelligence summary, starting the audio listen mode, or opening the "Subject" view.

  1. Unfolded on the inner screen (two-column overview):

When you unfold the Duo, the layout follows the device's native unfold animation: the card you were reading stays anchored on the right side of the screen (along with the right-hand action strip) with a real glass transparency effect, while the left side opens up to show either your upcoming mix or the "Subject" panel (which pulls together how other sources are covering the same event) right beside the article.

A few quick details on what Riff does under the hood:

- It's an RSS reader at heart: pick from a built-in catalog of 1,000+ sources (English and French) or paste any site URL / RSS feed, with OPML export anytime.

- On-device Apple Intelligence only on request: tapping the Riff button writes a short summary right above the original text (and translates it into your app's language if needed). Nothing is summarized automatically, and articles are never rewritten.

- No account, no Riff server, no trackers: your iPhone fetches feeds directly from publishers, and your feeds, local "For You" mix, custom Playlists, and offline reading list sync through your private iCloud.

The first 20 cards are free to try the flow on both screens, followed by a 14-day free trial, then a monthly or yearly App Store subscription.

Overview & App Store link: https://riff.watch/en/

For those getting their Duo this week, I'd love your feedback on the right-hand thumb strip on the outer display and how the unfolded transition feels in hand!
