Discussion Weekly /r/iOSGaming Discussion: What have you been playing lately and what do you recommend?

Please use this thread to discuss whatever iOS games you've been playing lately. They don't have to be new games, they can be old games and they do not have to be iOS original titles!

As long as it's an iOS game it belongs in here. Make sure to put the name(s) of the game(s) in bold to make it easier for people skimming the thread to see what you're talking about, and if you'd like to make it really convenient turn the game name into a hyperlink that sends people directly to the App Store!

To keep track of the thread, the comments are sorted by "new" by default.

Lastly, Rule #3: "No Dev Self-Promotion Outside Saturdays" applies at all times for this thread, even if it's actually Saturday.

Developer Saturday (Megathread) [Megathread] Developer Saturday Showcase: October 24, 2026 šŸ“±

HelloĀ r/iOSGaming! Welcome to another Developer Saturday showcase! In this megathread, iOS developers will be able share their games freely without breaking the subreddit's "no self-promo" rule. Please read the following guidelines carefully before participating:

  • Developer Saturday will run betweenĀ 12:00 AM to 11:59PM ET (UTC-5).
  • Respect is expected at all times.Ā You're welcome to share your opinions and even disagree with others, but harassment, taunting, or other toxic behavior toward devs, mods, or other community members will not be tolerated.
  • If you receive an AutoModerator comment saying you don't have enough karma, your account is too new, or that your CQS level is low,Ā we won't override the removal because these restrictions are meant to be spam detterents.

DEVELOPERS:

  • All promo comments must have [DEV] at the beginning.Ā We need it with the brackets for AutoModerator purposes, so please don't change the formatting.
  • All promo comments must include an App Store or TestFlight link. Please share the raw link (not hidden under text). Playstore links or links to other gaming stores are not allowed.
  • Only officially released iOS games may be shared.Ā This is not the place to promote non-gaming apps, non-iOS apps, Devvit apps, standalone websites, Discord servers, subreddits, livestreams, fundraisers, or social media pages. However, you may include a website or social media link with your game's self-promo comment.
  • Only games NEWLY RELEASED or have a NEW MAJOR UPDATE in OCTOBER may be promoted.Ā Personal milestones (ex: reaching X downloads, earning X amount of pay, recieving high reviews, etc), while commendable, are not an eligible reason for promotion. Additionally, "major" updates are those that introduce new features or content that greatly expands the game. Routine updates (ex: bug fixes, performance improvements, making the game free, language / region additions, and other minor changes) are also not eligible for promotion.
  • You MUST DISCLOSE whether or not AI was used to create the game.Ā If AI was used, you must also explain how it was implemented and/or what assets were created with it (ex: code, illustrations, music, etc). If AI wasn't used in the development of the game, please just state, "No AI was used." Also, don't fluff up your disclosure by adding personal / emotional reasons on why you did (or didn't) use AI.
  • You may only make one top-level comment per Saturday.Ā However, you can share several games in the same comment if they also meet the above criteria. Attempting to make multiple self-promo comments on this megathread will result in all of them getting removed.

GAMERS / REVIEWERS:

  • You may only make second-level or lower (reply) comments.Ā This means you can reply to a dev or another user's comment, but you may not create a top-level (standalone) comment.
  • Constructive feedback is welcome.Ā You may leave comments that can help devs learn what they did right with their games and what could be improved, but low-effort responses (such as simply calling something "AI slop") will be removed.
  • This is not the place to ask for game suggestions.Ā This megathread is for devs to promote their iOS games. If you're looking for recommendations on what to play next, check out the community's weekly "What Have You Been Playing Lately?" megathread or create your own request post on the main subreddit.

That's it! We're still refining these guidelines, but for now these are the requirements developers must meet in order to ensure a successful self-promo comment this week. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us via modmail. Thanks for your cooperation, everyone!

New Release No Man’s Sky out now in Australia

Post image
35 Upvotes

Looks like Australia got it early, no cross save yet but that’s more likely due to earlier release.

Works well on an m4 iPad Pro, has 30, 40, 60 and uncapped frame rate options. Playing touch and with an MFI controller, touch is good, MFI feels as native as any console.

Request What are the top tier pure-iOS games?

I’m talking the stuff that thrives on mobile. No controller needed, no ā€œthis would be better on consoleā€, not gimmicky stuff like Words With Friends, just straight up awesome genuine gaming experiences. Dead Cells is good on mobile but better on a PC, for instance.

I’ve got a pretty clean Mount Rushmore of:
1. Infinity Blade
2. Balatro
3. Dawncaster
4. Slay the Spire

What am I missing? I feel like finding iOS games worth your time is so much harder than the other platforms, and in my old age it’s easier to find time on the can than on the couch. I’m hoping there are some greats out there that I’ve overlooked.

Personal preference, I don’t love action. Reflexes and such are so tough on a phone instead of a controller. Are there any that are so well done that they’re still great even despite that?

My first ever card game purchase (with the exception of Balatro) and I’ve just been having so much fun with it. Any other games like this? I heard good things about Slay The Spire but I know STP 2 came out on other platforms recently and I don’t really want to buy an outdated game; if I’m wrong the first game is still good and not outdated please let me know!

Question What are some great browser based games?

As a Duo user finding optimised games are few and far between as it currently stands.

I’ve been thinking if Safari is optimised then browser based games might be an idea.

What are some good browser based games that you would recommend?

P.s - Don’t recommend Torn as I got over my addiction for that!

New Release A mini review/recommendation for Mika: Dungeon Backpacker - a new backpack manager roguelite.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just wanted to share this game that just released a few days ago and that I haven’t seen anyone mention yet (I have zero affiliation with it, to be clear): Mika: Dungeon Backpacker

I like backpack management games like Backpack Brawl (which I enjoy but dislike the monetization of) or Backpack Battles (no portrait, no go for me), so I was curious to check this out since it plays in portrait and has (so far at least) less annoying monetization. Plus I like the art style a lot more.

I’ve only been playing for a couple days, but so far I’ve been enjoying it a lot.

The game uses a ā€œworld - stageā€ system, each stage is a dungeon with a number of floors, with each new floor opening with a shop where you can buy items to add to your backpack (different weapons, potions, runes, extra slots, etc). You can combine the same items to level them up, and you get access to more and more powerful items as you progress.

Each floor is broken into tiles with random events (combat, chests, buffs, traps, etc), once you find the exit you have to fight a floor boss, a bigger boss on the last floor, and the biggest boss on the last floor of the last stage of each world.

Beat a stage, get rewards, use them to permanently buff your team, repeat.

Combat is automatic, same as every backpack management game - put items in the backpack and they trigger on a cooldown - plus you get special abilities from your team members (up to 4). Each team member can also be leveled up/evolved to unlock stronger abilities, and they have buffs that are activated by having specific items in your backpack (wands, armor, etc).

You also get AFK rewards and additional buffs you can unlock and level up to make your team more powerful.

It’s a pretty simple game, but I’m enjoying it more than Backpack Brawl so far. If you like these types of games definitely give it a try.

A few extra disclaimers/thoughts:

- it is a gacha, which I know is going to be enough to get this post downvoted to hell, BUT you get a good amount of pulls + it doesn’t seem like having the S tier characters or ā€œweaponsā€ matters much. I got a couple they’re fine, but my starting characters seem about as strong. Maybe the late game will change things, but for a more casual player I don’t think it would be an issue.

- it has ads, but you can buy a one time (bless) ad removal pack that’ll get rid of the few forced ads (I only saw them after world 1, and only when resting) and give you a few extra goodies you’d get by watching ads. Just don’t be dumb like me and spend $10 on it, turns out you can buy a $5 gem pack from their online store - outside of the app - and use that instead šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

- it has the usual gacha passes and other IAP (if you’ve played Sword X Staff, they’re similar to that), but so far they’re all for extra pull currency. I think there is a PvP arena mode, but the core gameplay loop and most of the game seems to be PvE, so.. I always see these as something you can get if you want to progress faster, but not something you need to buy to play and enjoy the game.

- it’s voice acted! I’m not sure if it’s AI voice acted, but if it is, it doesn’t feel like it. But my god I wish they gave the shop fairy more than a singular ā€œStill alive?ā€ voice line.

- one review mentioned ā€œobviously AI artā€, but as an artist myself who also happens to be very familiar with the kind of art AI can generate, I’m pretty confident this isn’t AI art. Maybe some of the icons, but everything else is too ā€œorganicā€ to be AI imo. Again, if it is AI, it’s not the in-your-face, sloppy kind of AI. I like it, personally.

Review 17 Pro Max + Abxylute S8 Lite + Moonlight

Post image
31 Upvotes

I’ve been using the S8 for a few days on different apps like Moonlight, Sumee, and a few other apple arcade games that support the use of controller and after using other controllers like the Gamesir, Backbone or even the expensive MCON controller. The S8 has given me the most comfortable gaming experience out of any mobile controller i’ve used so far.

Magnetic hall effect sticks means no stick drift ever, the whole controller feels perfectly like handling an xbox controller with your beautiful OLED screen in the middle. The buttons are satisfying to click and theres even vibration on the apps that support it.

It even has two re-mappable buttons on the back that you can change through their also great app on the app store.

Their app is like a game launcher in it-self. Also containing the settings for your controller as well this is a great all in one hub to launch your games.

I appreciate the wide compatibility and am even thinking of investing in an 8.7 inch tablet to get the maximum use out of this controller. You can use this on IOS or android. Meaning even Ipad mini’s work on this device.

I’ve been using this in bed and on the couch and my hand never cramp and get tired like they do with the MCON. This controller is seriously comfortable. Even down to the thoughtful placement of the pass through charging cable that doesn’t block your hands and still gives you perfectly normal use of the controller.

The build quality is also great and the hinge doesn’t fill flimsy or as if I could break it on accident such as like with the Backbone. My phone feels protected inside with the rubber grips holding it in place, there’s no slipping at all.

This controller was only 45 dollars after tax through Amazon and it feels like I should have paid 80 or even 90 dollars for this premium feeling controller.

After this great experience with Abxy I’ve also preordered their M6 controller which can be found on kickstarter, you’ll even get a small discount if you sign up for their early bird. I’m sure this controller will be just as great of quality as the one I’m holding now. Im also excited for the inclusion of vibration support which even the MCON doesn’t have with its 120 dollar price tag.

All in all I love this controller and would purchase it again, like I already said it feels as if I should have paid double what I did.

Combine this controller with Moonlight on my desktop and i’ve made my own 45 dollar Steam Deck.

Identify Powerpuff girl game that I can’t remember

I remember this game that I used to play where you play as one of the girls and try to get as far as you can. It’s like I made up this game in my head, because I can’t seem to find it ANYWHERE! Like wiped from the internet. You hold the phone sideways and you can power them up. Maybe I’m thinking about another game but I am 99% sure that it was a powerpuff girl game and it’s keeping me up PLEASE HELP!!

It looks like a very complex and interesting game where each run has very different outcomes each planet you visit is like its own episode of Star Trek from what I’m reading so far I’m really enjoying it. I suggest people check it out.

Question Experience/recommendations for phone coolers?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have an iPhone 17 pro max and my phone gets pretty hot when playing certain games, this causes the screen to auto dim and some games to limit frame rate, I’m also concerned about the longevity of the phone with it running so hot for long periods of time over the years. I’m considering trying a phone cooler but wanted to see if anyone else here uses anything like this and what their experience with them is and what recommendations they have for quality ones

Troubleshoot Tiny Wings on iPhone 17 pro

Hi, I recently switched to apple and bought the 17 pro. I used an old Apple ID that I made for iPod touch 15 years ago and redownloaded tiny wings.

I love that game but I thought it’s pretty laggy at times. The phone should be able to handle it so I thought it’s a software issue? Or not optimised for 120 hz?
Anyone experiencing the same?
Thanks!

Discussion Adventure to fate dungeons

Post image

I saw this game get recommended a week or two ago. Downloaded on a whim and man I’ve been having so much fun with it. Slight learning curve but so deep and tons of content.

The other title with a similar name also looks intriguing. What are the main differences?

Update: the dev responded to my post but was removed by the mods, why? He thanked me for the purchase and answered my question. U/touchmint great game.

Discussion Mobile Controllers Thoughts

Post image
17 Upvotes

I’ve searched high and low for mobile controllers and think my collection reflects the standard designs.

The small white one is the AceGamer pocket controller.
The larger white and clear model is the MCON.
And the black one in the foreground is the abxylute S8 Lite.

The AceGamer works well for short sessions, such as on a train or plane, but I would restrict it to lighter games because the sticks feel awkward. The MCON is a solid general option, though the phone’s weight and small sticks may cause fatigue.

In my view, the S8 Lite is the most comfortable for extended use and provides a Switch-like feel, particularly with pass-through charging. The main issue is that with two phones and three cases, none fit with a case, so removal is needed. Since I would use it at home or in a hotel, this is minor. Another benefit is that demanding titles like Death Stranding or Control make the phone heat quickly, especially with ray tracing; removing the case probably helps temperatures. I should mention rubber grips near the USB port that might allow case use, though I have not tested that yet, and the S8 Lite is also compatible with tablets, which I don’t own; that is a handy feature.

Are there other mobile controller form factors I’ve missed?
What’s the most important feature other than compatibility for your controllers?

Suggestions Best iOS shmups

As per title, I would like to have some suggestions about great iOS shmups. Fair warning: I'm a potato, so maaaybe don't suggest things like the DoDonPachi series (I haven't played the iOS ports, but if they're anything like the arcade ones, my survival times may be measured in seconds). I'll mention a couple games I'm playing atm if you'd like to know more about my tastes, but feel free to ignore them and suggest something completely different: I'm open to trying new stuff.

Phoenix HD

  • āœ… graphics, as well as the turret mechanics (take down turrets, missile launchers, etc. on enemy ships before taking down the whole ship, to make your life easier)
  • āŒ all power-ups are lost between games
  • āŒ I'm no expert, bu shouldn't danmakus be all about precision? The player ship here has a very large hit box, and sometimes I'm not sure it's actually possible to avoid all bullets, regardless of how precise you are

Phoenix 2

  • ā˜‘ļø I wouldn't say graphics are bad, but they surely don't look as good as its predecessor. They're incredibly smooth, though
  • āœ… now, this is what I mean about precision! The actual ship hit box is minuscule (wings don't count, as in many games of this genre) and the ship inertia is limited, so even when the screen is literally covered in bullets (as it should be), you still have a fighting chance.

EDIT: wow, I didn't think a Sunday post on such a topic would attract so many answers! Thank you so much! šŸ™
