Horror News Christopher Nolan: "I’ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea. When you go see a film like Obsession, that’s an amazing idea. That movie works like a motherfucker."

I’ve always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view. In other words, you have to have an amazing idea. When you go see a film like Obsession, that’s an amazing idea. That movie works like a motherfucker. It’s not about the technical side. It’s not about what technical itches I would have to scratch. It’s about story. So I’m always looking.

“…this should never have made it past the pitch.”

Horror News ‘28 Years Later: Part 3' is now in limbo

This all begs the question: why was Sony so quick to greenlight the third and final chapter? Was it simply a desperate attempt to bolster “The Bone Temple”? That’s what it sounds like.

The last week, I’ve heard from two separate sources that Sony is in no rush to make the trilogy capper happen, despite announcing it last December. In fact, I’ve heard Netflix has shown some interest in acquiring the sequel, but Danny Boyle isn’t having any of it. He wants a theatrical release for this final chapter, which is supposed to star Cillian Murphy.

Horror News People need to stop hating on Resident Evil before it's even out, and Cregger might be too pure for the gaming community.

I gotta say, I feel sorry for Cregger. He's clearly a fan of the franchise and was making the accurate observation that you can't just do a shot by shot remake of a video game into a film, so you shouldn't try, and instead do a translation of how the thing feels. Since he's a fan himself and a skilled horror director, he's clearly suited to give it a shot, and making a lore-adjacent adaptation instead of a direct re-telling of the same story is very reasonable to me; more direct adaptations can work with games that are already cinematic, like The Last of Us (how well that show works is up for debate, but it's certainly more faithful than most other video game adaptations), but Resident Evil isn't a narrative game, so you're gonna need to make bigger changes anyway.

I get it, the Resident Evil franchise has a history of disappointing adaptations, but honestly, what these games are is glorious camp, and that is something the existing movies actually are, and people hate them (I don't - they're glorious camp!). The games' story also isn't being adapted there, but if it's just about the narrative, we already have the games, we don't need someone to just say the same words. I'd argue that the important thing about an adaption of an art piece into a different medium is to capture how something feels, and the glorious, larger scale camp part of the games is what the existing movie franchise attempted to adapt (and, in my opinion, the first and fifth ones captured it perfectly). The smaller scale character-motivated drama and horror part of the games is what we didn't get, and it looks like Cregger saw this and felt that that's his entryway into the franchise. I agree with that approach and am very curious to see what he's done; his previous films certainly show that he got the skill for character-driven horror-drama.

I'm honestly kinda sad for him, and how much he seems like he seems overwhelmed with the backlash. At the same time, Cregger, if you're reading this, this is unfortunately just what the video game community is like. I don't think you're required to convince the fandom to give your film a shot, you're just dealing with the noise of the community, this is what it always sounds like, no matter what happens. It's just directed at you right now because you made the film, but it's not a judgement of the film or your person. Every video game industry figure has to learn to just tune out this noise, because it's so incredibly loud and toxic because so many people in the community are basically children with no social skills. It's one of the reasons I never felt comfortable considering myself a part of the gaming community, even though I've been a lifelong enthusiastic gamer; that toxic culture is something I feel so uncomfortable with that I don't want even the association. So much can get destroyed with this intense antagonism, especially people's confidence and good faith, both of which I think Cregger has, but might just be too pure for this sub culture. Please just ignore it and move on. Look at the kind of hate the makers of The Last of Us Part II got, and realize that that's gonna happen no matter the quality of your product. It's got nothing to do with you, and all to do with them. 💜

The American Cinematheque’s annual Bleak Week included all of Ari Aster’s films: Midsommar: Director’s Cut, Beau Is Afraid, Eddington, and his debut feature, Hereditary. During the Q&A for Hereditary on Sunday, Aster revealed he has a script to further explore that world, but has no immediate plans to make it.

“I wrote a prequel to this,” Aster said. “It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel so I don’t know where this goes.”

Horror News Saber Interactive, the studio responsible for the upcoming Hellraiser videogame, has been target of controversy after firing the head writer for one of their games and replacing them with ChatGPT.

After the initial allegations by the former employee(Stella Sacco), Saber Interactive CEO, Matt Karch, made the following statements:

“Stella who? I had to ask Claude because I have never spoken to her or seen her. We have already said we are using AI for certain parts of the game and will update the Steam page once we have finalized the feature set.

“Let me clarify that the entire story script, were it to win an award, would go to someone who can walk up on stage and receive it. It was always our intention to reveal this until Stella violated her confidentiality clause and revealed this before we were ready.

“We look at our use of AI in this particular game, which will be a lower priced title, as a plus for consumers,”

“As far as Stella is concerned, she was replaced by someone more talented and terminated for a variety of reasons a few months later. From what I can gather she enjoys controversy even more than I do. I would frankly in retrospect have been happy to replace her with AI. At least we would be dealing with someone programmed to be honest.”
