Considering the garbage I usually expect from Jacobs this is a strong statement that goes beyond most others I’ve seen.

I honestly thought they weren’t even going to say anything, and if they did definitely not like this. I’m pleasantly surprised

Did the Jets make a statement? Did I miss it?

I hope we aren't one of the last teams. I know Wheeler made a statement

EDIT: I did miss it today, it seems. Well, it's something

Unpopular opinion time: I don't need sports team owners or athletes making statements about this stuff. It would be nice if, as wealthy people, they contributed to fighting the underlying causes.

If someone wants to make a statement, by all means, go ahead. I'm not saying "stick to sports." Not at all.

But it shouldn't be an expectation that professional sports teams issue statements on any issue facing the world. Do I have some right to know Southampton's position on violence in Hong Kong? Do I have some right to know the Montreal Canadiens' position on the Transcanada Pipeline protests? No. If they want to make a statement, fine; let's stop expecting every team to do so.

I say this as a fan of teams owned in part by a woman of color, who is often fighting the perception of being a gold digger.

abhorrent murder of George Floyd

This is the strong language more people should be using. Call it what it is. It’s murder.

60

u/Dragonsandman Jun 02 '20

I've seen all sorts of people describe it accurately that way, but not many brands. Props to the Bruins for actually saying it was a murder.

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

Boston might have been one of the last horses to cross the finish line, but this is one of the best statements I’ve seen yet. They don’t shy away from calling it what it is.

u/22edudrccs Jun 02 '20

Rather them take a while and get it right than spew out the same corporate jargon we’ve been getting

91

u/Imagine1 Jun 02 '20

I was pretty genuinely shocked to see a Jacobs-run team have such a strongly worded statement. And they included the word "murder" which immediately places it in the upper echelon of statements made by NHL teams the past few days. Are the Leafs the only other team to do so? I can't remember

This is a good statement. I hope we see them continue to support the ideals they list here through their actions.

u/trolloc1 Jun 02 '20

Me coming in here: Cant wait to see how the Bruins fucked this up.

Well, damn. Went all out. 10/10

28

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

Except they didn't treat their workers with dignity regarding covid unemployment. I'd like to see greater alignment between their words and their actions.

17

u/Imagine1 Jun 02 '20

You’re absolutely right, which is why this statement was so shocking to me. The Bruins (and to a greater extent, Jacobs) have never been a paragon of societal support. Maybe they’ll change, maybe they won’t, but if they *are * going to change then this is a good start.

And if they don’t change? Then they’re hypocritical bastards, and Bruins and NHL fans should throw this statement back in their face every chance they get.

u/AppropriateCorner21 Jun 02 '20

Yup, this statement is something their PR team came up with, it doesn't reflect how Jacob's does business.

u/PSChris33 Jun 02 '20 edited Jun 02 '20

Damn. Props, they called it what it is. Murder. Only one other team went that far. This is definitely a lot more poignant than your typical bland cookie cutter crap. Even beyond corporate PR, this is awesome.

Well done, Jacobs?

20

u/notleonardodicaprio Jun 02 '20

And I think the only team to say "Black lives matter". Honestly surprised it's coming from Jacobs and the Bruins but happy that it was said

Kudos to Boston for adressing the issues directly. That’s probably the strongest statement so far.

37

u/FlyersLaForest Jun 02 '20

Probably the best post from an NHL team yet.

35

u/Maxpowr9 Jun 02 '20

I'm honestly shocked the Bruins Organization wrote this.

33

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

I feel like they asked Jack Edwards to write this. (I mean that in a positive way).

19

u/Danengel32 Jun 02 '20

I’m not a huge Jack Edwards fan when he announces games, but no body can deny that he is an absolute wordsmith with how he describes certain things.

12

u/PSChris33 Jun 02 '20

IIRC he is an english major

7

u/waffleking_ Jun 02 '20

Not to derail the conversation but his video on Gregory Campbell is a fine example of that.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

This is why I’ve always felt like people would like him a lot more if he was a national announcer instead of a local one. The guy is really fucking fun to listen to, but he’s a huge homer. Remove the bias in favor of the Bruins and you’ve got someone everyone could appreciate.

18

u/emerzionnn Jun 02 '20

One of the more powerful statements from a sports team I've seen, actually of any establishment.

9

u/JiveTurkey688 Jun 02 '20

Does this leave us as the only team to not make a statement?

20

u/PSChris33 Jun 02 '20

9

u/JiveTurkey688 Jun 02 '20

Yeah I just saw that. Im not sure the words even exist to describe just how incompetent Dolan is.

3

u/clutchgetspaid Jun 02 '20

And good for them. Dolan's a jerk.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

Rangers? I don't believe the Wings have either.

7

u/JiveTurkey688 Jun 02 '20

Yup, looks like the Senators, Wings and Rangers are the only 3 teams now. Somehow Dolan has turned making a simple statement into a whole drama. Apparently MSG employees are having a closed-door meeting about the email he sent out justifying not making a statement on behalf of the Knicks and Rangers

7

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

I mean I don't think it's required an organization say something, but I think if you have a large platform/are a prominent public figure that you have a responsibility to speak out about what's right from time to time. It would be nice to see the organization to which I've given so much of my time and passion show some humanity and speak out about something so important.

5

u/JiveTurkey688 Jun 02 '20

Yup I agree. With Dolan the issue of not speaking up is two-fold. 1. He owns the Knicks, a team full of POC who are deeply affected by what is going on, and 2. Like a month ago some racist troll spammed the n-word in a zoom chat K'Andre Miller was doing and the Rangers were heavily criticized for how long it took them to even put out a statement. Considering that incident, they should have put together a meaningful statement by now.

A lot of the statements teams are making are fairly tone-deaf and don't really add any value. But as you say, it would be nice to see the team I support speak out

1

u/BCEagle13 Jun 02 '20 edited Jun 02 '20

I normally agree with you and didn’t really like the comments about if a player doesn’t speak out it means x, y, or z. That being said with this, I think at this point it’s a requirement. There’s 32 teams, 29 of which have issued a statement, and the larger league itself and PA has also issued statements as well. I think when it gets to that point silence means something and probably should rightfully be held against them. Especially for the Rangers, where they very recently had an issue with racism come up.

Edit someone has pointed out that Ottawa has been commenting on it for a couple days even though they haven’t put out an official statement. Also Detroit just released one so that just leave the Rangers.

1

u/apunkgaming Jun 02 '20

Until you remember Dolan also owns an NBA team, and is 1 of 2 NBA owners to remain silent. These issues impact his players and their loved ones on a daily basis and he can't say a word. Absolute fucking coward. Sickens me to be a Rangers fan currently.

3

u/sleepingchair Jun 02 '20 edited Jun 02 '20

Senators did a #blackouttuesday post... and also changed to their Pride logo. But anyways, they posted something. Just leaves the Wings and Rangers now.

1

u/Vilheim Jun 02 '20

Sens are the "it's something" meme in a nutshell as of late.

1

u/trolloc1 Jun 02 '20

Senators

In their defence Melnyk probably forgot the twitter password

2

u/LeafsChick Jun 02 '20

He’s laid off the whole PR team!

2

u/Shadowbladez337 Jun 02 '20

It blows my mind that NYR are the team that hasn't made any statement whatsoever yet, especially given the city and its history with the black community.

1

u/JiveTurkey688 Jun 02 '20

yeah it's really disappointing

7

u/LeafsChick Jun 02 '20

Bruins came in strong! Much respect 🖤

3

u/Vilheim Jun 02 '20

I may hate the Bruins with a firey passion when the game is on, but I really respect this message and how it was said. I got scared reading the first part (senseless violence in any and all forms) and thought they were going to go after the protests and riots.

Well said and well directed.

5

u/trushpunda Jun 02 '20

Bruins coming in strong. Respect

2

u/shawnglade Jun 02 '20

I half expected the Bruins to say "Floyd deserved it, fuck black lives" or something but I'm really glad they called it what it is, murder. One of the best statements yet

1

u/HoneyBadgermole Jun 02 '20

I'm surprised - thrilled, but still surprised - by the strength of language they used. Considering Jacobs lack of support for workers throughout COVID I worry that this is virtue signaling rather than anything more meaningful. Although, considering the apparent racism in Boston's assorted fan bases over the last few years, any and every condemnation from the top is important.

1

u/crazydogggz Jun 02 '20

apparent racism in Boston's assorted fan bases over the last few years

Boston used to have way more issues with racism than they have in the past few years

0

u/European_Red_Fox Jun 02 '20

I compare this to what the Milwaukee Admirals and Islanders said and that’s how you can tell what a strong statement is imo.

u/xVoluntasx Jun 03 '20

stark contrast to how this city treated Joel Ward several years ago

as powerful of a statement they made today, this city still has a LONG, long way to go
