Hi everyone! I saw someone share a hanafuda set with the same Marukin mark here before, so today I'd like to share this set gifted to me by a friend.

The designs differ significantly, though. Mine looks very similar to Nintendo's later-era designs, and I suspect it was not manufactured by the same company.

I want to share a solitaire I've been playing recently, I adapted it from a western solitaire my uncle taught me when I was a kid. I think it works better with Hanafuda, because there is more variety in the combinations and it takes less space on the table because the cards are smaller.

I called it Ototoi - the day before yesterday.

It's very simple and requires basically no strategy or brain activity. It requires only some attention and luck, so I play it all the time while watching something or listening to a podcast. It's also nice for beginners to familiarize themselves with the cards. And besides I just find handling the hanafuda cards pleasant.

You lay out your cards one by one in a line from left to right (or from right to left if you feel like it), and once you have at least 3 cards, you can start looking for the matches.

You have your today (Kyou) card, you just took from the deck and put on the table at the end of the sequence. The previous card is yesterday (Kinou), and the card before that is the day before yesterday (Ototoi). English has no name for that day, so I'll just call it the Ototoi.

You always only compare the today card with the Ototoi, skipping yesterday, so one over, never neighboring cards. If they have any matching features, you take the yesterday card and put it on top of the Ototoi. Now the former yesterday card is your today card, It has it's own yesterday, which used to be the card before the Ototoi, and its own new Ototoi, which used to be the Ototoi card for the former Ototoi (unless there were only 3 cards on the table to begin with). Bear with me. The former today card becomes your Ashita (tomorrow) card, and you leave it alone for now.

After you found a match and put your yesterday card on the Ototoi you have an opportunity to make a combo by comparing it with it's own new Ototoi. If it matches, you do the same - put the current yesterday card on top of the current Ototoi card and check if you can continue the combo. Your former today stack now also becomes tomorrow, now you have two of them. If there are no combos, you just move your tomorrow card or stack to the end of the sequence and compare it with the Ototoi again. If you're out of the tommorow cards, you just get the next card from the deck.

You always move the entire stack, regardless of it's a yesterday or a tomorrow.

Your goal is to have two stacks of cards on the table (no Ototoi) when you have no cards left in your deck.

Now, the combinations.

1. The cards match by month. So any 2 cards of the same month is a match.

2. By type. Any two ribbons is a match (regardless of color or poetry), any two brights is a match, any two animals is a match, and most importantly, any two plains is a match, regardless of their month (unlike in Koi-Koi).

3. The sake cup, a Joker, matches with all the cards it makes combinations in Koi Koi, namely, any flower (plain), any animal, the Full Moon or the Sakura curtain.

I hope this makes at least some sense. And hopefully, this little video will serve as a good illustration.

A rule variation to add a bit of agency and strategy: if you have several "tomorrow" cards or stacks after a combo you can use them in any order. I haven't tested this, though and I have no idea how much it affects the chances of success.

I have been working on these cards for about 5 years and they are pretty much done. It’s based on plants and animals of the Upper Midwest and on things more related to the Midwest. I tried to pay homage to the traditional Hanafuda deck as much as possible though I did take some (maybe many) artistic liberties. I’m looking to have them printed as bridge-sized playing cards. The tower is part of an expansion that I’m planning.

Anyone knows if exist a type of binder to collect hanafuda cards ?

Hi everyone! Today I'd like to share hand-printed hanafuda from Matsui Tengudo. I'm also very fond of collecting their machine-printed hanafuda, and I have a question: given that hand-printing is an older technique than machine printing, did these two printing methods ever coexist? I'm curious because I often come across hanafuda from the same time period that were made with different printing processes.

This isn’t the first Matsui Tengudō White Peony dairenbana that’s been posted on this sub (see [u/j](u/jindenberg)[h](u/jindenberg)[indenberg](u/jindenberg)’s post here), but figured it was worth posting anyway. I particularly love some of the blues in this hand-printed set, as well as the patterns on many of the tanzaku cards that are characteristic of dairenbana sets. I have a Silver Peony dairenbana one I should post some time soon as well, though this is my favorite of the two sets, and it’s better preserved.

I created a freely available (+no ads) "atmospheric" take on the traditional hanafuda Koi Koi game focusing on Hokusai graphics and Edo-era period personalities. This is a one-player game currently versus bot opponents. Does 1-player mode scratch the itch or should I really be thinking about multi-player? It features spoken Japanese audio and English subtitles. Any feedback on improving it would be welcome!

This version is 23 MB and should play fine on mobile after the initial load.

I recently came across this vintage Japanese Hanafuda/Mushibana card set, which I believe was made by Matsui Tengudō.

The set contains 40 illustrated cards and one blank card, and comes with its original box featuring dragon and tiger artwork. There also appears to be an old Japanese tax seal on the packaging.

I'm hoping some of the knowledgeable collectors here might be able to help me with a few questions:

- Can anyone confirm the manufacturer and identify the specific edition or type of cards?

- Is it possible to estimate when this set was produced, based on the packaging, artwork or tax seal?

- Is this a relatively common set, or something more collectible?

- What would be a realistic market value for a set like this in its current condition?

I'm considering selling it eventually, possibly on eBay, but I'd like to understand what I have before deciding on a price.

The fact that it says Tengdo instead of Tengudo is what really makes me think this it's fake.

Hi - we enjoy and play a lot of Koi-Koi in our family since discovering the game in 2023.
We've always toyed with the idea of creating a set inspired by South African flora and fauna.

A few things have converged which has led me to renew the idea which has lead to the designs I've shared. This is the first draft of a printed set that we're making, all based on wildlife that is found close to where I live.

The imagery is based on real photos (using suitable Creative Commons licenses or my own photos) using AI image models to isolate and combine the different elements, and for adding the ribbons. Credits will be printed on a separate card.

I hope I'm not offending too much in some of the changes I've made. In each case it was to make the game more accessible to new players and based on things that friends have struggled with when learning. Things like:
- coloured bands connecting the different months (easier to match)
- gold frames around the special cards (blue ribbons, painted ribbons and boar/deer/butterfly)
- adding birds to each of the ribbon cards (to showcase more of the local wildlife)
- adding a visual motif (coloured bands) to connect the sake cup (binoculars) with the moon/flower bright equivalent.
- designing at playing card size, to work with local printers

The birds and species selection I used was somewhat constrained by what's in my neigbourhood. I do have another set planned that would be more faithful to the original, drawing from a wider pool of South African wildlife, but still thought this would be fun to share.

This particular set is for my own personal use, to print and gift to friends, so I'm not selling anything here.

I'm not familiar with any games except Koi-Koi where Ino-Shika-Cho is a yaku, and that's not for three players. This is a game with the three brights yaku as well (unless "sanko-riichi" is something else?), and seemingly a yaku is an instant victory?

These guys were asleep from 1926 to 2026, if this gives any historical information

Edir: Hachi-Hachi has ino-shika-cho and is 3 player, but doesn't have 3 brights...

Hi everyone! I know this isn’t a hanafuda deck, so I hope this is okay to share here.

I’m Juan, a Mexican illustrator from Mexico City, and I’ve spent the last two years working on a project called El Quinto Sol: The Mesoamerican Cosmos.

One of the things I find fascinating about hanafuda is how much cultural information can live inside a deck of cards, seasons, plants, animals, traditional imagery, relationships between symbols — while the object still remains something people can actually play with.

My project comes from a very different tradition, but I’ve been exploring a similar question:

Can a deck of cards carry a traditional symbolic system without becoming just decoration?

El Quinto Sol is a 56-card French-suited deck based on Mesoamerican cosmology, especially Nahua/Mexica traditions.

The four suits correspond to sacred directions and forces, the court cards represent deities connected to those directions, and the numbered cards incorporate elements of the Tonalpohualli, the 260-day sacred calendar.

I’ve tried to preserve relationships between numbers, symbols, directions and mythological figures rather than simply putting ancient imagery onto poker cards.

It’s definitely a contemporary interpretation, not an attempt to recreate an ancient Mesoamerican card game, but the goal is to use a familiar modern object as a doorway into a much older worldview.

Every illustration and design was created by hand.

When a traditional card system gets reinterpreted visually, what do you think is most important to preserve — the imagery, the structure, the symbolism, or the way the cards function?

Hello everyone! Today we have a set of Tengudo Hanafuda dating from the Taisho era to the Showa era. The box packaging is a variant I’ve never come across before. Since this set was not purchased in Japan, it was likely lost when Japanese people brought it overseas. If anyone happens to know when the original Japanese owner brought this set to this country, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm doing a research project into hanafuda cards and I have to recreate them. I've narrowed my era down to 1880s-1920s and I'm now looking for any hanafuda packaging in that era. I've had a look online but I've only found a few bits and not much! If anyone has any photos or links to information about it I'd really appreciate it

I'm thinking of doing hanafuda cards but im a bit stuck with my research. does anyone know where i can find information about the decks of cards with dates as well as things like exact sizing, printing methods, type of card they're printed onto and the thickness, what type of finish they have (eg. glossy) and anything i need to bare in mind when designing my own deck! thanks!!!
