August 2025 Freetalk Fridays

Hi Everyone, welcome to the long series of weekly Greytalk posts. You can literally ask about anything related to greyhounds, no matter how basic or complex. Here are the rules:

  1. Nothing illegal or extremely objectionable.
  2. No abuse. You can ask for more information, you can explain why you don't like something, but you can't abuse the poster.
  3. Don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet without consulting your vet!
  4. The rest of the Greyddit Rules still apply.

If you think of more ideas, PM the mods .

Advice Mostly toothless hound?

Hi lovely folk

Me and my partner are in the process of getting a second hound! She had a dental done with the shelter and currently only has her 4 canine teeth left. We haven't gotten her yet but I was wondering if there was anything I should keep in mind for her mouth situation going forward when she does move in

Thanks in advance!

Two weeks in now with Chilli Rose, our little beauty. Here she is taking up a small corner of the spare couch...

Thank you so much to the kind advice from everyone on stairs (she's got them now!), toilet training, etc.

We're still on trial, but all is going well so far 🤞

Matching onsies for babies

Has anyone found a supplier where I can get a onsie for a greyhound and a newborn? Our girl now has a human sister and I’d love to have a bit of fun with their PJs 😝

Advice GOLP - Surgery or no?

Hello Everyone,

Here to ask for experiences with GOLP and surgery for GOLP.

GOLP = Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis .

Our 11 year old boy Snoopy has been diagnosed with this condition and our vet is keen to go ahead with the surgery, especially before it becomes too hot for summer.

We’re feeling overwhelmed and of course need some real life experiences to help us make decisions please.

Snoopy is in good spirits, has great quality of life and his condition is currently managed with medication.

Is there anyone here who has been through this?

Any experiences and/or things that you’ve done to get through the process?

Is your grey better after the op?

Recovery, what was it like and how did you cope?

Thank you SO much everyone

Long roadtrip advice!

Post image
97 Upvotes

Hi all! I'm planning to take a big roadtrip in December with Bob. The car ride is going to be for 12hrs driving time.

How often should we stop? Give a full meal before we leave? I'm really unsure about most aspects.

Bob is going to be in the back seat of a Camry. I've only got blankets but I'm willing to purchase things to make Bob more comfortable.

I'm just seeking advice from people that have done similar long driving trips.

Thank you 😊

Advice Yet another corn question...

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hello!

My family recently adopted a five-year-old ex-racing greyhound. We've had lurchers before, but this is our first full greyhound. Our other hounds haven't had corns, so I have no first-hand experience with them.

At the weekend, my boy developed a sudden limp, and was very hesitant to put his front left paw on the ground. We took him to the emergency vets and he had a thorough examination where the vet found no lumps or bumps or obvious pain. My boy only whimpered slightly when the vet pressed on these middle two toes, but otherwise wasn't bothered by anything else. The vet suspected a muscle sprain or some arthritis setting in from his racing days, so sent us home with Onsior and no walks for a week.

But I was applying his paw balm this morning and found these on the very same toes. Do these look like corns?

I've also noticed that he walks much more readily on grass and his soft beds vs hard kitchen floor or patio, which I know can suggest corns.

The vet said that if his limp doesn't improve within a few days we should go back to the vet for another look, and then it would be X-rays. Obviously I know there's an increased risk of osteosarcoma in greyhounds, which is keeping me up at night, so if it's 'just' corns I might be able to breathe again!

For my boy Davey

Davey — my first greyhound unexpectedly and suddenly passed. He didn’t have an easy life. Once he retired from racing at around 3 he came off the track with scars. Sensitive paws. Anxiety. Timidness. But he came with a big heart. And he grew. His personality grew. He was happy and he loved his fancy bed, his diet food, his shoes, and his sister Birdie.

Davey and I grew extremely close. I became his care taker — the person he trusted the most.

When I first adopted him he wouldn’t let me touch him. On his last day he let me lay on top of him and give him the biggest hug.

He wasn’t built to be a racer. All he wanted to do was lay around and be close. And now he will forever been laying on my arm.

If every time I come home he does a big shake off but then settles should I assume he's excited and not stressed?

Had him for a little bit now and have tried to make my comings and goings as matter of fact as possible. Haven't greeted him right when I get home and wait for a few minutes before giving him a hello.

He always does a big shake off but then settles. Should I take it as excitement vs shaking off adrenaline nerves/scaredies?

Why Is She Doing This?

This is Princess Penelope. She does this creep stalk thing every so often. Normally it’s when I’m cleaning up her poop in the yard or when I’m under the influence of weed/mushrooms. I’ve let her complete her course and it always ends with her running into me. If I run at her she’ll snap out of it and join me in frolicking around the yard. What is she doing and why? If she was your dog would you stop her from doing this and how would you go about doing it?

Advice Should I let her in bed?

I recently adopted a senior female galgo. I live in a small studio apartment so my bed is sort of an obvious target. But I have been telling her no and putting her paws back on the ground when she wants to join me there on day time. And she does stay in her own bed next to my bed pretty well.
But in early mornings she jumps in my bed to sleep on me. Why do you think she is doing it? And should I let her?

Advice Winter boot recommendations for my whippets?

I have 2 whippets that weigh almost 40lbs and need some recommendations on winter boots!

I live in Canada, so everything I see that seems to work for other whippet owners are from Europe or Australia and would costs a fortune after shipping for two pairs. My whippets are a bit larger than other whippets I have run into (not over weight, just larger in overall build and height)

Currently my dogs are wearing the Canada Pooch boots in a size 2. Probably a common problem with others here, they are in between sizes due to their size and shape. The size 2 fits the width of their feet but they are a bit short when it comes to the length, and the Velcro that is supposed to strap above their ankle sits right on their ankle instead where the foot bends. So I feel like they must be uncomfortable for them because their toes and nails are a bit too snug in my opinion. A size 3 fits them perfectly for the length and where the Velcro sits, but the width is too wide causing the boots to fall off. I REALLY wanted the suspender boots from Canada pooch, I like that they go higher up on the leg protecting them from snow and preventing snow from falling into the boot, which happens a lot on the short ones. I thought a size 3 would be perfect if the boots had that extra help keeping them up with the suspenders. After trying them on in the store, they still slipped off my dogs feet. The size 2 in the suspender boots don’t work because the suspenders don’t go long enough to comfortably fit over them.

Does anyone have any recommendations for boots that won’t break the bank? I would love a pair that goes a bit higher on their legs so I’m not back tracking trying to find a boot that fell off or snow doesn’t fall in the boot because my dogs are babies and will stand still until I fix it cause a 20 minutes walk to turn into a 45 minute walk.. but I am also open to short ones if someone has a good experience with them!

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for anyone who recommends something :)

How do you all get your hound to accept the hour change in the autumn? Logan is adamant his meals are late and barks persistently till we give in. Funnily he was ok with the spring change (when meals were an hour earlier 🤣)
