A Beginner's Guide to Authentic Cartridges

Hello everyone, as you all know GBA cartridges can be extremely difficult to find in person nowadays and even more so for some authentic ones. That being said, if you're unsure in any way how to determine a fake from real cartridge, this is the post for you!

For more help, feel free to visit r/gameverifying for all your identification needs!

Keep in mind that to ensure the best chances of an authentic cartridge, you should be wary of:

  • Unusually low prices (if it's too good to be true, chances are it's too good to be real!)
  • Products made or sent from China (enough said)
  • Sellers using stock images (NEVER purchase a product that isn't an image of the cartridge itself)

That being said, where do we start looking?

It can be a bit difficult, but there are actually some very good tells when it comes to finding real games like the color, font, positioning, and quality of the cartridge. For example, let's pretend you're looking for an authentic US copy of Pokemon Firered.

Some things you can look out for should be:

  1. Color: All Pokemon GBA games come in their respective colors (including Leafgreen and Emerald by a slight margin) with Firered being red and not orange. While most cartridges come in a singular shade of gray, two particular exceptions are the GBA video cartridges which come in light gray casings and (Classic) NES series which match the console's respective color. Interestingly enough, due to the GBA's expansive library there consist of unique games that do not fit the standard color and size of a GBA cartridge, which include games such as Yoshi's Topsy Turvy, Drill Dozer, and many other variations listed here. (1)
  2. Label: By observing a label's ESRB rating, official seal, game code, and more, you can determine its authenticity. Unlike other GBA games, Pokemon games will always have a shiny/holographic label, an indented circle in its center, and an embossed number on the right side, which is pretty much its production number. However while it is a good way to determine authenticity, there are cases where these numbers will have naturally worn away or quality repros that have embossed their own cartridges. All in all, always make sure to compare your cartridge to an authentic one online to confirm fonts, font sizes, positioning, etc.
  3. Cartridge: In the case of buying a physical cartridge yourself, this may be one on the most helpful things to know. The easiest things to look out for are the Gameboy logo on top of the label, and arrow below the label. If the logo is written in the wrong font, appears to have been cut deeper than normal, or if the arrow is too small, it's a repro. The back will always state: MODEL NO. AGB-002 / PAT. PEND. MADE IN JAPAN like its GBC predecessor. However, this is easy to reproduce so the final thing to check yourself is both the screw and board under the cartridge. GBA cartridges will only ever use a triwing screw, the same one used on all GBA consoles. More importantly (if you can), be sure to grab a flashlight and check the slot. Above the pins, there should be an official Nintendo logo and presumably its cartridge number.

In the case of Pokemon games always check for:

  • A holographic label and an embossed number if possible
  • Proper fonts and positions (FRLG and RSE labels are mildly different)
  • A battery behind the label on the right side (only applies to RSE)
  • Four squares on the back of the cartridge ( always on the left)
  • Pins on the board ( One of the easiest things to spot on faked cartridges, all GBA games will always have pins )

If there are any other questions, please feel free to leave them below and discuss!

Help with button issue?

The right trigger on my (funny playing gba max screen modded) gba stops working but the issue goes away if I loosen the two screws near the right trigger. I've taken the back off, checked the switch is working on its own and reassembled but the issue still remains. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

GBA Maker is HERE!!!

Hey everyone!

So yeah. After GB Maker and GBC Maker, it's finally time for something a little more powerful.

GBA MAKER IS OFFICIALLY RELEASED!!!

I've been working on a complete development environment for making real Game Boy Advance games, and today I'm finally releasing it!

Just like my previous Makers, GBA Maker lets you write code, draw sprites, build maps, make music, and test your games without leaving the editor.

But this time, there's quite a bit more to play with!

Here's some of the cool stuff:

  • Real .gba ROMs! Play your games in an emulator, on a flash cartridge, or on actual Game Boy Advance hardware.
  • WAV audio support! Use your own music and sound effects.
  • Built-in sprite, map, font and music editors! Everything in one place.
  • Up to 4-player link cable multiplayer! You can even test linked players inside the editor.
  • Perspective graphics! Make retro racing games with rotating and scaling backgrounds.
  • Windows, Linux and HTML5 exports! Share your games with people who don't own a GBA.
  • No royalties or required branding! Your games belong to you, and you can sell them however you want.

I've already been making and testing games with GBA Maker, including Celeste Classic and VORTEX GBA, and I'm really excited to see what other people create with it!

GBA Maker normally costs $7, but to celebrate the release, it's available for just $5!

This is the first public release, so if you run into any bugs or have suggestions, please let me know! I'll keep improving things based on your feedback.

Thanks to everyone who has been following my projects and supporting GB Maker and GBC Maker. It really means a lot to me. :)

NOW GO MAKE SOMETHING CRAZY FOR THE GBA!!! ;D

I honestly didn't expect this kind of response to GBA Maker!

In just the first 24 hours, so many people checked out my little project, bought it, shared it, and left encouraging comments.

And something happened yesterday that genuinely surprised me.

Someone bought GBA Maker and left a $10 TIP!!!

That's $15 for a tool currently on sale for just $5!

And they weren't the only one. Several other people paid extra too, including a few $7 purchases.

You didn't have to do that, but you did. And I really, really appreciate it.

I started making these tools because I wanted an easier way to create games for my own Game Boys. I never expected people from around the world to actually want to use them too!

Seeing people get excited about GB Maker, GBC Maker, and now GBA Maker has been amazing.

THANK YOU to everyone who bought one of my Makers, left a tip, shared a link, reported a bug, or simply said something nice!

Your support means I can keep improving these tools and making them better.

And don't worry, I'm not done yet! I've already got fixes and improvements planned for the next GBA Maker update. ;D

I can't wait to see what you all create!

THANK YOU AGAIN!!! :D

Does RTC not work with EZFlash?

I'm trying to play Pokémon Heart & Soul on my ezflash omega (not definitive). Replaced the battery and the clock works perfectly in the menu. But when I open the rom it says my battery has run dry.

Yes I've tried taking out the cartridge. Doesn't do anything.

Bootleg ‘Aladdin 2’ GBA cartridge

Been looking up gba Aladdin bootlegs to figure out what this is, but can’t find anything exactly the same online. Was wondering if anyone knows more about this.

My dad found this at a boot sale years ago but I tried playing it once when I was a kid and then never again because it was dogshit. Somehow never realised it was a bootleg until attempting to replay it now. Cartridge is very obviously fake because of how many different fonts are on the front, and also because it has AGB 033 on the back and a pokemon company / TPC sticker for no reason. When the game starts it shows a title screen with just Aladdin written, then a still shot of what looks like the original gba/snes game, then another title screen, then exposition via jafar. No actual start menu. The game itself is very crappily made, and after looking it up the gameplay and level seems like a one-to-one of another Aladdin bootleg called Aladdin 2000 for snes - just worse looking. The health and stuff isn’t cropped properly at the bottom of the screen, and if you press L+R you get a config menu with a Chinese email on it.

Is this Real?

I bought a broken Gameboy Advance SP from a guy on eBay and when I was at his basement he had this working Gameboy for himself. It was a gift from his ex back in the days. The Pokémon sticker on the back is obviously aftermarket but the other one is printed on the shell. I couldn’t find anything on Consolevariations or a aftermarket shell. I need professional help. Is that a special edition?

Replacement battery recommendation?

Which battery would you recommend for my modded GBA SP?

I have the IPS screen and Everdrive mini going so that may increasing energy consumption significantly.

I had bought a replacement off amazon but the LED indicator turns red not too long after having charged it for a while.

Update:
Thanks all! Went ahead and ordered me a FunnyPlaying

Hi, I found this GBA at a flea market, and at a friend's request opened it up because it seemed to be modded, and while I know next to nothing about that, it turns out the shell and maybe the screen are aftermarket. Could someone tell me what is going on with these wires?

Hey everyone!

A little update on GBA Maker, my upcoming Game Boy Advance development tool!

I've been testing it by porting Celeste Classic, the original PICO-8 game, to GBA. It's still a work in progress, but I wanted to show you how it's coming along! ;D

I've also just put it onto a real GBA cartridge using GB Flash!

All credit for the original Celeste Classic goes to Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry. This is an unofficial fan port.

What do you guys think? I'd love to hear your feedback!

You can also check out my other projects on itch.io!

Thanks everyone! :D

What’s wrong with my GBA?

Hi all,

I bought a modified GBA with IPS panel and USB-Charging on eBay from a commercial reseller. Yesterday my GBA just randomly started restarting. Is this just low battery or something wrong with the GBA in general?
